RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study has been conducted so as to contribute to health statistics of hydatid cyst by the data obtained from our clinic, and to discuss hydatid cysts in unusual locations. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Cases diagnosed as hydatid cyst at Dr. Lutfi Kirdar Kartal Research and Education Hospital Pathology Clinic between 2007 and 2015 have been evaluated based on criteria such as age, sex and location. RESULTS: A total of 364 cases, 209 females and 155 males, have been included in the study. The subjects in the cases are aged between 4 and 81 (mean: 38.84). Regarding the sites, 254 (69.8℅) of the cases are located in liver, and 53 (14.6℅) in the lung. Fifty-seven cases (15.6℅) have been detected in unusual sites other than the lung or liver. The rate of isolated organ involvement, other than the lung and liver, has been found to be 10.3℅. CONCLUSION: Since hydatid cyst can be found in all the body sites, it should be taken into account in the differential diagnosis of all cystic lesions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was a retrospective evaluation of 299 cases that were histopathologically diagnosed as cystic echinococcosis (CE) in the pathology laboratory of our hospital in a seven years period. METHODS: All specimens sent to the laboratory were examined microscopically following macroscopic and hematoxylin eosin (H-E) staining. 299 cases were reviewed according to age, gender and organ affected by the cyst, more than one specimen of the same organ was evaluated once. RESULTS: Of the 299 cases, 44.5% (133) were male whereas 55.5% (166) of them were female. Additionally, %5 (15) of the cases were between 0-15 ages, %31.8 (95) of them were between 16-30 ages, %29.4 (88) of them were between 31-45 ages, % 24.4 (73) of them were between 46-60 ages and %9.4 (28) of them were older than 61. Cysts were mostly localized in liver, lungs and peritoneal cavity, %71.9 (215), %11.4 (34) and %4.7 (14) respectively. CONCLUSION: Demographic features of our cases were mostly in line with the previous literature. Because of the presence of atypical localized cases, during pathologic evaluation of all surgical cystic specimens, elements of this parasite should be searched and evaluated carefully.

RESUMO

Lymphangioma is a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system, which is located mostly on the head and neck region. Most of the cases are seen at age younger 2 years. It is rare in adult population and when detected, it can be treated with surgical excision. We present a 50-year-old patient with giant lymphangioma on the posterior cervical region of the neck treated by surgical treatment successfully.
