RESUMO

Coffee processing wastes, such as solid (pulp and husk) and wastewater, co-digested with industrial brewery wastewater, serve as excellent substrates for generating methane in the anaerobic digestion process. This study compared methane production using different compositions of cattle manure (CM) and granular sludge from an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor used in poultry wastewater treatment (GS). Four anaerobic batch reactors (500 mL) were assembled, A (50% CM and 50% GS), B (60% CM and 40% GS), C (70% CM and 30% of GS) and D (60% CM and 40% GS). Equal concentrations of substrates were added to all reactors: pulp and husk pretreated by hydrothermolysis (1 g L-1), coffee (10 g COD L-1) and brewery (1.5 g COD L-1) wastewaters. Assays A, B and C were supplemented with 2 g L-1 of yeast extract, except for assay D. The reactors were operated at 37 °C and pH 7.0. In assay B, the highest CH4 production of 759.15 ± 19.20 mL CH4 g-1 TS was observed, possibly favored by the synergistic interactions between cellulolytic bacteria Christensenellaceae_R-7_group and Methanosaeta archaea, as inferred by genes encoding enzymes related to acetoclastic methanogenesis (acetyl-CoA synthetase). Consequently, the electricity production potential of assay B (45614.08 kWh-1 year-1) could meet the energy demand of a farm producing coffee and beer, contributing to a positive energy balance concerning methane generation.

To examine the effects of 7-days juçara powder (JP) intake on oxidative stress biomarkers and endurance and sprint cycling performances. In a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover, and triple-blind study, 20 male trained cyclists were assigned to intake 10 g of JP (240 mg anthocyanins) or placebo (PLA) for 7 days and performed a cycling time-to-exhaustion (TTE). A 5 s cycling sprint was performed before and after the cycling TTE. Blood oxidative stress biomarkers and lactate concentration where evaluated 1 h before (T-1), immediately after (T0), and 1 h after (T1) the cycling TTE. The mean duration time for the cycling TTE was 8.4 ± 6.0% (63 ± 17 s) longer in the JP condition (JP: 751 ± 283 s) compared to PLA (688 ± 266 s) (P < 0.019). Two-way repeated measures Analysis of variance showed an increase in the JP condition for reduced glutathione (GSH) (P = 0.049) at T0 (P = 0.039) and T1 (P = 0.029) compared to PLA with a moderate effect size at T0 (d = 0.61) and T1 (d = 0.57). Blood lactate levels increased over time in both conditions (P ≤ 0.001). No differences were observed for the post-TTE sprint fatigue index, total phenols, protein carbonyls, and glutathione peroxidase activity. Seven-day intake of JP improved cycling endurance performance and increased GSH levels but had no effect on lactate and cycling sprint-induced fatigue.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of supplementation with whey protein combined with vitamins C and E on inflammatory markers in hemodialysis (HD) patients. DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a pioneer, randomized and double-blinded study. Patients were randomized into two groups and stratified by HD frequency. The supplementation group received 20 g of whey protein, 250 mg of vitamin C, and 600 IU of vitamin E; the placebo group, 20 g of rice flour, and microcrystalline cellulose capsules. The interventions were given after HD, 3 times a week, for 8 weeks. The inflammatory markers were assessed: interleukin (IL) IL-12p70, IL-10, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor alpha. For statistical analysis, the χ2 test, Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney test, analysis of variance for repeated two-way measurements, paired t test, and Wilcoxon test were performed. P < .05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Twenty-three patients completed the study. No significant differences were found in inflammatory markers when comparing the groups postintervention. In the intragroup was a decrease in IL-10 in the supplementation group after 8 weeks (P = .0382). IL-6 tended to decrease by 810.95% in the supplementation group and increased by 732.8% (nonsignificant) in the placebo group. CONCLUSION: Whey protein combined with vitamins C and E significantly reduced IL-10 in the supplementation group and could be beneficial to reduce IL-6 in HD patients. Future studies are suggested with a larger sample size, different supplementation doses, and longer interventions.

Anaerobic digestion has emerged as the most appealing waste management strategy in biorefineries. Particularly, recent studies have highlighted the energy advantages of waste co-digestion in industrial biorefineries and the use of two-stage systems. However, there are some concerns about moving the system from laboratory testing to industrial scale. One of them is the high level of investment that is required. Therefore, this study carried out a techno-economic analysis (scale-up and energy production, economic and risk analysis, and factorial design) to assess the feasibility of single- and two-stage systems in the treatment of cheese whey and glycerin for the production of hydrogen and methane. Scenarios (S1 to S9) considered thermophilic and mesophilic single and two-stage systems with different applied organic loading rates (OLRA). The analyses of scale-up and energy production revealed that S3 (a thermophilic single-stage system operated at high OLRA 17.3 kg-COD.m-3.d-1) and S9 (a thermophilic-mesophilic two-stage system operated at high OLRA 134.8 kg-COD.m-3.d-1 and 20.5 kg-COD.m-3.d-1, respectively) were more compact and required lower initial investment compared to other scenarios. The risk analysis performed by a Monte Carlo simulation showed low investment risks (10 and 11%) for S3 and S9, respectively, being the electricity sales price, the key determining factor to define whether the project in the baseline scenario will result in profit or loss. Lastly, the factorial design revealed that while the net present value (NPV) is positively impacted by rising inflation and electricity sales price, it is negatively impacted by rising capitalization rate. Such assessments assist in making decisions regarding which system can be fully implemented, the best market circumstances for the investment, and how market changes may favorably or unfavorably affect the NPV and the internal rate of return (IRR).

Sugarcane vinasse exits the distillation process at high temperatures, which may differ from the optimal temperatures for dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion. A 15 °C temperature increase, for example, stops sugarcane vinasse methane generation, making distillery vinasse digestion complicated. Conversely, in other aspects, co-digesting vinasse and glycerol has been proven to stabilize methane production from vinasse because of sulfate dilution. However, glycerol has not been tested to stabilize vinasse digestion under temperature changes. Thus, this study compared the effects of different temperature settings on the co-digestion of 10 g COD L-1 of vinasse and glycerol (50 %:50 % on a COD basis) in anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AFBR), i.e., an acidogenic and a methanogenic one-stage AFBRs operated at 55, 60, and 65 °C, and two methanogenic AFBRs fed both with acidogenic effluent (one operated at room temperature (25 °C) and the other at 55, 60, and 65 °C). The co-digestion provided steady methane generation at all AFBRs, with methane production rates ranging from 2.27 to 2.93 L CH4 d-1 L-1, whether in one or two stages. A feature of this research was to unravel the black box of the role of sulfate in the digestion of sugarcane vinasse, which was rarely studied. Desulfovibrio was the primary genus degrading 1,3-propanediol into 3-hydroxypropanoate after genome sequencing. Phosphate acetyltransferase (EC: 2.3.1.8, K00625) and acetate kinase (EC: 2.7.2.1, K00925) genes were also found, suggesting propionate was metabolized. In practical aspects, regarding the two-stage systems, the thermophilic-mesophilic (acidogenic-methanogenic) configuration is best for extracting additional value-added products because 1,3-propanediol may be recovered at high yields with steady methane production at reduced energy expenditure in a reactor operated at room temperature. However, the one-stage design is best for methane generation per system volume since it remained stable with rising temperatures, and all systems presented similar methane production rates.

The juçara palm tree produces a small spherical and black-purple fruit similar to açaí. It is rich in phenolic compounds, especially anthocyanins. A clinical trial evaluated the absorption and excretion of the main bioactive compounds in urine and the antioxidant capacity in serum and erythrocytes of 10 healthy subjects after juçara juice intake. Blood samples were collected before (0.0 h) and 0.5 h, 1 h, 2 h, and 4 h after a single dose (400 mL) of juçara juice, while urine was collected at baseline and 0-3 and 3-6 h after juice intake. Seven phenolic acids and conjugated phenolic acids were identified in urine deriving from the degradation of anthocyanins: protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, vanillic acid glucuronide, hippuric acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and ferulic acid derivative. In addition, kaempferol glucuronide was also found in urine as a metabolite of the parent compound in juçara juice. Juçara juice caused a decrease in the total oxidant status of serum after 0.5 h in comparison to baseline values (p < 0.05) and increased the phenolic acid metabolites excretion. This study shows the relationship between the production of metabolites of juçara juice and the total antioxidant status in human serum, indicating evidence of its antioxidant capacity.

Using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Rotational Central Composite Design (RCCD), this study evaluated the removal of DCF under denitrifying conditions, with ethanol as cosubstrate, in batch reactors, being 1 L Erlenmeyer flasks (330 mL of reactional volume) containing Dofing medium and kept under agitation at 130 rpm and incubated at mesophilic temperature (30 °C). It considered the individual and multiple effects of the variables: nitrate (130 - 230 mg NO3- L-1), DCF (60-100 µg DCF L-1) and ethanol (130 - 230 mg EtOH L-1). The highest drug removal efficiency (17.5%) and total nitrate removal were obtained at 176.6 ± 4.3 mg NO3 -L-1, 76.8 ± 3.7 µg DCF L-1, and 180.0 ± 2.5 mg EtOH L-1. Under such conditions, the addition of ethanol and nitrate was significant for the additional removal of diclofenac (p > 0.05). The prevalence of Rhodanobacter, Haliangium and Terrimonas in the inoculum biomass (activated sludge systems) was identified through the 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The potential of these genera to remove nitrate and degrade diclofenac was inferred, and the main enzymes potentially involved in this process were α-methylacyl-CoA racemase, long-chain fatty acid-CoA ligase, catalases and pseudoperoxidases.

Adequate adherence to the 2018 diet and exercise recommendations of the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) can possibly result in less oxidative stress, lower risk to chemo- and radiotoxicity, lower risk of relapse, and increased quality of life in breast cancer survivors. This observational study aims to investigate the influence of adherence to updated recommendations of the WCRF/AICR on oxidative stress biomarkers in women with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant treatment (AT). We hypothesized that adherence to WCRF/AICR recommendations is inversely related to oxidative damage biomarkers and directly associated with antioxidant status. Women (n = 78) were evaluated before (T0) and after AT. After collecting anthropometric, physical activity, and food consumption data, a standardized score of adherence to WCRF/AICR recommendations was applied. The sample was divided into low-medium adherence and high adherence groups. Blood samples were collected at both timepoints for oxidative stress biomarkers analysis. Multiple linear regression analyzes were applied to verify associations between WCRF/AICR score and biomarkers. We found that low-medium adherence to WCRF/AICR recommendations at T0 affected lower levels of reduced glutathione (P= .003) and higher levels of lipid hydroperoxides (P= .002) and plasma carbonylated proteins (P= .001) after AT. The WCRF/AICR score at T0 was inversely associated with changes in plasma carbonylated protein concentrations after AT (adjusted ß = -0.359; P= .01). Our findings suggest that high WCRF/AICR score before and during AT may provide greater stability of antioxidant capacity and protection against exacerbated oxidative stress.

Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of sugarcane vinasse and glycerol can be profitable because of the destination of two biofuel wastes produced in large quantities in Brazil (ethanol and biodiesel, respectively) and the complementary properties of these substrates. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the effect of increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) from 2 to 20 kg COD m-3 d-1 on the AcoD of vinasse and glycerol (50 %:50 % on a COD basis) in a thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR). The highest methane production rate was observed at 20 kg COD m-3 d-1 (8.83 L CH4 d-1 L-1), while the methane yield remained stable at around 265 NmL CH4 g-1 CODrem in all conditions, even when influent vinasse reached 1811 mg SO42- L-1 (10 kg COD m-3 d-1). Sulfate was not detected in the effluent. Bacterial genera related to sulfate removal, such as Desulfovibrio and Desulfomicrobium, were observed by means of shotgun metagenomic sequencing at 10 kg COD m-3 d-1, as well as the acetoclastic archaea Methanosaeta and prevalence of genes encoding enzymes related to acetoclastic methanogenesis. It was concluded that process efficiency and methane production occurred even in higher sulfate concentrations due to glycerol addition.

Anaerobic digestion for CH4 recovery in wastewater treatment has been carried out with different strategies to increase process efficiency, among which co-digestion and the two-stage process can be highlighted. In this context, this study aimed at evaluating the co-digestion of cheese whey and glycerol in a two-stage process using fluidized bed reactors, verifying the effect of increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) (2-20 g-COD.L-1.d-1) and temperature (thermophilic and mesophilic) in the second stage methanogenic reactor. The mesophilic methanogenic reactor (R-Meso) (mean temperature of 22 °C) was more tolerant to high OLR and its best performance was at 20 g-COD.L-1.d-1, resulting in methane yield (MY) and methane production (MPR) of 273 mL-CH4.g-COD-1 and 5.8 L-CH4.L-1.d-1 (with 67% of CH4), respectively. Through 16S rRNA gene massive sequencing analysis, a greater diversity of microorganisms was identified in R-Meso than in R-Thermo (second stage methanogenic reactor, 55 °C). Firmicutes was the phyla with higher relative abundance in R-Thermo, while in R-Meso the most abundant ones were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Regarding the Archaea domain, a predominance of hydrogenotrophic microorganisms could be observed, being the genera Methanothermobacter and Methanobacterium the most abundant in R-Thermo and R-Meso, respectively. The two-stage system composed with a thermophilic acidogenic reactor + R-Meso was more adequate for the co-digestion of cheese whey and glycerol than the single-stage process, promoting increases of up to 47% in the energetic yield (10.3 kJ.kg-COD-1) and 14% in organic matter removal (90.5%).

Nonylphenol ethoxylathe (NPEO) is a non-ionic surfactant of increasing concern, used in the formulation of laundry detergents and is frequently found in aquatic environments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of yeast extract (YE) and sodium fumarate (SF) in NPEO removal from domestic sewage under anaerobic conditions via central composite rotatable design (CCRD) and response surface methodology (RSM). Experiments were designed by varying concentrations of NPEO (1.6-5.8 mg L-1), YE (131.8-468.2 mg L-1) and SF (97.7-602.3 mg L-1) in batch reactors. SF and YE addition significantly influenced NPEO removal and CH4 production. Optimal values of YE (400 mg L-1) and SF (200 mg L-1) result in removal efficiency of 97% for 5 mg L-1 of NPEO, being mostly removed by biodegradation (86%). Meanwhile COD removal was 95% and methane yield was 134 ± 4 NmLCH4 g-¹CODremoved. The most abundant Bacteria genus identified were Macellibacteroides, Longilinea, Petrimonas and Proteiniphilum, while for Archaea, Methanosaeta and Methanoregula were the genera identified in higher relative abundances in optimized conditions.

Considering the scarcity of data in the literature regarding phylogenetic and metabolic composition of different inocula, especially those from thermophilic conditions, this research aimed at characterizing the microbial community and preferable metabolic pathways of an UASB reactor sludge applied to the thermophilic treatment (55°C) of sugarcane vinasse, by means of shotgun metagenomics. After its metabolic potential was depicted, it was possible to observe several genes encoding enzymes that are of great importance to anaerobic digestion processes with different wastes as substrate, especially regarding the biodegradation of carbohydrates and ligninolytic compounds, glycerolypids, volatile fatty acids and alcohols metabolism and biogas (H2 and CH4) production. The genera identified in higher relative abundances for Bacteria domain were Sulfirimonas (37.52 ± 1.8%), possibly related to the sludge endogenic activity due to its strong relation with a peptidoglycan lyase enzymes family, followed by Fluviicola (5.01 ± 1.0%), Defluviitoga (4.36 ± 0.2%), Coprothermobacter (4.32 ± 0.5%), Fervidobacterium (2.93 ± 0.3%), Marinospirillum (2.75 ± 0.2%), Pseudomonas (2.14 ± 0.2%) and Flavobacterium (1.78 ± 0.1%), mostly related with carbohydrates fermentations and/or H2 production. For Archaea domain, Methanosarcina (0.61 ± 0.1%), Methanothermobacter (0.38 ± 0.0%), Methanoculleus (0.30 ± 0.1%), Thermococcus (0.03 ± 0.0%), Methanolobus (0.02 ± 1.8%), Methanobacterium (0.013 ± 0.0%), Aciduliprofundum and Pyrococcus (0.01 ± 0.0%) were the most dominant ones, being Methanosarcina the most related with methanogenesis. It was concluded that the robust inoculum description performed in this study may subside future biotechnological researches by using similar inocula (UASB sludges), focusing on the obtainment of value-added by-products by means of anaerobic digestion, such as volatile fatty acids, alcohols and biogas (H2 and CH4), by using several types of waste as substrate.

Food aversions in women undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer may be linked to oxidative stress and gastrointestinal consequences underlying it, and diet possibly plays a role in this association. This follow-up study included 73 women with breast cancer treated in Florianopolis City, Brazil. Dietary antioxidant capacity-DaC (mmol/d), diet quality-Brazilian Healthy Eating Index Revised (BHEI-R score), and oxidative stress biomarkers were accessed before the treatment, and women were asked if they developed food aversions during adjuvant chemotherapy. Red meat was the main aversion-causing food reported (37.9%, n = 9). There was no difference in DaC, BHEI-R score, or oxidative stress biomarkers between women with no food aversion occurrence and those showing food aversions. A logistic regression adjusted model showed that women exhibiting higher BHEI-R scores were 1.08 times more likely to not develop food aversions during adjuvant chemotherapy (p = 0.041). In summary, this innovative investigation showed that diet quality before adjuvant chemotherapy may influence the non-occurrence of food aversion. Considering this, the result opens new areas for early nutritional interventions, focusing on reducing the occurrence of food aversions and consequently benefiting women with breast cancer by having better outcomes in oncologic treatment.

The effects of physicochemical pre-treatment were evaluated on hydrogen (H2) production and organic acids from hydrolyzed potato peel. Central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) were used to evaluate the effects of different substrate concentrations on a wet basis (38.8-81.2 g.L-1) and hydrolyser ratios (6M NaOH and 30% HCl: 1.6-4.4% v.v-1; and H2SO4: 2.2-7.8% v.v-1). The experiments were conducted in batch reactors at 37 °C, using a heat-treated microbial consortium. The maximum H2 production potential (P), lag phase (λ), and maximum H2 production rate (Rm) were evaluated for untreated and pre-treated potato peel waste. H2 production was positively influenced under hydrolyzed substrate concentrations ≥75 g.L-1 in the three CCDs performed. Only the increase in the H2SO4 proportions (≥5% v.v-1) had a negative influence on H2 production. Increasing the 30% HCl and 6M NaOH proportions did not significantly influence the cumulative H2 production. The highest hydrogen production was obtained after alkaline pre-treatment by dark fermentation (P: 762.09 mL H2.L-1; λ: 14.56 h; Rm: 38.39 mL H2.L-1.h-1). Based on the CCD and RSM, the highest H2 production (1060.10 mL H2.L-1) was observed with 81.2 g.L-1 hydrolyzed potato peel with 3.0% v.v-1 of 6M NaOH. The highest yield liquid metabolites were acetic (513.70 mg. g-1 COD) and butyric acids (491.90 mg. g-1 COD).

Abstract Background The long incubation periods of cardiovascular diseases offer opportunities for controlling risk factors. In addition, preventive interventions in childhood are more likely to succeed because lifestyle habits become ingrained as they are repeated. Objective To investigate the effects of recreational physical activities, in combination or not with a qualitative nutritional counseling, in cardiometabolic risk factors of students with dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity. Methods Students (8-14 years old) were randomly divided into three groups (n=23 each): i ) Control; ii ) PANC, students undergoing Physical Activity and Nutritional Counseling, and iii ) PA, students submitted to Physical Activity, only. Blood samples (12-h fasting) were collected for biochemical analysis and anthropometric markers were also assessed. Two-Way RM-ANOVA and Holm-Sidak's test, and Friedman ANOVA on Ranks and Dunn's test were applied. P ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Effect sizes were evaluated by Hedges' g and Cliff's δ for normal and non-Gaussian data, respectively. Results Compared to the control group and to baseline values, both interventions caused significant average reductions in total cholesterol (11%; p <0.001), LDL-c (19%; p=0.002), and non-HDL-c (19%; p=0.003). Furthermore, students in the PANC group also experienced a significant decrease in body fat compared to baseline (p=0.005) and to control (5.2%; g=0.541). Conclusions The proposed strategies were effective to reduce cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents. The low cost of these interventions allows the implementation of health care programs in schools to improve the students' quality of life.

In this research batch reactors were operated with coffee processing waste and autochthonous microbial consortium, and a taxonomic and functional analysis was performed for phase I of stabilization of maximum H2 production and for phase II of maximum H2 consumption. During phase I, the reactor's operating conditions were pH 4.84 to 8.18, headspace 33.18% to 66.82%, and pulp and husk from 6.95 to 17.05 g/L. These assays continued for phase II, with initial pH conditions of 5.8-8.1, headspace of 33.18-66.82%, and pulp and husk remaining from phase I. The highest homoacetogenesis was observed in assay 5 with pH 7.7, 40% headspace, and 15 g/L of pulp and husk (initial concentrations of phase I). A relative abundance of Clostridium 41%, Lactobacillus 20% and Acetobacter 14% was observed in phase I. In phase II, there was a change in relative abundance of 21%, 63%, and 1%, respectively, and functional genes involved with autotrophic (formyltetrahydrofolate synthase) and heterotrophic (enolase) homoacetogenesis, butanol (3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase), and propionic acid (propionate CoA-transferase) were identified. This study provides a new and amplified insight into the physicochemical and microbiological factors, which can be used to propose adequate operational conditions to maximize the bioenergy production and reduce homoacetogenesis in biological reactors.

This study aimed to compare the production of hydrogen and 1,3-propanediol from crude glycerol (10 g/L) in mesophilic (30 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic fluidized bed reactors, namely AFBR30 °C and AFBR55 °C, respectively, at hydraulic retention times (HRT) reduced from 8 to 1 h. In AFBR30 °C, the absence or low hydrogen yields can be attributed to the production of 1,3-propanediol (maximum of 651 mmol/mol glycerol), and the formation of caproic acid (maximum of 1097 mg/L) at HRTs between 8 and 2 h. In AFBR55 °C, the hydrogen yield of 1.20 mol H2/mol glycerol consumed was observed at the HRT of 1 h. The maximum yield of 1,3-propanediol in AFBR55 °C was equal to 804 mmol/mol glycerol at the HRT of 6 h and was concomitant with the production of hydrogen (0.87 mol H2/mol glycerol consumed) and butyric acid (1447 mg/L).

This study proposed to investigate the effect of Ilex paraguariensis infusion on the absorption of non-heme iron in hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) patients with the HFE genotype. A two-way randomized, controlled, crossover trial was conducted on patients, aged 29-69 years, undergoing maintenance therapy. Fourteen HFE-HH patients ingested a meal containing 11.4 mg iron and 200 mL either of water (control) or of Ilex paraguariensis leaf infusion. The beverages were offered in random order, at intervals separated by a washout period of 7 days. Active surveillance showed no adverse effects. Blood samples were drawn shortly before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 h after the meal for serum iron measurement. A significant reduction in the postprandial serum iron was observed for HH patients after intake of the Ilex paraguariensis infusion (area under the curve (AUC) expressed as mean ± SEM: 173.3 ± 44.7 µmol h-1 L-1) compared to water (1449.4 ± 241.5 µmol h-1 L-1) (p < 0.001). In summary, intake of Ilex paraguariensis leaf infusion significantly inhibited the absorption of iron in patients with HH and, therefore, should be considered as a potential adjuvant for iron overload control.

In the past few years, the extraction of value-added compounds from the anaerobic digestion of glycerol has been an option to add value to this waste because biodiesel production is increasing worldwide. The evolution of research on glycerol valorization by anaerobic digestion has reached the use of high-rate reactors. However, no study has evaluated glycerol digestion in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR), a configuration with potential advantages in methane production. Still, the best operating temperature for high-rate glycerol digestion remains unclear. To clarify these gaps, the present study aimed to compare glycerol digestion in mesophilic AFBR (30 °C) and thermophilic AFBR (55 °C). In both reactors, glycerol concentration was increased from 1.0 to 7.0 g L-1 at a fixed hydraulic retention time of 24 h, resulting in an increase at the organic loading rate from 1.2 to 7.6 kg COD m-3 day-1. Thermophilic digestion of glycerol achieved superior removals of organic matter (67.7-94.2%) and methane yield (330.8 mL CH4 g-1 COD) than the mesophilic digestion (48.6-93.0% and 266.6 mL CH4 g-1 COD). Additionally, the application of the kinetic model of substrate utilization (modified Stover-Kincannon model) indicated a higher substrate utilization coefficient in the thermophilic AFBR (23.09 g L-1 day-1) than the mesophilic AFBR (7.14 g L-1 day-1). Therefore, the application of glycerol concentrations higher than 7.0 g L-1 in thermophilic AFBR should be further investigated. Also, given only operational results, the application of the AFBR in the two-stage anaerobic digestion of glycerol is recommended.
