RESUMO

The transition metal carbides/nitrides referred to as MXenes has emerged as a wonder material presenting newer opportunities owing to their unique properties such as high thermal and electrical conductivity, high negative zeta-potential and mechanical properties similar to the parent transition metal carbides/nitrides. These properties of MXenes can be utilized in various societal applications including for energy storage and energy conversion. In this focused review, we provide a ready glance into the evolutionary development of the MXene family and various efforts that are made globally towards property improvement and performance enhancement. Particular attention in this review is made to direct the attention of readers to the bright prospects of MXene in the energy storage and energy conversion process - which is extremely timely to tackle the current concern on climate change. The review concludes by offering fresh insights into the future research needs and challenges that need to be addressed to develop resilient energy solutions.

Bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, and pyriproxyfen, a plant growth regulator, are used extensively in agriculture for controlling the different insect pests. The present study was undertaken to examine the dissipation behavior of a formulation with a combination of pyriproxyfen and bifenthrin on chili and brinjal under field conditions at four different locations. Dissipation study of combination of pyriproxyfen and bifenthrin revealed swift degradation in both crops with a half-life of 2.5-2.6 and 2.0-2.1 days in brinjal and chili, respectively. Also, a simple method for simultaneous quantification of pyriproxyfen and bifenthrin was developed and validated using modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) technique on liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Recovery of the method was found to be under an acceptable range of 90.0%-93.5% and 88.7%-94.3% in chili and 92.4%-96.6% and 97.4%-100.9% in brinjal for pyriproxyfen and bifenthrin, respectively. At harvest time, the terminal residues of bifenthrin and pyriproxyfen were below the maximum residue limits set by European Union in chili and brinjal, respectively, suggesting that the use of this pesticide formulation is safe and does not impose harmful effects on human health. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: In this paper, dissipation behavior of a pesticide formulation with a combination of pyriproxyfen and bifenthrin was undertaken under field conditions at four different locations on chili and brinjal in India. The simultaneous quantification of pyriproxyfen and bifenthrin using LC-MS/MS technique has been validated incorporating modified QuEChERS extraction method with limit of detection at 0.005 µg/g and limit of quantification at 0.01 µg/g, which is well below the EU-MRLs (European Union legislation Maximum Residue Level) of pyriproxyfen and bifenthrin in both chili and brinjal. Furthermore, dissipation kinetics of a formulation undertaken under field conditions at four different locations on chili and brinjal suggested that the terminal residues of both bifenthrin and pyriproxyfen were below the maximum residue limits set by European Union in chili and brinjal, respectively, at the time of harvest and that the use of this pesticide formulation is safe.

The current method of agriculture entails the usage of excessive amounts of pesticides and fertilizers. The blatant use of conventional pesticides and fertilizers over several decades has led to their bioaccumulation with adverse effects on soil biodiversity and the development of resistance by pests. With the decline in clinically useful antibiotics and increase in multi drug resistant microbes, it is imperative to develop new and effective antimicrobial therapies. Growing awareness and demand for efficacious biorational pesticides are on the rise. Silver nanoparticles are widely known antimicrobials and have been in use for several purposes for a long time. This work reviews the implications of applying silver nanoparticles in agriculture and their possible consequences. The physiological and biochemical changes in plants due to the uptake of silver nanoparticles as a consequence of its morphology, capping biomolecules and method of application are comprehensively discussed in this review article. Studies on tolerance levels or stress due to silver nanoparticles by variation in concentration/doses on diverse flora and fauna are also analyzed here. Further, phytotoxicity and genotoxicity due to the metal as well as its transformation in soil, water and sludge are taken into account. We also gauge the potential of biogenic silver nanoparticles-viable antimicrobial agents for enhanced applications in agriculture as biopesticides.

Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are prepared from a natural resource Carica Papaya Leaves, by sand bath method. The as-synthesized CDs optical and structural properties were characterized by UltraViolet-Visible, FT- IR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Also the size, shape, and particle size distribution was studied using Transmission electron microscopy technique. These CDs were examined for biomedical applications like free radical scavenging activity using DPPH assay, antioxidant activity using phosphomolybdate assay, and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity using membrane stabilization protocol. The CDs exhibited excellent biological activities at lower concentrations and showed notable half-maximal effective concentration (EC50). The EC50 of free radical scavenging activity (27.6 µg/mL), antioxidant activity (23.00 µg/mL), and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity (15.52 µg/mL) signifies that CDs can be potential therapeutic agents.

The degradation of Pentoxifylline (PXF) was achieved successfully by green energy in a built-in solar photocatalytic system using hybrid LiCs ferrites (Li0.5Cs0.5FeO2) as magnetically recoverable photocatalysts. Kinetics showed a first-order reaction rate with maximum PXF removal of 94.91% at mildly acidic pH; additionally, the ferromagnetic properties of catalyst allowed recovery and reuse multiple times, reducing costs and time in degradation processes. The degradation products were identified by HPLC-MS and allowed us to propose a thermodynamically feasible mechanism that was validated through DFT calculations. Additionally, toxicity studies have been performed in bacteria and yeast where high loadings of Cs showed to be harmful to Staphylococcus aureus (MIC≥ 4.0 mg/mL); Salmonella typhi (MIC≥ 8.0 mg/mL) and Candida albicans (MIC≥ 10.0 mg/mL). The presented setup shows effectiveness and robustness in a degradation process using alternative energy sources for the elimination of non-biodegradable pollutants.
