RESUMO

Acanthophoraspicifera, a red alga considered an alien species, was discovered for the first time on the Pacific coast of Mexico in 2006 from a locality inside La Paz Bay, Gulf of California. Since then, more records have shown its presence, 17 localities having been added up to 2015. A two-year field study (2020-2022) visiting 31 sites along the coast of La Paz Bay, complemented with data from literature and citizen science, resulted in a database of 709 entries that spans the data from 2004 to 2023. These data showed a distribution that goes from Punta Coyote, close to Boca Grande, the northern entrance to the Bay to Playa Tecolote in the south, more than 100 km of coastline, including Espiritu Santo Archipelago, an area considered a natural reserve since 2007. Anthropogenic activity and environmental variables did not present statistical differences that explain A.spicifera spreading. It represents a naturalised alien species without evidence of a negative impact. Still, it soon could acquire the status of invasive species together with its epibionts Bryozoa and Hydrozoa detected in this study.

The brown alga Sargassum provides a natural substrate occupied by hydrozoans in shallow marine waters. A global count in 2007 listed 39 epibiotic species of Hydrozoa growing on Sargassum, but more studies have been published since, therefore, an update is timely, particularly due to the increased abundance of Sargassum in the Caribbean. This review, based on a recent literature survey and new records from Mexico, includes 133 publications of epibiotic hydrozoans on Sargassum spanning 220 years, from 1802 to 2022. A total of 131 hydrozoan species were recorded on 26 species of Sargassum, most belonging to the subclass Hydroidolina (130), with only one record of a trachyline medusa (Gonionemus vertens, subclass Trachylinae). Most publications centered on the Tropical Atlantic, where the greatest number of hydrozoan species (67 species) were recorded. All hydrozoan species possess a hydrorhiza, except one hydromedusae species that attach to Sargassum via adhesive tentacles. Most of the hydrozoan species associated with Sargassum exhibited a benthic life cycle (93 species) and are comprised of erect, branched colonies (67 species) and large hydrothecae (69 species). Although the number of studies of epibiotic hydrozoans on Sargassum has increased since the mid-20th century, nevertheless hydrozoan richness has not reached an asymptote. Therefore, more sampling of Sargassum species would likely identify more hydrozoan species associated with Sargassum, especially among benthic Sargassum, and might help reveal potential biogeographical and ecological patterns between Sargassum and hydrozoan epibionts.

Since 2014, the Mexican Caribbean beaches have received massive influxes of the brown seaweed Sargassum (S. fluitans III, S. natans I and S. natans VIII), causing serious ecological and economic effects. Concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were determined over an annual cycle in pelagic Sargassum species from massive influxes into the Mexican Caribbean. The contribution of trace elements, polysaccharides (alginate and fucoidans), and their main functional groups (uronic acids and sulfate) to arsenic content in Sargassum fluitans - the most abundant species in the Sargassum influx - is discussed. Arsenic was recorded in all samples, yielding mean concentrations of 74.2 ± 2.84 mg kg-1. Significant differences were found between species for As, Cu, Fe, and Pb, but not for Cd and Zn; also, S. fluitans showed significant differences in metal content between seasons for all elements, as well as in alginate and uronic acids from fucoidan. The season of the year, copper, iron, uronic acids, and sulfate content in fucoidan were the main variables associated with arsenic accumulation in S. fluitans as evidenced with a Generalized Linear Model. Arsenic content in Sargassum biomass exceeded the maximum allowable level in the rainy season; therefore, the content of this trace element should be carefully monitored for safe usage of Sargassum biomass.

In the last decade, unprecedented arrivals of pelagic Sargassum (Sargassum influx) have been reported for the Caribbean coasts causing severe ecological and economical affectations and remarking the necessity to characterize the phenomenon. In the north coast of the Mexican Caribbean, spatial characterization of Sargassum influx was performed in terms of its abundance, species composition and chemical content using a combination of in situ sampling and remote sensing evaluations. Sargassum influx was detected within the 25 km fringe near to Quintana Roo coast in coincidence with beach-cast events during September 2018. Significant spatial variation in abundance and species composition of the stranded biomass was found for the six localities studied, which was related to the local environmental conditions. Pelagic species of Sargassum were the main component ranging from 78.1 to 99.6% of the total beach-cast (wrack) fresh biomass, whereas benthic macrophytes (seagrasses and macroalgae) were a minor component reaching up to 21% in some localities. The biochemical composition of beach-cast Sargassum resulted spatially homogeneous for most of the components analyzed; only carbon tissue content, ash metals (particularly Fe and As) and isotopic composition changed spatially. This study represents baseline information for the region. Long-term seasonal evaluations of Sargassum influx along Mexican Caribbean are required to define adequate management strategies and exploitation.

In the Gulf of California; mineral deposits have contributed to high metal contents in coastal environments. This study examined cadmium; lead; copper; zinc; and iron contents in three fish species; Kyphosus vaigiensis (herbivore), Stegastes rectifraenum (omnivore), and Balistes polylepis (carnivore) at two mining sites. Metal concentrations were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes were estimated using mass spectrophotometry. Also, we assessed the risk to human health from the consumption of these three species based on permissible limits; although only two of them (Kyphosus and Balistes) are consumed as food. Metal concentrations differed among fish species; except for iron. The highest concentrations of metals were not always recorded in the species at the highest trophic level; i.e., Balistes. The highest concentrations (dry weight) recorded were cadmium (0.21 ± 0.03 µg g-1) and lead (1.67 ± 0.26 µg g-1), in S. rectifraenum; copper (1.60 ± 0.49 µg g-1) and zinc (67.30 ± 8.79 µg g-1), in B. polylepis; and iron (27.06 ± 2.58 µg g-1), in K. vaigiensis. Our findings show that each element accumulates differently in particular marine organisms; depending on the physiology of the species and the biogeochemistry of its habitat; which in turn is affected by the anthropogenic activities in adjacent areas. No risk of heavy metals toxicity is expected from the human consumption of the species and sites studied.

Massive accumulations of pelagic species of Sargassum have generated recent social, economic and ecological problems along Caribbean shores. In the Mexican Caribbean, these events have prompted the study of diverse biological and ecological aspects of these macroalgae. However, studies on their associated biota, including Hydrozoa, remain scarce. This research provides important species observations in an area where data is lacking. The occurrence and percent cover of hydroids on Sargassum thalli collected on the beach at Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico from April 2018 to March 2019 was studied. Three pelagic species and morphotypes of Sargassum from this area were analyzed: Sargassum fluitans III, S. natans I and S. natans VIII, as well as a benthic species, S. polyceratium var. ovatum. A total of 14 taxa of hydroids, belonging to the superorders "Anthoathecata" and Leptothecata, were identified. In our study, more hydroid taxa were observed on axes of the different species of Sargassum than on leaves or aerocysts. In general, the greatest species richness of hydroids was observed from February to April. Results show that live hydrozoans attached to pelagic Sargassum are transported into the area. This should be considered in future management measures that address the recurring coastal abundance of Sargassum and its associated biota in the Caribbean region.

No hay duda de que el hombre ha provocado cantidad de extinciones, sobre todo en el medio terrestre. En el mar, en cambio, comprobar más allá de la duda razonable que el último representante de una especie ha desaparecido de la faz de la tierra es una tarea más difícil. En el presente trabajo se muestran los resultados más importantes de una rigurosa revisión de las extinciones marinas documentadas durante los últimos 200 años. Se encontró que ~50 por ciento de las extinciones y extirpaciones de especies marinas resultan dudosas porque no se considera información crítica acerca de su distribución espacio-temporal, o bien la evidencia que se utiliza para evaluarlas es insuficiente o inadecuada. Se concluye que 1) el hombre es capaz de eliminar especies marinas, en particular aquellas que naturalmente son más propensas a la extinción; 2) las extinciones registradas en el mar son menos frecuentes que las del medio terrestre, y a pesar de que existe una tendencia positiva en el número promedio de extinciones documentadas durante los siglos XIX y XX, la tendencia de las extinciones registradas es negativa en los últimos 100 años; 3) antes de declarar una especie como extinta, la evidencia que apoya tal declaración debe ser evaluada con todo el rigor científico; y 4) declarar de manera prematura la extinción de especies, pudiera afectar negativamente los propios esfuerzos que se inviertan para la conservación.
