RESUMO

Thermodynamically metastable glasses that can contain metastable species are important functional materials. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is an effective technique for determining the valence states of cations, especially for the doping element in phosphors. Herein, we first confirm the valence change of silver cations from monovalent to trivalent in aluminophosphate glasses by X-ray irradiation using a combination of Ag L3-edge XANES, electron spin resonance, and simulated XANES spectra based on first-principles calculations. The absorption edge of the experimental and simulated XANES spectra demonstrate the spectral features of Ag(III), confirming that AgO exists as Ag(I)Ag(III)O2. A part of Ag(I) changes to Ag(III) by X-ray irradiation, and the generation of Ag(III) is saturated after high irradiation doses, in good agreement with conventional radiophotoluminescence (RPL) behaviour. The structural modelling based on a combination of quantum beam analysis suggests that the local coordination of Ag cations is similar to that of Ag(III), which is confirmed by density functional theory calculations. This demonstration of Ag(III) in glass overturns the conventional understanding of the RPL mechanism of silver cations, redefining the science of silver-related materials.

RESUMO

We performed X-ray absorption studies for the electrolytes of a Ti-Mn redox flow battery (RFB) to understand the redox reaction of the Ti/Mn ions and formation of precipitates in charged catholyte, because suppression of the disproportionation reaction is a key to improve the cyclability of Ti-Mn RFB and enhance the energy density. Hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy with a high transmittance and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy to directly observe the 3d orbitals were complementarily employed. Moreover, the Ti/Mn 3d electronic structure for each precipitate and solution in the charged catholyte was investigated by using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy: the valence of Mn in the precipitate is mostly attributed to 4+, and the solution includes only Mn2+ . This charge disproportionation reaction should occur after the Mn ions in the catholyte should be oxidized from Mn2+ to Mn3+ by charge.

RESUMO

The ligand field (LF) of transition metal ions is a crucial factor in realizing the mechanism of novel physical and chemical properties. However, the low-crystallinity state, including the amorphous state, precludes the clarification of the electronic structural relationship of transition metal ions using crystallographic techniques, ultraviolet and infrared optical methods, and magnetometry. Here, we demonstrate that soft X-ray 2p → 3d core-level absorption spectroscopy (L2,3-edge XAS) systematically revealed the local 3d electronic states, including in the LF, of nitrogen-coordinated transition-metal ions for low-crystallinity cyanide-bridged metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) M[Ni(CN)4] (MNi; M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and Ni[Pd(CN)4] (NiPd). In NiNi and NiPd, N-coordinated Ni ions with square-planar symmetry exhibit strong orbital hybridization and ligand-to-metal charge transfer effects. In MnNi, FeNi, and CoNi, the correlation between the crystalline electric field splitting in the LF and the transition metal-nitrogen bonding length is revealed using the multiplet LF theory. Regardless of the different local symmetries, our results indicate that L2,3-edge XAS is a powerful tool for gaining element-specific knowledge about the transition-metal ion characterizing the functionality of low-crystallinity MOFs and will be the foundation for an attractive platform, such as adsorption/desorption materials.

RESUMO

The SAGA Light Source provides X-ray imaging resources based on high-intensity synchrotron radiation (SR) emitted from the superconducting wiggler at beamline 07 (BL07). By combining quasi-monochromatic SR obtained by the newly installed water-cooled metal filter and monochromatic SR selected by a Ge double-crystal monochromator (DCM) with high-resolution lens-coupled X-ray imagers, fast and low-dose micro-computed tomography (CT), fast phase-contrast CT using grating-based X-ray interferometry, and 2D micro-X-ray absorption fine structure analysis can be performed. In addition, by combining monochromatic SR obtained by a Si DCM with large-area fiber-coupled X-ray imagers, high-sensitivity phase-contrast CT using crystal-based X-ray interferometry can be performed. Low-temperature CT can be performed using the newly installed cryogenic system, and time-resolved analysis of the crystallinity of semiconductor devices in operation can be performed using a time-resolved topography system. The details of each instrument and imaging method, together with exemplary measurements, are presented.

RESUMO

Amorphous coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention owing to their various functionalities. Here, we demonstrate the tunable water adsorption behavior of a series of amorphous cyanide-bridged MOFs with different metals (M[Ni(CN)4]: MNi; M = Mn, Fe, and Co). All three compounds adsorb up to six water molecules at a certain vapor pressure (Pads) and undergo conversion to crystalline Hofmann-type MOFs, M(H2O)2[Ni(CN)4]·4H2O (MNi-H2O; M = Mn, Fe, and Co). The Pads of MnNi, FeNi, and CoNi for water adsorption is P/P0 = 0.4, 0.6, and 0.9, respectively. Although the amorphous nature of these materials prevented structural elucidation using X-ray crystallography techniques, the local-scale structure around the N-coordinated M2+ centers was analyzed using L2,3-, K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, and magnetic measurements. Upon hydration, the coordination geometry of these metal centers changed from tetrahedral to octahedral, resulting in significant reorganization of the MOF local structure. On the other hand, Ni[Ni(CN)4] (NiNi) containing square-planar Ni2+ centers did not undergo significant structural transformation and therefore abruptly adsorbed H2O in the low-pressure region. We could thus define how changes in the bond lengths and coordination geometry are related to the adsorption properties of amorphous MOF systems.

RESUMO

A new perovskite-type cuprate PrCuO3 has been synthesized by high-pressure oxygen annealing. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and absorption spectroscopy revealed that PrCuO3 crystallizes in the GdFeO3-type structure with cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion, forming one-dimensional chains of corner-shared CuO4 plaquettes with nearly divalent Cu ions.

RESUMO

Near-edge x-ray-absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy was adopted to probe the unoccupied electronic states of C60 anchored onto an organized assembly of 11-amino-1-undecane thiol on Au(111). The polarization dependence of the intensity of pi* resonance associated with C60 pi network revealed the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) system to be oriented with an average molecular tilt angle of 57 degrees with respect to the surface normal. Invoking the absence of solid-state band dispersion effects and in comparison to solid C60 and /or 1-ML C60/Au(111), the electronic structure of the resulting assembly was found dominated by spectral position shift and linewidth and intensity changes of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), LUMO+1, and LUMO+2 orbitals. The latter implied hybridization between N Pz of -NH2 group of thiolate SAM and pi levels of C60, resulting in a nucleophilic addition with a change in the symmetry of C60 from Ih to C1 in the SAM. Occurrence of a new feature at 285.3 eV in the NEXAFS spectrum, assigned previously to pi* graphitic LUMO, signified the formation of aggregated clusters, (C60)n of C60 monomer. Low tunneling current scanning tunneling microscopy confirmed them to be spherical and stable aggregates with n approximately 5.

RESUMO

Electronic structure in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of C(60) anchored 11-amino-1-undecane thiol (C(60)-11-AUT) on Au(111) was studied by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and hybrid density functional theory calculations. Valence band features of the molecular conformation revealed the interface electronic structure to be dominated by sigma(S-Au), localized at the thiolate anchor to Au. Formation of a localized covalent bond as a result of hybridization between N P(z) orbital of -NH(2) group of the thiolate SAM and the pi level of C(60) resulted in a symmetry change from I(h) in C(60) to C1 in C(60)-11-AUT SAM. Appearance of low, but finite amplitude surface electronic states of bonded C(60), much beyond the Fermi level, ruled out Au-C(60) end group contact. The band gap E(g) of the SAM, determined to be 2.7 eV, was drastically reduced from the insulating alkanethiol SAMs ( approximately 8.0 eV) and fell intermediate between the C(60) ground state (N electrons, 1.6 eV) and C(60) solid (N+/-1 electrons, 3.7 eV).
