RESUMO
We present a case of delayed diagnosis of retained glass foreign body in the inguinal region of a child using ultrasonography following penetrating trauma to the upper thigh. The foreign body had traversed significantly by the time of diagnosis, from the medial upper thigh to the inguinal region at the level of the inguinal ligament. Ultrasound can be an effective initial imaging modality for the diagnosis of foreign bodies in children, allowing the potential to reduce ionizing radiation exposure.

Osteomyelitis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children and adults. Imaging plays a crucial role in establishing a timely diagnosis and guiding early management, with the aim of reducing long-term complications. Recognition of the imaging features of osteomyelitis requires a good understanding of its pathogenesis. In this review, the key imaging findings in osteomyelitis are correlated with the underlying pathological processes. There is a particular emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is the best available imaging modality owing to its high sensitivity for detecting early osteomyelitis, excellent anatomical detail and superior soft tissue resolution. However, other modalities such as nuclear medicine and computed tomography (CT) are also useful in many clinical contexts, and will also be described in this review.

Pulmonary lacerations are an uncommon injury typically associated with high-impact trauma. Most cases occur as a result of high-speed road traffic collisions. Although chest wall and pleural injuries are commonly associated with sports-related thoracic trauma, pulmonary injuries are far less common. There are only a few reported cases of significant pulmonary trauma associated with sports injuries, the majority of which have described pulmonary contusions occurring as a result of thoracic injury sustained while playing high-impact contact sports such as American football. Pulmonary laceration occurring as result of soccer-related thoracic trauma has never previously been reported.
