RESUMO

In recent years, it has been discovered that the expression of long non-coding RNAs is highly deregulated in several types of cancer and contributes to its progression and development. Recently, it has been described that in tumors of the digestive system, such as colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and gastric cancer, DNA damage-activated lncRNA (NORAD) was frequently up-regulated. The purpose of this review is to elucidate the functions of NORAD in tumors of the digestive system, emphasizing its involvement in important cellular processes such as invasion, metastasis, proliferation, and apoptosis. NORAD acts as a ceRNA (competitive endogenous RNA) that sponges microRNAs and regulates the expression of target genes involved in tumorigenesis. Thus, the mechanisms underlying the effects of NORAD are complex and involve multiple signaling pathways. This review consolidates current knowledge on the role of NORAD in digestive cancers and highlights the need for further research to explore its potential as a therapeutic target. Understanding the intricate functions of NORAD could elucidate the way for innovative approaches to cancer treatment.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la influencia del bienestar espiritual en la gratitud, el perdón y la resiliencia en estudiantes universitarios de la ciudad de Lima. Se utilizó un diseño explicativo con variables latentes. La muestra estuvo conformada por 957 estudiantes universitarios (29.5 % varones y 70.5 % mujeres, de 13 universidades (públicas 22.36 % y privadas 77.64 %) de Lima Metropolitana. Se utilizaron la Escala de Bienestar Espiritual (SWBS), la Escala de Disposición al Perdón (TFS), la Escala de Gratitud (EG) y la Escala Breve de Resiliencia (EBR). Entre los hallazgos se encontró que el modelo estimado con el método DWLS permite señalar que el bienestar espiritual tiene efectos directos sobre el perdón, la gratitud y la resiliencia. A su vez, la covarianza entre perdón y gratitud fue .090 (p > .05), entre perdón y resiliencia de .236 (p < .01), y entre gratitud y resiliencia fue igual a .122 (p < .01). Se discuten las implicancias de los resultados.


O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a influência do bem-estar espiritual na gratidão, perdão e resiliência em estudantes universitários da cidade de Lima. Foi utilizado um desenho explicativo com variáveis latentes. A amostra foi composta por 957 estudantes universitários (29,5 % homens e 70,5 % mulheres) de 13 universidades (22,36 % públicas e 77,64 % privadas) de Lima Metropolitana. Foram utilizadas a Escala de Bem-Estar Espiritual (SWBS), a Escala de Disposição ao Perdão (TFS), a Escala de Gratidão (EG) e a Escala Breve de Resiliência (EBR). Entre os achados, encontrou-se que o modelo estimado com o método DWLS permite indicar que o bem-estar espiritual tem efeitos diretos sobre o perdão, gratidão e resiliência. This study aimed to determine the influence of spiritual well-being on gratitude, forgiveness, and resilience in university students in the city of Lima. An explanatory design with latent variables was used. The sample consisted of 957 university students (29.5 % men and 70.5 % women from 13 universities (22.36% public and 77.64 % private)), from Metropolitan Lima. The Spiritual Wellbeing Scale (SWBS), the Trait Forgivingness Scale (TFS), the Gratitude Scale (GS), and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) were used. Among the findings, it was found that the model estimated with the DWLS method allows us to point out that spiritual well-being directly affects forgiveness, gratitude, and resilience. In turn, the covariance between forgiveness and gratitude was .090 (p > .05), the covariance between forgiveness and resilience was .236 (p < .01), and the covariance between gratitude and resilience was equal to .122 (p < .01). The implications of the results have been discussed.

BACKGROUND: Although considerable research has been conducted on post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), cognitive symptoms, particularly those related to language, are still not well understood. AIMS: To provide a detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of language performance in PCS patients using a comprehensive set of semantic and verbal production tasks. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The study involved 195 PCS patients aged 26-64 years and 50 healthy controls aged 25-61 years. Participants were assessed using two semantic tasks, three naming tasks and four types of verbal fluency tasks, designed to evaluate different aspects of language processing. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: PCS patients demonstrated significantly poorer performance compared with controls across all verbal fluency tasks. This was evident in both the total number of words generated and their types, with patients tending to choose more easily accessible words. In naming tasks, the pattern of errors was similar in both groups, although patients showed a higher number of non-responses and made more errors, reflecting difficulties in word retrieval. The analysis highlighted the impact of factors such as stimulus availability, educational level and cognitive reserve on performance. Notably, younger patients performed worse than older, a paradoxical trend also observed in previous research. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: These findings reveal significant word retrieval difficulties in PCS patients, suggesting that cognitive impairment related to language may be more pronounced than previously understood. The results underscore the need for a thorough evaluation of language functions in PCS patients and the development of more targeted and individualized language rehabilitation strategies to address these specific challenges. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Studies on the cognitive characteristics of CPS have focused mainly on broad-spectrum neuropsychological assessments covering all cognitive functions. However, there are very few studies analysing oral production with specific lexical and semantic system tasks. Furthermore, no work has specifically included tasks assessing semantic processing or conducted qualitative analyses of the psycholinguistic variables affecting performance. Such analyses could undoubtedly help clarify the nature of the language impairments in patients with PCS. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge This study explores in depth the evaluation and analysis of the oral production of patients with PCS using several lexical and semantic tasks. In addition, psycholinguistic variables are analysed that could undoubtedly help clarify the nature of the language impairments in patients with PCS. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The study allows the identification of specific lexical-semantic deficits in the spoken language in patients with this PCS. A more detailed assessment of the oral language of these patients, keeping in mind the psycholinguistic variables that may affect the performance, will facilitate the design of more efficient and individualized rehabilitation programmes.

Measuring pre-diagnostic blood metabolites may help identify novel risk factors for prostate cancer. Using data from 4387 matched case-control pairs from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, we investigated the associations of 148 individual metabolites and three previously defined metabolite patterns with prostate cancer risk. Metabolites were measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Multivariable-adjusted conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio per standard deviation increase in log metabolite concentration and metabolite patterns (OR1SD) for prostate cancer overall, and for advanced, high-grade, aggressive. We corrected for multiple testing using the Benjamini-Hochberg method. Overall, there were no associations between specific metabolites or metabolite patterns and overall, aggressive, or high-grade prostate cancer that passed the multiple testing threshold (padj <0.05). Six phosphatidylcholines (PCs) were inversely associated with advanced prostate cancer diagnosed at or within 10 years of blood collection. metabolite patterns 1 (64 PCs and three hydroxysphingomyelins) and 2 (two acylcarnitines, glutamate, ornithine, and taurine) were also inversely associated with advanced prostate cancer; when stratified by follow-up time, these associations were observed for diagnoses at or within 10 years of recruitment (OR1SD 0.80, 95% CI 0.66-0.96 and 0.76, 0.59-0.97, respectively) but were weaker after longer follow-up (0.95, 0.82-1.10 and 0.85, 0.67-1.06). Pattern 3 (8 lyso PCs) was associated with prostate cancer death (0.82, 0.68-0.98). Our results suggest that the plasma metabolite profile changes in response to the presence of prostate cancer up to a decade before detection of advanced-stage disease.

The genetic basis of severe COVID-19 has been thoroughly studied, and many genetic risk factors shared between populations have been identified. However, reduced sample sizes from non-European groups have limited the discovery of population-specific common risk loci. In this second study nested in the SCOURGE consortium, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for COVID-19 hospitalization in admixed Americans, comprising a total of 4702 hospitalized cases recruited by SCOURGE and seven other participating studies in the COVID-19 Host Genetic Initiative. We identified four genome-wide significant associations, two of which constitute novel loci and were first discovered in Latin American populations (BAZ2B and DDIAS). A trans-ethnic meta-analysis revealed another novel cross-population risk locus in CREBBP. Finally, we assessed the performance of a cross-ancestry polygenic risk score in the SCOURGE admixed American cohort. This study constitutes the largest GWAS for COVID-19 hospitalization in admixed Latin Americans conducted to date. This allowed to reveal novel risk loci and emphasize the need of considering the diversity of populations in genomic research.

This research presents a novel electrochemical approach for the selective measurement of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides, which is pivotal in many fields. The study details the development of an advanced sensor using a one-pot, one-step synthesis to embed platinum nanoparticles within a 3D-polymeric matrix of poly (brilliant green) on screen-printed carbon electrodes. The modified surfaces were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results obtained by amperometry showed that, at 0.1 V, only H2O2 produced an electrochemical signal, while, at higher potential (0.5 V), all the hydroperoxides tested exhibited an electrochemical signal. Sensitivities obtained for H2O2 by flow injection analysis were 431 ± 3 and 465 ± 4 µC mM-1 at 0.1 and 0.5 V, respectively, with detection limits (S/N = 3) 116 and 30 nM, respectively. For organic hydroperoxides, sensitivities ranged from 22.3 to 32.6 µC mM-1 at 0.5 V, and limits of detection from 1.15 to 5.95 µM. Chemometric analysis indicated the sensor can satisfactorily measure H2O2 in the presence of the organic hydroperoxides herein analysed. The proposed sensor showed excellent properties in terms of repeatability, reproducibility and stability, with minimal interference. The reliability of the sensor was verified by measuring hydroperoxides spiked in aqueous extracts from real air quality monitoring filters. These features highlight the suitability of the sensor for hydroperoxide measurement and underscore its reliability as a practical tool for real-world applications.

The DNA of protozoan parasites is highly susceptible to damage, either induced by environmental agents or spontaneously generated during cellular metabolism through reactive oxygen species (ROS). Certain phases of the cell cycle, such as meiotic recombination, and external factors like ionizing radiation (IR), ultraviolet light (UV), or chemical genotoxic agents further increase this susceptibility. Among the various types of DNA damage, double-stranded breaks (DSBs) are the most critical, as they are challenging to repair and can result in genetic instability or cell death. DSBs caused by environmental stressors are primarily repaired via one of two major pathways: non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) or homologous recombination (HR). In multicellular eukaryotes, NHEJ predominates, but in unicellular eukaryotes such as protozoan parasites, HR seems to be the principal mechanism for DSB repair. The HR pathway is orchestrated by proteins from the RAD52 epistasis group, including RAD51, RAD52, RAD54, RAD55, and the MRN complex. This review focuses on elucidating the diverse roles and significance of RAD51 recombinase and its paralogs in protozoan parasites, such as Acanthamoeba castellanii, Entamoeba histolytica (Amoebozoa), apicomplexan parasites (Chromalveolata), Naegleria fowleri, Giardia spp., Trichomonas vaginalis, and trypanosomatids (Excavata), where they primarily function in HR. Additionally, we analyze the diversity of proteins involved in HR, both upstream and downstream of RAD51, and discuss the implications of these processes in parasitic protozoa.

CONTEXT: Experimental and observational studies suggest that circulating micronutrients, including vitamin D (VD), may increase COVID-19 risk and its associated outcomes. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies provide valuable insight into the causal relationship between an exposure and disease outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of causal inference studies that apply MR approaches to assess the role of these micronutrients, particularly VD, in COVID-19 risk, infection severity, and related inflammatory markers. DATA SOURCES: Searches (up to July 2023) were conducted in 4 databases. DATA EXTRACTION AND ANALYSIS: The quality of the studies was evaluated based on the MR-STROBE guidelines. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted where possible. RESULTS: There were 28 studies (2 overlapped) including 12 on micronutrients (8 on VD) and COVID-19, 4 on micronutrients (all on VD) and inflammation, and 12 on inflammatory markers and COVID-19. Some of these studies reported significant causal associations between VD or other micronutrients (vitamin C, vitamin B6, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, and magnesium) and COVID-19 outcomes. Associations in terms of causality were also nonsignificant with regard to inflammation-related markers, except for VD levels below 25 nmol/L and C-reactive protein (CRP). Some studies reported causal associations between cytokines, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and other inflammatory markers and COVID-19. Pooled MR estimates showed that VD was not significantly associated with COVID-19 outcomes, whereas ACE2 increased COVID-19 risk (MR odds ratio = 1.10; 95% CI: 1.01-1.19) but did not affect hospitalization or severity of the disease. The methodological quality of the studies was high in 13 studies, despite the majority (n = 24) utilizing 2-sample MR and evaluated pleiotropy. CONCLUSION: MR studies exhibited diversity in their approaches but do not support a causal link between VD/micronutrients and COVID-19 outcomes. Whether inflammation mediates the VD-COVID-19 relationship remains uncertain, and highlights the need to address this aspect in future MR studies exploring micronutrient associations with COVID-19 outcomes. Patient safety is fundamental to healthcare. Adverse events, particularly medication errors, cause harm to patients, especially the paediatric population in the emergency department. AIM: To explore paediatric emergency nurses' perceptions of medication administration errors. METHOD: A qualitative, ethnomethodological, descriptive study. The participants were nurses working in the paediatric emergency department. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews with paediatric emergency nurses. The study excluded nurses employed for less than six months. Ten individual interviews were carried out. All interviews were face-to-face and audio-recorded with the participant's consent. Interviews took between 52 min and 1 h 25 min. A questions guide was followed during the interviews. The analysis of the data was carried out according to the scheme proposed by Taylor and Bogdan. RESULTS: The participants' discourse revealed three main categories: Safety culture, transmitted by supervisors and safety groups. Teamwork, with good communication and a positive relationship. Error management, the lack of formal support and negative feelings despite an understanding of the multifactorial nature of errors. The study identifies several challenges in the healthcare system. Emphasis was placed on the perception of errors in terms of patient harm, while near misses or dose delays or omissions are not treated as errors. CONCLUSIONS: Although institutions have implemented safety culture strategies, nurses have not fully embraced them. There is a need to promote a positive safety culture and a safe working environment that encourages communication within the team. The hospital should provide training in safe management and patient safety and develop effective protocols. This study was not registered.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where it poses a significant burden. In Latin America, the estimated prevalence of COPD is notably high, but the management and treatment of the disease have progressed slowly. This review examines the current status of inhalation therapy for COPD in Latin America, focusing on pharmacological therapies, inhalation devices, and the potential of advanced drug delivery systems. Pharmacological management predominantly relies on inhaled bronchodilators and corticosteroids, though access to these therapies varies considerably across the region. Inhalation devices, such as metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) and dry powder inhalers (DPIs), play a critical role in effective treatment delivery. However, their usage is often compromised by incorrect technique, low adherence, and limited availability, especially for DPIs. Emerging technologies, including nanoformulations, represent a promising frontier for the treatment of COPD by improving drug delivery and reducing side effects. However, significant barriers, such as high development costs and inadequate infrastructure, hinder their widespread adoption in the region. This review highlights the need for a multifaceted approach to enhance COPD management in Latin America, including optimizing access to existing inhalation therapies, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, improving provider training, and engaging patients in treatment decisions. Overcoming these challenges is crucial to improving COPD outcomes across the region.

The balance between cell growth, proliferation and differentiation emerges from gene regulatory networks coupled to various signal transduction pathways, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and transcription factors (TFs), enabling developmental responses to environmental cues. The Arabidopsis thaliana's primary root has become a valuable system for unraveling such networks. Recently, the role of TFs that mediate the ROS's inhibition of primary root growth has begun to be characterized. This study demonstrates that the MADS-box transcription factor XAANTAL1 (XAL1) is an essential regulator of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in primary root growth and root stem cell niche identity. Interestingly, our findings suggest that XAL1 acts as a positive regulator of H2O2 concentration in the root meristem by directly regulating genes involved in oxidative stress response, such as PEROXIDASE 28 (PER28). Moreover, we found that XAL1 is necessary for the H2O2-induced inhibition of primary root growth through the negative regulation of peroxidase and catalase activities. Furthermore, XAL1, in conjunction with RETINOBLASTOMA-RELATED (RBR), is essential for positively regulating the differentiation of columella stem cells and for participating in primary root growth inhibition in response to oxidative stress induced by H2O2 treatment.

Recent epidemiological studies have suggested a positive association between ultra-processed food consumption and breast cancer risk, although some studies also reported no association. Furthermore, the evidence regarding the associations between intake of food with lower degrees of processing and breast cancer risk is limited. Thus, we investigated the associations between dietary intake by degree of food processing and breast cancer risk, overall and by breast cancer subtypes in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Dietary intake of EPIC participants was assessed via questionnaires at baseline. More than 11,000 food ingredients were classified into four groups of food processing levels using the NOVA classification system: unprocessed/minimally processed (NOVA 1), culinary ingredients (NOVA 2), processed (NOVA 3) and ultra-processed (NOVA 4). Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of breast cancer per standard deviation increase in daily consumption (grams) of foods from each NOVA group. The current analysis included 14,933 breast cancer cases, diagnosed among the 318,686 EPIC female participants, (median follow-up of 14.9 years). No associations were found between breast cancer risk and the level of dietary intake from NOVA 1 [HR per 1 SD=0.99 (95% CI 0.97 - 1.01)], NOVA 2 [HR per 1 SD =1.01 (95% CI 0.98 - 1.03)] and NOVA 4 [HR per 1 SD =1.01 (95% CI 0.99 - 1.03)] foods. However, a positive association was found between NOVA 3 and breast cancer risk [HR per 1 SD =1.05 (95% CI 1.03 - 1.07)] which became non-significant after adjustment for alcohol intake [HR per 1 SD =1.01 (95% CI 0.98 - 1.05)] or when beer and wine were excluded from this group [HR per 1 SD =0.99 (95% CI 0.97 - 1.01)]. The associations did not differ by breast cancer subtype, menopausal status or body mass index. Findings from this large-scale prospective study suggest that the positive association between processed food intake and breast cancer risk was likely driven by alcoholic beverage consumption. Chronic inflammatory diseases pose a substantial health challenge globally, significantly contributing to morbidity and mortality. Addressing this issue requires the use of effective anti-inflammatory strategies with fewer side effects than those provoked by currently used drugs. In this study, a range of phytochemicals (phenolic di-caffeoylquinic acid (Di-CQA), flavonoid cyanidin-3,5-diglucoside (Cy3,5DiG), aromatic isothiocyanate sinalbin (SNB) and aliphatic isothiocyanate sulforaphane (SFN)) sourced from vegetables and fruits underwent assessment for their potential anti-inflammatory activity. An in vitro model of human macrophage-like cells treated with a low dose of LPS to obtain a low degree of inflammation that emulates a chronic inflammation scenario revealed promising results. Cell viability and production of the key pro-inflammatory cytokines were assessed in the presence of various phytochemicals. The compounds Di-CQA and Cy-3,5-DiG, within low physiologically relevant doses, demonstrated notable anti-inflammatory effects by significantly reducing the production of key pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 without affecting cell viability. These findings underscore the potential of plant-derived bioactive compounds as valuable contributors to the prevention or treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases. These results suggest that these compounds, whether used individually or as part of natural mixtures, hold promise for their inclusion in nutritional interventions designed to mitigate inflammation in associated pathologies.

BACKGROUND: Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) promotes wound sterilization, improves tissue granulation, and ensures appropriate wound healing. Its potential in contaminated abdominal procedures is still under study, but the results are promising. PURPOSE: This research provides insight into the use of NPWT for the effective preparation of laparotomy wounds in close proximity to ostomies. It also demonstrates the application of NPWT systems for successful skin graft take under these conditions. METHODS: The authors describe 3 cases in the burn unit of an academic hospital in the northeastern United States treated successfully with a combination of NPWT and skin grafting to manage open abdominal laparotomy wounds in close proximity to ostomies. RESULTS: NPWT improved skin graft survival by promoting the creation of a clean base, which is important for ensuring appropriate skin graft take, and strengthening the bond between the graft and the recipient wound bed. CONCLUSION: Despite these successful results, evidence in this area is still mixed and would benefit from further studies in the field.

OBJECTIVES: This study assesses the effectiveness of nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody, in preventing medically attended respiratory syncytial virus-lower respiratory tract infections (RSV-LRTI) in a large primary care network in Spain, in both overall and catch-up infants under ten months of age. METHODS: The 2023-24 immunization campaign with nirsevimab in Spain targeted all infants born after April 1st, 2023. Those born after October 1st received it at birth in hospitals, while others received it through a catch-up program. The MEDIPRIM network of primary care centers recruited all infants with LRTI for RSV PCR testing and employed a test-negative design (TND) approach to estimate the effectiveness of nirsevimab. RESULTS: The study included 160 infants, 141 (88%) of them received nirsevimab and 128 belonged to the catch-up group (88% received nirsevimab). Overall, RSV was detected in 44 infants (27.5%). Within the catch-up group, 37 (28.9%) were positive for RSV. The overall effectiveness was 75.8% (95% CI: 40.4-92.7), and 80.2% (95% CI: 44.3-95.4) in infants belonging to the catch-up group. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the effectiveness of nirsevimab in preventing medically attended LRTI in infants in outpatient settings and emphasizes the importance of a catch-up immunization program to reduce the disease burden in primary care.

There is a pressing need to develop new technologies that continuously eliminates harmful pollutants and pathogens in occupied indoor spaces without compromising safety. This study was undertaken to test the safety of a novel air cleaning and disinfection technology called Advanced Photohydrolysis. Advanced Photohydrolysis generates a complex mixture of ions and molecules that are released into the air and has been shown to reduce airborne and surface pathogens. Mice (6-8-week-old) were exposed to therapeutic levels of Advanced Photohydrolysis for 90-days. During the study, the Advanced-Photohydrolysis-exposed and control mice were monitored for food consumption, body weight gain, and any overt adverse effects. In addition, at the conclusion of the study, the blood chemistry and hematology values of both groups were determined. Finally, the tissues of the conduction and respiratory portions of the airways of mice from both groups were examined for any pathological changes. The mice of both groups were found to be normal and healthy throughout the 90-day study; there were no differences in the behavior, food consumption and weight gain. Analysis of clinical chemistry values found no differences in hepatocellular function or other markers of cellular and organ function, and clinical hematology values were also unremarkable. Finally, and importantly, histopathology of the upper and lower airway tissues showed no deleterious effects. These results are the first to demonstrate directly the safety of Advanced Photohydrolysis on live mammals and encourage additional studies.

Penile inversion vaginoplasty (PIV) is the most common surgical technique used in "gender-affirming bottom surgery." During this process, penile tissue is used to create a functional neo-vagina, allowing the individual to experience a more aligned physical manifestation of their "gender" identity. In this technical note, we describe the steps and nuances used by the senior author to ensure reliable aesthetic and functional outcomes, contributing to the overall well-being and satisfaction of transgender patients.

Airborne microorganisms impact cloud formation and are involved in disease spreading. The ability of airborne cells to survive and express genes may be limited by reduced water availability in the atmosphere and depend on the ability of the cells to attract water vapor at subsaturated conditions, i.e., their hygroscopicity. We assessed hygroscopic properties of the plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae, known to participate in cloud formation. We used a hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer to examine both hydration and dehydration behavior in the relative humidity (RH) range 5-90%. The cells were aerosolized either from Milli-Q water or from a 35 g L-1 NaCl solution, resulting in pure cells or cells associated with NaCl. Pure cells exhibited no deliquescence/efflorescence and a small gradual water uptake reaching a maximum growth factor (GF) of 1.09 ± 0.01 at 90% RH. For cells associated with NaCl, we observed deliquescence and a much larger maximum GF of 1.74 ± 0.03 at 90% RH. Deliquescence RH was comparable to that of pure NaCl, highlighting the major role of the salt associated with the cells. It remains to be investigated how the observed hygroscopic properties relate to survival, metabolic, and ice-nucleation activities of airborne P. syringae.

Humans have used Quercus ilex acorns as a staple food since ancient times. Recently, their nutritional and nutraceutical value has revived interest for human consumption. Ensuring their safety as food requires assessing their allergenic potential. In this work, we predicted the allergenic profile of acorns by in silico analysis of the Q. ilex genome and transcriptome. In addition, immunoblot analysis of pooled sera from patients allergic to various dry fruits was performed, with immunoreactive bands subjected to mass spectrometry analysis. The most remarkable allergens identified belong to the Bet v 1, profilin, prolamin, Hsp70 and cyclophilin families. Acorns from different mother trees exhibited also different IgE sensitization patterns. Thus, acorns from trees showing damage symptoms, and located in declined areas, had higher allergen contents than those from healthy ones, which corresponded to higher abundance of stress-related proteins.
