RESUMO

Pollution by toxic heavy metals creates a significant impact on the biotic community of the ecosystem. Nowadays, a solution to this problem is an eco-friendly approach like phytoremediation, in which plants are used to ameliorate heavy metals. In addition, various amendments are used to enhance the potential of heavy metal phytoremediation. Symbiotic microorganisms such as phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), endophytes, mycorrhiza and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) play a significant role in the improvement of heavy metal phytoremediation potential along with promoting the growth of plants that are grown in contaminated environments. Various chemical chelators (Indole 3-acetic acid, ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, ethylene glycol tetra acetic acid, ethylenediamine-N, N-disuccinic acid and nitrilotri-acetic acid) and their combined action with other agents also contribute to heavy metal phytoremediation enhancement. With modern techniques, transgenic plants and microorganisms are developed to open up an alternative strategy for phytoremediation. Genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics are widely used novel approaches to develop competent phytoremediators. This review accounts for the synergistic interactions of the ameliorating agent's role in enhancing heavy metal phytoremediation, intending to highlight the importance of these various approaches in reducing heavy metal pollution.

PURPOSE: To compare the effect of povidone-iodine (PI) 5% and moxifloxacin 0.5% solutions versus PI 5% solution alone on the conjunctival bacterial flora. METHODOLOGY: This is a comparative study in which the study population comprised adult patients scheduled for elective small incision cataract surgery. The eye to be operated (control eye) received topical moxifloxacin 0.5% drops 4 times, 1 day before surgery and 2 applications on the day of surgery. As placebo, the contralateral eye (study eye) received saline 0.90% drops as per the same schedule. Before surgery, on table, PI 5% was instilled in the conjunctival sac in both eyes. Conjunctival swabs were taken before initiation of therapy and 3 min after instillation of PI. RESULTS: Of the 96 pairs of eyes included in the study, conjunctival cultures before prophylaxis were similar between the two groups (p = 0.31), with 54 samples (56%) of the study group and 49 (51%) of the control group showing growth. With positive cultures reducing to 7 (14%) in the study group and 8 (16%) in the control group, both the prophylaxis methods appeared equally efficacious (p = 0.79). Both the groups showed a significant reduction in positive cultures following prophylaxis (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: PI 5% alone as preoperative prophylaxis was as effective as its combination therapy with moxifloxacin 0.5% in the reduction in conjunctival bacterial colonization.

AIMS: Although diabetes management decisions in primary care are typically based largely on HbA1c, mismatches between HbA1c and other measures of glycemia that are increasingly more available present challenges to optimal management. This study aimed to assess a systematic approach to identify the frequency of mismatches of potential clinical significance amongst various measures of glycemia in a primary care setting. METHODS: Following screening to exclude conditions known to affect HbA1c interpretation, HbA1c, and fructosamine were obtained and repeated after ∼90 days on 53 adults with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. A subset of 13 participants with repeat labs wore continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for 10 days. RESULTS: As expected, HbA1c and fructosamine only modestly correlated (initial R2 = 0.768/repeat R2 = 0.655). The HbA1c/fructosamine mismatch frequency of ± 0.5% (using the following regression HbA1c = 0.015 *fructosamine + 2.994 calculated from the initial sample) was 27.0%. Of the 13 participants with CGM data, HbA1c and CGM-based Glucose Management Indicator correlated at R2 = 0.786 with a mismatch frequency of ± 0.5% at 46.2% compared to a HbA1c/fructosamine mismatch frequency of ± 0.5% at 30.8%. CONCLUSIONS: HbA1c is frequently mismatched with fructosamine and CGM data. As each of the measures has strengths and weaknesses, the utilization of multiple different measures of glycemia may be informative for diabetes assessment in the clinical setting.

The research article investigates the effect of incorporating the guanidinium carbonate (GuC) salt into the poly vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymer matrix. Various weight percentages of GuC enriched PVP/PEO solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have been prepared by the simplest solution casting process. XRD analysis revealed that the incorporation of the GuC salt led to changes in the crystalline structure of the PVP/PEO. FTIR analysis confirms the presence of guanidinium carbonate in the blended polymeric system. FESEM imaging showed the uniform and smooth surface view of the electrolytes. DSC analysis suggests that the addition of the GuC led to a decrease in the melting temperature and an increase in the crystallisation temperature. The temperature-dependent dielectric analysis showed that the presence of the organic salt led to an increase in the dielectric constant of the polymer blend. Among all the prepared electrolytes, 25 wt.% GuC added polymer electrolyte achieved a higher conductivity of 3.00764 × 10-7 S/cm. Overall, the results of the study suggest that the incorporation of the GuC salt into the PVP/PEO can lead to significant changes in the structural, thermal, and dielectric properties of the blend. These findings have potential implications for the use of PVP/PEO blends in solid state battery applications.

The surface drying process is an important technology in the pharmaceutical, biomedical, and food industries. The final stage of formulation development (i.e., the drying process) faces several challenges, and overall mastering depends on the end step. The advent of new emerging technologies paved the way for commercialization. Thin film freezing (TFF) is a new emerging freeze-drying technique available for various treatment modalities in drug delivery. TFF has now been used for the commercialization of pharmaceuticals, food, and biopharmaceutical products. The present review highlights the fundamentals of TFF along with modulated techniques used for drying pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals. Furthermore, we have covered various therapeutic applications of TFF technology in the development of nanoformulations, dry powder for inhalations and vaccines. TFF holds promise in delivering therapeutics for lung diseases such as fungal infection, bacterial infection, lung dysfunction, and pneumonia.

Background: Artificial intelligence-based imaging is a low-cost, radiation-free solution for the breast imaging process that uses infrared radiation emitted by the body. This is a novel procedure that, when feasible, could be a better solution, particularly in underprivileged communities having low access to breast health care. Aims: To assess the acceptance and explore challenges for an artificial intelligence-based screening solution for breast health among the urban slum population. Settings and Design: A mixed-method study was conducted in urban slums of central Karnataka, India. Material and Methods: The study was carried out for a period of two years in 2019-21 among women in the reproductive age group in urban slums of central Karnataka to understand the acceptance of an artificial intelligence-based imaging solution for screening breast health. In-depth interviews were conducted to identify the strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges (SWOC) screening for breast health. Statistical Analysis Used: Quantitative data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v16.0, and for qualitative data, manual descriptive content analysis was carried out, and the sub-themes were generated. Results: A total of 768 women accessed the thermalytix ® breast imaging services, the majority of them in the age group 31-40 years (35%), belonging to the Muslim religion (68.5%) with a mean monthly family income of Rs. 11,950.67/- SWOC analysis identified reduced cost for the screening services and involvement of female self-help groups (SHGs) as strengths. Weaknesses included poor breast health awareness among women and the stigma associated with breast cancer. Conclusions: Artificial intelligence-based screening is a feasible solution for breast health in low-income, low health access areas like urban slums. Engagement of the local community and active involvement of the health system is of paramount importance for the sustainability of any novel strategy.

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is an uncommon cause of hypercalcemia in HIV-infected patients recently started on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). It is hypothesized that increased granulomatous formation due to IRIS leads to an overproduction of calcitriol. High levels of calcitriol, then, can lead to significant hypercalcemia. We present the case of a 63-year-old male with HIV off HAART presented to the emergency room for confusion, frequent falls, and cough. His CD-4 count was noted to be below 35 cells/µL (255-2,496). Over the course of the hospitalization, the patient was found to have disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection and was initiated on HAART. Initiation of HAART was followed by an increase in calcium up to 14.1 mg/dL. The hypercalcemia did not respond to either Calcitonin or Pamidronate. Consideration was then given to IRIS in the setting of MAC infection leading to increased granulomatous formation. Calcium levels normalized within three days of therapy after initiation of prednisone for the treatment of IRIS.  It is thought that an increase in CD-4 counts leads to the recovery of an immune response. This can lead to granulomatous inflammation. An increase in granuloma formation can cause hypercalcemia due to overproduction of calcitriol via increased 1𝛼-hydroxylase activity from macrophages. Our case report describes IRIS-mediated hypercalcemia in an HIV-infected individual with MAC infection. This unusual cause of severe hypercalcemia should be considered in differential diagnoses for immunocompromised patients in the appropriate setting. Prompt treatment of IRIS with glucocorticoids can lead to the resolution of hypercalcemia.

Background: A paediatric information leaflet was produced to better prepare patients for time spent in hospital and to improve experience by informing them what to expect. Methods: The 'Coming to Hospital' leaflet was designed with input from paediatric research groups, and in collaboration with a children's author and publishing company. A questionnaire to evaluate the leaflet was developed; face validity was established in a pilot. The real-time patient experience of these leaflets was evaluated on paediatric wards in a university hospital. Results: The evaluation revealed that a significant majority of children 'really liked' the leaflet and found it helpful. 53 out of 72 of children reported that the leaflet made them feel 'happy' or 'calm', with no children responding that it made them feel 'very worried'. The leaflet was found to be informative, well presented and reassuring. Many parents stated that they wished they had received the leaflet prior to their child's first hospital visit. Suggestions for changes to the leaflet were minimal; it was considered to include all relevant information. Conclusion: A leaflet designed by clinical staff, patients and a publishing company was welcomed by paediatric patients and their parents. Patients reported it made them feel calmer. Such a leaflet should be available widely to improve children's experience of coming to hospital. Collaborations between clinicians, academics and publishing companies can produce positive results for the paediatric population.

Objectives: In order to provide a broad overview of the body of peer-reviewed literature on self-compassion and close relationships, this scoping review describes how self-compassion relates to thoughts, feelings and behaviors within the context of current personal relationships between family members, romantic partners, friends, or others referred to as "close". Methods: Two reviewers independently screened peer-reviewed articles retrieved based on a defined search strategy within three online databases, extracted data from 72 articles that met inclusion criteria by consensus, and summarized findings thematically. Results: With few exceptions, self-compassion is positively associated with secure attachment, adaptive parenting behaviors, healthy family, romantic and friendship functioning, and constructive conflict and transgression repair behavior. In families, evidence suggests parent self-compassion is linked to supportive parenting behavior, which is in turn linked to higher levels of child self-compassion. Conclusions: Self-compassion is associated with a wide variety of close interpersonal relationship benefits. These associations may be complex and bidirectional, such that positive social relationships promote self-compassion, while self-compassion promotes relational and emotional well-being. For a deeper understanding of these nuances and to establish causality, future research should include heterogeneous samples, longitudinal designs, observational and multi-informant methodologies, and consider attachment style and personality trait covariates. The potential implications for interventional research are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple implantations of the implant healing abutment (IHA) could adversely impact its surface properties in vivo. Furthermore, the effect of sterilization and reuse of the IHA on soft tissue viability and bacterial contamination has not been extensively studied. The goal of this study was to perform an in vitro analysis of mammalian cell viability and bacterial adhesion on the surfaces of retrieved IHA after single and multiple implantations and repetitive cycles of sterilization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: IHA surface morphology was studied using optical microscopy. Cell viability of gingival fibroblasts (HGF-1) and oral keratinocytes (HOKg) in indirect contact with IHAs was assessed for 3 and 7 days. Immersion in bacterial culture was performed with a polyculture of Streptococcus species for 3 days and Streptococcus species with Fusobacterium nucleatum for 7 days. RESULTS: IHAs exhibited signs of surface damage even after a single exposure to the oral cavity. Fibroblasts did not show a significant preference towards control IHAs over used IHAs, whereas keratinocytes exhibited a significant decrease in viability when exposed to IHAs after multiple implantation cycles as compared with controls. Adherent bacterial count increased with increasing number of IHA implantations for both polycultures. CONCLUSIONS: Reusing of IHAs in vivo promoted surface degradation in addition to adversely impacting host cell viability and oral bacterial attachment in vitro. These findings show IHA reuse might potentially affect its clinical performance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Careful consideration should be taken when reusing IHAs in patients because this practice can result in permanent surface changes that might affect soft tissue integration during the healing period and promote bacterial colonization.

OBJECTIVE: Very few studies have investigated dental implant components involved in the early stage of healing, especially the implant healing abutment (IHA), despite its vital role in soft tissue contouring and shaping after implant placement. Although these components are labelled by the manufacturer for "single-use only," it is a common clinical practice to clean, sterilize, and reuse them. METHODS: In the present study, IHAs after single and multiple implantations were retrieved as per standard procedures, and biological material isolated from the surface was subjected to 16S rRNA sequence analysis. The microbiome analysis was followed by cleaning and sterilization in order to replicate clinical sterilization techniques. Following sterilization, retrievals were subjected to surface characterization with optical and scanning electron microscopy to investigate surface features, and electrochemical testing was performed to evaluate corrosion behavior. RESULTS: The microbiota was comprised of early colonizers including Streptococcus species and secondary anaerobic colonizers such as Fusobacterium, Capnocytophaga, and Prevotella species. The surface analysis revealed that irrespective of the cleaning and sterilization techniques, the pristine, homogeneous surface of the new, unused IHAs could not be restored. Both single and multiple-use IHAs had severe surface changes including discoloration, major abrasions, biological contamination, and the IHA retrievals exhibited higher corrosion rate as compared to control specimens. SIGNIFICANCE: Reusing IHAs multiple times may not be a prudent practice as the microbial colonization and surface changes caused by using this component multiple times may affect the performance of IHAs in soft tissue healing.

RESUMO

The prevalence of oncogenic rat sarcoma virus (RAS) mutations has made RAS a popular target for cancer therapies. Significant discoveries have been reported regarding cancer molecular biology following the study of RAS mutations. These discoveries are integral in shaping the era of targeted cancer therapy, with direct targeting of RAS or downstream RAS effectors, such as Grb2 and MAPK a possibility. Novel agents such as farnesyltransferase directly bind and sequester RAS. While these new agents and approaches have shown promise in preclinical and clinical studies, the complexity of RAS signaling and the potential for robust adaptive feedback continue to present substantial challenges. Therefore, the development of targeted therapies will require a detailed understanding of the properties and dependencies of specific cancers to a RAS mutation. This review provides an overview of RAS mutations and their relationship with cancer and discusses their potential as therapeutic targets.

The medium temperature pyrolysis process using a fixed-bed reactor at atmospheric pressure was utilised to recover carbon black from motorcycle and automobile tyres. Experimental results have shown that the ash and volatile contents of several recovered carbon blacks are high, the elongation at break of the vulcanised natural rubber filled with recovered carbon blacks from motorcycle tyres is better than that from motorcycle tyres and standard carbon black 7#, while the other mechanical properties are worse. In order to improve the reinforcing effect of recovered carbon blacks, the modification of recovered carbon black was performed by high-energy electron bombardment and non-oxidising acid. The specific surface area of the pyrolytic carbon blacks increased after high-energy electron bombardment. The ash content of the pyrolytic carbon black was reduced from 22.5% to 8.4% after rinsing with hydrochloric acid, and the tensile stress at 300% was increased by about 2.2 MPa.

BACKGROUND: Uncemented Total Hip Replacement (THR) is at present an accepted treatment in patients with severe deformity of the hip caused by advanced ankylosing spondylitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 20 patients, 2 female and 18 male, who had 29 THRs, all through a posterior approach. The patient's age at index surgery ranged from 20 to 47 years (mean 35.1). No trochanteric osteotomy was performed in any patient. A double cut of the femoral neck was performed for hips which were ankylosed in external rotation and flexion. Follow-up ranged from 18 to 46 months (mean 22.2 months). RESULTS: The mean preoperative Harris Hip Score (HHS) was 34.6. At last follow-up all hips were considered excellent, with a mean HHS of 90. Radiographs revealed that the acetabular and femoral components were satisfactorily positioned with no radiographic evidence of loosening. No heterotrophic ossification was found. CONCLUSIONS: 1) Trochanteric Osteotomy was not found necessary to expose the hip through the posterior approach. 2) Uncemented THR using HA coated stem in the treatment of severe deformity of the hip caused by advanced ankylosing spondylitis allowed good lower limb function.
