RESUMO

The current study aims to assess the prevalence of different genera of Rickettsiales, intracellular bacteria, in dogs across various regions of Iran. Rickettsiales, as zoonotic pathogens, can have various manifestations in different species, including immunosuppression, anaemia and neuropathy. Due to their close interactions with people and livestock, dogs can serve as reservoirs and transmit these pathogens to humans and other animals. The data from this research can be valuable for managing and controlling related diseases and complications in Iran and possibly neighbouring countries. Pertinent data for this study was gathered without time limitations until 1 March 2022, from different databases. Of all the inspected studies, 26 were eligible based on the inclusion criteria. The Egger test result and asymmetry in the funnel plot revealed significant publication bias; therefore, the meta-analysis model was corrected with the trim-and-fill method. After correction, the prevalence of rickettsial infections among dogs varies by genus - 20.1% for Anaplasma spp. and 10% for Ehrlichia spp. - with an overall prevalence estimated at 18.3% by random-effects analysis. The highest and lowest estimated pooled prevalences were associated with the southwestern (38.5%) and southern (0.3%) provinces of Iran, respectively. The pooled prevalence of rickettsial infection was higher in female dogs (OR = 1.198; p < 0.978; 95% CI, 0.842-1.705) and in dogs ≤2 years (OR = 1.014; p < 0.312; 95% CI, 0.598-1.72), but the difference was not statistically significant. Ultimately, the pooled prevalence of rickettsial infections among dogs is relatively low compared to other countries like Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, which are nearby Iran. Given the significant clinical outcomes of this disease, necessary measures for prevention should be taken.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major greenhouse gas. This study investigated the performance of three common algorithms, namely NIES, ACOS, and Remo Tec (SRFP). These algorithms were compared using GOSAT observation satellite data with reference data obtained from TCCON during the period 2009-2021. According to statistical evaluation, the SRFP and NIES algorithms achieved the lowest and highest correlation values of the 13 year (2009_2021) average of all sites, respectively. The average bias error values of NIES and ACOS was estimated to be less than that of SRFP approximately 0.5 ppm, while the bias within SRFP was of about 2 ppm. Comparing the RMSE and CRMS error values showed that the highest and lowest error values were related to the SRFP and NIES algorithms respectively, which were 0.37-1.67 and ppm 1.46-7.9. The researchers also compared them with monthly time changes based on ground measurements, and observed a time series of CO2 concentration changes that well matched the trend of gas concentration values at ground stations obtained by NIES algorithm. The results showed that in most cases NIES was an effective algorithm to retrieve carbon dioxide gas concentrations, allowing the researchers to identify the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in different areas. The clustering result in the study area showed that the continental CO2 columnar concentration has a specific seasonal cycle, with the maximum and minimum values appearing in winter-early spring and spring-late summer, respectively. In conclusion, cluster analysis can classify the surface CO2 column concentration values and determine the spatial distribution pattern of CO2.

OBJECTIVE: The strong antioxidant activity of Commiphora mukul prompted us to conduct the present study to explore whether treatment with C. mukul extract (CME) would have any protective influence on sperm parameters, testosterone levels, and plasma glucose levels in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, control animals treated with CME, diabetic animals, and diabetic animals treated with CME. CME extract (300 mg/kg) was administered for 60 days by daily gavage. Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg STZ. The epididymal sperm count, weight, motility, morphology, viability, and serum testosterone and glucose levels were determined. RESULTS: In the diabetic animals, CME decreased blood glucose levels (p<0.05), increased the total sperm count (p<0.05), and decreased the proportion of sperm with abnormal morphology (p<0.05). Diabetes reduced sperm motility (p<0.001), and CME supplementation partially reversed this effect of diabetes (p=0.003). Furthermore, in diabetic animals, CME decreased the proportion of immotile sperm (p<0.001). In rats, diabetes caused a significant decrease (p<0.05) in serum testosterone levels (F[3, 28]=3.283, p=0.035), but treatment of diabetic animals with CME increased serum testosterone levels. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that C. mukul possesses proandrogenic activity and exerts a beneficial effect on sperm parameters in diabetic rats.
