RESUMO

Horseshoe crabs are extant marine euchelicerates that have a fossil record extending well into the Palaeozoic. Extreme xiphosurid morphologies arose during this evolutionary history. These forms often reflected the occupation of freshwater or marginal conditions. This is particularly the case for Austrolimulidae-a xiphosurid family that has recently been subject to thorough taxonomic examination. Expanding the austrolimulid record, we present new material from the Olenekian-aged Petropavlovka Formation in European Russia and assign this material to Attenborolimulus superspinosus gen. et sp. nov. A geometric morphometric analysis of 23 horseshoe crab genera illustrates that the new taxon is distinct from limulid and paleolimulid morphologies, supporting the assignment within Austrolimulidae. In considering Triassic austrolimulids, we suggest that the hypertrophy or reduction in exoskeletal sections illustrate how species within the family evolved as opportunistic taxa after the end-Permian extinction.

RESUMO

The Bernaeinae, currently regarded as a subfamily of Aleyrodidae (Szwedo Drohojowska 2016, Drohojowska et al. 2019), is the only extinct subfamily of whiteflies with a fossil record from the Callovian (late Middle Jurassic) to Cenomanian (early Upper Cretaceous). Currently, it comprises seven species in six genera (Schlee 1970, Shcherbakov 2000, Drohojowska et al. 2019, Chen et al. 2020)-Bernaea neocomica Schlee, 1970; Burmoselis evelynae Shcherbakov, 2000; Heidea cretacica Schlee, 1970 (see comment below); Juleyrodes Shcherbakov, 2000 (J. gilli Shcherbakov, 2000, J. visnyai Shcherbakov, 2000), Paraburmoselis kachinensis Chen, Zhang, Wang et Zheng, 2020 and Sinicoselis weberi Drohojowska, Wegierek, Evans et Huang, 2019. Heidea by mistake was figured in Drohojowska Szwedo (2011a, p. 192, Fig. 23) in Aleyrodinae, but no taxonomic decisions were taken regarding this fossil. Later, in the checklist of fossil Aleyrodidae, Szwedo Drohojowska (2016: supplement p. 6), listed Heidea in Bernaeinae. This statement was not noted by Chen et al. (2020) listing again Heidea in Aleyrodinae referring to erroneous placement on the figure in Drohojowska Szwedo (2011a).

RESUMO

The first find of Trichoceridae in the Mesozoic of Gondwana and in Cretaceous ambers worldwide, Ewaurista pusilla gen. et sp. nov. is separated into Ewauristinae subfam. nov. demonstrating some venational traits in common with Limoniidae and a peculiar sexual dimorphism. The diagnosis of Trichoceridae is emended, and relationships of the family are discussed.

RESUMO

The origin of Hymenoptera remains controversial. Currently accepted hypotheses consider Hymenoptera as the first side branch of Holometabola or sister-group to Mecopteroidea. In contrast, fossils confirm the idea of Martynov that Hymenoptera are related to Megaloptera and Raphidioptera. Hymenoptera have descended along with Raphidioptera from the earliest Megaloptera, the Permian Parasialidae. A related new family, minute Nanosialidae from the Permian of Russia is supposedly ancestral to Raphidioptera. The fusion of the third ovipositor valvulae is shown to be not a synapomorphy of Neuropteroidea. Parasialids and nanosialids bridge the gap between megalopterans and snakeflies; all can be classified into a single order, Panmegaloptera nom. n., including a new suborder Siarapha for Nanosialidae. The earliest megalopterans and their descendants, Raphidioptera and Hymenoptera, have passed through a "miniaturization bottleneck", likely a common macroevolutionary mechanism.

RESUMO

Alicodoxa rasnitsynigen. et sp. n. (Dictyopharinae: Orthopagini) is described based on a nymph from Rovno amber; it also occurs in Baltic amber. A small additional wax plate dorsal to the large wax plate of abdominal tergites VI-VIII is first reported in this and other genera of Dictyopharidae. A lectotype is designated for Pseudophana reticulata Germar & Berendt, 1856 transferred to Protepiptera (Achilidae): Protepiptera reticulata (Germar & Berendt, 1856), comb. n.
