BACKGROUND: The treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) challenging due to unfulfilled clinical requirements. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of combining transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) with sintilimab and lenvatinib in the treatment of uHCC. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients with uHCC who were treated with a combination of TACE, sintilimab, and lenvatinib between May 2019 and December 2021 at the Chinese PLA General Hospital. Systemic treatment was started 1 week after TACE was performed. Sintilimab was administered intravenously at a dosage of 200 mg every three weeks, and lenvatinib was given orally at dosages of 8 mg or 12 mg daily, contingent upon the weight of the patients. The primary endpoint was the objective response rate (ORR) as per the mRECIST. Secondary endpoints were disease control rate (DCR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and treatment-related adverse events (tr-AEs). RESULTS: A total of 32 patients were enrolled in the study. Among them, 9 patients were classified as Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer-B (BCLC-B), 23 patients were classified as BCLC-C, 14 patients diagnosed with portal vein tumors, and 12 patients were diagnosed with extra hepatic metastases. The ORR and DCR were 75% and 90.6% respectively, with 4 patients exhibiting (12.5%) complete response, 20 patients exhibiting (62.5%) partial response, 5 patients exhibiting (15.6%) stable disease, and 3 patients exhibiting (9.4%) progressive disease. With a median follow-up time of 19.6 months, the median PFS was 9.9 months, and the median OS was 33.3 months. A total of 31 patients experienced different degrees of tr-AEs, of which 2 were grade 3 tr-AEs. CONCLUSION: The combination therapy of TACE, sintilimab, and lenvatinib demonstrates satisfactory efficacy in the treatment of uHCC with manageable tr-AEs.

Constructing a globally consistent high-precision map is essential for the application of mobile robots. Existing optimization-based mapping methods typically constrain robot states in pose space during the graph optimization process, without directly optimizing the structure of the scene, thereby causing the map to be inconsistent. To address the above issues, this paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) LiDAR mapping framework (i.e., BA-CLM) based on LiDAR bundle adjustment (LBA) cost factors. We propose a multivariate LBA cost factor, which is built from a multi-resolution voxel map, to uniformly constrain the robot poses within a submap. The framework proposed in this paper applies the LBA cost factors for both local and global map optimization. Experimental results on several public 3D LiDAR datasets and a self-collected 32-line LiDAR dataset demonstrate that the proposed method achieves accurate trajectory estimation and consistent mapping.

Triethylamine is a common volatile organic compound (VOC) that plays an important role in areas such as organic solvents, chemical industries, dyestuffs, and leather treatments. However, exposure to triethylamine atmosphere can pose a serious threat to human health. In this study, gas-sensing semiconductor materials of LaFeO3 nano materials with different Mo-doping ratios were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The crystal structures, micro morphologies, and surface states of the prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, and XPS, respectively. The gas-sensing tests showed that the Mo doping enhanced the gas-sensing performance of LaFeO3. Especially, the 4% Mo-doped LaFeO3 exhibited the highest response towards triethylamine (TEA) gas, a value approximately 11 times greater than that of pure LaFeO3. Meantime, the 4% Mo-doped LaFeO3 sensor showed a remarkably robust linear correlation between the response and the concentration (R2 = 0.99736). In addition, the selectivity, stability, response/recovery time, and moisture-proof properties were evaluated. Finally, the gas-sensing mechanism is discussed. This study provides an idea for exploring a new type of efficient and low-cost metal-doped LaFeO3 sensor to monitor the concentration of triethylamine gas for the purpose of safeguarding human health and safety.

Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) has demonstrated great potential to reduce the dependence on a large set of annotated data, which is challenging to collect in clinical practice. One of the most important SSL methods is to generate pseudo labels from the unlabeled data using a network model trained with labeled data, which will inevitably introduce false pseudo labels into the training process and potentially jeopardize performance. To address this issue, uncertainty-aware methods have emerged as a promising solution and have gained considerable attention recently. However, current uncertainty-aware methods usually face the dilemma of balancing the additional computational cost, uncertainty estimation accuracy, and theoretical basis in a unified training paradigm. To address this issue, we propose to integrate the Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence (DST) into SSL-based medical image segmentation, dubbed EVidential Inference Learning (EVIL). EVIL performs as a novel consistency regularization-based training paradigm, which enforces consistency on predictions perturbed by two networks with different parameters to enhance generalization Additionally, EVIL provides a theoretically assured solution for precise uncertainty quantification within a single forward pass. By discarding highly unreliable pseudo labels after uncertainty estimation, trustworthy pseudo labels can be generated and incorporated into subsequent model training. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach performs competitively when benchmarked against several state-of-the-art methods on public datasets, i.e., ACDC, MM-WHS, and MonuSeg. Community ecology is built on theories that represent the strength of interactions between species as pairwise links. Higher-order interactions (HOIs) occur when a species changes the pairwise interaction between a focal pair. Recent theoretical work has highlighted the stabilizing role of HOIs for large, simulated communities, yet it remains unclear how important higher-order effects are in real communities. Here, we used experimental communities of aquatic protists to examine the relationship between HOIs and stability (as measured by the persistence of a species in a community). We cultured a focal pair of consumers in the presence of additional competitors and a predator and collected time series data of their abundances. We then fitted competition models with and without HOIs to measure interaction strength between the focal pair across different community compositions. We used survival analysis to measure the persistence of individual species. We found evidence that additional species positively affected persistence of the focal species and that HOIs were present in most of our communities. However, persistence was only linked to HOIs for one of the focal species. Our results vindicate community ecology theory positing that species interactions may deviate from assumptions of pairwise interactions, opening avenues to consider possible consequences for coexistence and stability.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigated cognitive performance and brain function between treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and non- TRD patients to find potential neurobiological markers associated with refractoriness in depression patients. METHODS: Fourteen TRD patients, 26 non-TRD patients and 23 healthy controls (HC) were included in the present study. The neural function of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and cognitive performance among the three group were examined using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during verbal fluency task (VFT). RESULTS: Both TRD and non-TRD groups exhibited significantly worse VFT performance and lower activation of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) changes in the bilateral dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) compared to the HC group. Within the TRD and non-TRD groups, VFT performance was no significant difference, but activation of oxy-Hb changes in dorsomedial PFC (DMPFC) in TRD patients was significantly lower than non-TRD patients. In addition, activation of oxy-Hb changes in right DLPFC were negatively correlated with the severity of depressive symptoms in depression patients. CONCLUSION: Both TRD patients and non-TRD patients exhibited lower oxy-Hb activation in DLPFC. TRD patients exhibit lower oxy- Hb activation in DMPFC than non-TRD patients. fNIRS maybe a useful tool for predict depressive patients with or without treatment resistant.

Background: Repeated transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) could cause ischemia of the tumor tissue and increases production of angiogenic factors in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Lenvatinib can inhibit the expression of angiogenic factors induced by ischemia after TACE and reduce angiogenesis and tumor recurrence. TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy may improve clinical outcomes. There have been few investigations of TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy for the treatment of unresectable HCC. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy for unresectable HCC. Methods: From May 2018 to May 2021, 53 consecutive patients who underwent TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy were retrospectively reviewed. Of these, 30 patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected. Lenvatinib treatment started within 1 or 2 weeks after TACE at a dose of 8 or 12 mg once daily. Treatment response was assessed using dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) according to the modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumor (mRECIST). Blood tests were also performed at every response evaluation. Patients with complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) and stable disease (SD) received continuous lenvatinib therapy, and patients with progressive disease (PD) received repeated TACE. The progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and adverse events (AEs) were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: The median age was 58.5±9.1 years, and 16.7% (5/30) of patients were female. A total of 12 patients were categorized as Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) Stage B and 18 were BCLC Stage C. The mean follow-up time was 15.7 months. The ORR was 76.7% (23/30), and the DCR was 96.7% (29/30). The median PFS was 6.1 months, and the median OS was 20.7 months. The most common lenvatinib-related AE was rash, and the most common TACE-related AE was elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST). No treatment-related mortality was observed. Conclusions: From our findings, TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy may prolong OS and PFS in patients with unresectable HCC, and the side effects are acceptable. The efficacy and safety of the sequential therapy should be confirmed in multiple center randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a large sample and sufficient follow-up period.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has raised extensive concern in healthcare and academia as one of the most prevalent health threats to the elderly. Due to the irreversible nature of AD, early and accurate diagnoses are significant for effective prevention and treatment. However, diverse clinical symptoms and limited neuroimaging accuracy make diagnoses challenging. In this article, we built a brain network for each subject, which assembles several commonly used neuroimaging data simply and reasonably, including structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and amyloid positron emission tomography (PET). Based on some existing research results, we applied statistical methods to analyze (i) the distinct affinity of AD burden on each brain region, (ii) the topological lateralization between left and right hemispheric sub-networks, and (iii) the asymmetry of the AD attacks on the left and right hemispheres. In the light of advances in graph convolutional networks for graph classifications and summarized characteristics of brain networks and AD pathologies, we proposed a regional brain fusion-graph convolutional network (RBF-GCN), which is constructed with an RBF framework mainly, including three sub-modules, namely, hemispheric network generation module, multichannel GCN module, and feature fusion module. In the multichannel GCN module, the improved GCN by our proposed adaptive native node attribute (ANNA) unit embeds within each channel independently. We not only fully verified the effectiveness of the RBF framework and ANNA unit but also achieved competitive results in multiple sets of AD stages' classification tasks using hundreds of experiments over the ADNI clinical dataset.

Background: The efficacy of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) is limited. There are insufficient data on TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy for HCC with PVTT. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy for the treatment of HCC and PVTT. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 12 consecutive patients with HCC and PVTT who underwent TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy between July 2018 and May 2021. Lenvatinib treatment was started 1 week after TACE at a dose of 8 or 12 mg daily depending on the patient weight. Follow-up examinations were performed at 4 week and then every 8 weeks after the first TACE procedure. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR) and adverse events (AEs) were calculated. Survival curves of PFS and OS were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: The median OS and PFS were 16.9 and 6.15 months, respectively. The ORR and DCR were 75% and 91.7%, respectively. The most common lenvatinib-related AE was hypertension (33.3%), and the most common TACE-related AE was elevated liver enzymes (100%). No treatment-related deaths or grade 4 events were observed. Conclusions: TACE-lenvatinib sequential therapy may be safe and well tolerated, and may improve OS and PFS for HCC patients with PVTT. Further randomized controlled trials with larger cohorts are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.

Oregano essential oil (OEO) is an effective natural antibacterial agent, but its antibacterial activity against Vibrio vulnificus has not been widely studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect and germicidal activity of OEO on V. vulnificus and its possible inhibition mechanism. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of OEO against four V. vulnificus strains (ATCC 27562 and three isolates from seafoods) were from 0.06 to 0.15 µL/mL. Compared with untreated bacteria, OEO reduced the concentration of intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), hyperpolarized the cell membrane, increased the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and increased the concentration of intracellular malondialdehyde (MDA), but there was no obvious DNA damage at the OEO test concentration. It was indicated that OEO inactivated V. vulnificus by generating ROS which caused lipid peroxidation of cell membranes, thereby reducing the permeability and integrity of cell membranes and causing morphological changes to cells, but there was no obvious damage to DNA. In addition, OEO could effectively kill V. vulnificus in oysters at 25 °C, and the number of bacteria decreased by 48.2% after 0.09% OEO treatment for 10 h. The good inhibitory effect and bactericidal activity of OEO showed in this study, and the economy and security of OEO make it possible to apply OEO to control V. vulnificus contamination in oysters and other seafoods.

Background: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has many advantages over other neuroimaging modalities for routine measurement of task-dependent cortical activation, but most fNIRS studies of schizophrenia have used letter fluency tasks (LFTs). Further, performances on category fluency tasks (CFTs) and LFTs may be distinct in Chinese patients due to the unique semantic features of Chinese written characters. To identify unique disease biomarkers measurable by fNIRS in Chinese schizophrenia patients, this study compared cortical oxygenated hemoglobin changes ([oxy-Hb]) during a Chinese LFT and CFT between patients and healthy controls. Methods: Inpatients of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University were recruited from Match 2020 to July 2021. The Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) was used to evaluate psychiatric symptoms. Dynamic changes in [oxy-Hb], an indicator of neural activity, were measured during CFT and LFT performance by 52-channel fNIRS. Results: Forty-seven schizophrenia inpatients and 29 healthy controls completed all tests. Schizophrenia patients showed significant cortical activation at 15 channels covering the left hemisphere and 17 channels over the right hemisphere during the CFT. During the LFT, activity was significantly increased at only six channels, all over the left hemisphere (FDR P < 0.05). In healthy controls, significant [oxy-Hb] increases were found at 24 channels over the left hemisphere and 19 channels over the right hemisphere during CFT. While during the LFT, the significant increases were found at 7 channels all over the left hemisphere (FDR P < 0.05). When years of education was included as a covariate, the schizophrenia group demonstrated no significant hypoactivation relative to healthy controls at any channel after FDR correction (FDR P < 0.05) during CFT while demonstrated significant hypoactivation at channel 11 during LFT (FDR P < 0.05). There were no significant associations between PANSS scores and [oxy-Hb] changes after FDR correction (FDR P < 0.05). Conclusions: Left lateralization during CFT was reduced among schizophrenia patients and may be related to the semantic deficit. The Chinese-CFT could be a more sensitive indicator of frontal-temporal dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are frequently comorbid with each other, and both associated with substantial cognitive impairments; however, it is still unclear whether their impairments are neurobiologically similar or distinct. This study aims to investigate the cognitive functions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in patients with MDD and GAD during the verbal fluency task (VFT) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Fifty-two patients with MDD, fifty-one patients with GAD, fifty-two patients with the comorbidity of MDD and GAD (CMG), and forty-seven healthy controls (HC) participated in the study. Significant hypoactivation in the left ventrolateral and the left dorsolateral PFC was common in all patient groups when compared to HCs, suggesting a shared etiology. Furthermore,  MDD patients showed significant hypoactivation at the right frontal pole cortex (FPoC) when compared to HCs and significant hypoactivation at the middle FPoC when compared to the CMG patients. Our work is the first fNIRS study to reveal the shared and unique neurobiological profiles of MDD, GAD and their comorbidity under the same standard experimentation condition, suggesting fNIRS holds promise as an adjutant to assist clinical diagnosis.

Chinese emergency department (ED) staff encountered significant mental stress while fighting the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We sought to investigate the prevalence and associated factors for depressive symptoms among ED staff (including physicians, nurses, allied health, and auxiliary ED staff). A cross-sectional national survey of ED staff who were on duty and participated in combating the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted March 1-15, 2020. A total of 6,588 emergency medical personnel from 1,060 hospitals responded to this survey. A majority of respondents scored above 10 points on the PHQ-9 standardized test, which is associated with depressive symptoms. Those aged 31-45, those working in the COVID-19 isolation unit, and those with relatives ≤ 16 or ≥70 years old at home all had statistically significant associations with scoring >10 points. Depressive symptoms among Chinese emergency medical staff were likely quite common during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and reinforce the importance of targeted ED staff support during future outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that BD patients exhibited impairment when performing a verbal fluency task (VFT) and abnormal prefrontal cortex activation during this task. However, no study has specifically examined whether patients with type II BD demonstrate difficulty in performing VFT and impairments in relevant neural correlates or whether these are related to psychotic symptoms, the present study aimed to examine these issues. METHODS: Forty-nine patients with type II BD (21 patients with psychotic symptoms [BDIIp] and 28 patients without psychotic symptoms [BDIIn]) and 45 matched healthy controls (HCs) participated the study and completed the VFTs, while their brain activity was recorded with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). RESULTS: Both BDIIp and BDIIn patients showed poorer performance on VFTs than HCs. In addition, BDII patients showed lower brain activation than HCs in bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and right frontal pole, these results were mainly driven by BDIIn patients. Moreover, subjective psychotic symptoms were positively significantly correlated with left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation in BDII patients. CONCLUSIONS: Type II BD patients showed significant impairment when performing VFTs and reduced activation in the prefrontal cortex, and subjective psychotic symptoms were associated with brain activation in left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in BDII patients.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar depression (BD) is a unique, severe and prevalent mental illness that shares many similarities in symptoms with unipolar depression (UD). Improving precision of their diagnoses would enhance treatment outcome and prognosis for both conditions. This study aims to provide evidence from functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a potential tool to differentiate UD and BD based on their differences in hemodynamic change in the prefrontal cortex during verbal fluency tasks (VFT). METHODS: We enrolled 179 participants with clinically confirmed diagnoses, including 69 UD patients, 68 BD patients and 42 healthy controls(HC). Every participant was assessed using a 45-channel fNIRS and various clinical scales. FINDINGS: Compared with HC, region-specific fNIR leads show UD patients had significant lower hemodynamic activation in 4 particular pre-frontal regions: 1) the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), 2) orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), 3) bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and 4) left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). In contrast, BD vs. HC comparisons showed only significant lower hemodynamic activation in the LIFG area. Furthermore, compared to BD patients, UD patients showed decreased hemodynamic activation changes in the VLPFC region. CONCLUSION: Our results show significant frontal lobe activation pattern differences between UD and BD groups. fNIRS can be a potential tool to increase diagnostic precision for these conditions. In particular, the VLPFC area holds promise to be a useful site for such differentiation for further investigations.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a recurrent, chronic mental illness. While music therapy has been established as an effective treatment for MDD patients, the effects of this therapy on brain function remain unclear. This research employed near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to explore the effects of music therapy on brain activity in mild or moderate MDD patients and to illustrate the potential mechanism of music therapy. Methods: Fifteen MDD patients and fifteen healthy controls (HC) underwent neuropsychological evaluations and NIRS measurements. All participants were treated with continuous music therapy for 10 days. Subsequently, all individuals were evaluated with neuropsychological assessments and NIRS measurements again. Results: The verbal fluency task (VFT) performances of the participants yielded significantly higher scores after music therapy in terms of vegetables, four-footed animals and fruit blocks. After the music treatment, the NIRS data showed that the mean active oxy-Hb values of channels 21, 23, 19, and 41 were significantly increased in both the MDD and HC groups. The MDD group showed significant activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) after music therapy. The results indicate that music therapy could improve the brain function of MDD patients.

PURPOSE: Bipolar disorder (BD) patients with psychotic symptoms (BDp) worsens prognosis and decreases rates of recovery. The study investigated cognitive performance and brain function between BD patients in depressive episode with and without psychotic symptoms to find potential neurobiological markers associated with psychotic features of BD patients in depressive episode. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-one patients without psychotic symptoms and 29 patients with psychotic symptoms diagnosed with bipolar I disorder with a current depressive episode were included in the present study. The neural function of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and cognitive performance among BDp, BD patients without psychotic symptoms, and 23 healthy controls (HC) were examined using near-infrared spectroscopy during verbal fluency task (VFT). RESULTS: 1) Both the BD groups exhibited significantly worse performance of VFT and lower activation of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) changes in the bilateral ventrolateral PFC compared with the HC group. 2) Within the BD group, VFT performance was not significantly different. 3) The prefrontal activation of oxy-Hb changes in the BDp patients was significantly lower than that in the BD patients without psychotic symptoms in the right dorsolateral PFC. 4) Activation of oxy-Hb changes in right dorsolateral PFC was negatively correlated with the severity of psychotic symptoms in BDp patients. CONCLUSION: The prefrontal function differs between BD patients in depressive episode with or without psychotic symptoms measured with near-infrared spectroscopy.

PURPOSE: Daytime complaints such as memory and attention deficits and failure to accomplish daily tasks are common in insomnia patients. However, objective psychological tests to detect cognitive impairment are equivocal. Neural function associated with cognitive performance may explain the discrepancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the hemodynamic response patterns of patients with chronic insomnia disorder (CID) using the noninvasive and low-cost functional neuroimaging technique of multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in order to identify changes of neural function associated with cognitive performance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four CID patients and twenty-five healthy controls matched for age, right-hand dominance, educational level, and gender were examined during verbal fluency tasks (VFT) using NIRS. A covariance analysis was conducted to analyze differences of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) changes in prefrontal cortex (PFC) between the two groups and reduce the influence of the severity of depression. Pearson correlation coeffcients were calculated to examine the relationship between the oxy-Hb changes, with the severity of insomnia and depressive symptoms assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD). RESULTS: The number of words generated during the VFT in CID groups showed no statistical differences with healthy controls. CID patients showed hypoactivation in the PFC during the cognitive task. In addition, we found that the function of left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) during the VFT was significantly negatively correlated with the PSQI scores and the function of right dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) was significantly negatively correlated with the HAMD scores. CONCLUSION: The present study detected dysfunctions in PFC in spite of intact performance which indicates the role of PFC in the neurophysiological underpinnings. Left OFC function is associated with insomnia symptoms and right DLPFC function is associated with depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common phenomenon. Patients with somatoform pain disorder (SPD) suffer from lasting chronic pain which may cause cognitive impairment. The dysfunction of prefrontal cortex (PFC) may be involved in pain-induced cognition impairment, which is the most important part in regulating of cognitive function. Multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive and low-cost functional neuroimaging technique being used to detect the prefrontal cortex activation during cognitive tasks to demonstrate the relationship between PFC dysfunction and cognition impairment in SPD patients. METHODS: 24 patients with SPD and 24 age-, gender- and education level-matched healthy controls were examined by NIRS of the relative concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) in PFC during verbal fluency task (VFT). All data analysis procedures were accomplished under MATLAB, SPM and SPM-fNIRS which is an SPM12-based software for fNIRS analysis. RESULTS: 1. The number of words generated during the VFT tasks in SPD patients were fewer than healthy controls. 2. The activated areas in SPD patients were smaller than healthy controls. 3. The average activation strength of [oxy-Hb] in SPD patients was much lower than healthy controls. 4. The difference of activation areas between left and right lobe were particularly obvious in SPD patients. CONCLUSION: There are evidences suggested that the markedly dysfunction in PFC especially bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) areas may be involved in the cognitive deficiency in patients with SPD.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) function improves with blepharospasm (BSP) symptom remission using a verbal fluency task and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: Nineteen BSP patients and 9 healthy controls (HCs) matched by gender and education were examined using NIRS. The BSP patients were divided into 2 groups based on the onset or remission of BSP symptoms. A covariance analysis was conducted to analyze the differences among the 3 groups to avoid the influence of different ages. The least significant difference was used to process the post hoc test. RESULTS: The hemoglobin concentration and cerebral blood flow of the bilateral orbitofrontal area (channels 27, 31, 34, 37, and 39) were not significantly different between the BSP remission and HC groups (p > 0.05); however, both groups were significantly increased compared with the BSP onset group (BSP remission group vs. BSP onset group: p = 0.003, p = 0.018, p = 0.013, p = 0.001, and p = 0.011, respectively; BSP remission group vs. BSP onset group: p = 0.037, p = 0.044, p = 0.023, p = 0.016, and p = 0.025, respectively). CONCLUSION: This is the first investigation to control for symptom stages in BSP patients examined via NIRS. Cognitive ability and OFC function improve with BSP symptom remission. Thus, the OFC may be inter-connected with motor and cognitive symptoms in BSP.
