RESUMO

Objectives  This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and the impact of various contributing factors among undergraduate healthcare students in the region of Taif, Saudi Arabia. Methods A total of 100 undergraduate students were recruited from both the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry at Taif University, Taif, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected on demographic parameters and the Helkimo's index (anamnestic {Ai} and clinical dysfunction {Di} component) using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire, as well as clinical examinations.  Results A significantly high prevalence (97%) of TMDs was observed among the sampled students, with most of them (44.0%) experiencing severe symptoms that might negatively impact their quality of life. On clinical examinations, most of the students (75.0%) showed signs of mild clinical dysfunction, which might indicate an early stage of TMD. Moreover, factors that include older age, majoring in "dentistry" studies, being allergic, having oral habits, poor mental health, and previous COVID-19 infections were found to be significantly associated with TMDs. Conclusion The findings indicate a relatively high TMD prevalence among the sampled undergraduate healthcare students, especially those studying "dentistry". Curriculum modifications, coupled with more awareness and education, are recommended to achieve early diagnosis and help in reducing the incidence of TMD among this population.

RESUMO

Supercritical fluids (SCFs) can be used to prepare drugs nanoparticles with improved solubility. SCFs have shown superior advantages in pharmaceutical industry as an environmentally friendly alternative to toxic/harmful organic solvents. They possess gas-like transport characteristics and liquid-like solvation power for solutes. Evaluation of chemotherapeutic drugs' solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) has been recently an attractive subject for developing this method in pharmaceutical sector. To reach this purpose, the utilization of accurate models is of great necessity to estimate experimental-based solubility data. In this paper, the authors tried to employ machine learning (ML) approaches to estimate the solubility of Letrozole (LET) drug as chemotherapeutic agent and correlate its values in wide ranges of temperature and pressure. To do this, PAR (Passive Aggressive Regression), RF (Random Forest), and RBF-SVM are the models used (Support Vector Machine with RBF kernel). These models optimized in terms of their hyper-parameters using GA algorithm. The optimized PAR, RF, RBF-SVM models obtained coefficients of determination (R-squared) of 0.8277, 0.9534, and 0.9947. Also, the MSE error rate of the models are 0.1342, 0.0305, and 0.0045, in the same order. The final result of the evaluations shows the optimized RBF-SVM model as the most appropriate model in this research. The model exhibits a maximum prediction error of 0.1289.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to assess the oral health status among physically disabled Saudi patients. METHODS: Recruitment took place in the Armed Forces Centre for Health Rehabilitation in Taif, Saudi Arabia. 124 patients living with a physical disability were enrolled and divided into three groups: hemiplegia, paraplegia and quadriplegia. Data was collected on demographics and different oral indices, including the Decayed Missing Filled Teeth (DMFT) index, the Mean Decayed Teeth score, the Community Periodontal Index (CPI), the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN), and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S). RESULTS: High DMFT was observed among the hemiplegia group (mean = 22.61; P-value = .008) with no difference in the Mean Decayed Teeth. All groups showed signs of gingivitis in the form of gingival bleeding. The most compromised periodontal health in the form of pockets 6 mm or deeper was found in the hemiplegia group (53.7%; P-value = .001). This was also reflected in the CPITN (39.0%; P-value = .001), indicating the need for complex treatments in the same group. Regarding oral hygiene, all groups showed a "fair" oral hygiene condition (OHI-S < 3.0), with significantly poorer hygiene (mean = 2.49; P-value = .042) and greater debris accumulation (mean = 1.52; P-value = .024) among the quadriplegia group. In the regression analysis, both age and gender had significant effects on some indices, while disability type showed borderline effects. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate poor oral health in these individuals, mainly due to physical limitations, hindering effective self-care practices. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Oral health is a critical aspect in people with physical disabilities, as it is intrinsically linked to overall health and well-being. Recognizing the clinical importance of oral health among physically disabled patients is essential to improve access and affordability of dental care for this vulnerable group of the population.

RESUMO

Chromogenic black dental staining is an extrinsic dental discoloration seen in daily dental practice, especially in children. These stains are commonly seen as black dots or lines along the cervical third of the teeth. They can affect both primary and permanent dentitions. The evidence is contradictory regarding its etiology, with links to different microbial, dietary, and iatrogenic factors. It was suggested that the back discoloration contains traces of insoluble ferric salt due to the interaction between hydrogen sulfide-producing chromogenic bacteria and iron in the saliva or gingival secretions. The current article aims to overview black dental staining in children and present a case report on a pediatric patient.

RESUMO

Only a few studies investigated the link between tobacco smoking-related media and youth smoking in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). This study aimed to assess the influence of both promotional and control messages on cigarette smoking behavior among young Jordanian students. Generalized Linear Mixed Models were analyzed using data from the Irbid Longitudinal Smoking Study that followed a random sample of 2174 students (2008-2011). We examined the associations of media messaging with smoking behavior, as well as intention-to-quit smoking, and intention-to-start smoking, among young adolescents. At baseline, 12.2% and 43.7% of students were exposed to only pro-smoking or only anti-smoking messages, while 41.8% were equally exposed to both. Exposure to anti-smoking messages was associated with lower odds of ever smoking at baseline among girls (AOR = 0.4; 95% CI: 0.2, 0.8). Boys who were exposed to anti-smoking messages were more likely to report an intention to quit, with borderline significance (AOR = 2.0; 95% CI: 0.9, 4.1). The cumulative exposure to anti-smoking messages over time was associated with lower odds of intention to smoke among girls (AOR = 0.5; 95% CI: 0.3, 0.9) but with higher odds among boys (AOR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.0, 3.1). In both sexes, media messaging was not associated with progression of the smoking habit. In conclusion, this comprehensive analysis of both pro- and anti-smoking messages advances our understanding of their role in influencing youths' smoking behaviors, and could guide the development of evidence-based interventions to address adolescent tobacco smoking in Jordan and the EMR.
