RESUMO

Co-precipitation method was adopted to synthesize ternary heterostructure catalysts La/CS-CoSe NSs (lanthanum/chitosan­cobalt selenide nanostructures) without the use of a surfactant. During synthesis, a fixed amount (3 wt%) of CS was doped with 2 and 4 wt% La to control the growth, recombination rate and stability of CoSe NSs. The doped samples served to enhance the surface area, porosity and active sites for catalytic degradation of rhodamine B dye and antibacterial potential against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Additionally, the synthesized catalysts were examined for morphological, structural and optical characteristics to assess the influence of dopants to CoSe. XRD spectra verified the hexagonal and cubic structure of CoSe, whereas the porosity of the undoped sample (CoSe) increased from 45 to 60 % upon incorporation of dopants (La and Cs). Among the samples analyzed during this study, 4 % La/CS-CoSe exhibited significant bactericidal behavior as well as the highest catalytic reduction of rhodamine B dye in a neutral environment. Molecular docking analysis was employed to elucidate the underlying mechanism behind the bactericidal activity exhibited by CS-CoSe and La/CS-CoSe NSs against DHFRS. aureus and DNA gyraseS. aureus.

Objective: Congenital anomalies (CA) or birth defects cause substantial healthcare burden in developing countries. There are few studies from Pakistan on the prevalence-pattern of CA. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence-pattern and genetic attributes of CA at a tertiary care facility in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Methods: In a cross-sectional study design, patients with CA were ascertained from Pediatric and Neonatal Section of Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi from March-2022 to June-2022. International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) databases were utilized for uniformity in classification. The pattern of CA as well as familial/sporadic nature, syndromic/isolated presentations, and prenatal consanguinity were estimated. Descriptive summaries were generated. Results: A total of 517 independent cases with certain types of CA were recruited. There were eight major and 70 minor categories. Among the major categories, neurological disorders (39.1%) were predominating followed by neuromuscular disorders (21.1%), limb defects (13.5%), musculoskeletal defects (7.4%), blood disorders (4.3%), orofacial defects (3.9%), metabolic disorders (3.7%), and Others (7.1%). The sporadic cases were in majority (72.5%) compared to familial cases (27.5%). Further, 63% patients had syndromic presentations and there were 37% cases with isolated appearances. A total of 70% cases had parental consanguinity. Conclusion: The majority of anomalies were of preventable nature and certain healthcare measures including antinatal care and counseling can be adopted to minimize their burden. Additionally, there is an urgent need to raise awareness of the negative consequences of consanguineous marriages, which constitute a significant risk factor in cases with inherited CA.

RESUMO

Anticoagulation therapy is critical to avoiding thrombotic events in patients following cranial surgery. Although Aspirin, Plavix, and Aggrastat are used as anticoagulants for this purpose, there is no consensus on which agent is the most effective and safe. In this comparative study, we analyze the current evidence on the efficacy and safety of these three anticoagulants in the context of cranial surgeries. This review focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of each anticoagulant, such as its pharmacokinetics, indications, contraindications, and possible consequences. The outcomes of this study will help physicians choose the best anticoagulant for their patients based on individual patient characteristics and the kind of cranial procedure. Aggrastat's potential to be included as a recommended anticoagulant for cranial procedures warrants further study.

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder that affects ~1-2% of the global population, leading to presentation in the emergency room. The neuroimaging modalities have an important application in diagnosing new onset unprovoked seizures and epilepsy. This article discusses the various neuroimaging modalities for diagnosing seizures and epilepsy and addresses that the MRI is the investigation of choice, and urgent imaging is more commonly done by computed tomography in patients with new-onset seizures. The goal of the article was to diagnose seizures and epilepsy for early intervention to prevent complications or damage to the brain. MRI detects even small cortical epileptogenic lesions, whereas computed tomography is used in screening, diagnosis, evaluation, and monitoring of the prognosis of seizures in children. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy provides biochemical measurements of reduced N-acetyl aspartate and increased creatinine and choline in dysfunctioning epileptic zones. Volumetric MRI is very sensitive and specific in determining seizures originating in extratemporal and extrahippocampal sites. Even though diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging has a limited role, it is used in specific pediatric patient groups with temporal lobe epilepsy. Functional radionuclide imaging modalities (positron emission tomography and single-photon emission computerized tomography) are increasingly significant for the identification of the epileptic region. Furthermore, the authors recommend the use of artificial intelligence and further research on imaging modalities for early diagnosis of seizures and epilepsy.

Nanosized zeolite Y is used in various applications from catalysis in petroleum refining to nanofillers in water treatment membranes. Ball milling is a potential and fast technique to decrease the particle size of zeolite Y to the nano range. However, this technique is associated with a significant loss of crystallinity. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the effect of adding biodegradable and recyclable cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) to zeolite Y in a wet ball milling approach. CNFs are added to shield the zeolite Y particles from harsh milling conditions due to their high surface area, mechanical strength, and water gel-like format. Different zeolite Y to CNFs ratios were studied and compared to optimize the ball milling process. The results showed that the optimal zeolite Y to CNFs ratio is 1:1 to produce a median particle size diameter of 100 nm and crystallinity index of 32%. The size reduction process provided accessibility to the zeolite pores and as a result increased their adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity of ball-milled particles for methylene blue increased to 29.26 mg/g compared to 10.66 mg/g of the pristine Zeolite. These results demonstrate the potential of using CNF in protecting zeolite Y particles and possibly other micro particles during ball milling.

Introduction Endometrial cancers (ECs) are the most common gynecological malignancies. Based on morphology and pathogenesis, ECs are segregated into type 1 and 2 ECs. Types 1 ECs are those tumors that are estrogen-driven, whereas type 2 ECs are more aggressive and are independent of hormonal status. In the proposed study, we evaluated the clinicopathological parameters of type 2 ECs and its comparison with type 1 ECs. Methods We retrospectively analyzed seven-year data from archives of pathology, Liaquat National Hospital, from January 2013 to December 2019. All patients underwent radical surgeries for diagnosed EC on endometrial biopsy. All specimens were of total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy, and peritoneal sampling, along with pelvic lymphadenectomy. Records regarding tumor type, grade, depth of myometrial invasion, and ovarian, omental, nodal, and parametrial involvement were assessed. Results A total of 129 cases of ECs were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 57.6 ± 9.3 years. Majority of the cases were type 1 ECs (82.2%). The most common histological type of EC was endometrioid (82.2%) followed by serous carcinoma (10.1%). Most of the tumors were grade 1 (42.6%) and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage I (72.8%). Nodal metastases were present in eight cases (6.2%) and adnexal involvement was present in 12 cases (9.3%). We found a significant association of the type of EC with lymphovascular invasion, nodal metastasis, and adnexal involvement, whereas no significant association of EC type was seen with other clinicopathological characteristics. Conclusions Type 1 EC was the most frequent subtype of EC in our study. On the other hand, type 2 EC was significantly associated with nodal metastasis, lymphovascular invasion, and adnexal involvement, signifying the poor prognostic significance of this group of EC.

In this work, a hydrocracking catalyst, nano zeolite Y-NiO-WO3 is reshaped into nanofibrous form. This novel composite fiber show good mechanical strength together with a uniform elemental distribution for both the acidic and hydrogenation components as confirmed through scanning transmission electron microscopy. The catalyst is tested for n-heptane hydrocracking in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor at reaction temperatures of 350 °C and 400 °C with a time on stream of 180 minutes. The fibers produced from nano zeolite-Y show superior performance with a total conversion of 98.81 wt% and 96.8 wt% at 350 °C and 400 °C respectively. In addition, a low amount of coke (0.40 wt% and 1.05 wt% at 350 °C and 400 °C respectively) was formed with the nano zeolite Y fibers. This superior performance is related to the enhanced accessibility due to the nanofiber shape where the non-woven mesh/network of catalytic fibers prevents the agglomeration of the nanoparticles. Agglomeration is a major cause of hindered accessibility of the reactants to the catalyst active sites. The zeolite particle size, and the shape of the fibrous catalyst, together with its mesoporous character (as confirmed through BET analysis) enhances diffusion and improves accessibility for the reactants to react on the catalytic active sites as proven by the high total n-heptane conversions and high hexane and iso hexane selectivity for n-heptane hydrocracking.

The waste distillery sludge from sugar-cane industry was pretreated physically (boiled, heated and autoclaved) as well as chemically (HCl, H(2)SO(4), H(3)PO(4), NaOH, Ca(OH)(2), Al(OH)(3), C(6)H(6), HCHO, CH(3)OH and C1(2)H(25)OSO(3)Na (sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)) for assessing the comparative sorption capacity of untreated and modified distillery sludge for Pb(II) biosorption from aqueous solutions. Experiments were conducted in shake flasks on a batch basis to access the effect of different experimental parameters such as pH, biosorbent dosage, biosorbent size, initial Pb(II) concentration and contact time. The uptake capacity 'q' (mg/g) of untreated and pretreated distillery sludge was in following order: NaOH (51.29+/-1.21)>HCl (49.82+/-1.22)>HCHO (49.56+/-1.14)>H(2)SO(4) (47.71+/-1.20)>HgCl(2) (45.32+/-1.06)>Ca(OH)(2) (44.01+/-1.18)>MeOH (43.73+/-1.23)>C(6)H(6) (42.72+/-1.19)>H(3)PO(4) (42.01+/-1.17)>SDS (40.87+/-1.27)>autoclaved (40.23+/-1.24)>Boiled (39.95+/-1.19)>heated (38.87+/-1.32)>Al (OH)(3) (38.30+/-1.14)>untreated (37.76+/-1.21). In further parameter studies, the optimized biosorbent size was 0.250 mm at pH 5 and best dose was 0.05 g of biosorbent. The applicability of the Langmuir and Freundlich models for sorption process was tested and best fitted model was Langmuir with the coefficient of determination (R(2)) value, 0.97, the process followed second order kinetic mechanism.
