RESUMO

The effects of pre-treatments on the drying characteristics, water state, thermal properties, and bulk shrinkage of potato slices during microwave vacuum drying (MVD) were investigated. The pre-treatment included ultrasound in distilled water (USOD-0%), and ultrasound-assisted osmotic dehydration in a 60% sucrose solution (USOD-60%). Results showed that the drying time of potato slices was reduced and the drying rate was increased when USOD-0% was used as a pretreatment, whereas USOD-60% had a negative effect on the drying rate of the samples. The Weibull model was effective in predicting the water changes in potato slices during the drying process. NMR analysis revealed that the relative content of immovable water (M22) increased initially, then decreased for drying, while the transverse relaxation time (T2) and the relative content of free water (M23) decreased consistently. The DSC results indicated that the glass transition temperature (Tg) had an inverse relationship with the water content of the samples, yet had virtually no influence on the volume shrinkage. The sample volumes decreased linearly with the decrease in water content during the initial drying stages. USOD pre-treatment lessened the volume shrinkage of MVD potato slices. Static gravimetry was used to determine the moisture sorption isotherms of MVD potato slices at 30 °C within the aw range of 0.113-0.923. The GAB model accurately fitted the experimental sorption data, which showed sigmoid shape curves for the MVD samples. When aw values exceeded 0.7, the USOD-60% treatment significantly reduce the water sorption capacity of MVD potato slices, while USOD-0% treatment was observed to increase the hygroscopic properties of MVD samples. Compared with the control, USOD-0% pretreatment significantly increased the monolayer water content (X0), sorption surface area (S0), the thickness of sorbed water multilayer (tm), and density of sorbed water (Ds) values of MVD potato slices, while USOD-60% decreased these values.

RESUMO

microRNA-122 (miR-122) is a highly conserved microRNA that is predominantly expressed in the liver and plays a critical role in the regulation of liver metabolism. Recent studies have shown that miR-122 is involved in the pathogenesis of various types of cancer, particularly liver cancer. In this sense, The current findings highlighted the potential role of miR-122 in regulating many vital processes in cancer pathophysiology, including apoptosis, signaling pathway, cell metabolism, immune system response, migration, and invasion. These results imply that miR-122, which has been extensively studied for its biological functions and potential therapeutic applications, acts as a tumor suppressor or oncogene in cancer development. We first provide an overview and summary of the physiological function and mode of action of miR-122 in liver cancer. We will examine the various signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms through which miR-122 exerts its effects on cancer cells, including the regulation of oncogenic and tumor suppressor genes, the modulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis, and the regulation of metastasis. Most importantly, we will also discuss the potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications of miR-122 in cancer, including the development of miRNA-based biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, and the potential use of miR-122 as a therapeutic target for cancer treatment.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to explore the wastage of narcotics and controlled medications and, their financial impact in a tertiary care setting over a one-year period. Methodology: The study period was of one year, i.e., October 2020 - September 2021. The venue of study was a tertiary care hospital. The narcotic medications included Fentanyl, Tramadol, Morphine, and Meperidine. The controlled medications included Midazolam, Phenobarbital, Diazepam, Ketamine and Lorazepam. The annual consumption and wastage of the narcotic and controlled medications were documented using data report generated by narcotics and controlled medication in-charge pharmacist through the hospital's online system. Data was reported using average, minimum and maximum values. Quantities of wastage is expressed in terms of ampoules. Costs per ampoule were calculated and expressed in both Saudi Riyal (SAR) and United States Dollar (USD). The study was approved by an ethics committee. Results: The annual wastage of narcotics was 3.19 % while the same for controlled medications was 21.3 %. An annual wastage of 3.81 % was reported for narcotics and controlled medications combined. The total wastage cost of narcotics and controlled medications was 15,443.1 SAR that was equivalent to USD 4085.5. Fentanyl 500mcg formulations had the highest consumption, i.e., 28,580 ampoules followed by Morphine 10 mg formulations, i.e., 27,122 ampoules. The highest ampoule wastage was observed for Morphine 10 mg formulations, i.e., 1956 ampoules. The highest % wastage was observed for Midazolam formulations, i.e., 29.3 %. Conclusion: The overall wastage was less than 5% of the total consumption, however, midazolam was observed to have the highest wastage. Shifting to prefilled syringes supplied by pharmacies, making protocols, and safely pooling costly drugs could result in significant savings.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is of paramount concern globally. Community pharmacists (CPs) play a vital role in supporting judicious antimicrobial use in the community as they are the key healthcare providers at a public level. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perception of CPs towards antimicrobial stewardship at the community level in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to all community pharmacies in four major cities of Saudi Arabia. A simple random sampling approach was used to select pharmacies in each chain. Results: A total of 520 CPs responded to the survey with a response rate of 98.6 %. Most of the pharmacists (n = 479, 92.1 %) accepted that antimicrobial stewardship programs are essential tools to limit injudicious usage of antimicrobials at the community level. Interestingly, very few (n = 105, 21 %) agreed to recommend antibiotics for common illnesses, including upper respiratory tract infections, cold, and flu without a valid prescription. Further, we found a significant role of Saudi health authorities, e.g., Saudi food & drug authorities and the Ministry of Health, in restricting antimicrobials sale in community pharmacies without a valid prescription. Conclusion: Our study findings revealed that CPs had good knowledge about antimicrobial stewardship in Saudi Arabia. The CPs play an active role in the optimization of antimicrobial therapy and infections caused by different microbes. Strict policies by the Saudi health care authority regarding the restricted dispensing of antimicrobials are welcomed by the CPs and thus may contribute toward lowering of antimicrobial resistance burden on the patients and Saudi health care authorities.

Cotton is an important natural fiber crop; its seeds are the main oil source. Abiotic stresses cause a significant decline in its production. The WUSCHEL-related Homeobox (WOX) genes have been involved in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, the functions of WOX genes are less known in cotton. This study identified 39, 40, 21, and 20 WOX genes in Gossypium hirsutum, Gossypium barbadense, Gossypium arboreum, and Gossypium raimondii, respectively. All the WOX genes in four cotton species could be classified into three clades, which is consistent with previous research. The gene structure and conserved domain of all WOX genes were analyzed. The expressions of WOX genes in germinating hypocotyls and callus were characterized, and it was found that most genes were up-regulated. One candidate gene Gh_ A01G127500 was selected to perform the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) experiment, and it was found that the growth of the silenced plant (pCLCrVA: GhWOX4_A01) was significantly inhibited compared with the wild type. In the silenced plant, there is an increase in antioxidant activities and a decrease in oxidant activities compared with the control plant. In physiological analysis, the relative electrolyte leakage level and the excised leaf water loss of the infected plant were increased. Still, both the relative leaf water content and the chlorophyll content were decreased. This study proved that WOX genes play important roles in drought stress and callus induction, but more work must be performed to address the molecular functions of WOX genes.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this systematic review was to identify and appraise the existing evidence of role of palliative radiotherapy for locally advanced non-metastatic head and neck cancer. METHODS: A systematic search of the literature was conducted using Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases and relevant references were included. RESULTS: Literature search revealed a wide variation in dose fractionation regimens. Reported outcomes showed high efficacy and low rate of significant side effects, except in studies utilising higher doses of radiotherapy where higher grade toxicities were seen. Reported median overall survival was in the range of 3.3-17 months, but most studies reported median survival of around 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: The choice of palliative radiotherapy varies significantly. This is in contrast to regimens of curative radiotherapy for locally advanced head and neck cancer, which are well standardised. Given the reported relatively short overall survival of this patient group, an ideal treatment should be of the shortest possible duration whilst ensuring effective palliation and minimal side effects. Future well designed trials are needed to evaluate quality of life and duration of side effects in addition to survival and severity of toxicities in this group of patients.
