Cowpea is a widely cultivated crop in the world. Biofortification strategies aim to reduce mineral and protein deficiencies, especially among the poorest people. The aim of this study was to estimate adaptability and stability of cowpea genotypes for iron, zinc and protein contents, through GGE biplot analysis. Twenty cowpea genotypes were evaluated in the municipalities of Piauí Monsenhor Hipólito, Pio IX and São Miguel do Tapuio, under rainfed conditions. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications. The traits evaluated were grain yield, iron, zinc and protein contents in dry grains. Iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and protein contents by Kjeldahl methods. Adaptability and stability were evaluated by GGE biplot analyses. The means of the experiments were 1,209.1 kg ha-1, 51.1 mg kg-1, 46.8 mg kg-1 and 24.3% for grain yield, Fe, Zn and protein contents, respectively. The joint analysis of variance showed significant difference (p < 0.05) for the effect of interaction genotypes by environments for Fe, Zn and protein contents. The lines G6 and G8 were the most promising for grain yield, mineral and protein content through adaptability and stability by GGE biplot approach.

BACKGROUND: Biofortification is a method that improves the nutritional value of food crops through conventional plant breeding. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of intra-amniotic administration of soluble extracts from zinc (Zn) biofortified and Zn standard cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) flour on intestinal functionality and morphology, inflammation, and gut microbiota, in vivo. METHODS: Seven treatment groups were utilized: (1) No Injection; (2) 18 MΩ H2O; (3) 50 mg/mL Inulin; (4) 50 mg/mL BRS Pajeú soluble extract (Zn standard); (5) 50 mg/mL BRS Aracê soluble extract (Zn biofortified); (6) 50 mg/mL BRS Imponente soluble extract (Zn biofortified); (7) 50 mg/mL BRS Xiquexique soluble extract (Zn biofortified). RESULTS: Treatment groups with BRS Imponente and BRS Xiquexique reduced the abundance of Clostridium and E. coli when compared with all other experimental groups. All cowpea soluble extracts increased villi goblet cell number (total), specifically acidic goblet cell type number per villi relative to inulin and 18MΩ H2O groups. Moreover, BRS Xiquexique increased the crypt goblet diameter and the crypt depth compared to all treatments and controls. The Zn content in the Zn biofortified cowpea flours was higher when compared to the Zn standard flour (BRS Pajeú), and the phytate: Zn molar ratio was lower in the Zn biofortified flours compared to the Zn standard flour. In general, all cowpea soluble extracts maintained the gene expression of proteins involved with Zn and iron absorption, brush border membrane (BBM) functionality and inflammation compared to inulin and 18MΩ H2O. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the potential nutritional benefit of standard and biofortified cowpea treatment groups to improve intestinal morphology, BBM functionality, inflammation, and gut microbiota, with the highest effect of BRS Xiquexique soluble extracts to improve assessed cecal microflora populations and intestinal morphology.

BACKGORUND: Cowpea is a crop widely used in developing countries due its rusticity. Besides its rich genotypic variability, most breeding programs do not explore its potential to improve elements uptake. Selenium (Se) is a scarce element in most soils, resulting in its deficiency being common in human diets. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between biofortification with Se and genotypic variation in cowpea, on the concentrations of Se in roots, leaves + stem and grains. METHODS: Twenty-nine cowpea genotypes were grown in a greenhouse in the absence (control) and presence of Se (12.5 µg Se kg-1 soil) as sodium selenate, in fully randomized scheme. The plants were cultivated until grains harvest. The following variables were determined: roots dry weight (g), leaves + stems dry weight (g), grains dry weight (g), Se concentration (mg kg-1) in roots, leaves + stems and grains, and Se partitioning to shoots and grains. RESULTS: Selenium application increased the Se concentration in roots, leaves + stems and grains in all genotypes. At least twofold variation in grain Se concentration was observed among genotypes. Selenium application did not impair biomass accumulation, including grain dry weight. Genotype "BRS Guariba" had the largest Se concentration in grains and leaves + stems. Genotype MNC04-795 F-158 had the largest partitioning of Se to shoots and grain, due to elevated dry weights of leaves + stems and grain, and high Se concentrations in these tissues. CONCLUSION: This information might be valuable in future breeding programs to select for genotypes with better abilities to accumulate Se in grain to reduce widespread human Se undernutrition.

Dietary zinc (Zn) deficiency is widespread globally, and is particularly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) is consumed widely in LMICs due to its high protein content, and has potential for use in agronomic biofortification strategies using Zn. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Zn biofortification on grain nutritional quality of 29 cowpea genotypes. Zn application did not increase cowpea yield. In 11 genotypes sucrose concentration, in 12 genotypes total sugar concentration, and in 27 genotypes storage protein concentration increased in response to Zn supply. Fifteen genotypes had lower concentrations of amino acids under Zn application, which are likely to have been converted into storage proteins, mostly comprised of albumin. Phytic acid (PA) concentration and PA/Zn molar ratio were decreased under Zn application. Six genotypes increased shoot ureides concentration in response to Zn fertilization, indicating potential improvements to biological nitrogen fixation. This study provides valuable information on the potential for Zn application to increase cowpea grain nutritional quality by increasing Zn and soluble storage protein and decreasing PA concentration. These results might be useful for future breeding programs aiming to increase cowpea grain Zn concentrations through biofortification.

ABSTRACT: The potential expression of crop productivity is a constant challenge for plant breeders in the face of oscillations in environmental variables, making selection difficult and increasing the operational and methodological costs in obtaining the ideal cultivar for a determined region. The objective of the research was to investigate the effects of genotype x environment interaction in the selection of cowpea lines with high grain yield, adaptability, and genotypic stability simultaneously, in environments of the Northwest region of Rio de Janeiro State, using mixed models (Maximum Restricted Likelihood - REML/Best Linear Unbiased Prediction - BLUP). 27 cowpea genotypes were evaluated in six environments by combining location (Cambuci-RJ and Bom Jesus do Itabapoana-RJ) and year (2016, 2017 and 2018). A randomized block design with four replications was performed. The genetic parameters were estimated via the REML/BLUP procedure, and the selection was based on the harmonic mean method of the relative performance of the genetic values (HMRPGV). A meaningful difference was observed for environment and genotype x environment interaction. The residual variance and the variance of the genotype x environment interaction formed the most significant fractions of the phenotypic variance. Lines 4 (Bico-de-ouro 1-5-24), 6 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-4), 5 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-26), and 9 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-8), stood out as superior in terms of stability and adaptability and grain yield by HMRPGV. Commercial cultivars 13 (BRS-Tumucumaque) and 26 (BRS-Itaim) had high grain yield, adaptability, and specific stability in the evaluated edaphoclimatic conditions.


RESUMO: A expressão potencial da produtividade das culturas constitui um desafio constante aos criadores de plantas frente às oscilações das variáveis ambientais, dificultando a seleção e onerando os custos operacionais e metodológicos na obtenção da cultivar ideal para determinada região. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar os efeitos da interação genótipos x ambientes na seleção de linhagens de feijão-caupi com alta produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade genotípica simultaneamente, em ambientes da região Noroeste do estado do Rio de Janeiro, usando modelos mistos (Máximo Verosimilhança Restrita - REML/Melhor Predição Linear não Viesado - BLUP). Avaliou-se 27 genótipos de feijão-caupi em seis ambientes pela combinação de local (Cambuci-RJ e Bom Jesus do Itabapoana-RJ) e ano (2016, 2017 e 2018). Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados via procedimento REML/BLUP, e a seleção baseou-se no método da média harmônica do desempenho relativo dos valores genéticos (HMRPGV). Observou-se diferença significativa para ambiente e interação genótipo x ambiente. A variância residual e a variância da interação genótipo x ambiente formaram as maiores frações da variância fenotípica. As linhagens 4 (Bico-de-ouro 1-5-24), 6 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-4), 5 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-26) e 9 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-8) foram classificadas como superiores quanto a estabilidade e adaptabilidade e rendimento de grãos pelo critério da HMRPGV. As cultivares comerciais 13 (BRS-Tumucumaque) e 26 (BRS-Itaim) reuniram elevada produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade específica nas condições edafoclimáticas avaliadas.

Currently, cowpea growing covers three Brazilian regions, making essential the investigation of the magnitude of genotype x environment essential for choosing the best selection strategy and recommendation of cultivars. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adaptability and phenotypic stability of semi-prostate cowpea genotypes in sites from State of Mato Grosso do Sul based on different methodologies. We conducted four value of cultivation and use testing with lines and cultivars of cowpea genotypes in the years 2005 and 2006 in the municipalities of Aquidauana, Chapadão do Sul and Dourados. The experimental design was randomized complete block with 20 treatments and four replications. The grain yield data were submitted to individual and joint analysis of variance. Subsequently, data were submitted to adaptability and stability analysis by Eberhart and Russell (1966), Yates and Cochran (1938) (traditional) and Wricke (1965) methodologies. The genotypes BRS Xiquexique, TE97-304G-12, BR 17- Gurguéia and MNC99-541F-15 are the most suitable for growing in Mato Grosso do Sul by combine high yield grain, adaptability and phenotypic stability.


Atualmente o cultivo do feijão-caupi abrange três regiões do Brasil, o que torna a investigação da magnitude da interação genótipo × ambiente imprescindível para a escolha da melhor estratégia de seleção e recomendação de cultivares. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade fenotípica de genótipos de feijão-caupi de porte semiprostrado em locais do Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul com base em diferentes metódos. Foram conduzidos quatro ensaios de valor de cultivo e uso com linhagens e cultivares de genótipos de feijão-caupi nos anos de 2005 e 2006, nos municípios de Aquidauana, Chapadão do Sul e Dourados. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos completos casualizados, com 20 tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os dados de produtividade de grãos foram submetidos a análises de variância individual e conjunta. Posteriormente, foram realizadas análises de adaptabilidade e estabilidade por meio dos métodos de Eberhart e Russell (1966), Yates e Cochran (1938) (tradicional) e de Wricke (1965). Os genótipos BRS Xiquexique, TE97-304G-12, BR 17-Gurguéia e MNC99-541F-15 são os mais indicados para o cultivo no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, pois aliam alta produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade fenotípica.

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional intervention in pre-school children using cookies prepared with wheat flour enriched with iron and folic acid (CWFFeFA) and cookies prepared with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) flour fortified with iron and zinc and wheat flour enriched with iron and folic acid (CCFFeZn + WFFeFA). OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of the ingestion of CWFFeFA and CCFFeZn + WFFeFA by pre-school children, using the cowpea variety BRS-Xiquexique, to control iron-deficiency anaemia. METHODS: Nutritional intervention was conducted in municipal day care centres selected at random (n = 262) involving pre-school children aged 2 to 5 years living in Teresina, state of Piauí, Brazil. To assess the socioeconomic data, BMI-for-age, haemoglobin levels before and after intervention, and dietary intake, the children were divided into group 1 (G1), which received CWFFeFA (30 g), and group 2 (G2), which received CCFFeZn + WFFeFA (30 g). Food acceptance was evaluated daily. RESULTS: The prevalence of anaemia in G1 and G2 before the nutritional intervention was 12.2% (n = 18) and 11.5% (n = 30), respectively. After intervention, the prevalence decreased to 1.4% in G1 (n = 2) and to 4.2% in G2 (n = 11). Food acceptance by pre-school children in G1 and G2 was 97.4% and 94.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The use of both types of cookie formulations decreased the prevalence of anaemia among pre-school children, and CCFFeZn + WFFeFA yielded the greatest decrease.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o grau de correlação entre parâmetros que avaliam a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade da produtividade de óleo em soja. Os parâmetros foram estimados a partir da análise de dados resultantes da avaliação de 93 linhagens de soja, divididas em três ciclos de maturação (28 precoces, 38 semiprecoces e 27 intermediárias). Os ensaios foram conduzidos em doze ambientes do município de Piracicaba, SP, Brasil. Os seguintes parâmetros foram correlacionados: média geral (m i), coeficiente de regressão (b i), ecovalência de Wricke (ômegaWi), ecovalência AMMI (ômegaAi), variância dos desvios da regressão (sigma2di) e coeficiente de determinação (R²i). Utilizou-se a correlação (r) de Sperman do ordenamento das linhagens, segundo cada parâmetro. As correlações entre m i e b i e entre os parâmetros de estabilidade entre si (ômegaWi, ômegaAi, sigma2di e R²i) foram positivas e significativas (0,53 < r < 0,93) . As correlações entre os parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade foram baixas ou negativas e não significativas (-0,39 < r < 0,38), exceto entre b i e R²i (r = 0,49 e 0,89 para as linhagens precoces e intermediárias, respectivamente). Os parâmetros de estabilidade classificam a ordem das linhagens de forma similar e, provavelmente, pertencem ao mesmo conceito de estabilidade. Os resultados indicam que é difícil a seleção simultânea para adaptabilidade e estabilidade da produtividade de óleo em soja.


The objective of this work was to determine the degree of correlation among parameters that evaluate oil yield adaptability and stability in soybean. The parameters were estimated starting from data analysis resultants of the evaluation of 93 soybean lines divided in three maturation cycles (28 early, 38 semiearly and 27 intermediate). The trials were carried out in twelve environments of the municipal district of Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. The following parameters were correlated: grand mean (m i), regression coefficient (b i), Wricke ecovalence (omegadi), AMMI ecovalence (omegaAi), regression deviations variance (sigma2di) and determination coefficient (R²i). The parameters were compared using the ranking Sperman correlation of the lines, according to each parameter. The correlations among m i and b i and among the parameters of stability to each other (omegadi,omegaAi, sigma2di and R²i) were positive and significant (0.53

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade da produtividade de grãos de 15 genótipos de feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata) utilizando o modelo de efeitos principais aditivos e interação multiplicativa. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em 13 ambientes, nos Estados do Piaui e Maranhão, no período de 1999 a 2001. Os resultados mostraram a existência de poucas diferenças entre genótipos, mas os efeitos de ambientes, interação genótipos x ambientes e os três primeiros eixos da análise de componentes principais da interação foram altamente significativos (P<0,01). A análise de componentes principais explicou 72,82 por cento da soma de quadrados da interação genótipos x ambientes. Os genótipos Evx 91-2E e Evx 63-4E aprentam alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade, os quais podem ser cultivados em todos os ambientes do região Meio-Norte (Piauí e Maranhão). Os genótipos Evx 47-6E e Evx 92-49E mostraram-se adaptados a ambientes de baixa produtividade, enquanto que o genótipo Evx 63-10E apresentou a maior média e adaptação específica a ambientes de alta qualidade. Os ambientes Brejo-MA, 2001 e Bom Jesus-PI, 2000 foram os mais previsíveis, enquanto Teresina, PI, 2001 e Baixa Grande do Ribeiro, PI, 2001, altamente instáveis. A interação genótipos x ambientes é variável dentro e homogênea entre os Estados do Piauí e Maranhão em termos de qualidade ambiental.
