RESUMO

To compare the effect of an intensity-controlled exercise program (ICEP) and a nonintensity-controlled exercise program (non-ICEP) on the variables responsible for blood pressure regulation in hypertensive older adults. 95 hypertensive older adults (65.40 ± 7.48 years/22 males and 73 females) performed hemodynamic, functional fitness, and biochemical evaluations before and after 12 weeks of the multicomponent exercises which included walking, muscle strength, hydrogymnastics, Pilates, dynamic balance, agility, flexibility, and others. A significant improvement was observed in general functional fitness index (GFFI: p ≤ 0.000, d = 0.35), nitrite (NO2 -: p ≤ 0.000, d = 0.49), systolic blood pressure (SBP: p ≤ 0.000, d = 0.65), diastolic blood pressure (DBP: p ≤ 0.013, d = 0.40), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS: p ≤ 0.007, d = 0.78), activity of the endothelial superoxide dismutase enzyme (ecSOD: p ≤ 0.032, d = 0.41), double product (DP: p ≤ 0.015, d = 0.43), and waist-hip ratio (WHR: p ≤ 0.000, d = 0.44) for ICEP. Only GFFI (p ≤ 0.047, d = 0.12), TBARS (p ≤ 0.000, d = 0.77), SOD (p ≤ 0.025, d = 0.25), DP (p ≤ 0.046, d = 0.26), and BMI (p ≤ 0.018, d = 0.02) presented better results in non-ICEP. When the effect of the groups (controlled by age, BMI, and sex) was evaluated, an increase was observed in the NO2 -, TBARS, and SOD and a reduction in the SBP and WHR variables in the ICEP group compared to the non-ICEP group. Twelve weeks of engagement in a controlled-intensity exercise program was enough to improve the level of functional fitness and variables regarding blood pressure regulation in hypertensive older adults. Conversely, physical exercise performed without intensity control was related to the limited effect on such variables.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the death of Brazilian pregnant and postpartum women due to COVID-19 or unspecific cause. Methods: This is retrospective, descriptive-exploratory, population-based study carried out with the Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe (SIVEP-Gripe) database, with pregnant and postpartum women of reproductive age who died from confirmed COVID-19 between 2020 and 2021. The chosen variables were: age, gestational period, type and number of comorbidities, skin color, using the statistical software R Foundation for Statistical Computing Platform, version 4.0.3 and Statistical Package for Social Science, version 29.0 for analysis. Results: A total of 19,333 cases of pregnant and postpartum women aged between 10 and 55 years diagnosed with SARS were identified, whether due to confirmed COVID-19 or unspecific causes. Of these, 1,279 died, these cases were classified into two groups according to the cause of death: deaths from COVID-19 (n= 1,026) and deaths from SARS of unspecific cause (n= 253). Conclusion: The risk of death increased among black and brown women, in the postpartum period and with the presence of comorbidities, mainly diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and obesity. The data presented here draw attention to the number of deaths from SARS, especially among sociodemographic profiles, precarious access to health, such as the black population. In addition, limitations in adequate access to health care are reinforced by even lower rates of ICU admissions among women who died from SARS of an unspecified cause.

RESUMO

Most published data on mite infestation rates in semi-arid regions have been collected over only 3 or 4 months during a specific period of the year. Therefore, the aim of this study was to observe parasite-host dynamics of hygienic and non-hygienic Africanized bee colonies considering environmental factors that may influence Varroa destructor mite infestation rates in a semi-arid region. To this end, the brood puncture method was applied to 37 colonies, forming two groups, namely G1, encompassing 16 hygienic colonies, and G2, comprising 21 non-hygienic colonies. After forming the groups, 300 worker bees from each colony were examined monthly for mite infestations and the data were correlated with climatological records. The monthly infestation average was considered low, below 10%, except in November, when it reached 12.19% ± 6.45. No statistically significant difference was observed for inter-group infestation rates (P > 0.05). When mite infestation rates were associated with climatic variables, they were linked to colony losses (32%) due to swarming. No significant correlations between hygienic behaviour and parasite infestation rates were noted. Nonetheless, these results support the idea that there is no need to apply acaricides for V. destructor control in Brazil.

RESUMO

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) after three warm-up protocols on back squat performance in trained men. Methods: Fourteen resistance-trained men performed conditioning activity (CA) with high-load (HL-CA), low-load (LL-CA), or usual specific warm-up as a control (CON). HL-CA consisted of one set of three repetitions with 90% of one repetition maximum (RM); LL-CA consisted of one set of six repetitions with 45% of 1 RM performed at maximal velocity; CON involved eight repetitions with 45% of 1 RM at controlled velocity. The participant's performance was measured using the total number of repetitions and volume load (reps × load × sets). Results: There were no significant differences between warm-up for the total number of repetitions (p = 0.17) or total volume load (p = 0.15). There was no difference between conditions for the number of repetitions (main condition effect; p = 0.17); however, participants achieved a significantly higher volume load after HL-PAPE than after CON for the first set (p = 0.04). Conclusion: High or low equated-load CA used as warm-up strategies did not potentiate subsequent performance enhancement in multiple-set back squat exercise performed until muscle failure in comparison with usual warm-up.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) behavior of sesame fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) and methyl ester (FAME) in combination with glycerol and the co-solvents ethanol and methanol. FAEE and FAME were produced through the transesterification of mechanically extracted and purified sesame oil, using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a homogeneous base catalyst. The reactions were conducted in ethanol and methanol to produce FAEE and FAME, respectively. Post-reaction, the products were separated and purified, followed by an analysis of the LLE behavior at 313.15 K and 323.15 K under atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa). The experimental process for the miscibility analysis utilized a jacketed glass cell adapted for this study. Miscibility limits or binodal curves were determined using the turbidity-point method. Tie lines were constructed by preparing mixtures of known concentrations within the two-phase region, which allowed the phases to separate after agitation. Samples from both phases were analyzed to determine their composition. This study revealed that higher temperatures promoted greater phase separation and enhanced the biodiesel purification process. The NRTL model effectively correlated the activity coefficients with the experimental data, showing good agreement, with a root-mean-square deviation of 3.5%. Additionally, the data quality was validated using Marcilla's method, which yielded an R2 value close to 1. Attraction factors and distribution coefficients were also calculated to evaluate the efficiency of the co-solvents as extraction agents. The findings indicated higher selectivity for methanol than for ethanol, with varying degrees of distribution among the co-solvents. These results offer significant insights into enhancing biodiesel production processes by considering the effects of co-solvents on the LLE properties of mixtures, ultimately contributing to more efficient and cost-effective biodiesel production.

RESUMO

AIM: To determine the effectiveness of extraventricular drainage (EVD) combined with fibrinolytics in reducing morbidity and mortality rates associated with intraventricular cerebral hemorrhage (IVH). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A literature review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022332152). Articles were selected from various sources, including PubMed, Trip Database, LILACS, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect. Clinical trials focusing on IVH treatment using EVD and/or fibrinolytics were considered. The Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROB 2) tool was employed for bias assessment. A fixed-effects regression model was used following heterogeneity analysis. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated based on mortality outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 531 patients from four studies were included. The use of fibrinolytics significantly decreased IVH mortality compared with a placebo. The odds ratio (OR) for recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) or alteplase was 0.54 [0.36; 0.82]. For urokinase (UK), the OR was 0.21 [0.03; 1.54], rendering it statistically non-significant. The overall OR was 0.52 [0.35; 0.78], and the heterogeneity I2 was 0% (indicating low heterogeneity). CONCLUSION: While EVD alone is a common approach for managing hydrocephalus, its effectiveness is limited by potential blockages and infections. Combining EVD with UK or rtPA demonstrated improved patient outcomes. rtPA stands out as a reliable and effective option, while limited data are available regarding UK's effectiveness in reducing IVH mortality.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Anacardiaceae), known as Brazilian pepper tree, stands out as a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine. The leaves are popularly used as anti-inflammatory agent and to relieve inflammatory conditions such as bronchitis, ulcers, and wounds, for example. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study evaluated the acute toxicity, genotoxicity, and anti-inflammatory activity of S. terebinthifolia leaf lectin (SteLL) in mice (Mus musculus). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the acute toxicity assay, the animals were treated intraperitoneally (i.p.) or orally (per os) with a single dose of 100 mg/kg. Genotoxicity was assessed by the comet and micronucleus assays. Carrageenan-induced peritonitis and paw edema models were used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of SteLL (1, 5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.). RESULTS: No animal died and no signs of intoxication or histopathological damage were observed in the acute toxicity assay. Genotoxic effect was not detected. In peritonitis assay, SteLL reduced in 56-69% leukocyte migration to the peritoneal cavity; neutrophil count decreased by 25-32%, while mononuclear cell count increased by 67-74%. SteLL promoted a notable reduction of paw edema after 4 h (61.1-63.4%). Morphometric analysis showed that SteLL also decreased the thickness of epidermal edema (30.2-40.7%). Furthermore, SteLL decreased MPO activity, plasma leakage, NO release, and modulated cytokines in both peritoneal fluid and paw homogenate. CONCLUSION: SteLL did not induce acute toxicity or genotoxicity in mice and stands out as a promising candidate in the development of new phytopharmaceuticals with anti-inflammatory action.

RESUMO

Aim: The present study investigated the antimicrobial effectiveness of a rhamnolipid complexed with arginine (RLMIX_Arg) against planktonic cells and biofilms of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Methodology: Susceptibility testing was performed using the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute protocol: M07-A10, checkerboard test, biofilm in plates and catheters and flow cytometry were used. Result: RLMIX_Arg has bactericidal and synergistic activity with oxacillin. RLMIX_Arg inhibits the formation of MRSA biofilms on plates at sub-inhibitory concentrations and has antibiofilm action against MRSA in peripheral venous catheters. Catheters impregnated with RLMIX_Arg reduce the formation of MRSA biofilms. Conclusion: RLMIX_Arg exhibits potential for application in preventing infections related to methicillin-resistant S. aureus biofilms.

RESUMO

Oxidative stress during in vitro of ovarian tissues has adverse effects on follicle survival. α-pinene is a monoterpenoid molecule with antioxidant activity that has great potential to maintain cell survival in vitro. This study investigated the effect of α-pinene (1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, or 20.0 µg/mL) on primordial follicle growth and morphology, as well as on stromal cells and collagen fibers in bovine ovarian slices cultured for six days. The effect of α-pinene on transcripts of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6), glutathione peroxidase (GPX1), and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) was investigated by real-time PCR. The tissues were processed for histological analysis to evaluate follicular growth, morphology, stromal cell density, and collagen fibers. The results showed that 2.5, 5.0, or 10.0 µg/mL α-pinene increased the percentages of normal follicles but did not influence follicular growth. The α-pinene (10.0 µg/mL) kept the stromal cell density and collagen levels in cultured bovine ovarian tissue like uncultured tissues. Ovarian tissues cultured in control medium had reduced expression of mRNA for NRF2, SOD, CAT, GPX1, and PRDX6, but α-pinene (10.0 µg/mL) increased mRNA levels for NRF2 and PRDX6. In conclusion, 10.0 µg/mL α-pinene improves the follicular survival, preserves stromal cell density and collagen levels, and increases transcripts of NRF2 and PRDX6 after in vitro culture of bovine ovarian tissue.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: INSTANT (INhalation of flecainide to convert recent-onset SympTomatic Atrial fibrillatioN to sinus rhyThm) was a multicenter, open-label, single-arm study of flecainide acetate oral inhalation solution (FlecIH) for acute conversion of recent-onset (≤48 hours) symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) to sinus rhythm. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the efficacy and safety in 98 patients receiving a single dose of FlecIH delivered via oral inhalation. METHODS: Patients self-administered FlecIH over 8 minutes in a supervised medical setting using a breath-actuated nebulizer and were continuously monitored for 90 minutes using a 12-lead Holter. RESULTS: Mean age was 60.5 years, mean body mass index was 27.0 kg/m2, and 34.7% of the patients were women. All patients had ≥1 AF-related symptoms at baseline, and 87.8% had AF symptoms for ≤24 hours. The conversion rate was 42.6% (95% CI: 33.0%-52.6%) with a median time to conversion of 14.6 minutes. The conversion rate was 46.9% (95% CI: 36.4%-57.7%) in a subpopulation that excluded predose flecainide exposure for the current AF episode. Median time to discharge among patients who converted was 2.5 hours, and only 2 patients had experienced AF recurrence by day 5. In the conversion-no group, 44 (81.5%) patients underwent electrical cardioversion by day 5. The most common adverse events were related to oral inhalation of flecainide (eg, cough, oropharyngeal irritation/pain), which were mostly of mild intensity and limited duration. CONCLUSIONS: The risk-benefit of orally inhaled FlecIH for acute cardioversion of recent-onset AF appears favorable. FlecIH could provide a safe, effective, and convenient first-line therapeutic option. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Work Ability Index (WAI) assesses work demands, health status, and physical and mental resources. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the measurement properties of the WAI, single-item work ability score (WAS), and short version for online applications. METHODS: One hundred three workers completed the 3 versions of the WAI and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) questionnaire. The reproducibility and construct validity of the 3 versions of the WAI and their concurrent validity with the PSS-10 were tested. Statistical tests were performed with IBM® SPSS 28.0. RESULTS: The test-retest reliability of the WAI, WAS, and WAI short version ranged from good to excellent. The WAI and WAI short version showed excellent internal consistency. The construct validity of the WAS was moderate and positive and it was excellent and positive for the WAI short version. Concurrent validity of the WAI, WAS, and WAI short version was moderate and negative, and item mental resources were strong and negative. Factor analysis reached an acceptable level for all indexes (≥ 0.90). The analysis with two factors reached an acceptable level for all indexes (≥ 0.90) and was the best model. CONCLUSION: The reliability and construct and concurrent validity of the various versions of the WAI were strong to excellent in online applications. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a new grouping of items for the WAI Brazilian version. However, it is necessary to be careful in the choice due to the distribution model of items in health domains and aspects of work.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effects of telerehabilitation with multimodal exercise on cardiac remodeling and blood pressure in hypertensive older adults. METHODS: Thirty-two hypertensive older adults (66.7 ± 5.33 years; 29.5 ± 4.22 Kg/m2; 24 female) were randomized into either a telerehabilitation or a control group. Echocardiographic parameters and blood pressure were assessed before and after the 16-week intervention. The exercise program was supervised, individualized, and offered 3×/week via videoconference. RESULTS: Blood pressure significantly decreased after telerehabilitation when compared to the control group, presenting a large effect size. The moderate effect size in relative and posterior wall thickness (g = 0.63; g = 0.61), shortening fraction (g = 0.54), and ejection fraction (g = 0.68). CONCLUSION: As a preliminary study, telerehabilitation is favorable to promote a moderate clinical improvement of some cardiac morphofunctional parameters and reduce blood pressure in hypertensive older adults.

RESUMO

Dual-species biofilms formed by Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus have high virulence and drug resistance. In this context, biosurfactants produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been widely studied, of which a new derivative (RLmix_Arg) stands out for possible application in formulations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibiofilm activity of RLmix_Arg, both alone and incorporated in a gel prepared with Pluronic F-127, against dual-species biofilms of fluconazole-resistant C. albicans (FRCA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in impregnated catheters. Broth microdilution tests, MTT reduction assays of mature biofilms, impregnation of RLmix_Arg and its gel in peripheral venous catheters, durability tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed. RLmix_Arg showed antimicrobial activity against Candida spp. and S. aureus, by reducing the cell viability of mixed biofilms of FRCA and MRSA, and preventing their formation in a peripheral venous catheter. The incorporation of this biosurfactant in the Pluronic F-127 gel considerably enhanced its antibiofilm activity. Thus, RLmix_Arg has potential application in gels for impregnation in peripheral venous catheters, helping to prevent development of dual-species biofilms of FRCA and MRSA.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Peer violence is a serious type of school violence that is associated with emotional and behavioral problems. OBJECTIVE: To analyze violence between peers associated with students' social skills. METHODS: We used a cross sectional survey nested in a cluster randomized controlled trial to evaluate peer violence among elementary school students and its association with prosocial behaviors and mental problems. Teachers answered an adapted version of the Revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire and the Brazilian adaptation of the Teacher Observation of Classroom Adaptation-Checklist (TOCA-C) scale for each student. Children completed a sociodemographic questionnaire. The participants were 1,152 5-14-year-old children from Brazilian public schools; 79.70% reported being involved in violent situations. RESULTS: Children who had both committed and suffered violence were less likely to exhibit prosocial behaviors. Children who committed and suffered violence and those who only committed were more likely to experience concentration problems and disruptive behaviors. DISCUSSION: This study suggests that peer violence is associated with lower prosocial behaviors and more behavioral problems. Thus, more specialized mental health care is required for children involved in peer violence, in addition to the possibility of implementing and maintaining programs to prevent and reduce violence and to develop prosocial behaviors in schools.

RESUMO

Water scarcity, resulting from climate change, poses a significant threat to ecosystems. Syntrichia ruralis, a dryland desiccation-tolerant moss, provides valuable insights into survival of water-limited conditions. We sequenced the genome of S. ruralis, conducted transcriptomic analyses, and performed comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses with existing genomes and transcriptomes, including with the close relative S. caninervis. We took a genetic approach to characterize the role of an S. ruralis transcription factor, identified in transcriptomic analyses, in Arabidopsis thaliana. The genome was assembled into 12 chromosomes encompassing 21 169 protein-coding genes. Comparative analysis revealed copy number and transcript abundance differences in known desiccation-associated gene families, and highlighted genome-level variation among species that may reflect adaptation to different habitats. A significant number of abscisic acid (ABA)-responsive genes were found to be negatively regulated by a MYB transcription factor (MYB55) that was upstream of the S. ruralis ortholog of ABA-insensitive 3 (ABI3). We determined that this conserved MYB transcription factor, uncharacterized in Arabidopsis, acts as a negative regulator of an ABA-dependent stress response in Arabidopsis. The new genomic resources from this emerging model moss offer novel insights into how plants regulate their responses to water deprivation.

RESUMO

Several cases of elastofibromatous lesion affecting the oral mucosa have been reported. Clinically, these lesions may appear as small exophytic lesions or less often as white lesions. Therefore, fibrous hyperplasia and leukoplakia are not uncommonly considered in clinical differential diagnosis. Microscopically, elastic and fibrous connective tissue deposition is seen. Rarely, elastofibromatous changes can be detected when assessing intraoral lesions, including cysts, salivary gland neoplasms, and epithelial dysplasia. Here we report two oral lesions showing elastofibromatous changes, expanding their clinicopathological spectrum. The first case was a 46-year-old man with a history of asymptomatic nodular lesion on the palate 1 year ago, diagnosed as giant cell fibroma with elastofibromatous changes. The second case was a 79-year-old woman who presented a pigmented and mildly symptomatic lesion on the mandibular alveolar mucosa several months ago, diagnosed as amalgam tattoo associated with elastofibromatous changes.

RESUMO

MnOx-based nanomaterials are promising large-scale electrochemical energy storage devices due to their high specific capacity, low toxicity, and low cost. However, their slow diffusion kinetics is still challenging, restricting practical applications. Here, a one-pot and straightforward method was reported to produce Zn-doped MnOx nanowires with abundant defects and tunable small cross-sections, exhibiting an outstanding specific capacitance. More specifically, based on a facile hydrothermal strategy, zinc sites could be uniformly dispersed in the α-MnOx nanowires structure as a function of composition (0.3, 2.1, 4.3, and 7.6 wt.% Zn). Such a process avoided the formation of different crystalline phases during the synthesis. The reproducible method afforded uniform nanowires, in which the size of cross-sections decreased with the increase of Zn composition. Surprisingly, we found a volcano-type relationship between the storage performance and the Zn loading. In this case, we demonstrated that the highest performance material could be achieved by incorporating 2.1 wt.% Zn, exhibiting a remarkable specific capacitance of 1082.2 F.g-1 at a charge/discharge current density of 1.0 A g-1 in a 2.0 mol L-1 KOH electrolyte. The optimized material also afforded improved results for hybrid supercapacitors. Thus, the results presented herein shed new insights into preparing defective and controlled nanomaterials by a simple one-step method for energy storage applications.

RESUMO

Forest ecosystems play an important role in mitigating the concentration increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere through carbon sequestration by plants and its storage in biomass and soil. The objective was to determine the aerial biomass carbon stock in a dry tropical forest in Brazil. It was developed between 2012 to 2015, in an area with an advanced regeneration stage (50 years) in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco and it was used 40 permanent plots (400 m²) distant 80 m apart, with 50 m from the border, totaling 1.6 ha of the area to sample the shrubby-arboreal component, where all individuals with circumference at breast height (1.30 m of the soil) equal or greater than 6 cm were identified, measured and labeled in 2012 and remeasured in 2015. It was calculated the biomass and carbon stocks through developed equations available in the literature. The results showed that the total biomass and carbon stock in the first year was 27.97 e 12.92 Mg.ha-1 while in 2015 it was 18.49 and 8.39 Mg.ha-1 respectively. The results showed a biomass and carbon stock reduction of more than 30% in the period evaluated, even this, the area manages to present values within the expected pattern for the region, assuring the importance of sustainable forest management of these native/natural vegetation areas.

RESUMO

Species of the genus Candida, characterized as commensals of the human microbiota, are opportunistic pathogens capable of generating various types of infections with high associated costs. Considering the limited pharmacological arsenal and the emergence of antifungal-resistant strains, the repositioning of drugs is a strategy used to search for new therapeutic alternatives, in which minocycline and doxycycline have been evaluated as potential candidates. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of two tetracyclines, minocycline and doxycycline, and their possible mechanism of action against fluconazole-resistant strains of Candida spp. The sensitivity test for antimicrobials was performed using the broth microdilution technique, and the pharmacological interaction with fluconazole was also analysed using the checkerboard method. To analyse the possible mechanisms of action, flow cytometry assays were performed. The minimum inhibitory concentration obtained was 4-427 µg ml-1 for minocycline and 128-512 µg ml-1 for doxycycline, and mostly indifferent and additive interactions with fluconazole were observed. These tetracyclines were found to promote cellular alterations that generated death by apoptosis, with concentration-dependent reactive oxygen species production and reduced cell viability. Therefore, minocycline and doxycycline present themselves as promising study molecules against Candida spp.
