RESUMO
Due to safety concerns associated with ice accumulation, there is a need to develop a durable surface with anti/de-icing properties. Inspired by Gecko skin and Nepenthes, a superhydrophobic photothermal surface (SH-PS) with micro-nano hierarchical structure based on carbon nanotube composites is prepared by one-step laser method. It can be switchable to a slippery photothermal surface (S-PS) by injecting silicone oil. S-PS can effectively delay icing at -20 °C/-30 °C, and maintain excellent dynamic anti-icing capabilities following 28 times supercooled droplet impact (-30 °C). Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, S-PS exhibits high-efficiency photothermal deicing and excellent ice droplet control capabilities. Furthermore, S-PS also exhibits remarkable droplet manipulation capabilities under NIR irradiation, even anti-gravity transport (8°) and programmable track manipulation. Notably, after 20 m abrasion, the S-PS still maintains good performances of anti/de-icing and droplet manipulation after infusing lubricant. All these excellent performances can promote its application in a wider range of fields.
RESUMO
The purpose of this paper is to develop a self-detecting diaphragm integrated with a flexible sensor, which is utilized in an underwater thruster. Resistive strain sensors are easy to manufacture and integrate due to their advantages in reliable stretchability and ductility. Inspired by the structure of neurons, we fabricated resistive flexible sensors using silica gel as the matrix with carbon black and carbon nanotubes as additives. All fabricated sensors demonstrated positive resistance characteristics under 60% strain conditions, with the sensor containing a mass ratio of 9 wt % carbon black and carbon nanotubes exhibiting the best resistance-strain linearity. To verify the anti-interference capability of sensors with silica gel substrates of varying hardness values under changing environmental pressure, we tested the pressure sensitivity of the sensors by altering the hardness of the silica gel. The results indicate that silica gel with the highest hardness value provides the best resistance to environmental pressure interference. To detect the motion and deformation of the internal functional components of the thruster, we combined strain detection with the movement operation function of a silica gel diaphragm, resulting in a new integrated diaphragm with sensor detection capabilities. The integrated diaphragm was evaluated by using a tensile testing machine and an LCR tester. The results demonstrate that the mechanical properties of the diaphragm are stable, exhibiting reliable resistance characteristics and a sensitive response during underwater operation. This research can also be applied to the detection of motion amplitudes of other types of soft robots.
RESUMO
The role of immunoglobulins produced by IL-10-producing regulatory B cells remains unknown. We found that a particular newborn regulatory B cell population (nBreg) negatively regulates the production of immunoglobulin M (IgM) via IL-10 in an autocrine manner, limiting the intensity of the polyreactive antibody response following innate activation. Based on nBreg scRNA-seq signature, we identify these cells and their repertoire in fetal and neonatal intestinal tissues. By characterizing 205 monoclonal antibodies cloned from intestinal nBreg, we show that newborn germline-encoded antibodies display reactivity against bacteria representing six different phyla of the early microbiota. nBreg-derived antibodies can influence the diversity and the cooperation between members of early microbial communities, at least in part by modulating energy metabolism. These results collectively suggest that nBreg populations help facilitate early-life microbiome establishment and shed light on the paradoxical activities of regulatory B cells in early life.

The identification of aviation hazardous winds is crucial and challenging in air traffic management for assuring flight safety, particularly during the take-off and landing phases. Existing criteria are typically tailored for special wind types, and whether there exists a universal feature that can effectively detect diverse types of hazardous winds from radar/lidar observations remains as an open question. Here we propose an interpretable semi-supervised clustering paradigm to solve this problem, where the prior knowledge and probabilistic models of winds are integrated to overcome the bottleneck of scarce labels (pilot reports). Based on this paradigm, a set of high-dimensional hazard features is constructed to effectively identify the occurrence of diverse hazardous winds and assess the intensity metrics. Verification of the paradigm across various scenarios has highlighted its high adaptability to diverse input data and good generalizability to diverse geographical and climate zones.
RESUMO
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Blossom of Citrus aurantium L. var. amara Engl. (CAVA) has been popularly consumed as folk medicine and dietary supplement owing to its various beneficial effects and especially anti-obesity potential. Our previous study predicted that eriodictyol was probably one of the key active compounds of the total flavonoids from blossom of CAVA. However, effects of eriodictyol in anti-obesity were still elusive. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was performed to explore the precise role of eriodictyol in white adipose tissue (WAT) browning and hepatic lipid metabolism, and simultaneously, to verify the impact of eriodictyol on the total flavonoids of CAVA in losing weight. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pancreas lipase assay was conducted and oleic acid-induced HepG2 cells were established to preliminarily detect the lipid-lowering potential of eriodictyol. Then, high fat diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model was established for in vivo studies. The biochemical indicators of mice were tested by commercial kits. The histopathological changes of WAT and liver in mice were tested by H&E staining, Oil Red O staining and Sirius Red staining. Immunohistochemical, Western blot assay, as well as RT-qPCR analysis were further performed. Additionally, molecular docking assay was used to simulate the binding of eriodictyol with potential target proteins. RESULTS: In vitro studies showed that eriodictyol intervention potently inhibited pancreatic lipase activity and reversed hepatic steatosis in oleic acid-induced HepG2 cells. Consistently, long-term medication of eriodictyol also effectively prevented obesity and improved lipid and glucose metabolism in diet-induced obesity mice. Obesity-induced histopathological changes in iWAT, eWAT and BAT, and abnormal expression levels of IL-10, IL-6 and TNF-α in iWAT of DIO mice were also significantly reversed by eriodictyol treatment. Eriodictyol administration significantly and potently promoted browning of iWAT by increasing expression levels of thermogenic marker protein of UCP1, as well as brown adipocyte-specific genes of PGC-1α, SIRT1 and AMPKα1. Further assays revealed that eriodictyol enhanced mitochondrial function, as shown by an increase in compound IV activity and the expression of tricarboxylic acid cycle-related genes. Besides, eriodictyol addition markedly reversed hepatic damages and hepatic inflammation, and enhanced hepatic lipid metabolism in DIO mice, as evidenced by its regulation on p-ACC, CPT1-α, UCP1, PPARα, PGC-1α, SIRT1 and p-AMPKα expression. Molecular docking results further validated that AMPK/SIRT1 pathway was probably the underlying mechanisms by which eriodictyol acted. CONCLUSION: Eriodictyol exhibited significant anti-obesity effect, which was comparable to that of the total flavonoids from blossom of CAVA. These findings furnished theoretical basis for the application of eriodictyol in weight loss.
RESUMO
Liriodendron chinense has been widely utilized in traditional Chinese medicine to treat dispelling wind and dampness and used for alleviating cough and diminishing inflammation. However, the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects of L. chinense leaves and the key active constituents remained elusive. So, we conducted some experiments to support the application of L. chinense in traditional Chinese medicine by investigating the antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory abilities, and to identify the potential key constituents responsible for the activities. The ethanol extract of L. chinense leaves (LCLE) was isolated and extracted, and assays measuring ferric reducing antioxidant power, total reducing power, DPPHâ¢, ABTSâ¢+, and â¢OH were used to assess its in vitro antioxidant capacities. Antimicrobial activities of LCLE were investigated by minimal inhibitory levels, minimum antibacterial concentrations, disc diffusion test, and scanning electron microscope examination. Further, in vivo experiments including macro indicators examination, histopathological examination, and biochemical parameters measurement were conducted to investigate the effects of LCLE on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in mice. LCLE was further isolated and purified through column chromatography, and LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells were constructed to assess the diminished inflammation potential of the identified chemical composites. ABTSâ¢+ and â¢OH radicals were extensively neutralized by the LCLE treatment. LCLE administration also presented broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, especially against Staphylococcus epidermidis by disrupting cell walls. LPS-induced ALI in mice was significantly ameliorated by LCLE intervention, as evidenced by the histological changes in the lung and liver tissues as well as the reductions of nitric oxide (NO), TNF-α, and IL-6 production. Furthermore, three novel compounds including fragransin B2, liriodendritol, and rhamnocitrin were isolated, purified, and identified from LCLE. These three compounds exhibited differential regulation on NO accumulation and IL-10, IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, COX-2, and iNOS mRNA expression in RAW264.7 cells induced by LPS. Fragransin B2 was more effective in inhibiting TNF-α mRNA expression, while rhamnocitrin was more powerful in inhibiting IL-6 mRNA expression. LCLE had significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Fragransin B2, liriodendritol, and rhamnocitrin were probably key active constituents of LCLE, which might act synergistically to treat inflammatory-related disorders. This study provided a valuable view of the healing potential of L. chinense leaves in curing inflammatory diseases.
RESUMO
Water confined within nanochannels with specific functionalities serves as the foundation for a variety of emerging nanofluidic applications. However, the structure and dynamics of the confined liquid are susceptibly influenced by practically hard-to-avoid defects, yet knowledge of this fact remains largely unexplored. Here, using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we elucidate the significant influence of geometric and charge defects on one-dimensional confined water. We show that the two types of defects can both reshape the water density distribution by constraining the translocation of water molecules along the circumferential direction. In addition to structural alterations, collective translocation and rotation of water slabs arise during transportation under external pressure. Below the temperature threshold marking the initiation of liquid-solid transition, the geometric defect retards water diffusion through a pinning effect, while the charge defect induces an anti-freezing effect. The latter is attributed to the electrostatic interaction between the charge defect and water molecules that hinders the formation of a stable hydrogen bond network by disrupting molecular dipole orientation. Consequently, this behavior results in a reduction in the number and lifetime of hydrogen bonds within the phase transition interval. The distinct roles of the two types of defects could be utilized to control the structure and dynamics of confined liquids that may result in distinct functionalities for nanofluidic applications.
RESUMO
Understanding the dynamics of the rumen microbiome is crucial for optimizing ruminal fermentation to improve feed efficiency and addressing concerns regarding antibiotic resistance in the livestock production industry. This study aimed to investigate the adaptive effects of microbiome and the properties of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZy) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in response to dietary protein shifts. Twelve Charolais bulls were randomly divided into two groups based on initial body weight: 1) Treatment (REC), where the animals received a 7 % CP diet in a 4-week restriction period, followed by a 13 % CP diet in a 2-week re-alimentation period; 2) Control (CON), where the animals were fed the 13 % CP diet both in the restriction period and the re-alimentation period. Protein restriction decreased the concentrations of acetate, propionate, isovalerate, glutamine, glutamate, and isoleucine (P < 0.05), while protein re-alimentation increased the concentrations of arginine, methionine sulfoxide, lysine, and glutamate (P < 0.05). Protein restriction decreased the relative abundances of Bacteroidota but increased Proteobacteria, with no difference observed after re-alimentation. Protein restriction decreased relative abundances of the genera Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Bifidobacterium. Following protein recovery, Escherichia was enriched in CON, while Pusillibacter was enriched in REC, indicating that distinct microbial adaptations to protein shifts. Protein restriction increased GH97 while reducing GH94 and GT35 compared to CON. Protein restriction decreased abundances of KO genes involved in VFA production pathways, while they were recovered in the re-alimentation period. Protein restriction reduced tet(W/32/O) abundances but increased those of tet(X), nimJ, and rpoB2. Following protein re-alimentation, there was a decrease in ErmQ and tet(W/N/W), and an increase in Mef(En2) compared to CON, highlighting the impact of dietary protein on the distribution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Overall, comprehensive metagenomic analysis reveals the dynamic adaptability of the microbiome in response to dietary shifts, indicating its capacity to modulate carbohydrate metabolism and ARGs in response to protein availability.

Suicide is a global public health challenge, yet considerable uncertainty remains regarding the associations of both behaviour-related and physiological factors with suicide attempts (SA). Here we first estimated polygenic risk scores (PRS) for SA in 334,706 UK Biobank participants and conducted phenome-wide association analyses considering 2,291 factors. We identified 246 (63.07%) behaviour-related and 200 (10.41%, encompassing neuroimaging, blood and metabolic biomarkers, and proteins) physiological factors significantly associated with SA-PRS, with robust associations observed in lifestyle factors and mental health. Further case-control analyses involving 3,558 SA cases and 149,976 controls mirrored behaviour-related associations observed with SA-PRS. Moreover, Mendelian randomization analyses supported a potential causal effect of liability to 58 factors on SA, such as age at first intercourse, neuroticism, smoking, overall health rating and depression. Notably, machine-learning classification models based on behaviour-related factors exhibited high discriminative accuracy in distinguishing those with and without SA (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.909 ± 0.006). This study provides comprehensive insights into diverse risk factors for SA, shedding light on potential avenues for targeted prevention and intervention strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Immune factors are important antecedents in the pathophysiology of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). However, studies on the peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets changes in NEC patients among different Bell stages and in patients requiring surgery are scarce. METHODS: 34 infants with NEC and 33 age-matched controls were included. Peripheral blood was collected within 48 h after NEC diagnosis. Peripheral blood B and T lymphocytes subsets were detected by 12-color flow cytometry. Cell ratios were calculated, and their relationship to disease severity and their roles as indicators for surgery were assessed. RESULTS: NEC patients showed elevated percentages of unSwB cells (CD27+IgD+ unswitched memory/activated B cells)/B cells, SwB cells (CD27+IgD-switched memory B cells)/B cells, CD8+ T (CD3+CD8+ T cells)/T cells, Tem (CD45RA-CCR7-effector memory T cells)/CD4+ T cells, Tem/CD8+ T cells and decreased Bn (CD27-IgD+ naïve B cells)/B cells, CD4+T (CD3+CD4+ T cells)/T cells, CD45RA+ CCR7+ naïve T cells (CD45RA+CCR7+ naïve T cells)/CD8+T cells. Compared to NEC patients at BELL stage I + II, patients at BELL stage III showed increased percentages of SwB cells/B cells, antibody secreting cell (ASC, CD3-CD20-CD27high CD38high ASCs)/B cells and Tem/CD4+ T cells, and decreased percentages of CD45RA+CCR7+ naïve T cells/CD4+ T cells. The Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve analysis showed that the sensitivity of ASC/B cells ratio (0.52%) is 86.67% and the specificity of Tem/CD4+T ratio (5.22%) is 100%, indicating that NEC patients required surgery. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of NEC exhibits codirectional changes with the maturation of B and T lymphocytes, especially CD4+ T cells. The increased ASC/B and Tem/CD4+ T cells could serve as potential indicators for NEC patients requiring surgery.

This study investigates the role of USP47, a deubiquitinating enzyme, in the tumor microenvironment and its impact on antitumor immune responses. Analysis of TCGA database revealed distinct expression patterns of USP47 in various tumor tissues and normal tissues. Prostate adenocarcinoma showed significant downregulation of USP47 compared to normal tissue. Correlation analysis demonstrated a positive association between USP47 expression levels and infiltrating CD8+ T cells, neutrophils, and macrophages, while showing a negative correlation with NKT cells. Furthermore, using Usp47 knockout mice, we observed a slower tumor growth rate and reduced tumor burden. The absence of USP47 led to increased infiltration of immune cells, including neutrophils, macrophages, NK cells, NKT cells, and T cells. Additionally, USP47 deficiency resulted in enhanced activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and altered T cell subsets within the tumor microenvironment. These findings suggest that USP47 plays a critical role in modulating the tumor microenvironment and promoting antitumor immune responses, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target in prostate cancer.

Introduction: Essential tremor (ET) comprises motor and non-motor-related features, whereas the current neuro-pathogenetic basis is still insufficient to explain the etiologies of ET. Although cerebellum-associated circuits have been discovered, the large-scale cerebral network connectivity in ET remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize the ET in terms of functional connectivity as well as network. We hypothesized that the resting-state network (RSN) within cerebrum could be altered in patients with ET. Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to evaluate the inter- and intra-network connectivity as well as the functional activity in ET and normal control. Correlation analysis was performed to explore the relationship between RSN metrics and tremor features. Results: Comparison of inter-network connectivity indicated a decreased connectivity between default mode network and ventral attention network in the ET group (p < 0.05). Differences in functional activity (assessed by amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation, ALFF) were found in several brain regions participating in various RSNs (p < 0.05). The ET group generally has higher degree centrality over normal control. Correlation analysis has revealed that tremor features are associated with inter-network connectivity (|r| = 0.135-0.506), ALFF (|r| = 0.313-0.766), and degree centrality (|r| = 0.523-0.710). Conclusion: Alterations in the cerebral network of ET were detected by using resting-state fMRI, demonstrating a potentially useful approach to explore the cerebral alterations in ET.

Background: Spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP) is one of the most serious surgical bowel conditions affecting preterm infants. There are limited data on the mortality and morbidities of very preterm infants [VPIs, <32 weeks' gestational age (GA)] with SIP in China. The study aimed to describe the prevalence, treatment, and outcomes of SIP among VPIs in China. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included all infants born at 24+0-31+6 weeks GA from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2020, and admitted within seven days after birth to the neonatal intensive care units in the Chinese Neonatal Network. The primary outcome was survival without major morbidities. The association between SIP and neonatal outcomes was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression controlling for possible confounders. Results: Out of the 15,814 enrolled infants, 150 (1.0%) developed SIP with a median onset age of four (IQR 2-6) days. Infants with GA 24+0-25+6 weeks had the highest incidence of SIP (13/532, 2.4%), followed by those with GA 26+0-27+6 weeks (22/2,005, 1.1%), 28+0-29+6 weeks (44/5,269, 0.8%) and 30+0-31+6 weeks (71/8,008, 0.9%). Ten SIP cases were lost to follow-up with unknown survival status and 41 (29.3%) of the remaining 140 infants with SIP died during hospitalization. Only 29.3% of infants with SIP survived without major morbidities, significantly lower than those without SIP (59.2%; P<0.01). Multivariate analysis revealed SIP was associated with a higher risk of overall death (adjusted OR 3.36; 95% CI: 1.85 to 6.08), late-onset sepsis (adjusted OR 2.10; 95% CI: 1.02 to 4.31), and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (adjusted OR 2.49; 95% CI: 1.44 to 4.30). Among all infants with SIP, 28 (18.7%) did not receive any surgical intervention. Laparotomy was provided to 113 (92.6%) of the remaining 122 infants, solely (84/122, 68.9%) or following peritoneal drainage (29/122, 23.8%), while nine (7.4%) infants underwent peritoneal drainage only. Conclusions: Around 1% of VPIs in China developed SIP, associated with increased risk of mortality and morbidities. Over 90% of VPIs with SIP underwent laparotomy as initial or subsequent surgical treatment. Effective and evidence-based strategies are needed for the prevention and management of SIP.
RESUMO
Adenoviruses are efficient and safe vectors for delivering target antigens and adenovirus-based vaccines have been used against a wide variety of pathogens, including tuberculosis and COVID-19. Cost-effective and scalable biomanufacturing processes are critical for the commercialization of adenovirus-vectored vaccines. Adenoviral vectors are commonly produced through the infection of batch cultures at low cell density cultures, mostly because infections at high cell densities result in reduced cell-specific virus productivity and does not improve volumetric productivity. In this study, we have investigated the feasibility of improving the volumetric productivity by infecting fed-batch cultures at high cell densities. Four commercial and one in-house developed serum-free media were first tested for supporting growth of HEK 293 cells and production of adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) in batch culture. Two best media were then selected for development of fed-batch culture to improve cell growth and virus productivity. A maximum viable cell density up to 16 × 106 cells/mL was achieved in shake flask fed-batch cultures using the selected media and commercial or in-house developed feeds. The volumetric virus productivity was improved by up to six folds, reaching 3.0 × 1010 total viral particles/mL in the fed-batch culture cultivated with the media and feeds developed in house and infected at a cell density of 5 × 106 cells/mL. Additional rounds of optimization of media and feed were required to maintain the improved titer when the fed-batch culture was scaled up in a bench scale (3 L) bioreactor. Overall, the results suggested that fed-batch culture is a simple and feasible process to significantly improve the volumetric productivity of Ad5 through optimization and balance of nutrients in culture media and feeds.
RESUMO
Instead of the canonical Grotthuss mechanism, we show that a knock-on proton transport process is preferred between organic functional groups (e.g., -COOH and -OH) and adjacent water molecules in biological proton channel and synthetic nanopores through comprehensive quantum and classical molecular dynamics simulations. The knock-on process is accomplished by the switching of covalent OâH bonds of the functional group under externally applied electric fields. The proton transport through the synthetic nanopore exhibits nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, suggesting an unprecedented proton Coulomb blockade effect. These findings not only enhance the understanding of proton transport in nanoconfined systems but also pave the way for the design of a variety of proton-based nanofluidic devices.
RESUMO
The separation of xylene isomers is of vital importance in chemical industry but remains challenging due to their similar structure and overlapping physiochemical properties. Membrane-based separations using the zeolite MFI, graphene oxide, and metal-organic frameworks have been intensively studied for this application, but the performance is limited by the well-known rule that the filtrate permeance scales inversely with the membrane thickness. We propose a novel membrane design that is capable of breaking this rule, based on an array of recently discovered zeolite nanotubes. Each zeolite nanotube possesses a 3.6-nm-wide central channel, connecting to dense, uniform 0.8-nm-wide holes on its wall that act as selective pores. Comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations show that this membrane exhibits permeance exceeding current state-of-the-art membranes by at least an order of magnitude while simultaneously maintaining an acceptable selectivity. In particular, a thicker membrane featuring longer zeolite nanotubes exhibits a higher permeance due to the presence of more selective pores. The proposed membrane design is expected to be broadly applied to other gas separations and even desalination as long as zeolitic nanotubes with customized pores are available.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Liriope spicata Lour., a species listed in the catalogue of 'Medicinal and Edible Homologous Species', is traditionally used for the treatment of fatigue, restlessness, insomnia and constipation. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study is aimed to evaluate the sedative and hypnotic effect of the saponins from a natural plant L. spicata Lour. in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The total saponin (LSTS) and purified saponin (LSPS) were extracted from L. spicata, followed by a thorough analysis of their major components using the HPLC-MS. Subsequently, the therapeutic efficacy of LSTS and LSPS was evaluated by the improvement of anxiety and depression behaviors of the PCPA-induced mice. RESULTS: LSTS and LSPS exhibited similar saponin compositions but differ in their composition ratios, with liriopesides-type saponins accounting for a larger proportion in LSTS. Studies demonstrated that both LSTS and LSPS can extend sleep duration and immobility time, while reducing sleep latency in PCPA-induced mice. However, there was no significant difference in weight change among the various mice groups. Elisa results indicated that the LSTS and LSPS could decrease levels of NE, DA, IL-6, and elevate the levels of 5-HT, NO, PGD2 and TNF-α in mice plasma. LSTS enhanced the expression of neurotransmitter receptors, while LSPS exhibited a more pronounced effect in regulating the expression of inflammatory factors. In conclusion, the saponins derived from L. spicata might hold promise as ingredients for developing health foods with sedative and hypnotic effects, potentially related to the modulation of serotonergic and GABAAergic neuron expression, as well as immunomodulatory process.

Background: A congenital duodenal diaphragm (CDD) is a rare cause of duodenal obstruction in infants and children. The traditional approach to treatment has been surgical intervention either with excision and duodenoplasty or with bypass through a duodenoduodenostomy, which is invasive and carries the risk of anastomotic leakage. Aims: To summarize the key points of differential diagnosis and treatment of a CDD under gastroscopy and to evaluate its efficacy and safety. Methods: The clinical data of patients with a duodenal obstruction diagnosed and treated by gastroscopy in our hospital between January 2019 and December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The gastroscopic features of the CDD were summarized. The clinical outcomes of patients with CDD treated by gastroscopy were collected and investigated. Results: A total of 13 children with a duodenal obstruction underwent a gastroscopic examination and/or treatment, and of these, 10 were diagnosed as having a CDD and 3 were finally diagnosed as having an annular pancreas. A dome-shaped structure during inspiration (9/10) and a guidewire that could be inserted through the opening into the distal lumen (6/10) were the gastroscopic features of the CDD, while the annular pancreas had none of these features. The 10 patients, 4 men and 6 women with the CDD, were treated through endoscopic diaphragmotomy and dilation. The age and weight at operation was 15 days to 7 years (M: 2.25 years) and 2.85-22â kg (M: 13.6â kg), respectively. A total of 11 endoscopic operations were performed in the 10 patients. The time of single operation was 15-55â min (M: 38â min). The patients did not experience complications such as bleeding, pneumoperitoneum, and duodenal papilla injury during the operation. Feeding was started 12-24â h after surgery, and the patients were discharged 2-10 days (M: 7 days) postoperatively. The patients were followed up for 3-36 months (M: 17 months), and none of them had a recurrence of vomiting. However, three showed a recurrence of stenosis in upper gastrointestinal imaging, one of whom underwent a partial diaphragm resection again 2 months after the primary treatment. Conclusions: A CDD can be confirmed by endoscopy based on its characteristic features. Endoscopic diaphragmotomy and balloon dilation are safe and effective, which can be a new option for minimally invasive treatment of a CDD.
