RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess SARS-CoV-2 prevalence and health outcomes among inmates over 60 years during a COVID-19 outbreak in a major penitentiary complex in the Federal District, Brazil. METHODS: A mass test campaign was performed on May 13, 2020, using antibody-detection rapid tests for asymptomatic inmates and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction testing for those who were symptomatic. Those with negative results were retested on June 16. Inmates were interviewed to characterise background health conditions and the presence of symptoms. RESULTS: A total of 159 inmates were evaluated. In the first mass testing, 79.9% (127/159) of inmates had been infected, of whom 53.5% (68/127) reported symptoms. In the second testing round, 17 new cases were identified, increasing the total to 90.6% (144/159) of inmates with a positive result. Comorbidities were present in 67.3% of inmates; 2 hospitalisations and no COVID-related deaths were recorded. CONCLUSION: More than 90% of inmates aged >60 years were infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the outbreak. Periodic health monitoring, active case finding and early care for symptomatic patients contributed to positive post-infection outcomes. Such measures must be considered essential for the surveillance of COVID-19 in environments with limited capacity to promote social distance, such as penitentiary institutions.

Microorganisms, such as bacteria, tend to aggregate and grow on surfaces, secreting extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), forming biofilms. Biofilm formation is a life strategy, because through it microorganisms can create their own microhabitats. Whether for remediation of pollutants or application in the biomedical field, several methodological approaches are necessary for a more accurate analysis of the role and potential use of bacterial biofilms. The use of computerized microtomography to monitor biofilm growth appears to be an advantageous tool due to its non-destructive character and its ability to render 2D and 3D visualization of the samples. In this study, we used several techniques such as analysis of microbiological parameters and biopolymer concentrations to corroborate porosity quantified by 2D and 3D imaging. Quantification of the porosity of samples by microtomography was verified by increased enzymatic activity and, consequently, higher EPS biopolymer synthesis to form biofilm, indicating growth of the biofilm over 96 â€‹h. Our interdisciplinary approach provides a better understanding of biofilm growth, enabling integrated use of these techniques as an important tool in bioremediation studies of environments impacted by pollutants.

Detection of malignant cells in tissue is a difficult hurdle in medical diagnostics and screening. Carbon nanotubes are extremely sensitive to their local environments, and nanotube-based field-effect transistors (NTFETs) provide a plethora of information regarding the mechanism of interaction with target analytes. Herein, we use a series of functionalized metal nanoparticle-decorated NTFET devices forming an array with multiple nonselective sensor units as the electronic "tongue", sensing all five basic tastes. By extraction of selected NTFET characteristics and using linear discriminant analysis, we have successfully detected and discriminated between malignant and nonmalignant tissues and cells. We also studied the sensing mechanism and what NTFET characteristics are responsible for the variation of response between cell types, allowing for the design of future studies such as detection of malignant cells in a biopsy or the effects of malignant cells on healthy tissue.

RESUMO

The genus Neonella Gertsch, 1936 contains 12 species with an exclusive New World distribution (World Spider Catalog 2015). The genus was proposed by Gertsch (1936) to include N. vinnula Gertsch, 1936 from Florida and Texas, USA. Remaining species were added by Galiano (1965, 1988, 1998) and, more recently, Edwards (2003), Ruiz & Brescovit (2004), and Ruiz et al. (2007).
