BACKGROUND: The chance of coronary artery disease (CAD) is much higher in women who have gone through menopause than in those who have not, owing to hormonal defense against atherosclerosis. More advanced CAD and several comorbidities were observed in postmenopausal women. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of information comparing the angiographic severity of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in premenopausal and postmenopausal women of different ages. This research sought to determine the Friesinger score's use in evaluating the degree of CAD in premenopausal and postmenopausal women with ACS. METHODS: A total of 145 female patients with ACS were included in this cross-sectional observational research. Depending on the stage of menopause, they were categorized into two groups: group I (premenopausal) and group II (postmenopausal). The study examined the differences in clinical data and the severity of coronary angiographic features based on the Friesinger score between the premenopausal and postmenopausal ACS groups. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference (p = 0.001) was found in the mean age of premenopausal ACS patients, which was 41.53 ± 5.45 years, and postmenopausal ACS patients, which was 57.23 ± 7.45 years. Between the premenopausal group (31.4% vs. 17.1%; p = 0.04 and 31.4% vs. 15.7%; p = 0.002) and postmenopausal group (48.6% vs. 20%; p = 0.001), there was a greater prevalence of normal coronary angiography, single-vessel disease, and triple-vessel disease. Comparing the postmenopausal group to the premenopausal group, the high to intermediate Friesinger score (11-15) was found to be considerably higher (2.9% vs. 1.4%; 72.9% vs. 50%; p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Prior to menopause, single-vessel disease and normal coronary angiography were more common, whereas postmenopausal individuals had triple-vessel disease. The postmenopausal group's CAD was found to be more severe than the premenopausal group's according to the Friesinger score used for severity evaluation.

Biochar (BC) and humic acid (HA) are well-documented in metal/metalloid detoxification, but their regulatory role in conferring plant oxidative stress under arsenic (As) stress is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed at investigating the role of BC and HA (0.2 and 0.4 g kg-1 soil) in the detoxification of As (0.25 mM sodium arsenate) toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan75). Arsenic exhibited an increased lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte leakage, and proline content which were 32, 30, 9, and 89% higher compared to control. In addition, the antioxidant defense system of rice consisting of non-enzyme antioxidants (18 and 43% decrease in ascorbate and glutathione content) and enzyme activities (23-50% reduction over control) was decreased as a result of As toxicity. The damaging effect of As was prominent in plant height, biomass acquisition, tiller number, and relative water content. Furthermore, chlorophyll and leaf area also exhibited a decreasing trend due to toxicity. Arsenic exposure also disrupted the glyoxalase system (23 and 33% decrease in glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II activities). However, the application of BC and HA recovered the reactive oxygen species-induced damages in plants, upregulated the effectiveness of the ascorbate-glutathione pool, and accelerated the activities of antioxidant defense and glyoxalase enzymes. These positive roles of BC and HA ultimately resulted in improved plant characteristics with better plant-water status and regulated proline content that conferred As stress tolerance in rice. So, it can be concluded that BC and HA effectively mitigated As-induced physiology and oxidative damage in rice plants. Therefore, BC and HA could be used as potential soil amendments in As-contaminated rice fields.

INTRODUCTION: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in regulating various hallmarks in cancers. Triple-negative (Estrogen receptor, ER; Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, HER2; Progesterone receptor, PR) breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive form of breast cancers with a poor prognosis and no available molecular targeted therapy. METHODS: We reviewed the current literature on the roles of lncRNAs in the pathogenesis, therapy resistance, and prognosis of patients with TBNC. RESULTS: LncRNAs are associated with TNBC pathogenesis, therapy resistance, and prognosis. For example, lncRNAs such as small nucleolar RNA host gene 12 (SNHG12), highly upregulated in liver cancer (HULC) HOX transcript antisense intergenic RNA (HOTAIR), lincRNA-regulator of reprogramming (LincRNA-ROR), etc., are aberrantly expressed in TNBC and are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. LncRNAs act as a decoy, scaffold, or sponge to regulate the expression of genes, miRNAs, and transcription factors associated with pathogenesis and progression of TNBC. Moreover, lncRNAs such as ferritin heavy chain 1 pseudogene 3 (FTH1P3), BMP/OP-responsive gene (BORG) contributes to the therapy resistance property of TNBC through activating ABCB1 (ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1) drug efflux pumps by increasing DNA repair capacity or by inducing signaling pathway involved in therapeutic resistance. CONCLUSION: In this review, we outline the functions of various lncRNAs along with their molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis, therapeutic resistance of TBNC. Also, the prognostic implications of lncRNAs in patients with TNBC is illustrated. Moreover, potential strategies targeting lncRNAs against highly aggressive TNBC is discussed in this review.

Human Nipah virus (NiV) infection is an epidemic-prone disease and since the first recognized outbreak in Bangladesh in 2001, human infections have been detected almost every year. Due to its high case fatality rate and public health importance, a hospital-based Nipah sentinel surveillance was established in Bangladesh to promptly detect Nipah cases and respond to outbreaks at the earliest. The surveillance has been ongoing till present. The hospital-based sentinel surveillance was conducted at ten strategically chosen tertiary care hospitals distributed throughout Bangladesh. The surveillance staff ensured that routine screening, enrollment, data, and specimen collection from suspected Nipah cases were conducted daily. The specimens were then processed and transported to the reference laboratory of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and icddr,b for confirmation of diagnosis through serology and molecular detection. From 2006 to 2021, through this hospital-based surveillance platform, 7,150 individuals were enrolled and tested for Nipah virus. Since 2001, 322 Nipah infections were identified in Bangladesh, 75% of whom were laboratory confirmed cases. Half of the reported cases were primary cases (162/322) having an established history of consuming raw date palm sap (DPS) or tari (fermented date palm sap) and 29% were infected through person-to-person transmission. Since the initiation of surveillance, 68% (218/322) of Nipah cases from Bangladesh have been identified from various parts of the country. Fever, vomiting, headache, fatigue, and increased salivation were the most common symptoms among enrolled Nipah patients. Till 2021, the overall case fatality rate of NiV infection in Bangladesh was 71%. This article emphasizes that the overall epidemiology of Nipah virus infection in Bangladesh has remained consistent throughout the years. This is the only systematic surveillance to detect human NiV infection globally. The findings from this surveillance have contributed to early detection of NiV cases in hospital settings, understanding of Nipah disease epidemiology, and have enabled timely public health interventions for prevention and containment of NiV infection. Although we still have much to learn regarding the transmission dynamics and risk factors of human NiV infection, surveillance has played a significant role in advancing our knowledge in this regard.

BACKGROUND: Solid malignant tumors are abnormal masses of tissue that usually do not contain any cysts or liquid areas. The causation of these tumors is multifactorial, and the disease process differs at different sites. AIM: This study aims to determine the clinicopathological patterns of malignant solid tumors in adult patients admitted into the department of internal medicine of a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2018 and June 2018 at the Department of Medicine, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. We recorded the complete socio-demographic characteristics, clinical patterns, and pathological characteristics of malignant solid tumors in adult patients. RESULTS: A total of 100 patients with confirmed malignant solid tumors were included in our study. The mean age of the patients was 47.5 years (SD: ±4.20); most of them (27%) were between 58 and 67 years of age. Male patients constitute 59% of the total study sample. Most of the patients were of the middle socio-economic class (59%) and most of them (61%) were nonsmokers. Among the patient diagnoses, 19% had lung cancer, 29.27% had breast cancer, and in 14%, lymphoma (tumor arising from the lymphatic system) was the common solid tumor. Lung cancer was found to be the most common form of cancer in males. Additionally, the majority of those diagnosed with lung cancer smoked. Breast cancer was found to be the most common type of cancer in females. CONCLUSION: This study reflects that solid malignant tumors can affect any socio-economic class of people. Based on findings in our study as well as others, prevention efforts should focus on the reduction in tobacco use and the incorporation of other lifestyle changes, such as diet modification and exercise. Additionally, the incorporation of economic factors and how they affect cancer presentation in different contexts is crucial.

Ascophyllum nodosum extract (ANE) is considered as an effective source of biostimulants that have the potential of ameliorating the negative impact of different abiotic stresses in plants. Considering the growth-promoting ability and other regulatory roles of ANE, the present investigation was executed to evaluate the role of ANE in conferring arsenic (As) tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan89). Rice seedlings (35-d-old) were exposed to two doses of sodium arsenate (As1 - 50 mg As kg-1 soil; As2 - 100 mg As kg-1 soil) at 25 days after transplanting through irrigation, whereas only water was applied to the control. Foliar application of 0.1% ANE was also supplemented under control as well as As-stressed conditions at 7 days intervals for 5 times. Arsenic-induced oxidative stress was evident through a sharp increase in lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal, and electrolyte leakage in the As-treated plants. As a consequence, plant growth and biomass, leaf relative water content, as well as yield attributes were reduced noticeably. On the other hand, ANE supplemented plants accumulated enhanced levels of ascorbate and glutathione, their redox balance, and the activities of antioxidant and glyoxalase enzymes viz. ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and activities of glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II, respectively. Furthermore, relative water content, plant growth, yield attributes and yield were increased in the As-treated rice plants with ANE supplementation. The results reflected that foliar spray with ANE alleviated As-induced oxidative stress in rice plants by modulating the antioxidative defense and glyoxalase system.

Ozone (O3) levels on Earth are increasing because of anthropogenic activities and natural processes. Ozone enters plants through the leaves, leading to the overgeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mesophyll and guard cell walls. ROS can damage chloroplast ultrastructure and block photosynthetic electron transport. Ozone can lead to stomatal closure and alter stomatal conductance, thereby hindering carbon dioxide (CO2) fixation. Ozone-induced leaf chlorosis is common. All of these factors lead to a reduction in photosynthesis under O3 stress. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of O3 disrupts plant physiological processes, including water and nutrient uptake, respiration, and translocation of assimilates and metabolites. As a result, plant growth and reproductive performance are negatively affected. Thus, reduction in crop yield and deterioration of crop quality are the greatest effects of O3 stress on plants. Increased rates of hydrogen peroxide accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and ion leakage are the common indicators of oxidative damage in plants exposed to O3 stress. Ozone disrupts the antioxidant defense system of plants by disturbing enzymatic activity and non-enzymatic antioxidant content. Improving photosynthetic pathways, various physiological processes, antioxidant defense, and phytohormone regulation, which can be achieved through various approaches, have been reported as vital strategies for improving O3 stress tolerance in plants. In plants, O3 stress can be mitigated in several ways. However, improvements in crop management practices, CO2 fertilization, using chemical elicitors, nutrient management, and the selection of tolerant crop varieties have been documented to mitigate O3 stress in different plant species. In this review, the responses of O3-exposed plants are summarized, and different mitigation strategies to decrease O3 stress-induced damage and crop losses are discussed. Further research should be conducted to determine methods to mitigate crop loss, enhance plant antioxidant defenses, modify physiological characteristics, and apply protectants.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal women present with more severe coronary artery disease (CAD) in addition to multiple comorbidities. However, there are limited data available to compare the risk factors, clinical characteristics, and angiographic severity of CAD between pre- and postmenopausal women with the acute coronary syndrome (ACS). AIM: This study aimed to assess and compare the severity of CAD in pre- and postmenopausal women with ACS. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the Department of Cardiology of NHFH RI. A total of 140 female patients with ACS were enrolled and then divided into Group I (premenopausal) and Group II (postmenopausal) on the basis of menopause history. Clinical data and coronary angiographic severity were compared between both groups. RESULTS: The mean age of the premenopausal group was 41.53 ± 5.45 years, and that of the postmenopausal group was 57.23 ± 7.45 years. Family history of premature CAD was significantly more common in the premenopausal group than in the postmenopausal group (35(50%) vs. 23(32.9%); p=0.017)). DM and smokeless tobacco were more prevalent in the postmenopausal group (48(68.6%) vs. 28(40%); p=0.001 and 14(20%) vs. 2(2.9%); p=0.002). Atypical presentation was more common in the premenopausal group (21(30%) vs. 9(12.9%); p=0.013). Most of the patients in both groups presented with unstable angina followed by NSTEMI and STEMI. Mean left ventricular ejection fraction was lower in the postmenopausal group than in the premenopausal group (50.71 ± 8.38% vs. 53.74 ± 7.46%; p=0.026). Normal coronary angiogram and single-vessel disease were more prevalent in the premenopausal group (22(31.4%) vs. 12(17.1%); p=0.04) and (22(31.4%) vs. 11(15.7%); p=0.002), whereas triple-vessel disease was more prevalent in the postmenopausal group (34(48.6% vs. 14(20%); p=0.001). The left anterior descending artery was the most commonly involved vessel in the postmenopausal group (67(95.7%) vs. 60(85.7%); p=0.04). Finally, the mean Gensini score was higher in the postmenopausal group than in the premenopausal group (56.1 ± 43.4 vs. 33.5 ± 36.9; p=0.001). CONCLUSION: Family history of premature CAD and atypical presentation were common in premenopausal ACS patients. DM and smokeless tobacco use were more prevalent in the postmenopausal group than in the premenopausal group. Normal coronary angiogram and single-vessel disease were more prevalent in the premenopausal group, and triple-vessel disease was more common in the postmenopausal group. CAD was more severe in the postmenopausal group.

In this report, we study the Yttrium-doped Barium Titanate (Y-BT) Ba1 - xYxTiO3 (with x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 mmol) perovskite ceramics synthesized by sol-gel method. The as-made powder samples were pressed into a pellet shape and subsequently sintered at 1300 °C for 5 h in air. The structural, morphological, electrical, and optical properties of the synthesized samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), impedance analyzer, and UV-Vis-NIR Spectroscopy respectively. The XRD study revealed the formations of single phase tetragonal structure of Barium Titanate (BT) with ∼23-33 nm mean crystallite size. The crystallite size increases initially with Y-doping, found at about 33 nm for x = 0.01, and reduces for increase in Y3+ concentration further. The microstructural study from FESEM depicts the uniform distribution of compact and well-faceted grain growth for Y-BT in contrast with undoped barium titanate. The average grain size (∼0.29-0.78 µm) of the Y-BT decreases with increasing doping concentration. Frequency-dependent impedance analyses show enhanced dielectric properties like dielectric constant, quality factor, and conductivity with low dielectric loss in the presence of Yttrium. The optical bandgap energy (∼2.63-3.72 eV) estimated from UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflection data shows an increasing trend with a higher concentration of yttrium doping.

Recent research has revealed the promising potential of using waste glass (WG) as a binder or inert filler in cement and geopolymer concrete to deliver economic and environmental benefits to the construction sector. However, the outcomes obtained by different research groups are scattered and difficult to compare directly because of isolated process parameters. In this study, the roles and impacts of WG and process parameters on the performance of WG-added cement and geopolymer concrete are critically reviewed. This study reveals that the chemical and mineralogical composition, and particle size of WG, mix proportion, activation, and curing condition of concrete are the most important parameters that affect the dissolution behavior of WG and chemical reactivity between WG and other elements in concrete; consequently, these show impacts on properties of concrete and optimum WG level for various applications. These parameters are required to be optimized based on the guidelines for high pozzolanicity and less alkali-silica reactivity of WG in concrete. This review provides a critical discussion and guidelines on these parameters and the chemistry of WG in cement and geopolymer concrete for best practice and highlights the current challenges with future research directions.

The rapid and early detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections is key to control the current Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The present study was conducted to clinically evaluate a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) kit, Standard Q COVID-19 Ag Test (SD Biosensor®, Republic of Korea), with reference to the standard real-time RT-PCR for detection of COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh. Nasopharyngeal swabs were taken from 900 COVID-19 suspected patients. Among them, 34.11% (n = 307) were diagnosed as COVID-19 cases by RT-PCR assay, of which 85% (n = 261) were also detectable using the RDT. The overall sensitivity and specificity of the RDT compared to RT-PCR were 85.02% and 100%, respectively, regardless of age, sex, and type of SARS-CoV-2 variants. Most of the RT-PCR positive cases (94%) were found within the first five days of disease onset, and the sensitivity of RDT was 85.91% for the same samples. The positive predictive value (PPV) of the RDT was 100%, and the negative predictive value (NPV) was 92.8%. The Cohen's kappa value of 0.882 indicated excellent agreement between the RDT and RT-PCR assays. The findings of this study showed the potential use of SARS-CoV-2 antigen-based RDT to expedite the diagnostic process and onward COVID-19 management in Bangladesh.

This research aims to study the spinnability of pristine PALF and PALF blended cotton using the existing spinning machines. Apron draft ring spinning frame and flyer jute spinning frame were used to produce 100% PALF yarn and the yarns count were found 121 tex and 138 tex separately. Besides, 90:10 and 80:20 cotton-PALF blended 30 tex yarn spun in a cotton spinning system with different twist factors. With both yarns, two samples; 1/1 plain and 3/1 twill fabrics, were fabricated through equal density. For plain and twill fabric, PALF yarn of 121 tex and 138 tex were used in the warp way, respectively and PALF blended cotton yarn of 60 tex was used in the weft way. Through the study, physio-mechanical properties of the samples were explored and FTIR & XRD patterns were analyzed to perform the task for diversified use as an ultimate fiber in industrial and domestic purposes.

Every year, the world is producing around 100 million tons of waste glass (WG), the majority of them are going to landfills that create massive environmental problems. One approach to solve this problem is to transform waste glass into construction materials. Glass is recyclable; however, the melting temperature of the glass is highly dependent on its colour that requires sorting before recycling. To overcome this challenge, many researchers and end-users are using broken glass in concrete either as a binder or aggregates. While significant investigations have done in this area, however, the outcomes of these studies are scattered, and difficult to reach a firm conclusion about the effectiveness of WG in concrete. In this study, the roles of WG and its impact on microstructural and durability properties for both cement and geopolymer concrete are critically reviewed. This review reveals that the amorphous silica in WG effectively participate to the hydration and geopolymerization process and improve concrete microstructural properties. This behaviour of WG help to produce durable concrete against shrinkage, chemical attack, freeze-thaw action, electrical and thermal insulation properties. The optimum replacement volume of binders or natural aggregates and particle size of WG need to be selected carefully to minimise the possible alkali-silica reaction. This review discusses a wide range of parameters for durability properties and challenges associated with WG concrete, which provides necessary guidelines for best practice with future research directions.

BACKGROUND: Syzygium cumini is one of the evidence-based traditional medicinal plant used in the treatment of various ailments. OBJECTIVES: Herein, the antioxidant property and anticancer property of Syzygium cumini against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cells were examined to find effective chemotherapeutics. METHODS: In vitro assays, and phytochemical and chromatographic analyses were used to determine antioxidant properties and chemical constituents of Syzygium cummini Bark Methanolic Extract (SCBME). Functional assays were used to measure the anticancer activity of SCBME. Fluorescence microscopy and RT-PCR were used to examine morphological and molecular changes of EAC cells followed by SCBME treatment. RESULTS: Phytochemical and GC-MS analyses confirmed the presence of compounds with antioxidant and anticancer activities. Accordingly, we have noted a strong antioxidant activity of SCBME with an IC50 value of ~10µg/ml. Importantly, SCBME exerted a dose-dependent anticancer activity with significant inhibition of EAC cell growth (71.08±3.53%; p<0.001), reduction of tumor burden (69.50%; p<0.01) and increase of life span (73.13%; p<0.001) of EAC-bearing mice at 75mg/kg/day. Besides, SCBME restored the blood toxicity towards normal in EAC-bearing mice (p<0.05). DISCUSSION: SCBME treated EAC cells showed apoptotic features under a fluorescence microscope and fragmented DNA in DNA laddering assay. Moreover, up-regulation of the tumor suppressor p53 and pro-apoptotic Bax and down-regulation of NF-κB and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 genes implied induction of apoptosis followed by SCBME treatment. CONCLUSION: The antiproliferative activity of SCBME against EAC cells is likely due to apoptosis, mediated by regulation of p53 and NF-κB signaling. Thus, SCBME can be considered as a useful resource in cancer chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT Objective: To establish the cephalometric (Ceph.) norm by Ceph. for orthognathic surgery (COGS) analysis for Saudi population. Material and Methods: 500 adult Saudi samples (250 males and 250 females) with the age range of 18-30 years old were selected for this study. The selections of samples were based on a normal occlusal relationship, no history of facial trauma and no previous orthodontic treatment. Lateral Ceph. radiographs were tracing by CASSOS software and analyzed by SPSS software according to COGS analysis. Results: Significant differences were showed between the Saudi males and females on most of the Ceph. parameters. The Saudi males had a convex facial profile with chin prominent and more bimaxillary protrusion, upper and lower lip protrusion than the Saudi females. Conclusion: This study evaluated the craniofacial morphological difference between the male and the female population in Saudi Arabia by using COGS analysis. The finding of this study will help for better diagnosis of orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment planning and identify the morphological facial characteristics of Saudi patients.

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of methanol extract of Averrhoa carambolla Linn. leaves (MELA) using DPPH· and ABTS·+ free radical scavenging assays whereas its antineoplastic effect against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) was assed using viable cell count, life span, body weight gain and hematological parameters of experimental mice. Results showed that rich phenolic and flavonoid content of MELA had moderate dose dependent free radical scavenging activity (IC50: 62.0 µg/mL for DPPH· and 6.0 µg/mL for ABTS·+). In vivo antineoplastic assay, MELA significantly (P < 0.05) decreased viable cells and body weight gain, increased the survival time and restored altered hematological profiles of cancer cell bearing mice. Fluorescence microscopic view of EAC cells derived from MELA-treated group showed apoptotic characteristics and this observation was also supported by overexpression of pro-apoptotic genes coding p53 and Bax proteins in treated cancer cells. The anti-apoptotic genes coding Bcl-2 protein was also absent in treated EAC cells as compared with the control. Moreover, phytochemical profiles of MELA as identified by GC/MS analysis are also consistent with its activities.

The idea of establishing a human tissue bank in Bangladesh was started in 1985. However, in 2003, with the active cooperation of international atomic energy agency (IAEA) and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, a tissue bank laboratory was upgraded as a unit for tissue banking and research. Due to increasing demand of allograft, this unit was transformed as an independent institute "Institute of Tissue Banking and Biomaterial Research (ITBBR)" in 2016. This is the only human tissue bank in Bangladesh, which processes human bone and amniotic membrane to provide safe and cost-effective allografts for transplantation. Importantly, banking of human cranial bone as autograft has also started at ITBBR. These processed grafts are sterilized using gamma radiation according to the IAEA Code of Practice for the radiation sterilization of tissues allografts. The amount of grafts produced by the ITBBR from 2007 to 2018 were 120,800 cc of bone chips, 45,420 cm2 of amniotic membranes, 277 vials of de-mineralized bone granules (DMB), 95 pieces of massive bones, and 134 pieces of cranial bones. Overall, 112,748 cc of bone chips, 40,339 cm2 of amniotic membranes, 174 vials of DMB, 44 pieces of massive bones, and 64 pieces of cranial bones were transplanted successfully. Nevertheless, to cope up with the modern advanced concepts of cell and tissue banking for therapeutic purpose, ITBBR is working to set up facilities for skin banking, stem cells banking including amniotic and cord blood derived stem cells and scaffold designing. To ensure the quality, safety, ethical and regulatory issues are sustainable in cell and tissue banking practices, ITBBR always works with the Government of Bangladesh for enhancing the national tissue transplantation programme within the contemporary facilities.

BACKGROUND: A burn wound is one of the most frequent and devastating injuries for patients which requires extensive care. Early treatment of burn wounds improves healing significantly. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to investigate the efficacy of amnion and collagen-based hydrogels on cutaneous burn wound healing in rats with covering membrane. METHODS: We prepared a novel cell free hydrogel comprising human amnion, rabbit collagen, carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt, citric acid, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, glycerin and triethanol amine. The wound covering membrane was developed from rabbit collagen and prawn shell chitosan. Beside swelling ratio, water absorption, equilibrium water content, gel fraction and spreadability analysis, in vitro cytotoxicity and biocompatibility tests were performed for the formulated hydrogels. Following the skin irritation study, second-degree burns were created on the dorsal region of the rats and the gels were applied with/without covering membrane to study the wound contraction and re-epithelialization period. RESULTS: The formulated hydrogels were observed non-cytotoxic and compatible with human blood cells. No erythema and edema were found in skin irritation assay confirming the safety and applicability. Hydrogel consisting in a combination of amnion and collagen demonstrated significantly rapid wound healing, driven by complete re-epithelialization (16.75 ± 0.96 days) and closure by wound contraction (72 ± 3.27%, P < 0.0000009) when wound dressing membrane was used, whereas this gel alone healed about 62.5 ± 4.43% (P < 0.00001) and required 18.75 ± 0.50 days to complete re-epithelialization. Additionally, the gel with covering membrane treated group had maximum average body weight, food and water intake. CONCLUSION: The amnion and collagen-based blended gel offers alternative possibilities to treat skin wounds when covered with film, which could overcome the limitations associated with modern therapeutic products such as high costs, long manufacturing times, complexities, storing, and presence of living biomaterials.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the cephalometric norm for Saudi sample by Ricketts analysis (RA). Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, cephalometric radiographs were taken for 500 samples. The subjects included 250 males and 250 females. The ages of the subjects ranged from 18-30years. The criteria of selection were based on Class I incisor relationship, no skeletal abnormality and no previous orthodontic treatment. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken, traced and digitized by SPSS software, according to RA. An independent t-test was used to test the level of significance between genders. Results: Significant disparities found between Saudi males and females in dental and soft tissue measurements. The result showed that the distal position of the maxillary first molar to pterygoid vertical plane (U6 to Ptv) measurement was highly significantly greater (p<0.001) in Saudi males than females. Lower incisor to A-Pog (L1 to A-Pog) and lower lip to E plane was significantly longer (p<0.05) in Saudi males than females. Other measurements had no significant difference between Saudi males and females. Conclusion: The craniofacial morphology of the Saudi males was different from Saudi females using Ricketts analysis. This study will help the clinicians to diagnosis and treatment planning of orthodontic and orthognathic patients.
