Restricting milk or milk replacer (MR) fed to dairy calves to 10% of body weight at 12.5% total solids (TS) concentration is a common feeding strategy that promotes early weaning and lowers total feed costs for raising young calves. However, this strategy has been associated with inferior performance and compromised welfare. Because a restricted liquid nutrition plan limits calf growth due to limited supply of nutrients, research on increased supply of nutrients from liquid has shown improved growth, health, and welfare of calves. Nutrient supply may be increased by feeding larger amounts of milk or MR averaging 12.5% TS, or by increasing TS above the usual 12.5% TS by increasing MR TS concentration alone (TS+), or by increasing TS concentration and volume simultaneously (TSV+). The objective of this review is to discuss liquid nutrition plans with greater TS concentration in MR or in milk diets, considering the effects of such strategies on performance and digestive tract development before weaning and the future performance of dairy calves. This review will focus on liquid nutrition plans that are based on increased TS concentration (i.e., TS+ or TSV+); therefore, enhanced liquid nutrition plans based only on increased volumes will not be the discussed. Improved growth rates have been observed in calves fed TSV+ programs. However, reduced starter intake preweaning can also have negative effects on dry matter intake, average daily gain, and digestibility postweaning. Feeding a TS+ program may reduce impairment of starter intake and therefore have positive effects on performance, nutrient digestibility, and health. When considering an accelerated nutrition plan with TS+ or TSV+, it is important to consider osmolality of the liquid diet. Further studies are necessary to confirm this hypothesis and the cost-benefit of alternative liquid nutrition plans, as well as the optimal TS concentration of milk or MR fed to dairy calves.

Several studies have demonstrated that the intensity of estrous expression is associated with ovulation, ovarian and uterine function, and fertility, and is dependent on social hierarchy and the housing system used. Data from recent studies involving spontaneous and induced estrus have shown that a greater relative increase and longer estrus (captured by different automated activity monitors; AAM) are both associated with improved pregnancy per artificial insemination (AI; around 10 to 14% increase) and decreased pregnancy losses. Intensity and duration of estrus were surprisingly weakly associated with preovulatory follicle diameter and concentrations of plasma estradiol at estrus, whereas ovulation failure was associated with low estrus intensity. Studies have also shown that the display of estrous behavior near AI was associated with the modification of expression of genes related to the immune system, adhesion molecules, and prostaglandin synthesis in the endometrium. Transcripts in leukocytes and in the conceptus tissue associated with maternal recognition of pregnancy as well as conceptus elongation were all associated with differences in the intensity of estrous expression. Most recently, studies from the United States and Canada have demonstrated that reproductive programs emphasizing detection of estrus using AAM can be successful and comparable to intensive timed AI protocol-based programs that incorporate GnRH and PGF2α treatments. Further, one study concluded that the administration of GnRH at AI for spontaneous estrus events greatly improved pregnancy per AI, but only for cows with reduced intensity of estrous expression, showing the potential to use AAM data as a tool in targeted reproductive programs. Quantitative information from estrus events could be used to improve estrus detection and develop decision-making strategies at the farm level. Future studies in this field should aim to better understand ovarian, conceptus, and endometrial mechanisms associated with either the expression or the intensity of estrus, and to refine the identification of phenotypes related to estrus (relative increase, absolute increase, baseline levels, duration, and repeatability within cow) to improve data usage, estrus detection, and possibly genetic selection.

The objective of this study was to examine the association between increased physical activity at the moment of timed artificial insemination (AI), detected by an automated activity monitor (AAM), and fertility outcomes. This paper also investigated factors affecting estrous expression in general. A total of 1,411 AI events from 1,040 lactating Holstein cows were recorded, averaging 1.3 ± 0.6 (±standard deviation) events per cow. Activity (measured as steps/h) was monitored continuously by a leg-mounted AAM located on the rear leg of the cow. Ovulation was synchronized by a timed AI protocol based on estradiol and progesterone. Ovarian ultrasonography was performed in all cows on d -11 (AI = d 0) and in a subset of cows on d 0 (n = 588) and d 7 (n = 819) to determine the presence of a corpus luteum and follicles. The body condition score (1 to 5 scale) was assessed on d 0 and a blood sample was collected for progesterone measurement on d 7. Using the AAM, an estrus event was determined when the relative increase (RI) in physical activity of the cow exceeded 100% of the baseline activity. The physical activity was classified as strong RI (≥300% RI), moderate RI (100-300% RI), or no estrus (<100% RI). Milk production was measured daily and averaged between d -11 and 0. Pregnancy was diagnosed at 32 and 60 d post-AI and pregnancy losses were calculated. The mean RI at estrus was 328.3 ± 132.1%. Cows with strong RI had greater pregnancy per AI than those with moderate RI and those that did not express estrus (35.1 vs. 27.3 vs. 6.2%). When including only cows that successfully ovulated after timed AI, those that displayed strong intensity RI still had greater pregnancy per AI than those with moderate intensity RI or those that did not express estrus (45.1 vs. 34.8 vs. 6.2%). Cows expressing strong RI at timed AI had greater ovulation rates compared with moderate RI and cows that did not express estrus (94.9 vs. 88.2 vs. 49.5%). Furthermore, pregnancy losses were reduced in cows with strong RI compared with cows expressing moderate RI (13.9 vs. 21.7%). Cows with a strong RI at estrus were more likely to have a corpus luteum at the beginning of the protocol and had greater concentration of progesterone 7 d post-AI. Multiparous cows expressed lower RI compared with primiparous cows. Cows with lower body condition score tended to have decreased RI at estrus. No correlation between estrous expression and pre-ovulatory follicle diameter was observed. Also, no correlation was observed between milk production at AI and RI. In conclusion, strong intensity RI of estrus events at timed AI was associated with improved ovulation rates and pregnancy per AI, and reduced pregnancy losses. These results provide further evidence that measurements of estrous expression can be used to predict fertility at the time of AI and possibly be used as a tool to assist decision making strategies of reproduction programs.

Tick-borne disease is a hemolytic disease complex that causes extensive losses to the dairy industry in tropical regions. Its timely diagnosis is challenging and labor intensive. Our objective was to investigate whether tick-borne disease was associated with changes in ingestive behavior of weaned dairy calves. Weaned calves (n = 35) enrolled at 108 ± 8 d of age were group housed (n = 12, 12, and 11/group) for 4 wk in the experimental pen, which had 12 electronic feed bins and 2 electronic water bins. Data were automatically collected at each feed or water bin visit via radio frequency identification ear tags. Water and total mixed ration were provided ad libitum. Calves were examined weekly for tick-borne disease detection. A disease bout was confirmed if packed cell volume was ≤25% at any exam. Diseased calves received antimicrobial and antipyretic treatment. Data were summarized by day within bin type (feed or water) as intake (kg/d; as-fed basis), frequency of visits (visits/d), and total duration of visits (min/d). Day of detection was set as d 0; a 9-d behavioral screening period for evaluation of behavioral changes was set according to d 0 (d -4 to +4). A within-calf mean was calculated for the healthy period (HP; mean of all days between 2 consecutive negative exams) for each response variable. Data were analyzed as within-calf differences between HP and each day of the behavioral screening period. Tick-borne disease was detected in 12 calves; thus, only data referent to these animals were included in the analyses. Compared with HP, daily feed intake was reduced on d -1, 0, and +1, and daily frequency and total duration of feed bin visits were reduced from d -3 to d +4. Daily feed intake was reduced by 35% on d -1 (3.5 ± 0.4 vs. 5.4 ± 0.5 kg/d for HP), and daily frequency and duration of visits were reduced by 27% (56.3 ± 7.8 vs. 76.7 ± 8.1 visits/d for HP) and 24% (27.0 ± 3.8 vs. 35.4 ± 3.9 min/d for HP) on d -3, respectively. Daily water intake on d 0 (9.1 ± 1.4 kg/d) was lower than at HP (12.9 ± 1.6 kg/d), but other drinking behaviors were not different from healthy means during the screening period. Feeding behavior, but not drinking behavior, was different from HP means before detection at weekly exams. Therefore, feeding behavior could be further explored for the development of algorithms for tick-borne disease detection.

The objective of this study was to assess the impact of mastitis-causing bacteria and somatic cell count (SCC) on pregnancy per embryo transfer (P/ET) in Holstein-Gir crossbred (Girolando) lactating dairy cows. Cows (n = 1397) were subjected to a timed-embryo transfer protocol. Milk samples were collected two days before embryo transfer for SCC and bacteriological culture analyses. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed on days 31 and 66 after timed-embryo transfer. The animals were grouped according to the National Mastitis Council recommendations: Gram-positive environmental (EV+), Gram-negative environmental (EV-), Gram-positive contagious (C+), coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) and control (no bacterial growth). Additional analysis was made by categorizing bacteria based on degree of pathogenicity (Major or Minor). Bacterial growth reduced P/ET (P < .01) at both 31 and 66 days of gestation. The P/ET was lower (P < .05) at 31 days in EV- (30.1%) and EV+ (29.9%) groups and tended (P = .09) to be lower in the C+ group (36.6%) than the control group (44.0%). The P/ET from the Major group at 31 days of gestation was lower (P = .03) compared with the Minor and control groups (32.1 vs 41.1 vs 43.2%, respectively). Cows with SCC > 400,000 cells/mL had lower P/ET (P < .01) than animals with SCC < 200,000 cells/mL at both 31 (30.4% vs 40.8%) and 66 days (24.7% vs 32.2%) of gestation. Pregnancy loss was not different between bacterial isolates and SCC categories. Elevated SCC significantly reduced P/ET, whereas environmental agents and those with Major pathogenicity yielded the greatest reduction in P/ET.

Objectives were to quantify lying behavior (LB) during an estradiol and progesterone-based synchronization protocol, to assess risk factors for ovulation, pregnancy per AI (P/AI), and degree of behavioral change at estrus, and to investigate the associations between estrus LB and walking activity. Holstein cows (43.6 ± 11.0 kg of milk/d) were fitted with leg-mounted accelerometers. Total lying time/d (L_time), bout frequency (bout_N), average lying bout duration, and relative increase in walking activity (ACT%) were evaluated for 1,411 timed artificial insemination events. The day with lowest L_time or bout_N among d -2, -1, and 0 (day of timed artificial insemination) determined the day of behavioral estrus. The variables L_time% and bout_N% represent relative ratios between lowest L_time and baseline (d -7), L_time, and lowest bout_N, and baseline (d -7) bout_N, respectively [e.g., (lowest L_time/baseline L_time) × 100]. Correlation coefficients between L_time% and bout_N% and ACT% were -0.38 and -0.31, respectively. Estrus LB change was considered large if <75% of baseline and small if ≥75% of baseline for both L_time% and bout_N%; average lying bout duration did not change with estrus. Lowest L_time% and bout_N% corresponded to, respectively, 65 ± 21% (mean ± standard deviation; 447 ± 157 min/d) and 65 ± 24% (8.5 ± 4.0 bouts/d) of baseline. The change in L_time% at estrus was smaller when cows had milk yield above average; the change in bout_N% was smaller among multiparous cows and for estrus occurring in the colder season. Likelihood of ovulation was greater when there was larger change in L_time% [odds ratio = 4.9; ovulation rate = 93 (large change) and 76% (small change)], as well as when a corpus luteum was present at start of protocol (odds ratio = 3.6; in the model with L_time%). Likelihood of pregnancy at d 32 was 1.6 times greater for estrus with large change in LB [L_time% or bout_N%; P/AI = 34% (large change in L_time%) and 26% (small change in L_time%)]. Among estrus events with ACT% ≥300% (high intensity), classification by small or large L_time% did not influence P/AI at 32 d. The magnitude of LB change at estrus and its association with fertility suggest potential application toward improved use of activity monitors (e.g., increased estrus detection, fertility prediction). The contribution of LB to accuracy of estrus detection when physical activity is known remains to be addressed. The relationship between intensity of estrus expression and fertility requires further investigations of its physiological rationale and on-farm applications.

The relationship between plasma estradiol concentration at time of examination and prevalence of uterine disorders, agreement among methods, and associations of diagnosis with pregnancy hazard and milk yield was studied in 268 Holstein cows examined at 30±3 (exam 1) and 44±3 d in milk (DIM; exam 2). Purulent vaginal discharge was sampled using 2 methods: gloved hand and Metricheck (Simcro, Hamilton, New Zealand; PVD; score ≥3). Percentage of polymorphonuclear leukocytes was determined by endometrial cytology (CYTO; exam 1: ≥18%, exam 2: ≥10%); diameter of uterine horns (UTH; >20 mm), diameter of the inner layer of the cervix (CVX; >20.5 mm), presence of fluid in the uterine lumen (FL), and ovarian structures were evaluated by ultrasonography. A blood sample was collected at each exam for estradiol analysis. Prevalence at exams 1 and 2 was, respectively, 14.2 and 18.5% (PVD), 21.4 and 10.1% (FL), and 40.6 and 50.2% (CYTO). Prevalence of PVD at exam 1 was greater among cows with estradiol ≥2 pg/mL (19.4 vs. 8.2%). Agreement of all methods with CYTO was poor, the greatest being between CYTO and FL (exam 1; kappa=0.19). Agreement between CYTO and PVD, and between CYTO and FL (exam 1; kappa=0.15 and 0.35, respectively) was higher among cows with estradiol ≥2 pg/mL. Likelihood of PVD at exam 1 was greater if cows were positive for CVX [odds ratio (OR)=3.0], FL (OR=2.6) or had estradiol ≥2 pg/mL (OR=2.7). Likelihood of CYTO increased with dystocia (OR=2.3) and FL (OR=2.5). Estradiol did not influence diagnosis at exam 2. Positive FL or CYTO at exam 1 was associated with reductions in milk yield of 59 to 180 kg by 45 DIM. Pregnancy hazard until 250 DIM was reduced by CYTO at exam 1 (hazard ratio=0.74) and by PVD (hazard ratio=0.68) at exam 2. However, FL and CYTO reduced pregnancy hazard only when estradiol was ≥2 pg/mL (exam 1), whereas PVD reduced pregnancy hazard when diagnosed at exam 2 with estradiol <2 pg/mL. Overall, agreement was poor and effects of positive diagnosis differed according to method and DIM at exam. Estradiol concentration influenced prevalence, agreement, likelihood of positive diagnosis, and its effects on days to pregnancy.

Sixteen cows in early lactation were randomly distributed into two groups in order to evaluate the effects of mammary biopsies and increased milking frequency on tissue characteristics, post-biopsy udder health and histology. One group was milked twice a day (2×) starting on the 2nd day after calving, until 28 days in milk (DIM). The other group was milked four times a day (4×) from two to 21 DIM, and twice a day (2×) from 22 to 28 DIM. On days 2, 7, 14, 21, and 28 postpartum, one fragment of secretory tissue was collected from one mammary quarter at a time. Collections were alternated between the four mammary quarters per collection day. A total of 80 mammary tissue samples were collected. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the tissues were conducted by histologic examination. Animal health was assessed by observation of feed intake behavior immediately after biopsy, and weight and body condition score before and one week after biopsy. Udder health was assessed daily from calving to 60 DIM with California Mastitis Test (CMT) and by noting alterations in the milk such as blood, milk clots, blood clots, clinical signs of mastitis. Milk composition and somatic cell count (SCC) were analyzed before and after the biopsies. Milk production was evaluated before biopsy, on the day of biopsy, and after the biopsy. An average of 10 fields at 40× magnification was obtained from each sample. There were no evident changes in mammary morphology as a result of milking two or four times/day at any of the evaluated time points. Biopsy wounds healed rapidly without infection. Intramammary bleeding and CMT alterations were observed in 96% and 75% of the biopsied mammary quarters, respectively. Clinical mastitis was diagnosed in 12% of the biopsied quarters. Different milking frequencies had no effect on the frequency and duration of post-biopsy alterations. Milk production decreased after biopsies done on days 2 for 2× and 4× groups, but it returned to pre-biopsy values within 1 day. Milk composition and SCC were affected transiently. Increased milking frequency did not influence udder health. Post-biopsy recovery was rapid and the procedure proved effective without damaging the cows' health.

The objective of this study was to determine risk-factors affecting increase in physical activity during estrus and pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) in lactating dairy cows. Cows were monitored continuously by 2 automated activity monitors [a collar-mounted accelerometer (HT; Heatime, SCR Engineers, Netanya, Israel) and a leg-mounted pedometer (BO; Boumatic Heat-seeker-TX, Boumatic Dairy Equipment, Madison, WI)]. When an increase in activity was detected, body condition score (BCS) and blood samples were collected, ovaries were scanned by ultrasonography, and, if the cow was eligible for breeding, artificial insemination was performed. Milk production and health-related data were recorded throughout the experimental period. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed at 42 ± 7 d of gestation. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation, ANOVA, and logistic regression. A total of 1,099 true events of estrus from 318 lactating Holstein cows were recorded, averaging 3.46 ± 1.1 events per cow. Positive predictive value for estrus episodes detected by the HT and BO systems were 89.6 and 85.5%, respectively. Mean peak activity at estrus (PA) recorded by the HT system was 71.6 ± 20.7 index-value, and 334.3 ± 155.7% relative increase by the BO system. Compared with primiparous, multiparous cows expressed estrus with lower PA (69.3 ± 0.8 vs. 75.9 ± 1.1 index for HT; 323.9 ± 6.0 vs. 354.8 ± 8.48% for BO) and shorter duration (DU; 10.7 ± 0.2 vs. 12.0 ± 0.3 h); DU was measured by HT only. Lower BCS was associated with decreased PA measured by both systems, estrus DU, and P/AI. Peak activity was weakly correlated with milk production on the day of artificial insemination (r = -0.20); however, when categorized into quartiles, the highest-yield cows had lower PA and DU. Follicle diameter was not correlated with PA or DU, but cows with greater concentrations of estradiol had higher PA. Cows with greater PA in both systems had greater P/AI than those with lower PA (36.5 vs. 24.6% for HT, 33.5 vs. 21.4% for BO). In conclusion, measurements of estrus events captured by automated activity monitors are correlated with BCS, parity, and secondary behavior signs related to estrus. Surprisingly, estrus intensity and duration were only weakly correlated with milk production, preovulatory follicle diameter, and concentrations of estradiol at estrus. Cows that had measurements of high-intensity estrus were significantly more fertile than low-intensity estrus.

Holstein heifers (n = 57) were monitored using accelerometers and video observations with the objective of better understanding the behavioral expression of estrus, the variation within and between the heifers, and the possible sources of variation. IceTags recorded walking activity from 7 to 13 months of age. Activity peaks (n = 282) were obtained from a rolling sum of steps within 24-hour periods and validated to be estrus by ovarian ultrasonography. Behavior around activity peak of one estrus for each of 12 heifers was described in detail from video recordings. Baseline behavior was monitored in a corresponding interval 1 week before. Estrus and baseline total steps and steps per hour, estrus relative increase in activity, duration, and interval between episodes were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlations. Effects of category of baseline walking activity, estrus order (pubertal vs. second and greater episodes), season, hour of estrus onset, and number of heifers simultaneously in estrus were evaluated with proc MIXED. Behavioral changes from baseline to estrus were evaluated by a signed-rank test. Estrus total steps varied greatly (4743 ± 1740; range: 837-10,070), as well as the relative increase in activity (290 ± 160%; range: 30%-1190%). Duration of estrus was 14 ± 4 hours, ranging from 4 to 26 hours. The interval between episodes was the trait that varied the least. Pubertal estrus was shorter and had a smaller relative increase in activity than second and greater episodes (P < 0.05). The number of steps during estrus was greater for heifers of high baseline activity (P < 0.01). Estrus episodes occurring in the winter and starting between 4 PM and 3 AM had the greatest relative increase in activity (P < 0.05). The number of heifers simultaneously in estrus did not influence estrus expression (P > 0.05). The behaviors with greatest change from baseline to estrus were chin rest, sniff, back mount, crossover, accept chin rest, and follow, but variation was large. Overall, estrus was apparent in behavioral changes with large variation within and between the heifers. Estrus order, onset hour, season, and baseline walking activity are important factors affecting estrus activity. Therefore, estrus detection tools should account for potential sources of variation. The visual and automated measurements of estrus expression reported in this study reveal possibilities for improved on-farm estrus detection technologies and potential genetic selection for estrus expression.

Two activity monitoring systems-Heatime (SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel) and IceTag (IceRobotics Ltd., Edinburgh, UK)-were compared on their ability to detect and quantify estrus expression. Holstein heifers (n=57) were fitted with Heatime (HT) and IceTag (IT) sensors from 12 mo of age until confirmation of pregnancy. Upon detection of high activity by HT, ovaries were scanned by ultrasound, a blood sample was collected for analysis of plasma estradiol, and signs of estrus (clear vaginal mucus, uterine muscle tone, visual mounting activity, standing to be mounted, or rump showing signs of repeated acceptance of mounts) were recorded. Because only estrus episodes detected by HT (n=111) were further evaluated, only the positive predictive value was measured. Heifers were housed in groups of 24 in a freestall pen. Data were analyzed using Proc CORR and GLM of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). The positive predictive value was 84.7% (94/111) for HT and 98.7% (74/75) for IT. Estrus duration was recorded by HT as 14.3±4.1h [mean ± standard deviation (SD)] and by IT as 15.0±4.0h; duration measurements were correlated (r=0.60). The mean duration difference was 0.74±3.52h. Recordings of onset and end of estrus by IT were 3.5±4.3h and 2.9±4.9h earlier than those by HT. The overlap in duration was 9h. Measurements of estrus intensity were correlated (r=0.63). Peak activity was 77.3±19.5 index value (approximately 7.7 SD from basal activity) on HT. The relative increase in activity measured by IT was 360±170% baseline value. Measurements of intensity and duration from HT were correlated (r=0.64) but those from IT were not (r=0.13). Plasma estradiol concentration (11.2±4.6pg/mL) was not correlated with preovulatory follicle diameter or with duration or intensity of estrus. Diameter of preovulatory follicle (15.7±2.6mm) had no correlation with duration of estrus and was only weakly correlated with intensity measured by either system. Baseline steps/hour was negatively correlated with intensity from both sensors (r=-0.37 and -0.70 for HT and IT). Estrus episodes accompanied by 2 or 3 of the monitored signs of estrus had greater intensity and duration on HT but not on IT. Preovulatory follicle diameter and plasma estradiol concentration did not influence occurrence of estrus signs. Results indicate that both systems identified estrus precisely, with correlated characterization and similar timing. In contrast, relationships with plasma estradiol concentration and signs of estrus require further investigation.

Performance, rumen development, and metabolism of male Holstein calves (n=54) were evaluated according to 1 of 3 liquid feeding strategies: 4 L of milk replacer (MR)/d until 60 d old (4 L-60 d), 6L of MR/d until 29 d old and 4 L/d from 30 to 60 d (6L-29 d/4 L-60 d), or 6L of MR/day until 60 d old (60 d-6L). Water and starter were provided ad libitum. Intakes of MR and starter were monitored daily and body weight (BW) weekly. Blood samples for glucose and insulin concentrations and ruminal content samples for volatile fatty acids and ruminal ammonia concentrations were collected at 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 d of age. Six calves on each treatment were euthanized at 30, 60, and 90 d of age. Empty weights of forestomach and abomasum, papillae length, and mitotic index were measured. Average MR intake/d (expressed as a percent of BW) was greater for calves receiving 6L/d than for those receiving 4 L/d until 30 d of age. Calves on the 6 L-29 d/4 L-60 d had the smallest MR intake from 30 to 60 d old, followed by the 4 L-60 d and 6L-60 d treatments. Starter intake (kg of dry matter/day) did not differ between groups. It increased from 0.065 kg/d in the first month to 0.386 kg/d in the second month, and to 2.065 kg/d after weaning. Weight gain was greater for calves fed more MR in the first month, but no difference was observed during the second month. After weaning, 6L-60 d calves had greater rate of weight gain than others and were heavier at 30, 60, and 90 d of age. Weight of empty forestomachs, ruminal pH, and ammoniac nitrogen concentration were not different among groups. Propionate concentration was lower for 6 L-60 d calves, but acetate and butyrate concentrations were not influenced by MR feeding strategy. Calves fed more MR until d 30 had greater ruminal epithelium mitotic index. The different MR feeding strategies did not influence papillae length or ruminal epithelium thickness. Lesions such as ruminal parakeratosis or hyperkeratosis were not observed. The MR feeding strategy did not affect glucose concentration, but insulin was higher in 6L-60 d calves than in the other groups. Glucose concentration increased with age, whereas insulin decreased until 45 d old, and then started to increase until 90 d. In conclusion, MR feeding strategy did not influence ruminal development. Feeding calves 6 L of MR/d over 60 d resulted in greater rate of weight gain without negative effects on starter intake or forestomach development. The weight advantage that 6L-60 d calves obtained preweaning was maintained until 90 d of age.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a qualidade do colostro de vacas mestiças Holandês Zebu e a transferência de imunidade a seus bezerros. Efeitos de ordem de parto, sexo do bezerro, estação do ano e grupo genético foram estudados em vacas distribuídas em quatro grupos genéticos. Amostras de sangue dos bezerros foram coletadas aos três dias de vida. Foi avaliada a concentração de proteína total no soro (PT) por refratometria e espectrofotometria. As amostras de colostro apresentaram alta qualidade, com concentração média de Ig de 78,5mg/mL. Houve adequada transferência de imunidade passiva, com 88,3% dos bezerros com PT acima de 5,5g/dL. Não houve efeito de ordem de parto, sexo do bezerro, estação do ano e grupo genético da vaca na qualidade do colostro e na PT (P>0,05). Vacas F1 produziram, em média, colostro de alta qualidade e houve sucesso na transferência de imunidade passiva.


The objective of this paper was to evaluate crossbred Holstein Zebu cows colostrum quality and passive immunity transfer to their calves. Parity, calf sex, season of the year and cow genetic group effects in both responses were analyzed. Quality (immunoglobulin - Ig - concentration) was measured in colostrum samples of 186 crossbred cows from four different genetic groups with a colostrometer. Calf’s blood samples were collected on the third day of life. Serum total protein concentration (PT) was measured through refractometry and spectrophotometry. Colostrum samples were classified as high quality and showed mean Ig concentrations of 78.5mg/mL. Passive immunity transfer was successful, since 88.3% of calves had PT higher than 5.5g/dL. There was no effect of parity, calf sex, season of the year or cow genetic group in colostrum quality or serum total protein concentration (P>0.05). Crossbred Holstein Zebu cows produced high quality colostrums. There was success in passive immunity transfer to the calves.
