This study aimed to compare the most demanding scenarios (MDS) of under-19 professional soccer players during official matches, controlling for contextual factors such as playing position, the level of opponent teams, playing venue, match status, playing surface, pitch size, and playing status of players. A total of 42 players were monitored across 27 games using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to collect the external loads, including total distance covered, high-speed running, sprint distance, accelerations, and decelerations. MDS were calculated across 1-minute, 5-minute, and 10-minute time windows for each variable. Significant differences were found based on the contextual factors. (i) Opponent level did not show significant differences; (ii) full-backs covered more distance at 1 minute in home games; (iii) midfielders in winning vs. drawing scenarios exhibited higher decelerations at 1 minute but less distance at 10 minutes; (iv) in drawing vs. losing scenarios, central defenders had greater distance at 5 minutes and accelerations at 5 minutes, while midfielders showed greater distances at 1 minute, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes; (v) offensive midfielders and forwards displayed specific performance differences; (vi) no significant differences were found for the playing surface; (vii) regarding pitch size, full-backs covered more distance at 5 minutes on larger pitches, while midfielders covered more distance at 5 minutes and 10 minutes; and (viii) starters generally outperformed non-starter players across various variables depending on the playing positions. The findings suggest that contextual factors have a significant impact on soccer player performance across different playing positions.

Clostridioides difficile is a spore-forming pathogen and the most common cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea and colitis in the United States. Besides producing the main virulence factors, toxin A (TcdA) and toxin B (TcdB), many of the common clinical strains encode the C. difficile transferase (CDT) binary toxin. The role of CDT in the context of C. difficile infection (CDI) is poorly understood. Inflammation is a hallmark of CDI and multiple mechanisms of inflammasome activation have been reported for TcdA, TcdB, and the organism. Some studies have suggested that CDT contributes to this inflammation through a TLR2-dependent priming mechanism that leads to the suppression of protective eosinophils. Here, we show that CDT does not prime but instead activates the inflammasome in bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs). In bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs), the cell binding and pore-forming component of the toxin, CDTb, alone activates the inflammasome and is dependent on K+ efflux. The activation is not observed in the presence of CDTa and is not observed in BMDMs derived from Nlrp3-/- mice suggesting the involvement of the NLRP3 inflammasome. However, we did not observe evidence of CDT-dependent inflammasome priming or activation in vivo. Mice were infected with R20291 and an isogenic CRISPR/Cas9-generated R20291 ΔcdtB strain of C. difficile. While CDT contributes to increased weight loss and cecal edema at 2 days post infection, the relative levels of inflammasome-associated cytokines, IL-1ß and IL-18, in the cecum and distal colon are unchanged. We also saw CDT-dependent weightloss in Nlrp3-/- mice, suggesting that the increased weightloss associated with the presence of CDT is not a result of NLRP3-dependent inflammasome activation. This study highlights the importance of studying gene deletions in the context of otherwise fully isogenic strains and the challenge of translating toxin-specific cellular responses into a physiological context, especially when multiple toxins are acting at the same time.

ICVB-1042 is an oncolytic adenovirus containing modifications to enhance replication, lysis, and viral spreading in tumor cells. The anti-tumor activity, immune activation, tropism, selectivity, and mechanism of action were evaluated in preparation for a first-in-human study. ICVB-1042 was at least 100-fold more cytotoxic in A549 cells than in normal primary cells tested, demonstrating its high tumor selectivity and a low likelihood of targeting primary tissues. ICVB-1042 administered to mice intravenously or intratumorally was effective in reducing tumor burden. Its intravenous administration also inhibited tumor growth in orthotopic models. ICVB-1042 was well tolerated in mice compared to HAdV-C5 (Wt Ad5), with reduced liver sequestration, supporting safety of the drug for systemic delivery. These preclinical data demonstrating the safety and potency of ICVB-1042 for treatment of various solid tumors support the ongoing clinical investigation (NCT05904236).

Haptic rendering of weight plays an essential role in naturalistic object interaction in virtual environments. While kinesthetic devices have traditionally been used for this aim by applying forces on the limbs, tactile interfaces acting on the skin have recently offered potential solutions to enhance or substitute kinesthetic ones. Here, we aim to provide an in-depth overview and comparison of existing tactile weight rendering approaches. We categorized these approaches based on their type of stimulation into asymmetric vibration and skin stretch, further divided according to the working mechanism of the devices. Then, we compared these approaches using various criteria, including physical, mechanical, and perceptual characteristics of the reported devices. We found that asymmetric vibration devices have the smallest form factor, while skin stretch devices relying on the motion of flat surfaces, belts, or tactors present numerous mechanical and perceptual advantages for scenarios requiring more accurate weight rendering. Finally, we discussed the selection of the proposed categorization of devices together with the limitations and opportunities for future research. We hope this study guides the development and use of tactile interfaces to achieve a more naturalistic object interaction and manipulation in virtual environments.

Aim: To determine the efficacy and safety of pharmacogenomics (PGx)-guided antidepressant prescribing in patients with depression through an umbrella review and updated meta-analysis. Methods: A comprehensive systematic search was conducted on PsycINFO, PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane databases. The pooled effect sizes of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were expressed as mean differences for continuous data and risk ratios for noncontinuous data. Results: Patients who received PGx-guided medications were 41% to 78% more likely to achieve remission and 20% to 49% more likely to respond to antidepressants than patients receiving treatment-as-usual (TAU). Conclusion: PGx-guided antidepressant prescribing improves the treatment of depression. However, the significance and magnitude of the benefit varies widely between studies and different PGx testing panels. Brain endurance training improves and maintains chest press and squat jump performance when fatigued. J Strength Cond Res 38(9): 1568-1575, 2024-Mental fatigue can impair resistance exercise performance. Brain endurance training (BET)-the addition of demanding cognitive tasks to standard exercise training-improves endurance exercise performance more than standard training. Although BET has yet to be evaluated with resistance exercise, it is expected to improve performance, particularly when the performer feels mentally fatigued. The study employed a pretest (week 0), midtest (week 3), posttest (week 6), and follow-up (week 9) design, with subjects randomized to BET ( n = 46) or control (exercise training) ( n = 45) groups. In testing sessions, subjects performed chest press and squat jump exercises to failure before (feeling fresh) and after (feeling tired) a 30-minute cognitively demanding Stroop task. Training comprised 5 BET or control training sessions per week for 6 weeks. In each training session, subjects completed 4 sets of each exercise to failure, with each exercise set preceded by a 3-minute cognitive task (BET) or rest (control). Exercise performance (number of repetitions to failure) and mental fatigue markers were assessed. In pretesting, exercise performance did not differ between the groups. In midtesting and posttesting, BET performed more chest press and squat jump repetitions when fatigued by the 30-minute Stroop than control. The mental fatigue elicited by the Stroop task gradually declined with training in BET compared with control. In conclusion, BET enhanced resistance exercise performance compared with standard training when tested subsequent to a mentally fatiguing cognitive task. These benefits were maintained weeks after training ended. Brain endurance training is an effective method to mitigate the deleterious effects of mental fatigue on resistance exercise performance.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a complex chronic disease associated with several adverse health outcomes that increase mortality risk. Physical activity (PA) is recommended for the prevention and treatment of obesity and is related to a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and all-cause mortality. This systematic review and meta-analysis estimates the effect of PA levels on mortality (cardiovascular, cancer and all-cause mortality) in adults with obesity. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus from inception to June 2024. Prospective cohort studies that explored the association between PA and mortality in adults with obesity (according to their body mass index, ≥ 30 kg/m2) aged ≥ 18 years were included. Our main outcomes were all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular, and cancer mortality reported in primary studies by hazard ratios or relative risk, which were pooled for the meta-analysis when at least two studies reported the effect estimate for the same outcome. The PRISMA recommendations and the MOOSE guidelines were followed. The reported mortality risk estimates comparing insufficiently active versus active (moderate to very active) adults with obesity were pooled using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model. RESULTS: A total of 9 prospective cohort studies involving 199,425 adults with obesity (age range: 35-85 years) were included, of which 59,873 were insufficiently active and 84,328 were active. Active individuals had a 21% lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 0.79, 95%CI: 0.74 to 0.84; I2 = 38.2%), and a 24% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality (HR: 0.76, 95%CI: 0.66 to 0.87; I2 = 0.0%) than insufficiently active individuals. The HR for cancer mortality was 0.91 (95%CI: 0.80 to 1.02; I2 = 0.0%), and although this was mostly consistent with a benefit, it was based on only two studies. CONCLUSION: Our data support that moderate to high levels of PA are associated with a 21% lower risk of all-cause and 24% cardiovascular disease mortality in adults with obesity. Although data from the only two published studies seem to indicate a protective effect of PA on cancer risk, the estimates are not statistically significant. In lactating mothers, the high calcium (Ca2+) demand for milk production triggers significant bone loss1. Although oestrogen normally counteracts excessive bone resorption by promoting bone formation, this sex steroid drops precipitously during this postpartum period. Here we report that brain-derived cellular communication network factor 3 (CCN3) secreted from KISS1 neurons of the arcuate nucleus (ARCKISS1) fills this void and functions as a potent osteoanabolic factor to build bone in lactating females. We began by showing that our previously reported female-specific, dense bone phenotype2 originates from a humoral factor that promotes bone mass and acts on skeletal stem cells to increase their frequency and osteochondrogenic potential. This circulatory factor was then identified as CCN3, a brain-derived hormone from ARCKISS1 neurons that is able to stimulate mouse and human skeletal stem cell activity, increase bone remodelling and accelerate fracture repair in young and old mice of both sexes. The role of CCN3 in normal female physiology was revealed after detecting a burst of CCN3 expression in ARCKISS1 neurons coincident with lactation. After reducing CCN3 in ARCKISS1 neurons, lactating mothers lost bone and failed to sustain their progeny when challenged with a low-calcium diet. Our findings establish CCN3 as a potentially new therapeutic osteoanabolic hormone for both sexes and define a new maternal brain hormone for ensuring species survival in mammals.

Dairy products are an important source of protein and other nutrients in the Mediterranean diet. In these countries, the most common sources of milk for producing dairy products are cow, goat, sheep, and buffalo. Andalusia is traditionally the largest producer of goat milk in Spain. Kefir is a fermented product made from bacteria and yeasts and has health benefits beyond its nutritional properties. There is a lack of knowledge about the molecular mechanisms and metabolites that bring about these benefits. In this work, the combination of analytical techniques (GC-FID, UHPLC-MS-QToF, GC-QqQ-MS, and GC-ToF-MS) resulted in the detection of 105 metabolites in kefir produced with goat milk from two different thermal treatments (raw and pasteurized) fermented at four time points (12, 24, 36, and 48 h, using 0 h as the control). Of these, 27 metabolites differed between kefir produced with raw and pasteurized milk. These changes could possibly be caused by the effect of pasteurization on the microbial population in the starting milk. Some interesting molecules were identified, such as shikimic acid, dehydroabietic acid, GABA, and tyramine, which could be related to antibacterial properties, strengthening of the immune system, and arterial pressure. Moreover, a viability assay of the NIRS technique was performed to evaluate its use in monitoring the fermentation and classification of samples, which resulted in a 90% accuracy in comparison to correctly classified samples according to their fermentation time. This study represents the most comprehensive metabolomic analysis of goat milk kefir so far, revealing the intricate changes in metabolites during fermentation and the impact of milk treatment.

The objective was to assess the association of the overall score and different items of the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) questionnaire with academic achievement in Spanish university students. We hypothesized that university students with greater adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) would have better academic achievement. A cross-sectional study was performed involving 266 first-year students from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, during the 2017-2018 academic year. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was evaluated with the 14-item MEDAS questionnaire. As an indicator variable for academic achievement, the average marks of the examinations required for access to Spanish universities were used. A total of 63 participants (23.6%) adhered to MedDiet recommendations. Analysis of covariance models showed that participants with higher adherence to the MedDiet had significantly higher scores on academic achievement than their peers with low adherence (P < .001) after controlling for potential confounders. Additionally, the evaluation of each item of the MEDAS questionnaire showed that a diet rich in olive oil, vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish and shellfish, and a low consumption of sweets and carbonated beverages were positively associated with academic achievement; nevertheless, wine intake was inversely associated. This study showed that Spanish university students had a low prevalence of good adherence to the MedDiet. Additionally, our results suggested that higher adherence to the MedDiet is associated with better academic achievement in Spanish university students. From a public health perspective and because of low adherence, it is important to continue to focus on promoting adherence to the MedDiet as part of a healthy lifestyle pattern to improve the academic performance of young university students.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although some studies have related social media use and depressive symptoms, little is known about the role of psychoactive substance use in this relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the association between time spent on social media (TSSM) and depressive symptoms and to examine whether this relationship is mediated by psychoactive substances in students. METHODS: Our cross-sectional analysis included a sample of students from a university in a large city in southern Brazil. The TSSM and tobacco frequency of consumption were self-reported. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire. Alcohol and illicit drug-related risks were assessed with the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test. Hayes's PROCESS macro was used for mediation analyses, adjusted for age, sex, body mass index and physical activity. RESULTS: A total of 3161 students were included, of which, 69.0% reported moderate to severe depressive symptoms. The association between TSSM and depressive symptoms was statistically significant and partially mediated by tobacco consumption (indirect effect [IE] = 0.05; 95% CI: 0.02-0.08), alcohol-related risk (IE = 0.19; 95% CI: 0.14-0.25), and illicit drug-related risk (IE = 0.08; 95% CI: 0.05-0.12). CONCLUSION AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Our data suggest a direct relationship between TSSM and depressive symptoms, with a partial mediation effect of psychoactive substance use. This study highlights the importance that public health initiatives aimed at preventing depressive problems in young adults should focus not only on TSSM, but also on controlling and reducing psychoactive substance use.

BACKGROUND: The article discusses the contribution of personal assistance for the independent living of people with disabilities. This right is evolving at different speeds internationally, presents controversial aspects, and is under continuous debate. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the evidence relating to the promotion of self-determination and independent living through personal assistance. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A search for relevant literature published was conducted during March 2023 across nine databases. The findings of the included studies were coded and analyzed via inductive content analysis. RESULTS: 26 articles were included, mostly qualitative, from four different continents. The analysis revealed six different key themes. The social framework highlighted the influence of international agreements and disability activism on cultural shifts in understanding disability. Secondly, healthy relationships and life or service expectations were emphasized. Key agents included users, personal assistants, family members, service providers, and other professionals. Personal assistants' work context explored ethical dilemmas, training, and working rights. Decision-making about personal assistance involved factors like lack of information, access requirements, and funding. Lastly, the implications underscored the positive impact of personal assistance on independent living, while identifying threats, and best practices for improvement. CONCLUSION: This systematic review was the first to explore the promotion of independent living of people with disabilities through personal assistance schemes and highlights the need for governments to prioritize and coordinate efforts to ensure access for all, emphasizing the ethical imperative to progress toward social justice.

Time-restricted eating (TRE) has emerged as a dietary strategy that restricts food consumption to a specific time window and is commonly applied to facilitate weight loss. The benefits of TRE on adipose tissue have been evidenced in human trials and animal models; however, its impact on bone tissue remains unclear. To systematically synthesize and examine the evidence on the impact of TRE on bone health (bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and bone turnover factors), PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Web of Science databases were systematically explored from inception to 1 October 2023 searching for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed at determining the effects of TRE on bone health in adults (≥18 years). The Cochrane Handbook and the PRISMA recommendations were followed. A total of seven RCTs involving 313 participants (19 to 68 years) were included, with an average length of 10.5 weeks (range: 4 to 24 weeks). Despite the significant weight loss reported in five out of seven studies when compared to the control, our meta-analysis showed no significant difference in BMD (g/cm2) between groups (MD = -0.009, 95% CI: -0.026 to 0.009, p = 0.328; I2 = 0%). BMC and bone turnover markers between TRE interventions and control conditions were not meta-analyzed because of scarcity of studies (less than five). Despite its short-term benefits on cardiometabolic health, TRE did not show detrimental effects on bone health outcomes compared to those in the control group. Nevertheless, caution should be taken when interpreting our results due to the scarcity of RCTs adequately powered to assess changes in bone outcomes.

PURPOSE: Our objective was to synthesize and determine whether there are sex differences in physical function following exercise interventions in older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in four databases from inception to July 8th, 2023 searching for prospective trials that conducted exercise interventions in older adults and results for physical function were reported by sex. Pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a randomeffects method. The Sidik-Jonkman estimator was used to calculate the variance of heterogeneity (I²). RESULTS: A total of 19 studies involving 20,133 older adults (mean age ≥60 years, 33.7% female) were included. After exercise interventions, males reported significantly greater pre-post changes compared to females for upper body strength (SMD=-0.40, 95% CI: -0.71 to -0.09; I²=75.6%; n=8), lower body strength (SMD=-0.32, 95% CI: -0.55 to -0.10; I²=52.0%; n=11), and cardiorespiratory fitness (SMD=-0.29, 95% CI: -0.48 to -0.10; I²=89.1%; n=12). Conversely, the pooled SMDs showed a significant effect favoring females for motor fitness (SMD=0.21, 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.39; I²=0%; n=7). Limited and inconsistent results were observed for flexibility. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests the existence of sex-related differences on physical function after an exercise intervention in the older population.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of the study was to assess the effects of high-reliability system by implementing a command centre (CC) on clinical outcomes in a community hospital before and during COVID-19 pandemic from the year 2016 to 2021. METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective study was conducted at an acute care community hospital. The administrative data included monthly average admissions, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, average length of stay, total ICU length of stay, and in-hospital mortality. In-hospital acquired events were recorded and defined as one of the following: cardiac arrest, cerebral infarction, respiratory arrest, or sepsis after hospital admissions. A subgroup statistical analysis of patients with in-hospital acquired events was performed. In addition, a subgroup statistical analysis was performed for the department of medicine. RESULTS: The rates of in-hospital acquired events and in-hospital mortality among all admitted patients did not change significantly throughout the years 2016 to 2021. In the subgroup of patients with in-hospital acquired events, the in-hospital mortality rate also did not change during the years of the study, despite the increase in the ICU admissions during the COVID-19 pandemic.Although the in-hospital mortality rate did not increase for all admitted patients, the in-hospital mortality rate increased in the department of medicine. CONCLUSION: Implementation of CC and centralized management systems has the potential to improve quality of care by supporting early identification and real-time management of patients at risk of harm and clinical deterioration, including COVID-19 patients.

CONTEXT: High adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) has been associated with a reduced risk of depression in prospective cohort studies, but whether MD interventions are effective among adults with depression is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to synthesize findings on the effects of MD interventions on the severity of depressive symptoms in adults with depression. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched from database inception to March 2023. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the Cochrane recommendations were followed. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing outcomes after MD interventions with outcomes for control conditions in adults with depressive disorders or depressive symptoms. DATA EXTRACTION: Two authors extracted the data independently. The Sidik-Jonkman estimator, the I2 metric, and the prediction interval were used to estimate between-study heterogeneity. To determine the risk of bias and the certainty of evidence from RCTs, we used the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias 2 and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tools, respectively. DATA ANALYSIS: In total, 1507 participants (mean age range: 22.0 years-53.3 years) with depression were initially included in the 5 RCTs of this review. Compared with control conditions, MD interventions significantly reduced depressive symptoms among young and middle-aged adults with major depression or mild to moderate depressive symptoms (standardized mean difference: -0.53; 95% confidence interval: -0.90 to -0.16; I2 = 87.1%). The prediction interval ranged from -1.86 to 0.81. The overall risk of bias was within the range of "some concerns" to "high," while the certainty of evidence was low. CONCLUSION: MD interventions appear to have substantial potential for alleviating depressive symptoms in people experiencing major or mild depression. However, to establish robust recommendations, there remains a need for high-quality, large-scale, and long-term RCTs. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO registration no. CRD42022341895.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease is the most common cause of liver disease in our environment. The gold standard for diagnosis continues to be liver biopsy, although, since it is an invasive test, the most commonly used test for the initial diagnosis of steatosis is abdominal ultrasound. We present the results on the diagnostic utility of ultrasound for the detection of steatosis in the population of morbidly obese patients who underwent bariatric surgery from 2004 to 2019 in our centre.

AIMS: This study aims to systematically review the systematic reviews and meta-analyses examining the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols on improving cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and to characterize the main patterns of HIIT modalities using clustering statistical procedures to examine their potential differences on improving CRF. Finally, we aimed to develop a comprehensive guideline for reporting HIIT protocols. METHODS AND RESULTS: A systematic review was conducted on PubMed and Web of Science from their inception to 31 October 2022 for systematic reviews and meta-analysis aimed at assessing the effect of HIIT on CRF in the entire study population. The Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias of each review. Additionally, a principal component analysis testing the data adequacy for the factor solution through the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin procedure test was conducted. Once the number of factors was identified, in order to identify data patterns according to the main characteristics of the HIIT protocols, a two-step cluster analysis was conducted. Nineteen systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses comprising 103 studies were included. Clustering of systematic reviews and meta-analyses identified three HIIT modalities ('HIIT-normal mixed', 'HIIT-long running', and 'HIIT-short cycling') underlying the interventions across the included studies. Similar effectiveness in increasing CRF among the three HIIT modalities was observed. Subgroup analyses showed no significant differences in CRF by sex, weight status, study design, and baseline physical activity level (P > 0.05), but differences were observed by age group, and exercise intensity indicator was used in the HIIT programmes (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: All three HIIT modalities produced significant improvements of CRF, although some modalities showed greater changes for some specific age groups or intensity indicators.
In this review, including data from more than 100 individual studies, 3 patterns of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), 'HIIT-normal mixed', 'HIIT-long running', and 'HIIT-short cycling', were characterized using a cluster analysis approach. Independently of the sex, weight status, study design, and baseline physical activity level, all three proposed HIIT modalities improved cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). However, for the age group of 2044 years, the 'HIIT-long running' reported greater improvement in CRF than 'HIIT-short cycling'. Additionally, the heart rate as an intensity indicator reported higher CRF in 'HIIT-long running' compared with 'HIIT-normal mixed'. A HIIT reporting guideline is provided to address the lack of information on HIIT protocols and provide transparency among studies.

BACKGROUND: Time-restricted eating (TRE) may facilitate weight loss, but its impact on inflammation remains unclear. Chronic inflammation can detrimentally increase risk of obesity-associated comorbidities. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize and determine the effects of TRE on cytokine and adipokines (C-reactive protein [CRP], TNF alpha [TNF-α], interleukin-6 [IL-6], leptin, and adiponectin) in adults. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Web of Science were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs to determine the effects of TRE on cytokines and adipokines in adults up to 23 June, 2023. Risk of bias was assessed using risk of Bias 2 tool for RCTs and the ROBINS-I for non-RCTs. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated with the DerSimonian-Laird method through random-effect models. The PRISMA recommendations were followed. RESULTS: A total of 25 studies (13 RCTs, 12 non-RCTs) involving 936 participants were included. The pooled SMD for the effect of TRE compared with the control group on cytokines and adipokines was -0.11 (95% CI: -0.33, 0.12; I2 = 19.7%; n = 10 comparisons) for CRP; -0.25 (95% CI: -0.47, -0.03; I2 = 0%; n = 11 comparisons) for TNF-α; -0.09 (95% CI: -0.39, 0.21; I2 = 16.4%; n = 8 comparisons) for IL-6; -0.81 (95% CI: -1.37, -0.24; I2 = 65.3%; n = 5 comparisons) for leptin; and 0.07 (95% CI: -0.40, 0.54; I2 = 56.9%; n = 6 comparisons) for adiponectin. CONCLUSIONS: Time-restricted eating may be an effective approach to reduce TNF-α and leptin levels in the general adult population. This review was registered at PROSPERO as CRD42022358162.
