RESUMO

The differences between alternative approaches for quantifying the complex effect of the electronic structure of charged metal-molecule hybrids in SERS (the so-called chemical enhancement mechanism) are highlighted. The discussion is focussed on the predictions obtained by using different methodological tools for modelling the role of the electrode potential in the SERS relative intensities. Finite electric fields are used in the commented paper for this purpose, but we have found some inconsistences in the results and the method for calculating the Raman intensities is not made sufficiently clear, which prevents the assessment of the results.

RESUMO

DFT calculations predict that plasmon-like excitations in small metal clusters are able to selectively modify the relative intensities of specific SERS bands of adsorbed molecules. These electronic resonances provide new kinds of SERS selection rules which can explain the huge enhancement of mode 9a of pyridine in the spectra recorded at negative electrode potentials.

RESUMO

DFT calculations predict two different electronic structures of metal-molecule hybrids which are selected depending on the surface charge. While the metal-to-molecule CT states are very sensitive to the charge, the energies of the reverse molecule-to-metal CT processes are surprisingly not modified at all by the charge of the metal.

RESUMO

A case of partial splenic embolisation (PSE) that was performed in a girl with severe leucothrombocytopenia due to hypersplenism is described. Treatment with PSE is a safe and effective alternative to splenectomy that prevents clinical complications due to haematological disorders and improves hypersplenism before liver transplantation.

RESUMO

We present the results of a 13 year follow-up of seventeen children with myotonic dystrophy, with the aim of better understanding the progression of this disease. We want to emphasize two basic aspects; first, the detection of myotonia with the use of EMG during the first five years of life when the clinical profile is suggestive of the disease, previous reports have stated that this sign appears relatively late in the disease process, and secondly, we want to point out that more than 50% of these patients showed insulin-resistance starting from the sixth year of life. This aspect of the disease has been well described in adult patients, but is practically absent in the pediatric literature. Hyperinsulinemic subjects demonstrated an intellectual quotient significantly lower than those subjects with normal insulin levels (p < 0.01). Basal insulin levels also had a predictive value in relation to the rest of the points n the insulin curve. The changes in insulin resistance are discussed in relation to cellular membrane changes present in myotonic dystrophy.
