RESUMO

Rice False Smut (RFS) caused by Ustilaginoidea virens is a major emerging disease of rice due to expanded area of hybrid rice cultivars, increasing use of nitrogenous fertilizers and change in climate. Due to the increasing incidences of this disease across the globe, there is a pressing need to develop techniques for false smut management. The application of fungicides with high efficiency, low toxicity, and low residue is currently the best option to control RFS. Therefore, current research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of fungicides to manage RFS. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized block design with three replications of seven treatments at RFS-prone subtropical hills of Nepal in the main rice growing season, during 2020 and 2021. The fungicides include trifloxystrobin 25 % + tebuconazole 50 %, chlorothalonil 75 %, carbendazim 12 % + mancozeb 63 %, propiconazole 25 %, azoxystrobin 50 %, carbendazim 50 % and untreated control. Fungicides were applied as two foliar sprays, one at booting and the other at flowering. Fungicide spray significantly increased number of tillers per plant (P ≤ 0.01) and reduced the number of false smut-infected tillers per plant (P ≤ 0.05), false smut severity (P ≤ 0.05), and incidence (P ≤ 0.05). False smut incidence percentages were significantly reduced by all the fungicides except mancozeb + carbendazim compared to the non-treated control. The reduction in RFS incidence was 70 % in propiconazole, 71 % in trifloxystrobin + tebuconazole sprayed plots compared to the non-treated control plots. Thus, the application of suitable fungicide at the appropriate stage would give the satisfactory suppression of RFS in a farmers' field in Nepal.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: More than 250 loci have been identified by genome-wide scans for type 2 diabetes in different populations. South Asians have a very different manifestation of the diseases and hence role of these loci need to be investigated among Indians with huge burden of cardio-metabolic disorders. Thus the present study aims to validate the recently identified GWAS loci in an endogamous caste population in North India. METHODS: 219 T2D cases and 184 controls were recruited from hospitals and genotyped for 15 GWAS loci of T2D. Regression models adjusted for covariates were run to examine the association for T2D and fasting glucose levels. RESULTS: We validated three variants for T2D namely, rs11634397 at ZFAND6 (OR = 3.05, 95%CI = 1.02-9.19, p = 0.047) and rs8042680 at PRC1 (OR = 3.67, 95%CI = 1.13-11.93, p = 0.031) showing higher risk and rs6813195 at TMEM154 (OR = 0.28, 95%CI = 0.09-0.90, p = 0.033) showing protective effect. The combined risk of 9 directionally consistent variants was also found to be significantly associated with T2D (OR = 1.91, 95%CI = 1.18-3.08, p = 0.008). One variant rs10842994 at KLHDC5 was validated for 9.15mg/dl decreased fasting glucose levels (SE = -17.25-1.05, p = 0.027). CONCLUSION: We confirm the role of ZFAND6, PRC1 and TMEM154 in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes among Indians. More efforts are needed with larger sample sizes to validate the diabetes GWAS loci in South Asian populations for wider applicability.

RESUMO

The glymphatic system is a newly discovered waste-clearing system that is analogous to the lymphatic system in our central nervous system. Furthermore, disruption in the glymphatic system has also been associated with many neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease), traumatic brain injury, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Thus, understanding the function and structure of this system can play a key role in researching the progression and prognoses of these diseases. In this review article, we discuss the current ways to map the glymphatic system and address the advances being made in preclinical mapping. As mentioned, the concept of the glymphatic system is relatively new, and thus, more research needs to be conducted in order to therapeutically intervene via this system.

RESUMO

The aim of the current study was to evaluate and compare the relationship of mindfulness with self-efficacy and self-esteem. The study has also investigated the difference in mindfulness levels across five dimensions: observing, describing, acting with awareness, non-judging of inner experiences and non-reactivity to inner experience between males and females and between young adults and middle-aged adults who belong to the Indian population. There was a total of 146 participants (F = 80, M = 66), 84 in the young adult group (20-40 years) and 62 participants in the middle adult group (41-65 years). Pearson correlation showed statistically significant (p < 0.01) moderate positive correlation between all the five dimensions of mindfulness and self-esteem; while self-efficacy had significant (p < 0.01) moderate positive correlation with all the dimensions of mindfulness except for non-judging of inner experiences. Multiple linear regression (MLR) with self-esteem as outcome variable showed model fitness of 51% (p < 0.01) with acting with awareness, non-reactivity to inner experience, non-judging of inner experiences and describing as predictive variables. With self-efficacy as outcome variable, MLR showed model fitness of 40% (p < 0.01) with non-reactivity to inner experiences, acting with awareness, observing and describing as predicting variables. Females were found to be significantly higher in acting with awareness and observing dimensions of mindfulness compared to males. Middle adults were found to be significantly higher only in the non-judging of inner experiences dimension as compared to early adults. Importance of mindfulness in improving self-concept has been established in western world. The present study, by exploring the relationship between mindfulness and self-variables in Indian population, highlights the probable positive outcomes of mindfulness enhancing techniques on self-esteem and self-efficacy of individuals, and therefore on the quality of life.
