RESUMO
In response to the increasing global concern regarding water pollution, there is a growing demand for the development of novel adsorbents capable of effectively eliminating hazardous organic pollutants from effluents. In this study, we present a functional soy protein isolate (SPI)/sodium alginate (ALG)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) aerogel prepared via a facile chemical crosslinking process as a novel adsorbent with excellent capabilities for removing toxic methyl blue (MB) dye from effluents. Thanks to the synergistic dense oxygen and nitrogen-containing functional groups in the networks, the ALG/SPI/PEI (ASP) aerogel displayed high adsorption capacity for MB (106.3 mg/g) complying the adsorption kinetics and isotherm with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. Remarkably, the MB adsorption capability of the ASP aerogel surpasses that of its pristine counterpart and outperforms recently reported adsorbents. Moreover, the aerogel maintained >80% of initial adsorption capability in the fourth regenerative cycle, indicating excellent reusability. The superior MB adsorbability coupled with high-efficiency regenerability in this study reveal the significant potential of ASP aerogel in efficiently eliminating organic dye from wastewater.

Colloids often behave in a manner similar to their counterparts in molecular space and are used as model systems to understand molecular behavior. Here, we study like-charged colloidal attractions between a permanent dipole on an interfacial particle and its induced dipole on a water-immersed particle caused by diffuse layer polarization. We find that the scaling behavior of the measured dipole-induced dipole (DâI) interaction via optical laser tweezers is in good agreement with that predicted from the molecular Debye interaction. The dipole character propagates to form aggregate chains. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulations, we identify the separate roles of the DâI attraction and the van der Waals attraction on aggregate formation. The DâI attraction should be universal in a broad range of soft matter, such as colloids, polymers, clays, and biological materials, motivating researchers to further conduct in-depth research on these materials.
RESUMO
Herein, we represent a novel ecofriendly bilayer-amine group incorporated microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)/chitosan (CS) hydrogel, fabricated via integrating polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) for reliable and effective extraction of copper (Cu2+), zinc (Zn2+), and nickel (Ni2+) ions from effluents. Owing to abundant adsorptive sites, the MCC-PDA-PEI/CS-PDA-PEI hydrogel showed excellent Cu2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ adsorbabilities of ~434.8, ~277.7, and ~261.8 mg/g, respectively, in a single-ion adsorption system with the adsorption kinetics and isotherm complied with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. In a multi-ion adsorption system, hydrogel removes mixed metal cations with slightly higher selectivity for Cu2+. In accordance with X-ray photoelectron and Fourier-transform-infrared spectrometric analyses, a plausible binding mechanism of metal cations on the as-prepared hydrogel was proposed by chelation between hydrogel functional groups and metal ions. In the repetitive adsorption/desorption experiments, the hydrogel retained >40% metal ion adsorption and desorption capacities after four cycles. Furthermore, the Cu2+-adsorbing hydrogel could serve as a support for the in situ development of Cu nanoparticles, which showed excellent catalytic performance as demonstrated by the transformation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol. This work provides a novel ecofriendly, reusable, and highly-efficient adsorbent, as well as a biocatalyst for remediation of heavy metal cations and 4-NP polluted effluents.
