RESUMO

Independent physiotherapy at home is a crucial element of rehabilitative care for a wide range of conditions as it constitutes a large portion of the overall therapy dose. However, up to 80% of individuals who are prescribed at-home physiotherapy do not consistently adhere to their treatment schedule, resulting in poor treatment outcomes. This is likely due to a lack of motivation and progress tracking in the current standard of care. We have developed a novel software prototype that allows users to control commercial entertainment content, such as video games or interactive music videos, with their movements during physiotherapy. By connecting therapy to proven entertainment content, we aim to improve on the current motivational deficits. This study investigated the safety and feasibility of this concept in a controlled environment over four physical therapy sessions with seven patients suffering from musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. As a secondary outcome, patients were asked about their enjoyment, perceived competence and effort using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) questionnaire. All participants were able to interact with the presented entertainment content and completed the study with no adverse events. Despite the diversity in pathology, age and training scenarios, the entertainment content maintained the patients' enjoyment with a high average rate of 6/7 on the IMI scale. Interacting with commercial entertainment content by doing physical therapy exercises was feasible, safe, and well-received over the six-week study period.

RESUMO

Three of the main challenges in achieving rapid decarbonization of the electric power sector in the near term are getting to net-zero while maintaining grid reliability and minimizing cost. In this policy analysis, we evaluate the performance of a variety of generation strategies using this "triple objective" including nuclear, renewables with different energy storage options, and carbon-emitting generation with carbon capture and storage (CCS) and direct air capture and storage (DACS) technologies. Given the current U.S. tax credits for carbon sequestration under Section 45Q of the Internal Revenue Code, we find that two options: (1) cofiring bioenergy in existing coal-fired assets equipped with CCS, and (2) coupling existing natural gas combined-cycle plants equipped with CCS and DACS, robustly dominate other generation strategies across many assumptions and uncertainties. As a result, capacity-expansion modelers, planners, and policymakers should consider such combinations of carbon-constrained fossil-fuel and negative emissions technologies, together with modifications of the current national incentives, when designing the pathways to a carbon-free economy.

RESUMO

Polarization measurements conducted with a polarization camera using the Sony IMX 250 MZR polarization image sensor are assessed with the super-pixel calibration technique and a simple test setup. We define an error that quantifies the quality of the polarization measurements. Multiple factors influencing the measurement quality of the polarization camera are investigated and discussed. We demonstrate that polarization measurements are generally consistent throughout the sensor if not corrupted by large chief ray angles or large angles of incidence. The central 600×400pixels were analyzed, and it is shown that sufficiently large f-numbers no longer influence measurement quality. We also argue that lens design and focal length have little influence on these central pixels. The findings of this study provide useful guidance for researchers using such a polarization image sensor.

RESUMO

A two-dimensional birefringence measurement method is described. In this procedure, we send light through a rotatable linear polarizer and subsequently through a transparent and birefringent specimen. A polarization camera measures the state of linear polarization from which the relative position of the refractive index axes and the relative phase difference is determined. The measurement range of the phase difference is up to π rad, which corresponds to an optical retardation of half the wavelength of the light. The imaging system can measure a large sample area within one measurement cycle. Measurement performance is demonstrated with a quarter-wave plate, and an exemplary test case is shown.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a multitude of decision problems for a variety of fields. Questions from the seriousness and breadth of the problem to the effectiveness of proposed mitigation measures have been raised. We assert that the decision sciences have a crucial role to play here, as the questions requiring answers involve complex decision making under both uncertainty and ambiguity. The collection, processing, and analysis of data is critical in providing a useful response-especially as information of fundamental importance to such decision making (base rates and transmission rates) is lacking. We propose that scarce testing resources should be diverted away from confirmatory analysis of symptomatic people, as laboratory diagnosis appears to have little decision value in treatment choice over clinical diagnosis in patients presenting with symptoms. In contrast, the exploratory use of testing resources to reduce ambiguity in estimates of the base rate of infection appears to have significant value and great practical import for public policy purposes. As these stances may be at odds with triage practices among medical practitioners, they highlight the important role the decision analyst can play in responding to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
