RESUMO

Maize is a crop of global economic importance and is widely cultivated throughout the Brazilian territory. The use of biostimulants can increase yield and improve crop yield. Unmanned aerial vehicles can be employed in arable areas, allowing their use in an economically way. This study to evaluate the use of biostimulant and the best application timing using photogrammetric indexes in maize, and indicate the most suitable plant index for yield increase through a Pearson's correlation. The DJI Drone coupled with RGB camera was used, and the images were processed through the AgisoftPhotoscan® software to generate the orthomosaic, and the QGIS® software version 3.4.15 with GRASS was used to generate thematic maps with the classification of the indexes of vegetation (NGRDI, EXG, SAVI, TGI, GLI, RI). A matrix of Pearson correlation coefficients between the variables was also created, and the results were analyzed with the R software. In general, the products Pyroligneous Extract (PE) and the hormonal product (HP) were the best for the two seasons studied. However, the HP was the best product to mitigate plant water stress in the dry period. Application at phenological stage V3 showed the lowest growth in the rainy season and in application to the seeds in the dry season. Dose 4 of the pyroligneous extract increased productivity in the rainy season and level 3.4 for the hormone product. Among the indexes evaluated, only the SAVI index showed significant differences between the others and showed significance for productivity in the two periods.

RESUMO

The need to transition to more sustainable agriculture that is adaptable to environmental challenges, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and minimizing environmental impact, represents the new paradigm of the moment. In this scenario, studies with the adoption of bioinputs in corn cultivation emerge as a viable option for the sustainability of agricultural activity. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the effect of doses of neem vegetable cake on the yield components of corn crops. An experimental design was used of randomized blocks was used, consisting of four doses of neem vegetable rendering (3 kg ha-1, 6 kg ha-1, 9 kg ha-1 and 12 kg ha-1) and a treatment control without the presence of organic fertilizer. The result indicates the presence of a significant effect of treatments with the application of neem cake on the main components of corn yield, including grain productivity, suggesting that the high carbon content present in the organic product can induce phytochemical effects and biological changes. in the soil, making it more productive. It was found that, when administering the maximum experimental dose, compared to the control group, there was a significant effect (p≤0.01) of 21.3% on grain productivity, jumping from 2,140 kg ha -1, when did not apply organic fertilizer, to 2,596 kg ha-1 with the application of 12 kg of neem cake per hectare. It is noted that the increase in grain productivity was in the proportion of 38 kg ha-1 of corn for each kilo of neem cake applied. To facilitate interpretation and decision-making, an analysis of the economic viability of neem cake for rainfed corn was also determined, also identifying the maximum experimental dose of 12 kg ha-1, as the most economically viable, providing an increase in profit of around R$ 119.92 per hectare, in relation to the control.

RESUMO

The biometric differences between fruits and seeds are useful characteristics that can provide important data for the investigation and preservation of the species and may be linked to environmental and genetic influences. In this sense, considering the importance of this species and the need for conservation, the objective was to carry out physical characterization of the fruits and seeds of Hymenaea martiana as well as to determine the seed imbibition curve. The experiment was conducted at the Seed Analysis Laboratory at the Agricultural Sciences Center at the Federal University of Paraíba in Areia, PB. The evaluations carried out were as follows: biometry of fruits and seeds, number of seeds per fruit, colorimetry of fruits and seeds, percentage of damaged seeds, weight of a thousand seeds, seed water content, mass and imbibition curve. The biometric data were subjected to descriptive analysis to determine the minimum, maximum, average value, standard deviation, asymmetry, and kurtosis of the fruits and seeds. In terms of the biometric characteristics of the fruits and seeds of H. martiana, there was a marked variation, with average fruit lengths of 90.28 mm, widths of 46.83 mm, thicknesses of 34.69 mm, weights of 65.86 g and four seeds per fruit. The average length, width, thickness and weight of the seeds were 23.75 mm, 18.34 mm, 12.71 g and 4.13 g, respectively. The fruits were darker than the seeds, and both the fruits and seeds had red tones. Compared with nonscarified seeds, scarified seeds absorb a greater amount of water.

RESUMO

Planting with higher density in sugarcane is one of the practices used to overcome low productivity. However, this planting material is equivalent to 25% of the total cost of production, being one of the main expenses for cultivation. In this sense, the present work aims to evaluate the productivity and economic viability of sugarcane as a function of planting density. The experiment was carried out at Usina Monte Alegre in the municipality of Mamanguape, Paraíba, Brazil, from March 2021 to January 2022 with the variety RB92579. Seven planting density were studied: T1: 7 gems m-1, T2: 10 gems m-1, T3: 12 gems m-1, T4: 11 gems m-1, T5: 15 gems m-1, T6: 17 gems m-1, T7: 24 gems m-1, in randomized blocks with four replications. Growth, productivity and economic viability were evaluated. The highest productivity of cane and sugar, 77.69 ton ha-1 and 10.390 ton ha-1, respectively, was with planting density of 17 and 24 gems-1. While the minimum productivity of cane (61.313 ton ha-1) and sugar (7.924 ton ha-1) was recorded at sowing density of 7 and 11 gems-1. However, cultivation density with 7 and 10 gems m-1 were the ones that provided the highest profitability around 50%, followed by density of 12, 15 and 17 gems m-1 with an average of 45% profit and 11 and 24 gems m-1 with the lowest proportion of profit on average 38%. The cultivation with 17 gems m-1 of cane provides in cane-plant, variety RB92579, greater productivity with a profit rate of 45%, being the most suitable.

RESUMO

Salinity reduces feijão-caupi production, and the search for tolerant varieties becomes important within the agricultural context, as, in addition to being used in the field, they can be used in genetic improvement. The objective was to for a identify variety that is tolerant to salinity considering the physiological quality of seeds and seedling growth. A 2 × 4 factorial scheme was used, referring to the varieties Pingo-de-ouro and Coruja, and four electrical conductivities of water (0; 3.3; 6.6 and 9.9 dS m-1). The physiological quality of seeds and the growth of seedlings were analyzed, in addition to the cumulative germination. The Pingo-de-ouro variety showed no germination, length of the shoot and root, dry mass of the shoot and root compromised up to electrical conductivity of 6 dS m-1 in relation to 0.0 dS m-1. On the other hand, the Coruja variety showed reduced germination, increased shoot and root length. The creole variety Pingo-de-ouro proved to be tolerant to salinity.

RESUMO

Low density sugarcane plantation (LDSP) has been implemented by some sugarcane producers in Brazil, aiming to save seeds and operational costs. The study was carried out in the municipality of Areia, Paraíba, Brazil. Five planting densities were used, varying from 5 to 25 m-2 of buds arranged in randomized blocks, with four replications. Data were measured annually over three cultivation cycles (2017 to 2020), during which the field was fertilized with NPK and the harvests were carried out manually without prior burning. The lower planting density presents higher productivity only in the cane plant (101.03 t ha-1) due to the higher plant height (2.37 m) and the higher number of stalks (11 stalks m-2), suggesting that these variables are due to the greater availability of light, water and photosynthate. However, there is a drastic reduction in sugarcane yield for this lower population in the 2nd ratoon by up to 65.62%, which is correlated with number of stalks per meter. We demonstrate the agronomic viability of LDSP in the population of 10 buds m-2 in relation to conventional planting of sugarcane until the 2nd ratoon. Data are important for future studies to present additional considerations for other production factors, such as the effects of mechanized harvesting and the management of nutrients and water, assessing the sustainability of this large-scale planting system.

RESUMO

Maleic acid was studied by Raman spectroscopy and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) under high pressure conditions by using a diamond anvil cell. The Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed from ambient pressure up to 9.2 GPa in the 100-3200 cm-1 spectral range. While the XRD measurements were performed up to 10.1 GPa. Here we present the pressure-dependence behavior from both the Raman modes and cell parameters. Maleic acid lattice parameters decrease anisotropically as a function of pressure and a reduction of 27% in the volume of the unit cell was observed. Modifications in the material's compressibility were observed at around 2 and 6 GPa.

RESUMO

Sugarcane cultivation stands out in Brazilian agribusiness, covering more than eight million hectares for the production of sugar, ethanol, and by-products. Fertilization is one of the limiting factors in sugarcane yield, for which filter cake is a viable solution to meet plant nutritional needs. This study aimed to assess the effect of enriched filter cake on gas exchange and yield in RB041443 sugarcane, cultivated in soils of the coastal tablelands of Paraíba, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in the Monte Alegre S/A sugarcane mill, in the municipality of Mamanguape, using a randomized blocks experimental design, with 12 treatments (T1- cake, T2- cake + MAP, T3- cake + gypsum, T4 - cake + phosphate, T5- cake + bagasse, T6- cake + MAP + gypsum, T7- cake + MAP + phosphate, T8- cake + MAP + bagasse, T9- cake + gypsum + phosphate, T10- cake + gypsum + bagasse, T11- cake + phosphate + bagasse, and T12- control (only MAP)), and 4 replications, totaling 48 plots. A significant effect (5% probability) was also observed for the variables number of leaves and tons of stem per hectare (TSH). T1- cake, T4- cake + phosphate, T6- cake + MAP + gypsum and T10- cake + gypsum + bagasse, had the best results for TSH, with yields greater than 140 t ha-1. Regarding stomatal conductance, the highest values were obtained in T6 and T8, which, together with T11, had the highest gs values. Concerning the internal carbon concentration, T1, T2, T6, and T8 stood out. T6 also had a significant effect on transpiration. From this study, it was concluded that the use of enriched filter cake as a base fertilizer in sugarcane culture contributes to increasing the yield of the RB041443 variety, generating positive responses for plant gas exchange, being T1 and T10 indicated to increase the production in the sugar-energy sector.

RESUMO

The extracts of medicinal plants are used for the treatment of seeds in order to reduce the action of phytopathogens and increase the vigor of the seeds. Currently, computerized image analysis has been used to assess the physiological quality of seed lots. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of the Vigor-S® software in the evaluation of the physiological quality of cowpea seeds treated with essential oils, comparing with a traditional test and the principal component analysis. Two cowpea cultivars were analyzed, BRS Tumucumaque and BRS Guariba, treated with doses of natural extracts of Alfavaca, garlic, horsetail, citronella and pyroligneous acid. The traditional method consisted of evaluations for germination, first germination count, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, accelerated aging, fresh matter and dry matter of seedling and the image analysis for: seedling length, growth index, uniformity index, vigor index, and germination. A Principal component analysis was applied to reduce the number of variables. Horsetail, Alfavaca and citronella extracts were efficient in increasing the physiological quality of the seeds of at least one cultivar. The Vigor-S® software proved to be efficient compared to traditional tests to assess the physiological quality of seeds. Principal Component Analysis is an ally to identify the best extracts and doses to be used. The image analysis method proved to be effective when compared to the traditional method and can therefore be used.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the world, with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) being the main responsible for this leadership. One of the determining factors in the outcome of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is the time to start treatment. An extremely promising path for obtaining earlier diagnosis and treatment has been the use of technological innovations in emergency care units. PRUPOSE: this study was carried out to assess the impact of applying a technology hub in the chest pain scenario in the emergency room, regarding the feasibility and potential reduction of time for diagnosis and treatment of ACS. METHODS: data obtained from 10 hospitals in the public health system in Brazil, which implemented the technology hub in the last 7 months (May to October 2021), were analyzed. This technology hub uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify electrocardiograms (ECGs) with a high probability of alterations, which must be reported within 5 minutes by the cardiologist on shift (24/7) on the platform. RESULTS: 5,506 ECGs were entered into the platform, of which 53.77% (2,961) were considered abnormal; of these, 9.92% (294) had alterations compatible with ischemic events (currents of injury or myocardial ischemia). The median time for the ECG report made by the specialist was 2 minutes and 51 seconds. CONCLUSION: the implementation of a technology hub in the chest pain scenario in the emergency room proved to be feasible and has great potential for reducing the distance between symptoms and the treatment of patients with ACS.

RESUMO

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a relevant physiological variable for the estimation of cardiac autonomic function. Although the gold standard for HRV registration is the electrocardiogram (ECG), several applications (APPs) have been increasingly developed. The evaluation carried out by these devices must be compatible with ECG standards. The aim of this study was to compare the data obtained simultaneously with ECG and APP with chest heart rate transmitters. Fifty-six healthy individuals (28 men and 28 women) were evaluated at rest through a short simultaneous HRV measurement with both devices. Data from both acquisition systems were analyzed separately using their own analysis software and exported and analyzed using a validated software. Signal recordings were compatible between the two acquisition systems (Pearson r=0.99; P<0.0001). Although a high correlation was found for the HRV variables obtained in the time domain (Spearman r=0.99; P<0.0001), the correlation decreased in the frequency domain (Pearson r=0.85; P<0.0001) when two software programs were used. Comparison of the averages of spectral analysis parameters also showed differences when HRV data were analyzed separately in each device for low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) bands. Although the portability of these mobile devices allows for optimal HRV evaluation, the direct analysis obtained from these devices must be carefully evaluated with respect to frequency domain parameters.

RESUMO

Purpose: Dysregulation of glutamatergic neurotransmission (GN) is linked to sympathetic-respiratory overactivity and hypertension. We investigated whether maternal protein restriction is able to alter GN into the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) in adult offspring. Methods: Wistar rat dams were fed with control (NP; 17% protein) or low-protein (LP; 8% protein) diet during pregnancy and lactation, and their offspring were evaluated at 70-90d old. Direct measurements of mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (RF) and respiratory (RV) and cardiac (CV) variabilities were assessed in consciousness. The evaluation of GN into NTS over cardiovascular system were assessed by microinjections of unilateral glutamate (L-glu 0.5 nmol/100nL) and bilateral kynurenic acid (Kyn 2.5 nmol/50nL). The NP and LP groups were compared using unpaired Student's t-test where p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The LP exhibited higher MAP at rest (p = 0.03) and after L-glu microinjection (p = 0.04), as well as an increase over HR after Kyn microinjection when compared to the NP (p = 0.049). In the RV, the LP group showed an increase of the component-standard deviation 1 (p = 0.037) at rest. In the CV, the LP presented an increase of the low frequency (LF) component of the pulse interval (PI) (p = 0.034), a decrease of high frequency (HF) of the PI (p = 0.034), beyond an increased LF/HF ratio of the PI (p = 0.027) when compared to the NP. The kynurenic acid microinjection did not produce changes in RV or CV (p > 0.05).Conclusions: Altered GN into the NTS may contribute to augmented blood pressure in protein-restricted offspring.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the recovery of epididymal spermatozoa from castrated dogs using retrograde flow (FL) and flotation (FL) techniques in Tris-egg yolk diluent, before and after cryopreservation. Thirty testicle-epididymal complexes (CTE) were collected, 15 for FR and 15 for FL and soon after spermatozoid recovery, morphological changes in these spermatic cells were analyzed. After addition of the diluent, the parameters of total motility (MOT) and vigor (V) were evaluated. The post-cryopreserved semen was submitted to thermoresistance (TTR) test at T0, T30, T60 and T90 minutes, as well as the plasma and acrosomal membrane evaluation by fluorescent probes. There was no statistically significant difference between techniques tested for MOT and vigor in the diluted semen (FR-MOT: 82.3% and V: 3.4, FL-MOT: 79.6% and V: 3.2) and post-cryopreserved (FR-MOT: 34% and V: 2.8, FL-MOT: 30% and V: 2.7). From the T30 there was a significant difference regarding MOT and vigor in the used techniques, and the time also damaged the spermatic acrosome from the T30. It is concluded that the epididymal spermatozoa recovering techniques from castrated dogs, tested in this study, can be used for semen refrigeration and cryopreservation.(AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the sperm quality of Canindé (native) and British Alpine (exotic) goats in the Northeast of Brazil. The experiment was carried out from July to September of the years 2015 and 2016. Sperm collections of Canindé (n = 4) and British Alpine (n = 7) males were performed using artificial vagina. After collection, the sperm was evaluated for volume (ml), concentration (sptz/ml), motility (%), and vigor (1-5). Then diluted in ACP-101c and cryopreserved in TK3000TM machine. Subsequently, kinetic parameters were analyzed through SCA TM software and mitochondrial activity. In fresh sperm, the two races presented values of motility and concentration within the recommended for the specie. However, volume and scrotal circumference values were higher in the British Alpine breed (0.73 mL ± 0.32; 27.35 cm ± 2.09) than in the Canindé breed (0.36 mL ± 0.07; 23 , 25 cm ± 0.95) (p <0.05). Therefore, fresh sperm from both breeds can be used in reproductive biotechniques. On the other hand, the post-thawed sperm of the Canindé breed showed better quality, probably because the animals were more adapted to the adverse conditions of the Northeast region and are recommended for artificial insemination programs.(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The relationship of the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with complications after stroke has not been fully characterized for the entire clinical spectrum of eGFR and for the fluctuation in eGFR during hospital stay. METHODS: Data from the Norfolk and Norwich Stroke Registry recorded between January 2003 and April 2015 were analysed. eGFR was categorized into six clinically relevant categories as per the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guidelines. The change in eGFR during acute admission was categorized into the following: within 5% change (reference), 5%-20% decline, >20% decline, 5%-20% increase and >20% increase. All-cause mortality, recurrent stroke, incident myocardial infarction, prolonged hospital stay and stroke disability at discharge were outcomes of interest. RESULTS: In all, 10 329 stroke patients (mean age 77.8 years) were followed for a mean of 2.9 years (30 126 person-years). Multivariable adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for all-cause mortality were 0.91 (0.80-1.04), 0.96 (0.83-1.11), 1.23 (1.06-1.43), 1.54 (1.31-1.82) and 2.38 (1.91-2.97) for eGFR levels 60-89, 45-59, 30-44, 15-29 and <15 respectively, compared to eGFR ≥ 90 ml/min/1.73 m2 . The hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for eGFR change were 1.56 (1.36-1.79), 1.17 (1.05-1.30), 1.47 (1.32-1.62) and 1.71 (1.55-1.88) for >20% decline, 5%-20% decline, 5%-20% increase and >20% increase, respectively, compared to change within 5%. Results were similar for other outcomes except recurrent stroke. CONCLUSIONS: Stroke patients with eGFR < 45 ml/min/1.73 m2 at hospital admission and >5% decline or increase in eGFR during hospital stay were at substantially higher risk of poor outcomes, particularly all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, prolonged hospital stay and disability at discharge.

RESUMO

This study reports the antibacterial properties and modulation analysis of antibiotic activity by NaCe(MoO4)2 microcrystals as well as their structural and morphological characterization. Evaluation of the antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating activity was carried out using the broth microdilution method. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) of the compounds were expressed as the geometric mean of the triplicate values obtained through the use of Resazurin. Compound concentrations in the plates ranged from 512 to 0.5 µg/mL. Regarding its direct antibacterial activity, NaCe(MoO4)2 had a MIC ≥ 1024 µg/mL against all studied strains. As for its modulatory effect, it presented synergism with the antibiotic Gentamicin against the S. aureus strain and with Norfloxacin against E. coli, causing a reduction of 75% and 60%, respectively, in the antibiotic quantity required to have the same effect on the strain in study.

RESUMO

In this study, we report the antibacterial activity and modulation of antibiotic activity by Fe2(MoO4)3 microstructures obtained by the hydrothermal route without use of surfactants or organic additives. This material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The XRD pattern showed that the Fe2(MoO4)3 crystallize in a monoclinic structure without secondary phases. Raman spectroscopy confirms the formation of Fe2(MoO4)3. SEM images show that the Fe2(MoO4)3 obtained have ball-of-yarn shaped morphology. In the antibacterial assays, strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were assayed by microdilution method to evaluate the antibacterial and modulatory-antibiotic activity with antibiotics as gentamicin, norfloxacin and imipenem. Against all bacteria, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was Fe2(MoO4)3 ≥ 1024 µg/mL. This high MIC result must be associated with the fact of the iron be an essential microelement to the bacterial growth. However, when the Fe2(MoO4)3 was assayed in association with the antibiotics was observed an antagonistic effect demonstrated by an enhance of the MIC. This fact is associated directly with the pro-oxidative properties of metallic oxides. These compounds enhance the production of free radicals, as H2O2 and superoxide ions that can affect the cell structures as cell membrane and cell wall. Other effect is associated with the possible coordination of the metal, performing bonds with the chemical structure of the antibiotics, reducing their activity. Our results indicated that nanocompounds as Fe2(MoO4)3 can not be used as antimicrobial products for clinical usage, neither directly and neither in association with antibiotics.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the reproductive, biochemical, and hematological outcomes of pregnant rats exposed to protein restriction. Wistar rat dams were fed a control normal-protein (NP, 17% protein, n=8) or a low-protein (LP, 8% protein, n=14) diet from the 1st to the 20th day of pregnancy. On the 20th day, the clinical signs of toxicity were evaluated. The pregnant rats were then anesthetized and blood samples were collected for biochemical-hematological analyses, and laparotomy was performed to evaluate reproductive parameters. No sign of toxicity, or differences (P>0.05) in body weight gain and biochemical parameters (urea, creatinine, albumin, globulin, and total protein) between NP and LP pregnant dams were observed. Similarly, hematological data, including red blood cell count, white blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell distribution width (coefficient of variation), mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, % lymphocytes, absolute lymphocyte count, platelet count, and mean platelet volume were similar (P>0.05) at the end of pregnancy. Reproductive parameters (the dam-offspring relationship, ovary mass, placenta mass, number of corpora lutea, implantation index, resorption index, and the pre- and post-implantation loss rates) were also not different (P>0.05) between NP and LP pregnant dams. The present data showed that a protein-restricted diet during pregnancy did not alter reproductive, biochemical, and hematological parameters and seems not to have any toxic effect on pregnant Wistar rats.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is common and associated with adverse outcomes. Data on its impact beyond 1 year are scarce. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational study was conducted in a cohort of stroke patients admitted consecutively to a tertiary referral center in the east of England, UK (January 2003-April 2015). Logistic regression models examined inpatient mortality and length of stay (LOS). Cox regression models examined longer-term mortality at predefined time periods (0-90 days, 90 days-1 year, 1-3 years, and 3-10 years) for SAP. Effect of SAP on functional outcome at discharge was assessed using logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 9238 patients (mean age [±SD] 77.61 ± 11.88 years) were included. SAP was diagnosed in 1083 (11.7%) patients. The majority of these cases (n = 658; 60.8%) were aspiration pneumonia. After controlling for age, sex, stroke type, Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project (OCSP) classification, prestroke modified Rankin scale, comorbidities, and acute illness markers, mortality estimates remained significant at 3 time periods: inpatient (OR 5.87, 95%CI [4.97-6.93]), 0-90 days (2.17 [1.97-2.40]), and 91-365 days (HR 1.31 [1.03-1.67]). SAP was also associated with higher odds of long LOS (OR 1.93 [1.67-2.22]) and worse functional outcome (OR 7.17 [5.44-9.45]). In this cohort, SAP did not increase mortality risk beyond 1 year post-stroke, but it was associated with reduced mortality beyond 3 years. CONCLUSIONS: Stroke-associated pneumonia is not associated with increased long-term mortality, but it is linked with increased mortality up to 1 year, prolonged LOS, and poor functional outcome on discharge. Targeted intervention strategies are required to improve outcomes of SAP patients who survive to hospital discharge.
