RESUMO

Leguminous crop Tephrosia candida has high biomass production and contains a substantial quantity of nutrients within its biomass. Starting in 2019, a long-term study was done to find the best Tephrosia candida dose for mulching in guava orchards. The study had four treatments: T1 = 3.0 kg dry biomass m-2 of the plant basin, T2 = 2.0 kg, T3 = 1.0 kg, and T4 = control (no mulch). Every year, the treatments imposed in the month of August. The third year (2021-2022) results indicated that mulching with 3 kg of biomass m-2 increased trunk diameter, fruit yield, fruit weight, specific leaf area, total leaf chlorophyll, and leaf macro- and micro-nutrients. At 3.0 kg m-2, mulching improved soil properties such as EC, available nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, DTPA extractable micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn), total organic carbon (Ctoc), soil organic carbon (Csoc), organic carbon fractions, and microbial biomass carbon between 0-0.15 m and 0.15-0.30 m. There was an increasing trend in dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and fluorescein diacetate (FDA). The Tephrosia leaf litter exhibited decay constants of 1.27 year-1, and the carbon content was 40.11%. Therefore, applying Tephrosia biomass mulching at a rate of 3.0 kg m-2 is a viable long-term solution for enhancing soil fertility and sequestering carbon.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine: (1) the prevalence and socio-economic distribution of undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM); (2) the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM; and (3) if this relationship is mediated by gender. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional nationally representative household-based survey. METHODS: We used data from the Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey from 2017 to 18. Our findings were based on the responses of 12,144 individuals aged 18 years and older. As a measure of SES, we focused on standard of living (hereinafter referred to as wealth). The study's outcome variables were prevalence of total (diagnosed + undiagnosed), undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM. We used three regression-based approaches-adjusted odds ratio, relative inequality index, and slope inequality index-to assess different aspects of SES differences in the prevalence of total, undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM. We used logistic regression analysis to look at the adjusted association between SES and the outcomes after gender stratification to see whether gender status moderates the association between SES and the targeted outcomes. RESULTS: In our sample analysis, the age-adjusted prevalence of total, undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM was 9.1%, 61.4%, 64.7%, and 72.1%, respectively. Females had a higher prevalence of DM and undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled DM than males. When compared to people in the poor SES group, people in the rich and middle SES groups had 2.60 times (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.05-3.29) and 1.47 times (95% CI 1.18-1.83) higher chance of developing DM. When compared to individuals in the poor SES group, those in the rich SES groups were 0.50 (95% CI 0.33-0.77) and 0.55 times (95% CI 0.36-0.85) less likely to have undiagnosed and untreated DM. CONCLUSIONS: In Bangladesh, rich SES groups were more likely than poor SES groups to have DM, whereas poor SES groups with DM were less likely than rich SES groups to be aware of their disease and obtain treatment. The government and other concerned parties are urged by this study to pay more attention to developing suitable policy measures to reduce the risk of DM, particularly among rich SES groups, as well as targeted efforts to screen for and diagnose DM in socio-economically disadvantaged groups.

The optical performance of low-bilayer-thickness metallic multilayers (ML) can be improved significantly by limiting the intermixing of consecutive layers at the interfaces. Barrier layers are supposed to exhibit a decisive role in controlling diffusion across the interfaces. The element-specific grazing incidence extended X-ray absorption fine structure technique using synchrotron radiation has been used in conjunction with grazing incidence X-ray reflectivity and diffuse X-ray scattering measurements to study the impact of the two most common barrier layers, viz., C and B4C, at the interfaces of Cr/Sc MLs. The diffusion propagation is reduced by both the barrier layers; however, it is found that the improvement is more significant with the B4C barrier layer. It is seen that C forms an intermixed layer with Sc and leads to carbide formation at the interface, which then acts as shielding and prevents further interdiffusion, while B4C hardly penetrates into Sc and stops the overlap between Sc and Cr directly by wetting the corresponding interface. Thus, the above measurements reveal crucial and precise information regarding the elemental diffusion kinetics at the interfaces of Cr/Sc MLs in a non-destructive way, which is very important for technological applications of these MLs as X-ray optical devices.

The influence of a carbon barrier layer to improve the reflectivity of Cr/Ti multilayers, intended to be used in the water window wavelength regime, is investigated. Specular grazing-incidence X-ray reflectivity results of Cr/Ti multilayers with 10 bilayers show that interface widths are reduced to ∼0.24 nm upon introduction of a ∼0.3 nm C barrier layer at each Cr-on-Ti interface. As the number of bilayers increases to 75, a multilayer with C barrier layers maintains almost the same interface widths with no cumulative increase in interface imperfections. Using such interface-engineered Cr/C/Ti multilayers, a remarkably high soft X-ray reflectivity of ∼31.6% is achieved at a wavelength of 2.77 nm and at a grazing angle of incidence of 16.2°, which is the highest reflectivity reported so far in the literature in this wavelength regime. Further investigation of the multilayers by diffused grazing-incidence X-ray reflectivity and grazing-incidence extended X-ray absorption fine-structure measurements using synchrotron radiation suggests that the improvement in interface microstructure can be attributed to significant suppression of inter-diffusion at Cr/Ti interfaces by the introduction of C barrier layers and also due to the smoothing effect of the C layer promoting two-dimensional growth of the multilayer.

Standard mitral valve replacement in patients with chronic mitral valve regurgitation and mitral valve stenosis consistently results in a decrease in early postoperative left ventricular ejection performance. Some studies showed that preservation of mitral valve leaflet and subvalvular apparatus can reduce postoperative left ventricular dysfunction. On the basis of the concept, this randomized clinical trial comparing mitral valve replacement with preservation of mitral subvalvular apparatus and conventional mitral valve replacement performed in National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Dhaka, Bangladesh, in the period of July 2010 to December 2011. We included 60 patients of mitral regurgitation and mitral stenosis, among them 30 patients underwent mitral valve replacement with preservation of mitral subvalvular apparatus (Group A) and 30 patients underwent conventional mitral valve replacement (Group B). There was no significant difference between two groups in terms of peri-operative variables. But there was significant higher incidence of Low cardiac output (LOS) syndrome [36.7% vs. 6.9% (p<0.05)] and congestive heart failure in Group B than Group A. The duration of ICU stay was also significantly higher in conventional mitral valve replacement group [113.23±11.30 hours vs. 96.23±20.02 (p=0.001)]. Additionally, there was significantly less fall of left ventricular ejection fraction in preservation of mitral subvalvular apparatus group [preop 65.27±5.45, at discharge 54.31±3.78, after 3 months 58.28±5.20 (p<0.0001)] than conventional group [preop 66.43±4.58, at discharge 46.43±3.87, after 3 months 46.55±3.63 (p<0.0001)]. In this study left ventricular ejection fraction was used as measure of left ventricular function. We postulate that, this relative preservation of left ventricular ejection fraction was likely the result of preservation of mitral subvalvular apparatus.

Vehicular pollution in cities is engendering the need to enhance the sequestration of CO2 through bio-edaphic factors, such as trees and soil. Hence, this pioneering study aimed to analyze the interdependencies of the bio-edaphic ecosystem during carbon sequestration on a national highway in Guwahati, Assam, India. To quantify the tree carbon stock, soil physicochemical properties, soil nutrients, bulk density, organic carbon, and soil carbon stock, trees with diameters at breast height (dbh) ≥ 2 cm and soil samples from different depths (0-15 cm, 15-30 cm, and 30-45 cm) were taken from six areas spread over 36 plots of equal size (2 × 10 m) arranged in a zig-zag manner. The studied parameters were compared among the different areas. It was found that the tree and soil carbon stock, along with soil nutrients, were greater in the Garchuk-Lokhra area (sample area-4). A significantly strong correlation was observed between the soil carbon stock and the above and below-ground biomass of trees (AGB, r = 0.865; BGB, r = 0.847), which indicated the co-dependencies of the bio-edaphic ecosystem in accumulating carbon. Peltophorum ferrugineum (Decne.) Benth is recommended for planting because it has emerged as a tolerant species and has the greatest carbon storage potential. The bio-edaphic ecosystem of the national highway is now on a carbon-friendly trajectory that follows the UNFCCC guidelines and the REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) strategy. However further research on carbon budgeting is required.

INTRODUCTION: Use of synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray source in medical imaging has shown great potential for improving soft-tissue image contrast such as the breast. The present study demonstrates quantitative X-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCI) technique derived from propagation-dependent phase change observed in the breast tissue-equivalent test materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Indian synchrotron facility (Indus-2, Raja Ramanna Centre of Advanced Technology [RRCAT]) was used to carry out phantom feasibility study on phase-contrast mammography. Different phantoms and samples, including locally fabricated breast tissue-equivalent phantoms were used to perform absorption and phase mode imaging using 12 and 16 keV SR X-ray beam. Edge-enhancement index (EEI) and edge enhancement to noise ratio (EE/N) were measured for all the images. Absorbed dose to air values were calculated for 12 and 16 keV SR X-ray beam using the measured SR X-ray photon flux at the object plane and by applying the standard radiation dosimetry formalism. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: It was observed in case of all the phantoms and test samples that EEI and EE/N values are relatively higher for images taken in the phase mode. The absorbed dose to air at imaging plane was found to be 75.59 mGy and 28.9 mGy for 12 and 16 keV SR energies, respectively. However, these dose values can be optimized by reducing the image acquisition time without compromising the image quality when clinical samples are imaged. This work demonstrates the feasibility of XPCI in mammography using 12 and 16 keV SR X-ray beams.

Ore minerals in dolomites and Graphite Mica Schist (GMS) were studied by synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography (SR-µCT) and optical microscopy. High resolution µCT images of ore minerals were obtained at Imaging Beamline (BL-4), Indus-2 synchrotron radiation source for the comprehensive volume characterization of minerals. Optical microscopy was used for mineral identification, mineral/rock characterization and quantification of ore mineral assemblages was also confirmed by XRD. 3D images from SR-µCT have shown spatial distribution of major minerals and crystals of different minerals in the volume of samples. The results obtained shows that the GMS and dolomitic hosted rocks mined from region near Udaipur, Rajasthan contains sulfide mineral phases. SR-µCT facilitates visualization of the association of the various metallic minerals with the host rock. The presence of economically important metallic minerals galena, sphalerite and pyrite found in the samples through SR-µCT has implications on exploration and processing of ores.

It is unclear whether incidental carotid artery calcification (CAC) on radiographs has a defined relationship to clinically significant carotid artery stenosis, and therefore risk of stroke. The primary objective of this study was to ascertain the relationship between dental radiograph detected carotid calcification and carotid artery stenoses ≥50% on carotid duplex ultrasound. We carried out an observational study of patients undergoing routine dental orthopantomogram (OPG) examinations. Consecutive patients with CAC on OPG were prospectively matched to those without CAC based on age and gender. Ultrasound of the carotid arteries was performed to determine the presence of stenosis (≥50%) in either vessel. Of 5780 consecutive OPG examinations with suitable images for analysis, CAC was detected in 10.8%. A total of 233 patients underwent carotid ultrasound (130 with and 103 without CAC on OPG). The prevalence of a clinically significant (≥50%) carotid stenosis on ultrasound was 15.4% (20/130) in those with CAC and 5.8% (6/103) for those without CAC on OPG. Incidental CAC detected on routine OPG requires both radiological reporting and clinical follow-up since 1 in 7 patients will have a clinically significant carotid artery stenosis as compared with 1 in 20 patients who do not have CAC. Immunosuppressive therapy fails to suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines, particularly by CD8+ T cells, in stable lung transplant recipients and those undergoing chronic rejection, suggesting that some patients may become relatively resistant to immunosuppressants such as glucocorticoids (GC). We have shown loss of GC receptor (GCR) from the CD8+ cells, and we hypothesized that the drug membrane efflux pump, p-glycoprotein-1 (Pgp), may also be involved in lymphocyte steroid resistance following lung transplant. Pgp/GCR expression and interferon (IFN)-γ/tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α proinflammatory cytokine production was measured in blood lymphocytes from 15 stable lung transplant patients, 10 patients with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) and 10 healthy aged-matched controls (± prednisolone ± Pgp inhibitor, cyclosporin A ± GCR activator, Compound A) using flow cytometry. Both Pgp+ and Pgp- lymphocyte subsets from all subjects produced IFN-γ/TNF-α proinflammatory cytokines. Pgp expression was increased in CD8+ Pgp+ T cells and correlated with IFN-γ/TNF-α expression and BOS grade. Reduced GCR was observed in CD8+ Pgp- T, natural killer (NK) T-like and NK cells from stable patients compared with controls, and reduced further in CD8+ Pgp- T cells in BOS. The addition of 2·5 ng/ml cyclosporin A and 1 µM prednisolone inhibit IFN-γ/TNF-α production significantly by CD8+ Pgp+ T cells from BOS patients. The addition of 10 µM Compound A and 1 µM prednisolone inhibit IFN-γ/TNF-α production significantly by CD8+ Pgp- T cells from BOS patients. BOS is associated with increased Pgp expression and loss of GCR from steroid-resistant proinflammatory CD8+ T cells. Treatments that inhibit Pgp and up-regulate GCR in CD8+ T cells may improve graft survival.

INTRODUCTION: Image quality of digital mammography system is generally defined by three primary physical parameters, namely, contrast, resolution, and noise. Quantification of these metrics can be done by measuring objective image quality parameters defined as contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), modulation transfer function (MTF), and noise power spectra (NPS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, various imaging metrics such as CNR, contrast detail resolution, MTF, and NPS were evaluated for a direct flat-panel detector-based digital mammography system following the European Guidelines. Furthermore, system performance relating to both image quality and doses were evaluated using figure of merit (FOM) in terms of CNR2/mean glandular dose (MGD) under automatic exposure control (AEC) and clinically used OPDOSE operating mode. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Under AEC mode, FOM values for the 4.5 cm thick BARC polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom were found to be 15.02, 15.88, and 19.82 at Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh, and W/Rh target/filter (T/F), respectively. Under OPDOSE mode, FOM values were found to 65.32, 11.80, and 1.14 for the BARC PMMA phantom thickness of 2, 4.5, and 8 cm, respectively. Under OPDOSE mode, the calculated MGD values for three Computerized Imaging Reference Systems slab phantoms having total thickness of 7 cm were observed to be 3.03, 2.32, and 1.75 mGy with glandular/adipose tissue compositions of 70/30, 50/50, and 30/70, respectively, whereas for the 2-8-cm thick BARC PMMA phantom, the calculated MGDs were found to be in the range of 0.57-3.32 mGy. All the calculated MGDs values were found to be lower than the acceptable level of dose limits provided in European Guidelines.

Organic-inorganic nanocomposite self-standing films of Gd3Ga3Al2O12 (GGAG) uniformly dispersed in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene polymer are prepared for radiography application. GGAG:Ce nanoscintillator has been chosen because of its high light output and fast decay time. The nanopowder of GGAG is synthesized by coprecipitation method and dispersed in the polymer matrix by a simple blending technique. The nanocomposite films of thickness in the range of 150-450 µm with a very high inorganic content is achieved by this technique. These films are characterized by their uniformity, optical absorption, photoluminescence, and radioluminescence. These films are further tested for their application in radiography by recording X-ray images using a commercially available charge-coupled device camera. A resolution of 10 lp/mm is obtained using GGAG:PMMA composite film with 50% loading, confirming their application in imaging devices.

Over the past six decades, there has been a decline in novel therapies to treat tuberculosis, while the causative agent of this disease has become increasingly resistant to current treatment regimens. Bacteriophages (phages) are able to kill bacterial cells and understanding this process could lead to novel insights for the treatment of mycobacterial infections. Phages inhibit bacterial gene transcription through phage-encoded proteins which bind to RNA polymerase (RNAP), thereby preventing bacterial transcription. Gp2, a T7 phage protein which binds to the beta prime (ß') subunit of RNAP in Escherichia coli, has been well characterized in this regard. Here, we aimed to determine whether Gp2 is able to inhibit RNAP in Mycobacterium tuberculosis as this may provide new possibilities for inhibiting the growth of this deadly pathogen. Results from an electrophoretic mobility shift assay and in vitro transcription assay revealed that Gp2 binds to mycobacterial RNAP and inhibits transcription; however to a much lesser degree than in E. coli. To further understand the molecular basis of these results, a series of in silico techniques were used to assess the interaction between mycobacterial RNAP and Gp2, providing valuable insight into the characteristics of this protein-protein interaction.

The use of photo-peak area ratios are investigated for quantitative estimation of elements, particularly chlorine, in aqueous solutions using neutron induced prompt gamma measurements. A ratio of prompt gamma intensities avoids the need for estimating the incident total neutron fluence and is demonstrated for chlorine concentration estimation in NaCl solutions. Monte Carlo simulation results validated with experimental measurements support the present analysis. Use of several prompt gamma intensities instead of a single one improves the accuracy of the estimated results.

RESUMO

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a liver disease characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of both intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts resulting in cholestasis. Due to nonspecific symptoms it is difficult to diagnose until complication arises. It is common in male and usually associated with other autoimmune diseases. Here, we report a case of PSC in a young female which was initially thought to be drug induced cholestasis without presence of any other autoimmunity.

In this study, the gelation and thermal characteristics of microwave extracted fish scale gelatin blended with natural gums such as gum arabic (AG), xanthan gum (XG), guar gum (GG), and tragacanth gum (TG) was evaluated. The nature of interaction and behavior of gelatin in presence of various gums was confirmed by particle size analysis, viscosity profile, FT-IR analysis and turbidity measurements. DSC data revealed that addition of AG, TG and GG remarkably improved the thermal stability of fish gelatin gel. The composite gels of TG, AG, and XG exhibited higher hardness and bloom strength values as compared to pure fish gelatin implying its textural synergy. Based on qualitative descriptive analysis, TG was found to be superior in improving the stability of fish gelatin gel, closely followed by AG. The results suggest that addition of these gums can reduce syneresis and retard melting of gelatin gels at ambient temperature, which are otherwise soft and thermally unstable.

Renormalization group theory does not restrict the form of continuous variation of critical exponents which occurs in presence of a marginal operator. However, the continuous variation of critical exponents, observed in different contexts, usually follows a weak universality scenario where some of the exponents (e.g., ß, γ, ν) vary keeping others (e.g., δ, η) fixed. Here we report ferromagnetic phase transition in (Sm1-yNdy)0.52Sr0.48MnO3 (0.5 ≤ y ≤ 1) single crystals where all three exponents ß, γ, δ vary with Nd concentration y. Such a variation clearly violates both universality and weak universality hypothesis. We propose a new scaling theory that explains the present experimental results, reduces to the weak universality as a special case, and provides a generic route leading to continuous variation of critical exponents and multi-criticality.

Fish roes are considered as nutritionally valuable for their high content of essential fatty acids and amino acids. However, roe lipids undergo considerable extent of oxidation during processing and storage, imparting objectionable bitter taste and rancid flavour to roe products. Hence, the objective of the study was to reconstitute the roe mass and microencapsulate lipid fraction, so that small oil droplets are entrapped within a dry matrix of roe proteins during spray drying. Prior to spray drying, the emulsion was stabilised with gum arabic as it also act as a co-wall polymer. The microscopic images indicated presence of larger aggregates in unstabilised powder (RC) compared to well-separated particles in stabilised powder (RG). Incorporation of gum arabic retarded rancidity development during storage. In vitro digestive pattern of roe powder indicated higher amount of oil release in RG. These observations highlight the potential of converting the soft textured carp roe mass into stable fish roe powder with superior storage stability and functionality.

Experiments were conducted to study the effects of static magnetic fields (SMFs) on the venation network of soybean leaves using the synchrotron-based X-ray micro-imaging technique. The seeds of soybean (Glycine max, variety JS-335) were pretreated with different SMFs from 50 to 300 mT in steps of 50 mT for 1 h. The phase-contrast images obtained showed that, as the strength of the SMF increased, the area, width of the midrib, area of the midrib and minor vein of the middle leaflets of third trifoliate leaves also increased up to the SMF strength of 200 mT (1 h) and decreased thereafter. Quantification of the major conducting vein also showed the differences in the major and minor vein structures of the soybean leaves as compared with control leaves. Further, the phase-retrieval technique has been applied to make the segmentation process easy and to quantify the major and minor veins in the venation network. The width and area of midrib enhancement by pre-treatment with SMF implies an enhancement in the uptake of water, which in turn causes an increased rate of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance.

The synergistic efficacy of gum arabic and sage polyphenols in stabilising capsule wall and protecting fish oil encapsulates from heat induced disruption and oxidative deterioration during spray drying was assessed. The emulsions prepared with sodium caseinate as wall polymer, gum arabic as wall co-polymer and sage extract as wall stabiliser was spray dried using a single fluid nozzle. Fish oil encapsulates stabilised with gum arabic and sage extract (SOE) exhibited significantly higher encapsulation efficiency compared to encapsulates containing gum arabic alone (FOE). Scanning electron microscopic and atomic force microscopic images revealed uniform encapsulates with good sphericity and smooth surface for SOE, compared to FOE powder. In vitro oil release of microencapsulates indicated negligible oil release in buffered saline whereas more than 80% of the oil loaded in encapsulates were released in simulated GI fluids. The encapsulates containing sage extract showed a lower rate of lipid oxidation during storage.
