RESUMO

This article presented a new product development tool for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). People with IDD who also have extreme low literacy (ELL) have unique communication needs; public health communicators often face challenges developing effective communication materials for this audience. To support CDC communication specialists with the development of communication products for adults with IDD/ELL, CDC, with its partners RTI International and CommunicateHealth, created a product development tool for this audience through literature review, expert input, and interviews with adults with IDD/ELL and caregivers of adults with IDD/ELL. To build evidence around the principles described in the tool, RTI conducted interviewer-administered surveys with 100 caregivers who support people with IDD/ELL. During the interviews, we presented caregivers with stimuli (portions of a communication product) that either did or did not apply a single principle and asked which would be easier for the person they support to understand. Across all 14 principles tested, the caregiver respondents indicated that the principle-based version would be easier for the person they support to understand compared with the non-principle-based version(s). These findings provide additional evidence to support the principles included in CDC's Tool for Developing Products for People with IDD/ELL.

INTRODUCTION: Children aged two to five years old are influenced by the behaviors of their guardians and Early Care Education (ECE) teachers. This study aims to determine the relationship between adults' and children's health behaviors in home and ECE settings. This study is novel in examining this correlation between multiple environments. METHOD: Surveys were conducted across 32 ECE centers. Guardians and teachers reported on their and their children's health behaviors within the home and ECE. Matched child-adult responses (n = 1,140) were analyzed from a representative sample of 32 ECE centers throughout Georgia. Frequency of consumption of fruits, vegetables, and water, as well as frequency of physical activity were measured. Spearman rho correlations were analyzed using SPSS software, with p < 0.05 indicating significance. RESULTS: Spearman rho correlations indicated significant positive correlations between guardian and child behavior (rho = 0.49 to 0.70, p < 0.001) for all data. Teacher and child correlations were inconsistently significant across categories (rho = -0.11 to 0.17, p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: The influence of guardian behavior modeling on child health outcomes is critical for improving ECE programming and child obesity outcomes. This research can be used to inform future health interventions for young children.

We review evidence that suggests a role for excessive consumption of energy-dense foods, particularly fructose, and consequent obesity and insulin resistance (metabolic syndrome) in the recent increase in prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Maternal insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes may predispose offspring to ASD by mechanisms involving chronic activation of anabolic cellular pathways and a lack of metabolic switching to ketosis resulting in a deficit in GABAergic signaling and neuronal network hyperexcitability. Metabolic reprogramming by epigenetic DNA and chromatin modifications may contribute to alterations in gene expression that result in ASD. These mechanistic insights suggest that interventions that improve metabolic health such as intermittent fasting and exercise may ameliorate developmental neuronal network abnormalities and consequent behavioral manifestations in ASD.

Sideroflexin 1 (Sfxn1) is a mitochondrial serine transporter involved in one-carbon metabolism in blood and cancer cell lines. The expression of other Sfxn homologs varies across tissues implying that each homolog may have tissue-specific functions. RNA databases suggest that among the Sfxns, Sfxn3 may have a specific function in the brain. Here, we systematically analyzed the level, cellular distribution, and subcellular localization of Sfxn3 protein in the developing and adult rodent brain. We found that, in the cortex and hippocampus, Sfxn3 protein level is low at birth but increases during development and remains at a high level in the mature brains. Similarly, in cultured hippocampal neurons, Sfxn3 protein level is low in young neurons but increases as neurons mature. Sfxn3 protein level is much higher in neurons than in astrocytes. Within neurons, Sfxn3 localizes to mitochondria in all major neuronal compartments. Our results establish that Sfxn3 is a mitochondrial protein enriched in neurons wherein it is developmentally expressed. These findings provide a foundation for future research aimed at understanding the functions of Sfxn3 and one-carbon metabolism in neurons.

Beyond its role in patterning the neural tube during embryogenesis, additional functions of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) in post-embryonic and mature brains have been coming into focus. However, the question of the abundance of endogenous Shh - the ligand of the signaling pathway - and its changes over time in post-embryonic and mature brains are less well understood. Here we find that while the amounts of Shh transcript and protein in rat brains are nearly undetectable at birth, they increase continuously during postnatal development and remain at readily detectable levels in young adults. This developmental age-associated increase in Shh levels is also seen in hippocampal neurons grown in culture, in which very young neurons produce minimal amounts of Shh protein but, as neurons grow and form synapses, the amounts of Shh increase significantly. Using immunolabeling with antibodies to different residues of Shh, we observed that the N-terminal fragment and the C-terminal fragment of Shh are present in hippocampal neurons, and that these two Shh forms co-exist in most compartments of the neuron. Our findings provide a better understanding of Shh expression in the brain, laying the groundwork for further comprehending the biogenesis of Shh protein in the young and mature brain and neurons.

Thirty-five women participating in one or more intramural flag-football games provided saliva samples before, immediately after, and 10min after competition and completed an after-competition questionnaire appraising their own performance during the game. As seen in other studies of elite athletes, these recreational athletes, on average, showed significant elevations in testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) across the competition period - the "competition effect". In winners and losers, T levels at all time points measured were positively related to athletes' appraisals of their own individual performance. Results from this study show that the competition effect for T and C is evident in recreational women athletes and provide preliminary evidence about the relationship between cognitive appraisal and competition-related T levels.
