RESUMO

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is a health problem observed in women of reproductive age. Different diets, physical activity recommendations and lifestyle changes can be effective in dealing with the symptoms of PCOS. Nutrition is indeed an essential part of the treatment of the disease as it directly affects body weight loss, insulin resistance, lipid profile, hormones, and dermatological complaints such as acne. Polyphenols, simply classified as flavonoids and non-flavonoids, are bioactive components found in plant-based foods. The most common polyphenols in the diet are flavanols, flavonols, flavanone, anthocyanins. In particular, polyphenols which are compounds naturally found in foods, have antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic benefits along with many other ones. In the treatment of PCOS, polyphenols may help reduce the symptoms, improve insulin resistance and poor lipid profile, and cure hormonal disorders. It has been reported that polyphenols are influential in menstrual cycle disorders and enable a decrease in body weight, hyperandrogenism, estrogen, testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH)/follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) ratios and LH. For adequate daily intake of polyphenols, which are found in high amounts in fruits and vegetables, at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables should be consumed in addition to a healthy nutrition pattern. In this review, the effects of various polyphenols on polycystic ovary syndrome are discussed.

This review discusses epigenetic mechanisms and the relationship of infertility in men and women in relation to parameters pertaining to nutrition. The prevalence of infertility worldwide is 8-12 %, and one out of every eight couples receives medical treatment. Epigenetic mechanisms, aging, environmental factors, dietary energy and nutrients and non-nutrient compounds; more or less energy intake, and methionine come into play in the occurrence of infertility. It also interacts with vitamins B12, D and B6, biotin, choline, selenium, zinc, folic acid, resveratrol, quercetin and similar factors. To understand the molecular mechanisms regulating the expression of genes that affect infertility, the environment, the role of genotype, age, health, nutrition and changes in the individual's epigenotype must first be considered. This will pave the way for the identification of the unknown causes of infertility. Insufficient or excessive intake of energy and certain macro and micronutrients may contribute to the occurrence of infertility as well. In addition, it is reported that 5-10 % of body weight loss, moderate physical activity and nutritional interventions for improvement in insulin sensitivity contribute to the development of fertility. Processes that pertain to epigenetics carry alterations which are inherited yet not encoded via the DNA sequence. Nutrition is believed to have an impact over the epigenetic mechanisms which are effective in the pathogenesis of several diseases like infertility. Epigenetic mechanisms of individuals with infertility are different from healthy individuals. Infertility is associated with epigenetic mechanisms, nutrients, bioactive components and numerous other factors.

INTRODUCTION: The etiologies of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) are still poorly understood, and many factors such as age, autoimmunity, genetics, idiopathicity, iatrogenesis, and oxidative stress (OS) play a role. Oxidative cellular damage increases following reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced aging. This is the first study to evaluate the serum and follicular fluid (FF) thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients under 35 years of age with DOR undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). METHODS: In this study, DOR was defined by the Poseidon criteria, and Poseidon group 3 women were selected as the study group (n = 40). The control group was composed of patients with the diagnosis of mild-moderate male factor infertility (n = 30). RESULTS: The FF and serum native and total thiol levels, the markers of the antioxidant system, were significantly decreased in the DOR group compared with the control group (p = 0.021) (p = 0.037) (p = 0.029) (p = 0.04). On the other hand, we found no significant differences in the oxidant parameters between the groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: An intrinsic deficiency of antioxidants can play an important role in the etiology of DOR. The dietary addition of antioxidants could be beneficial in DOR patients.

The relationship between oxidative stress and unexplained infertility (UEI) has not been studied in detail. This is the first study to evaluate dysfunctional high-density lipoprotein (HDL) by the myeloperoxidase (MPO) and paraoxonase (PON) ratio to investigate the role of oxidative stress in UEI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with UEI (study group, n = 40) and male factor infertility (control group, n = 36) were included in this prospective study. Demographics and laboratory assessments were analyzed. RESULTS: Total dosages of gonadotropin were higher in UEI when compared to the control group (p = 0.033). Number of Grade 1 embryos and the quality of blastocysts were lower in UEI than in the control group (p = 0.024, p = 0.020, respectively), whereas serum MPO/PON ratio was higher in UEI (p = 0.042). Stepwise linear regression analysis revealed that serum MPO/PON ratio levels could significantly predict the duration of infertility (p = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS: Serum MPO/PON ratio increased in patients with UEI, whereas the number of Grade 1 embryos and the quality of blastocysts decreased. Similar clinical pregnacy rates were found in both groups but the ET on day five is associated with higher clinical pregnancy rate in the male factor infertility.

The intestinal microbiota begins to take shape in the mother's womb, changes depending on many factors. It is known that the intestinal microbiota has an important role in the maturation of the immune system, also in the prevention of diseases that occur in newborn, childhood, adulthood. Nutrition is the main factor on the development of microbiota in infants after birth. The microbiota compositions of breastfed infants are different from formula-fed infants. Breast milk oligosaccharides play an important role in the development of infants' microbiota. The higher number of Bifidobacterium species and lower α and ß diversity in breastfed infants are considered protective. A dysbiosis occurring in the microbiota can cause adverse effects on health. Human milk oligosaccharides also have protective effects on the microbiota. These protective effects are to promote the growth of intestinal microbiota, prevent the adhesion of viruses to the colon, promote the growth of Bifidobacterium with its prebiotic effect. Short-chain fatty acids resulting from their digestion, also have protective effects. Another component that shapes the gut microbiota is HM glycoproteins. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of breast milk on the development of microbiota, to present the results by scanning the literature.

This study was conducted to examine the levels of vitamin D in postterm pregnancy. The study consisted of two groups: Group 1: women with postterm pregnancy in whom labour has not started (n = 40). Group 2: pregnant women with spontaneous labour between 37 and 41 weeks of gestation (n = 40). Demographic characteristics of individuals, age, body mass index, gravida, parity, living child, number of abortions and birth characteristics were recorded. Prepartum and postpartum haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Hct) values ​​and vitamin D levels of pregnant women were measured. We found no significant differences in vitamin D levels, smoking, mode of delivery, induction of labour, methods of cervical ripening and maternal and perinatal complications between the groups (p > .05). D vitamin in the model had a statistically significant effect on prepartum Hb (p < .05). Vitamin D levels seem not to be associated with postterm pregnancy. Vitamin D had a statistically significant effect on prepartum Hb.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? The aetiology of post term pregnancy is not clearly known, factors such as foetal anencephaly, foetal sex, placental sulfatase deficiency, genetic factors, and high pre-pregnancy body mass index play a role.What do the results of this study add? Vitamin D levels seem not to be associated with postterm pregnancy. Vitamin D had a statistically significant effect on prepartum Hb.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between vitamin D levels and postterm pregnancy.
