Objective: To evaluate the signalment and clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcome features of dogs diagnosed with anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) intoxication in Saskatchewan. Animals: We studied 349 dogs. Procedure: Medical records from the Veterinary Medical Centre (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) between 1999 and 2022 were reviewed. Cases were included if they met at least 1 of the following criteria: owner witnessed the dog ingesting an AR; AR was seen in the vomitus when emesis was induced; the dog had clinical signs of coagulopathy, with elevation of PT ± aPTT that normalized after vitamin K1 therapy, in the presence of appropriate clinical and paraclinical data and the absence of other causes of hypocoagulable state determined by the primary clinician. Results: Fifty-three percent of cases were seen between July and October. Most dogs (61%) came from an urban setting. Ninety-two percent of dogs ingested a 2nd-generation AR and the most frequent toxin was bromadiolone. Clinical signs were reported in 30% of AR intoxications and included lethargy (86%), dyspnea (55%), and evidence of external hemorrhage (44%). The most common site of hemorrhage was the pleural space, accounting for 43% of hemorrhage sites. Consumptive thrombocytopenia was reported in 24% of dogs with evidence of AR-induced hemorrhage, with moderate (platelet count < 60 K/µL) and marked (< 30 K/µL) thrombocytopenia in 7/12 and 2/12 dogs, respectively. Blood products were administered to 84% of dogs with AR-induced hemorrhage; the most common product administered was fresh frozen plasma (56% of cases). Among dogs with AR-induced hemorrhage, those that received blood products were more likely to survive to discharge (81%) compared to those that did not (19%) (P = 0.017). Eighty-six percent of dogs with AR-induced hemorrhage survived to discharge. Conclusion and clinical relevance: The pleural space was the most common site of hemorrhage. Moderate thrombocytopenia was a common finding. Eighty-six percent of dogs with AR-induced hemorrhage survived to discharge.


Toxicité des rodenticides anticoagulants chez les chiens : étude rétrospective de 349 cas confirmés en Saskatchewan. Objectif: Évaluer le signalement et les caractéristiques cliniques, de laboratoire, de traitement et de résultats des chiens diagnostiqués avec une intoxication par un rodenticide anticoagulant (AR) en Saskatchewan. Animaux: Nous avons étudié 349 chiens. Procédure: Les dossiers médicaux du Veterinary Medical Centre (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) entre 1999 et 2022 ont été examinés. BACKGROUND: Hyperthyroidism in humans is associated with a hypercoagulable state and an increased risk of thromboembolism. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hemostatic variables in hyperthyroid and euthyroid cats with the hypothesis that hyperthyroid cats will have evidence of altered hemostasis consistent with a potential hypercoagulable state. ANIMALS: Client-owned hyperthyroid (n = 16) and euthyroid (n = 15) cats over 8 years of age. METHODS: Prospective observational study. Hyperthyroid and euthyroid cats were enrolled. Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), whole-blood platelet impedance aggregometry (WBPIA) and a point-of-care viscoelastic coagulation monitor (VCM-Vet) were performed immediately after minimally traumatic venipuncture under sedation. RESULTS: Hyperthyroid cats had significantly higher values for variables as assessed by VCM-Vet: A10 (34 [17-47] vs 25 [17-38], P = .003); A20 (39.5 [23-55] vs 31 [21-45], P = .003); and MCF (41 [24-58] vs 35 [22-49], P = .03). Hyperthyroid cats had significantly different values versus the euthyroid cohort as assessed by different ROTEM channels: increased A10, INTEM (61.5 [39-75] vs 54 [23-66], P = .007) and FIBTEM (18 [10-35] vs 13 [2-27], P = .01); increased A20, INTEM (68 [45-78] vs 61 [30-70], P = .006) and FIBTEM (17 [10-34] vs 11 [2-25], P = .002); increased MCF, EXTEM (72 [65-81] vs 69 [34-78], P = .04), INTEM (70 [45-85] vs 62 [35-71], P = .01) and FIBTEM (18 [13-37] vs 14 [3-27], P = .02); increased alpha angle, EXTEM (80 [68-85] vs 76 [41-84], P = .01); shortened CT, EXTEM (52.5 [29-73] vs 60 [52-92], P = .003) and FIBTEM (52.5 [16-75] vs 65 [53-165], P = .001); and decreased ML, FIBTEM (20 [1-36] vs 33 [19-59], P <.001). No significant differences were found with WBPIA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The hyperthyroid cats in this study had evidence of altered hemostasis as assessed by 2 viscoelastic methodologies, and characterized by increased clot amplitude, firmness, and faster coagulation times vs euthyroid controls.

A 16-month-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat weighing 2.7 kg was referred for further evaluation of acute generalized muscle weakness and paraparesis after a long-standing history of polyuria-polydipsia. The diagnosis of hypodipsic/adipsic hypernatremia relied on the key findings of absent spontaneous drinking despite hypernatremia and a hyperosmolar state (444.8 mOsm/kg, reference interval 280 to 310 mOsm/kg). Brain MRI revealed severe multifocal anatomic anomalies of the rostral calvarium and the forebrain, suggestive of encephaloclastic porencephaly. Involvement of the thalamic and hypothalamic regions could have been responsible for the cat's adipsic hypernatremia. The unique aspects of this case were the rare description of central nervous system disease leading to hypodipsia, and the history of chronic polydipsia before the acute onset of hypodipsia. Key clinical message: Multifocal abnormalities of the forebrain can present with polyuria-polydipsia syndrome, hypodipsia/adipsia, or both, depending on the stage of the disease. This likely happens when the hypothalamic and thalamic regions are affected, since they regulate antidiuretic hormone release and thirst, respectively.


Hypernatrémie hypodipsique après polydipsie ancienne chez un chat suspect de traumatisme crânien néonatal. Un chat domestique à poil court mâle castré âgé de 16 mois et pesant 2,7 kg a été référé pour une évaluation plus approfondie de faiblesse musculaire aiguë généralisée et de paraparésie après une longue histoire de polyurie-polydipsie. Le diagnostic d'hypernatrémie hypodipsique/adipsique reposait sur les principales conclusions de l'absence d'abreuvement spontané malgré l'hypernatrémie et un état hyperosmolaire (444,8 mOsm/kg, intervalle de référence de 280 à 310 mOsm/kg). L'IRM du cerveau a révélé des anomalies anatomiques multifocales sévères de la calotte crânienne rostrale et du prosencéphale évoquant une porencéphalie encéphaloclastique. Objective: Primary objectives of this study were to determine presenting complaints, physical examination, clinicopathologic findings, and hospitalization time of dogs with spontaneous hypoadrenocorticism presenting with critical disease; and to compare those end points to dogs with a more stable presentation. Secondary objectives were to evaluate the shock index and to identify precipitating stressors. Animals: Eighty-four dogs at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine between 1998 and 2018 were included. Procedure: Data were retrieved from the medical records. Results: Collapse and depression were more common among critically ill dogs. Hyperlactatemia was rare despite a diagnosis of hypovolemic shock, and a shock index was ineffective in this patient subset. Isosthenuria, total hypocalcemia, and more severe acidosis were more common (P < 0.05) in critical dogs. Owner separation was the most common precipitating stressor. Conclusion and clinical relevance: We concluded that the critical Addisonian dog has unique characteristics that may aid in early disease identification.

Les objectifs secondaires étaient d'évaluer l'indice de choc et d'identifier les facteurs de stress déclencheurs. Animaux: Quatre-vingt-quatre chiens du Western College of Veterinary Medicine entre 1998 et 2018 ont été inclus. Procédure: Les données ont été extraites des dossiers médicaux. Résultats: L'effondrement et la dépression étaient plus fréquents chez les chiens gravement malades. L'hyperlactatémie était rare malgré un diagnostic de choc hypovolémique, et un indice de choc était inefficace dans ce sous-groupe de patients. L'isosthénurie, l'hypocalcémie totale et l'acidose plus grave étaient plus fréquentes (P < 0,05) chez les chiens critiques. In humans, post-traumatic hypopituitarism (PTHP) is a common complication of traumatic brain injury, with the most frequently reported hormonal deficiencies resulting in hyposomatotropism and hypogonadism, followed by hypothyroidism, hypocortisolism, and central diabetes insipidus. To date, PTHP has rarely been reported in cats, and the reported cases often describe a single hormone deficiency. This report details an approximately 7-month-old cat with a history of suspected traumatic brain injury at 5 wk of age, that presented with growth retardation (1.53 kg) and polyuria-polydipsia. Thyroid panel, thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulation test, thyroid scan with Technetium-99, repeat measurement of serum IGF-1, resting cortisol, endogenous ACTH concentration, and ACTH stimulation testing were performed. The cat was diagnosed with presumptive PTHP leading to hyposomatotropism, hypothyroidism, central diabetes insipidus, and hypogonadism. In this case, treatment of the hypothyroidism and central diabetes insipidus were successful. Hyposomatotropism and hypogonadism were not treated. Although reported feline PTHP cases have described a single hormone deficiency, this report details a cat with presumptive PTHP leading to hyposomatotropism, hypothyroidism, central diabetes insipidus, and hypogonadism. Attention should be paid to the potential for the development of PTHP in cats secondary to traumatic brain injury. Key clinical message: Post-traumatic hypopituitarism in cats can lead to multiple hormone deficiencies, leading to hyposomatotropism, hypothyroidism, central diabetes insipidus, and hypogonadism.


Insuffisances hormonales hypophysaires multiples chez un chaton : hyposomatotropisme, hypothyroïdie, diabète insipide central et hypogonadisme. En médecine humaine, l'hypopituitarisme post-traumatisme crânien (HPPT) est une complication fréquente après un trauma crânien. Les insuffisances hormonales les plus fréquemment rapportées sont l'hyposomatotropisme et l'hypogonadisme, suivis de l'hypothyroïdie, de l'hypocortisolisme et du diabète insipide central. À ce jour, l'HPPT a rarement été décrit chez le chat, et les cas publiés décrivent bien souvent une déficience hormonale unique. Dans le cas présent, un chat âgé d'environ 7 mois, avec un antécédent de trauma crânien suspecté à l'âge de 5 semaines, a été présenté avec un retard de croissance (1,53 kg) et un syndrome polyurie-polydipsique. Les examens d'endocrinologie complémentaires incluaient le dosage des hormones thyroïdiennes, la stimulation de l'hypophyse par la thyrolibérine, une scintigraphie thyroïdienne (Technetium-99), le dosage de l'IGF-1, du cortisol basal, de la concentration d'ACTH endogène, et un test de stimulation à l'ACTH. Le chat a été diagnostiqué de manière présomptive avec un HPPT causant de multiples insuffisances hormonales hypophysaires : hyposomatotropisme, hypothyroïdie, diabète insipide central et hypogonadisme. Chez ce chat, le traitement de l'hypothyroïdie et du diabète insipide central a été réussi. L'hyposomatotropisme et l'hypogonadisme n'ont pas été traités. Alors que les rapports de cas publiés sur l'HPPT félin décrivent souvent une seule déficience hormonale, ce chat a été diagnostiqué avec de multiples insuffisances hormonales hypophysaires. A 6-year-old castrated male Labradoodle was referred in uncompensated hypovolemic shock, with a 72-h history of lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea that had acutely worsened with subsequent development of profuse hemorrhagic diarrhea in the last 24 h after a visit to the groomer. In most respects this case was classic for a patient with a primary hypoadrenocortical crisis. After initial attempts to address hypovolemia and refractory hypotension, no clinical improvement was seen, and the respiratory rate had increased acutely to 80 bpm with crackles detected on thoracic auscultation and serosanguineous fluid began draining from the nose and mouth. An arterial blood gas sample while breathing room air revealed moderate hypoxemia (PaO2 59.9: RI 95-100 mmHg), an elevated alveolar-arterial (A-a) gradient at 54.7 (RI < 15 mmHg) and a PaO2:FiO2 ratio of 285 mmHg. Thoracic radiographs revealed severe bilateral alveolar lung pattern largely limited to the perihilar and caudodorsal lung fields. The radiographic findings, along with signs of ongoing hypovolemia, the lack of evidence of typical long-standing acquired cardiac disease, and the rapid resolution of the pulmonary edema without the need for diuretics or long-term cardiac medications supported non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. The proposed cause of the non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema was speculated to be neurogenically mediated. Oxygen supplementation along with mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid replacement therapy was sufficient for the management of the non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema in this case.

BACKGROUND: Historical and recent literature disagree on whether a higher PO 131 I dosage, compared to IV or SC routes, is required for successful resolution of spontaneous hyperthyroidism in cats, necessitating investigation into the effect of PO and injectable radioactive iodine administration on % thyroidal radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU). HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of PO and SC routes of 123 I administration on paired % thyroidal RAIU in euthyroid cats. Specifically, a 1.5-fold difference (50% relative change) was hypothesized, which in absolute terms can be expressed as a 3.25% increase in the mean %RAIU of 7.04% after PO 123 I administration to 10.56% after SC dosing. ANIMALS: Seven healthy euthyroid teaching-research colony cats. METHODS: A randomized, radiologist-blinded crossover study comparing %RAIU after PO and SC 123 I administration. RESULTS: Percentage thyroidal RAIU values (mean ± SD; 95% confidence interval) after PO (4.81% ± 1.63%; 3.30%-6.23%) and SC (5.26% ± 2.43%; 3.01%-7.51%) 123 I administration were associated with a median within-pair absolute difference of 0.2% (range: min, 0.1%-max, 4.9%). Statistical significance was not achieved (P = .45). Six of 7 cats had a within-pair absolute difference of 0.1% to 0.9% (relative change of 4%-20%), but a single outlier cat had a within-pair absolute difference of 4.9% (relative change of 108%). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: This study did not detect an effect of 123 I administration route on paired % thyroidal RAIU in euthyroid cats. However, a type 2 statistical error due to small sample size is possible.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a retroesophagoscopic approach (ROSA) to nasopharyngoscopy and compare it with the conventional retroflexed endoscopic approach (REA). ANIMALS: 36 feline cadavers and 2 client-owned cats with nasopharyngeal disorders. PROCEDURES: 36 veterinarians participated in the experimental portion of the study involving feline cadavers. Each veterinarian performed the ROSA and REA to nasopharyngoscopy on a feline cadaver once, attempting to identify and biopsy 2 landmarks (soft palate and choanae) with each approach while time was recorded. Numeric scales were used to measure perceived ease of use and image quality for both techniques. Data were compared between approaches by an independent statistician. The ROSA approach was also used as part of the diagnostic workup for the 2 client-owned cats. RESULTS: 35 of the 36 (97%) veterinarians were able to identify and biopsy both landmarks using the ROSA, whereas 21 (58%) veterinarians were able to visualize both landmarks using the REA and 19 (53%) successfully biopsied the landmarks. Image quality for the soft palate was scored higher with the ROSA (median score, 7.5/10) than with the REA (4.5/10). The ROSA was fast and easy to perform. This approach was also successfully performed in the 2 client-owned cats with nasopharyngeal disorders, with no complications reported. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The ROSA was found to be a fast, effective, and easy alternative endoscopic technique for assessment of the nasopharynx in cats. This approach may allow use of various instruments that could be relevant for interventional procedures. However, the ROSA was also invasive and should be considered for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes for selected indications only when REA is unsuccessful.

Background: With the limited options available for therapy to treat invasive fungal infections (IFI), radioimmunotherapy (RIT) can potentially offer an effective alternative treatment. Microorganism-specific monoclonal antibodies have shown promising results in the experimental treatment of fungal, bacterial, and viral infections, including our recent and encouraging results from treating mice infected with Blastomyces dermatitidis with 213Bi-labeled antibody 400-2 to (1→3)-ß-glucan. In this work, we performed a safety study of 213Bi-400-2 antibody in healthy dogs as a prelude for a clinical trial in companion dogs with acquired invasive fungal infections and later on in human patients with IFI. Methods: Three female beagle dogs (≈6.1 kg body weight) were treated intravenously with 155.3, 142.5, or 133.2 MBq of 213Bi-400-2 given as three subfractions over an 8 h period. RBC, WBC, platelet, and blood serum biochemistry parameters were measured periodically for 6 months post injection. Results: No significant acute or long-term side effects were observed after RIT injections; only a few parameters were mildly and transiently outside reference change value limits, and a transient atypical morphology was observed in the circulating lymphocyte population of two dogs. Conclusions: These results demonstrate the safety of systemic 213Bi-400-2 administration in dogs and provide encouragement to pursue evaluation of RIT of IFI in companion dogs.

Ozone is a toxic and highly reactive gaseous oxidizing chemical with well-documented adverse health effects in humans. On the basis of animal and human data, environmental guidelines and air quality standards recommend a threshold for exposure of no more than 0.063 ppm of ozone (daily concentrations). This research describes a standardized sensitive model of sterile murine lung inflammation induced by exposing mice to acute (0, 4 or 24 hr), yet low, levels of ozone (0.005, 0.05 or 0.5 ppm), one that are below the current recommendations for what is considered a safe or "ambient" ozone concentration for humans. Ozone led to concentration and time-dependent phlogistic cell death in the bronchoalveolar lavage, lung epithelial damage and hemorrhage. Interestingly, we observed distinct large bright CD11b positive cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage, upregulation of lung vascular and alveolar ATP synthase as well as plasminogen and bronchiolar angiostatin expression in ozone-exposed mice, platelet and neutrophil accumulation in the lung vasculature and an eotaxin-2, IL-16, CXCL5, CXCL12, and CXCL13 dominant inflammatory response leading to lung injury. Using a fluorescent intravital microscopy set up, we quantified ozone-induced extensive alveolar cellular damage. We observed ozone-induced actin filament disorganization, perturbed respiratory mechanics, acute suppression of the alveolar reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and mitochondrial potential in ventilated lungs. We present evidence of systemic, as well as pulmonary toxicity, at 40-fold lower ozone concentrations than previously reported in mice. The findings are important in establishing a sensitive means of quantifying structural and functional lung disorganization following exposure to an aerosolized pollutant, even at levels of ozone exposure previously thought to be safe in humans.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate blood types of domestic cats in two cities in Western Canada (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Calgary, Alberta), as well as to determine the risk of mismatched transfusion and neonatal isoerythrolysis. Several cat studies around the world have shown variability in the prevalence of blood types in domestic and pedigree cats. Canadian data based on feline blood types is based out of Montreal. In this study the cohort of cats revealed a higher than anticipated prevalence; of 5% type B and 0.6% AB blood types. In our study, blood typing was performed in 400 domestic cats; 200 in Saskatoon and 200 in Calgary. Blood typing was performed using the gel tube method and the risk of transfusion mismatch (MT) was estimated by adding the risk of a major transfusion reaction and the risk of a minor transfusion reaction. The risk of neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI) was estimated according to the equation (p2)(q2) + 2pq(q2), with q being the b allele frequency and p = 1 - q. There was an identical frequency for feline blood types in both Saskatoon and Calgary cats, with 96% type A, 4% type B, and 0% AB. Based on these percentages, the risks of MT and NI in domestic cats were 7.6 and 4 % respectively. The frequency of type B cats in the population was similar to that in the previous Canadian study. These results demonstrate regional differences in prevalence of type B blood in domestic shorthairs across the world and serve to reinforce recommendations to blood type prior to transfusion or mating.

Invasive fungal infections (IFI) cause devastating morbidity and mortality, with the number of IFIs more than tripling since 1979. Our laboratories were the first to demonstrate that radiolabeled microorganism-specific monoclonal antibodies are highly effective for treatment of experimental fungal, bacterial and viral infections. Later we proposed to utilize surface expressed pan-antigens shared by major IFI-causing pathogens such as beta-glucans as RIT targets. Here we evaluated in vivo RIT targeting beta-glucan in Blastomyces dermatitidis which causes serious infections in immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals and in companion dogs. B. dermatitidis cells were treated with the 400-2 antibody to (1→3)-ß-glucans radiolabeled with the beta-emitter 177Lutetium (177Lu) and alpha-emitter 213Bismuth (213Bi) and the efficacy of cell kill was determined by colony forming units (CFUs). To determine the antigen-specific localization of the 400-2 antibody in vivo, C57BL6 mice were infected intratracheally with 2 × 105 B. dermatitidis cells and given 111In-400-2 antibody 24 h later. To evaluate the killing of B. dermatitidis cells with RIT, intratracheally infected mice were treated with 150 µCi 213Bi-400-2 and their lungs analyzed for CFUs 96 h post-infection. 213Bi-400-2 proved to be more effective in killing B. dermatitidis cells in vitro than 177Lu-400-2. Three times more 111In-400-2 accumulated in the lungs of infected mice, than in the non-infected ones. 213Bi-400-2 lowered the fungal burden in the lungs of infected mice more than 2 logs in comparison with non-treated infected controls. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the ability of an anti-(1-3)-beta-D-glucan antibody armed with an alpha-emitter 213Bi to selectively kill B. dermatitidis cells in vitro and in vivo. These first in vivo results of the effectiveness of RIT targeting pan-antigens on fungal pathogens warrant further investigation.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease for which no simple antemortem diagnostic assay is available. A new polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test has recently been developed that targets the spike protein region of the FIP virus (FIPV) and can identify specific mutations (M1030L or S1032A), the presence of which indicates a shift from feline enteric coronavirus (FeCV) to FIPV. This test will only be useful in the geographical region of interest, however, if the FIP viruses contain these mutations. The primary objective of this study was to determine the presence of the M1030L or S1032A mutations in FeCV derived from stool samples from a selected group of healthy cats from households and shelters and determine how many of these cats excrete FeCV. The secondary objective was to evaluate how often these specific FIPV mutations were present in tissue samples derived from cats diagnosed with FIP at postmortem examination. Feline enteric coronavirus (FeCV) was detected in 46% of fecal samples (86/185), all were FeCV type 1, with no difference between household or shelter cats. Only 45% of the FIPV analyzed contained the previously reported M1030L or S1032A mutations. It should be noted that, as the pathological tissue samples were opportunistically obtained and not specifically obtained for PCR testing, caution is warranted in interpreting these data.


La péritonite infectieuse féline (FIP) est une maladie fatale pour laquelle il n'existe pas de test diagnostique ante-mortem simple. Une nouvelle épreuve d'amplification en chaîne par la polymérase (PCR) a récemment été développée et qui vise la région de la protéine de spicule du virus FIP (FIPV) et peut identifier les mutations spécifiques (M1030L ou S1032A), la présence desquelles indique un glissement du coronavirus entérique félin (FeCV) vers le FIPV. Cette épreuve sera utile uniquement dans la région géographique d'intérêt, toutefois, si les virus FIP ont ces mutations. L'objectif premier de la présente étude était de déterminer la présence des mutations M1030L ou S1032A chez FeCV obtenu d'échantillons de fèces provenant d'un groupe sélectionné de chats en santé issus de maisonnée et refuges et de déterminer combien de ces chats excrètent FeCV. L'objectif secondaire était d'évaluer à quelle fréquence ces mutations spécifiques de FIPV étaient présentes dans des échantillons de tissu provenant de chats diagnostiqués avec FIP lors d'examen post-mortem. Le FeCV fut détecté dans 46 % des échantillons fécaux (86/185), tous de type FeCV 1, et aucune différence notée entre les chats de maisonnée ou de refuge. Seulement 45 % des FIPV analysés contenaient les mutations M1030L ou S1032A rapportées précédemment. Il faut noter que, étant donné que les échantillons de tissus pathologiques furent obtenus de manière opportuniste et non spécifiquement obtenus pour analyse par PCR, l'interprétation des résultats est à faire avec précaution.(Traduit par Docteur Serge Messier).

OBJECTIVES: Alpha(α)2-agonist administration has been documented to increase blood glucose concentrations in many species. The aim of this study was to further describe the effect of dexmedetomidine on glucose and its regulatory hormones in healthy cats. METHODS: A randomized crossover study using eight healthy cats with a 14 day washout period was used to assess the effect of dexmedetomidine (10 µg/kg IV) and saline on glucose, cortisol, insulin, glucagon and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations at 0, 20, 60, 120 and 180 mins post-administration. Glucose:insulin ratios were calculated for each time point. RESULTS: Within the dexmedetomidine group, significant differences (P <0.05) were detected: increased median (range) blood glucose concentrations at 60 mins (11.55 mmol/l [5.9-16.6 mmol/l]) and 120 mins (12.0 mmol/l [6.1-13.8 mmol/l]) compared with baseline (6.05 mmol/l [4.8-13.3 mmol/l]); decreased glucagon concentrations at 120 mins (3.8 pmol/l [2.7-8.8 pmol/l]) and 180 mins (4.7 pmol/l [2.1-8.2 pmol/l]) compared with baseline (11.85 pmol/l [8.3-17.2 pmol/l]); decreased NEFA concentrations at 60 mins (0.281 mmol/l [0.041-1.357 mmol/l]) and 120 mins (0.415 mmol/l [0.035-1.356 mmol/l]) compared with baseline (0.937 mmol/l [0.677-1.482 mmol/l]); and significantly larger (P <0.05) glucose:insulin ratios at 60 mins compared with baseline. Insulin and cortisol concentrations were not significantly changed after dexmedetomidine administration. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Feline practitioners should be aware of the endocrine effects associated with the use of α2-agonists, particularly when interpreting blood glucose concentrations. The transient effects of dexmedetomidine on glucose homeostasis are unlikely to significantly affect clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Infectious canine hepatitis is a rarely encountered disease, that is caused by Canine Adenovirus-1. Clinical signs can vary dramatically, and neurological signs are rarely seen. Neurological manifestation of this disease is rarely reported in the veterinary literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-week-old, male entire Husky cross puppy presented for a one-day history of abnormal neurological behaviour (circling, ataxia, vocalization and obtund mentation). The puppy was euthanized shortly after presentation due to rapid deterioration. Histopathology raised concerns for Canine Adenovirus 1 (CAdV-1) based on vasculitis in the brain and intranuclear inclusion bodies in endothelial cell and hepatocytes; immunohistochemistry on brain tissue confirmed CAdV-1 infection. CONCLUSIONS: This report discusses possible routes of infection and manifestations of adenovirus infections causing neurologic signs. It also provides a timely reminder that CAdV-1 should be considered a differential in unvaccinated dogs that present with neurological signs. Further studies are required to better understand the neurotrophic tendencies of this virus.

BACKGROUND: Both diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity are common in cats. The adipokines leptin, adiponectin, resistin and omentin are thought to have important roles in human obesity and glucose homeostasis; however, their functions in the pathophysiology of feline diabetes mellitus and obesity are poorly understood. We determined whether sexual dimorphism exists for circulating concentrations of these adipokines, whether they are associated with adiposity, and whether they correlate with basic indices of insulin sensitivity in cats. Healthy, client-owned male and female cats that were either ideal weight or obese were recruited into the study. Fasting blood glucose, fructosamine, cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin and plasma concentrations of adipokines were evaluated. RESULTS: Obese cats had greater serum concentrations of glucose and triglycerides than ideal weight cats, but fructosamine and cholesterol concentrations did not differ between groups. Body weight and body mass index were greater in male than female cats, but circulating metabolite cocentrations were similar between sexes of both the ideal weight and obese groups. Plasma concentrations of insulin and leptin were greater in obese than ideal weight cats, with reciprocal reduction in adiponectin concentrations in obese cats; there were no sex differences in these hormones. Interestingly, plasma omentin concentrations were greater in male than female cats but with no differences between obese and ideal weight states. CONCLUSION: Together our findings suggest that rather than gender, body weight and adiposity are more important determinants of circulating concentrations of the adipokines leptin and adiponectin. On the contrary, the adipokine omentin is not affected by body weight or adiposity but instead exhibits sexual dimorphism in cats.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate agreement of 4 methods (Tikhonov gamma variate adaptive regularization of plasma concentration-time curve fitting applied to technetium Tc 99m diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid [99mTc-DTPA] plasma clearance [Tk-GV], plasma clearance of exogenous creatinine [CrCL], Gates gamma camera-based measurement method with 99mTc-DTPA renal clearance and dynamic scintigraphy [GTS], and iohexol renal clearance assessed with dynamic CT with Patlak plotting [CT-Pp]) for measuring glomerular filtration rates (GFR) in healthy cats. ANIMALS: 7 healthy, laboratory-raised cats. PROCEDURES: Each method for measuring GFR was performed twice in 7 cats at 24-day intervals. The Wilcoxon signed-rank sum test was used to compare the results obtained from the 14 studies for each method. Results from the 4 methods were assessed for agreement and correlation. RESULTS: The median GFR values were 2.75, 2.83, 3.14, and 4.26 mL/min/kg, for Tk-GV, CT-Pp, plasma CrCL, and GTS, respectively. Analysis with Wilcoxon signed-rank sum tests identified significant pairwise differences between results obtained with the Tk-GV versus the plasma CrCL method, the Tk-GV versus the GTS method, and the plasma CrCL versus the GTS method. The least variable method was Tk-GV, with an SD of 1.27 (mL/min/kg). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Findings indicated that Tk-GV yielded GFR measurements comparable with those obtained with CT-Pp, plasma CrCL, and GTS; however, the Tk-GV method yielded the tightest range of results among the methods evaluated.

CASE DESCRIPTION Three 21-week-old sexually intact female sibling domestic shorthair cats were brought to an emergency clinic because of signs of sudden respiratory distress that were noted by the owner after the cats had been confined for approximately 10 hours in a room with an operating ozone-generating air purifier. No other potential toxicant exposures were reported. CLINICAL FINDINGS On initial examination, the 3 cats were severely dyspneic and tachypneic. Pulmonary crackles were audible on thoracic auscultation. Thoracic radiography revealed a marked peribronchial, unstructured interstitial pulmonary pattern that coalesced to a patchy alveolar pattern, consistent with noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME A diuretic (furosemide, 2 mg/kg [0.9 mg/lb], IV) and bronchodilator (terbutaline sulfate, 0.01 mg/kg [0.005 mg/lb], IM) were administered, and supplemental oxygen was provided by placing the cats in an oxygen cage at 80% oxygen saturation. By 24 hours after placement in the oxygen cage, all cats had unremarkable respiratory rates and thoracic auscultation findings. Complete resolution of the respiratory signs and radiographic pulmonary lesions was achieved within 48 to 72 hours after initial evaluation. At a recheck examination performed 3 months after initial evaluation, the cats remained free of respiratory signs, and no radiographic pulmonary lesions were detected. CLINICAL RELEVANCE To the authors' knowledge, this was the first reported case of pulmonary toxicosis believed to have been caused by ozone exposure in cats. Associated respiratory signs were successfully and rapidly reversed following oxygen supplementation and medical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia, dysregulated adipokine secretion and alteration in glucagon and adropin concentrations are important obesity-related factors in the pathophysiology of human Type 2 diabetes; however, their roles in the pathophysiology of feline diabetes mellitus are relatively unknown. Here, we determined the concentrations of circulating leptin, adiponectin, pro-inflammatory cytokines, glucagon, adropin, triglycerides, and cholesterol, in non-diabetic lean and overweight cats and newly diagnosed diabetic cats. Client-owned cats were recruited and assigned into 3 study groups: lean, overweight and diabetic. Fasting blood samples were analyzed in lean, overweight and diabetic cats at baseline and 4 weeks after consumption of high protein/low carbohydrate standardized diet. RESULTS: Serum concentrations of triglycerides were greater in diabetics at baseline and were increased in both diabetic and overweight cats at 4 weeks. Plasma leptin concentrations were greater in diabetic and overweight at baseline and 4 weeks, whereas adiponectin was lower in diabetics compared to lean and overweight cats at baseline and 4 weeks. Diabetics had greater baseline plasma glucagon concentrations compared to lean, lower adropin than overweight at 4 weeks, and lower IL-12 concentrations at 4 weeks than baseline. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that feline obesity and diabetes mellitus are characterized by hypertriglyceridemia and hyperleptinemia; however, diabetic cats have significantly lower adiponectin and adropin compared to overweight cats. Thus, despite having similar body condition, overweight and diabetic cats have differential circulating concentrations of adiponectin and adropin.

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of trephination of the frontal sinus and injection of antifungal cream using a medical bone marrow drill in dogs. Results were compared with frontal sinus trephination using a standard surgical technique. Bilateral trephination of the frontal sinuses was carried out in the heads of 11 cadavers using a medical bone marrow drill and a surgical bone chuck. The time taken to carry out the procedure using both techniques was compared. Before and after injection of antifungal cream into the frontal sinuses, computed-tomography (CT) scanning was done to assess for iatrogenic trauma and to determine the degree to which the sinuses were filled with each technique and evaluate the diffusion of the cream into the nasal cavity of each dog. The mean volume of the sinuses was 8.8 mL (3.1 to 14.3 mL). Trephination, flushing, and injecting of antifungal cream were significantly faster using the medical technique. There was no significant difference in the mean filling of the frontal sinuses between the medical (82.7%) and the surgical (82.4%) technique (P-value = 0.3). Filling of the nasal cavity was classified as very good in 6/11 cases, with evidence of trauma caused by the surgical trephination technique in 1 head. Findings suggest that use of the medical bone marrow drill is highly feasible for frontal sinus trephination. Injection of antifungal cream into the frontal sinuses using the bone marrow needle resulted in good diffusion into the ipsilateral nasal cavity and could be used to treat aspergillosis when debridement or sinusoscopy is not deemed necessary.


L'objectif de cette étude est d'évaluer l'utilisation d'une perceuse de moelle osseuse pour la trépanation du sinus frontal et l'injection de crème antifungique chez le chien. Les résultats sont comparés à la trépanation du sinus par une technique chirurgicale classique. Les sinus frontaux de 11 têtes de cadavres de chiens ont été trépanés, en utilisant une perceuse pour moelle osseuse ou un trépan chirurgical. La durée de la procédure avec chaque technique est comparée. Les sinus frontaux sont examinés par tomodensitométrie avant et après injection de crème antifungique, afin de noter de potentielles lésions iatrogéniques, d'évaluer le degré de remplissage du sinus frontal pour chaque technique, et d'apprécier la diffusion de la crème dans les cavité nasales pour chaque chien. Le volume moyen des sinus était de 8,8 ml (3,1 à 14,3 ml). La trépanation, le flush et l'injection de crème antifungique étaient significativement plus rapide avec la perceuse médicale. Il n'y avait pas de différence significative entre le remplissage moyen des sinus par la technique médicale (82,7 %) ou chirurgicale (82,4 %) (P = 0,3). Le remplissage des cavités nasales était qualifié de très bon dans 6 cas sur 11. Une lésion iatrogénique fut constatée dans un cas, avec la technique chirurgicale. Ces résultats semblent montrer qu'une perceuse médicale pour moelle osseuse est facilement utilisable pour trépaner le sinus frontal chez le chien. L'injection de crème dans le sinus frontal par le trocart de la perceuse pour moelle osseuse permet un bon remplissage de la cavité nasale ipsilatérale, et pourrait donc être utilisée dans le cadre du traitement de l'aspergillose canine, dans les cas où un débridement du sinus n'est pas nécessaire.(Traduit par Docteur Serge Messier).
