RESUMO

In many Western jurisdictions, criminal suspects undergoing police interrogations have the right to remain silent. In this experiment, we examined the effects of remaining silent during police questioning on laypersons' perceptions of a suspect. Participants (N = 126) read one of three mock-interview transcripts (i.e. admission, denial or silence) and indicated the extent to which they agreed or disagreed that a male suspect in a missing person case was guilty, cooperative, trustworthy and rational. Participants expressed stronger agreement that the suspect was guilty when he admitted guilt than when he denied involvement or remained silent. When the suspect remained silent, participants viewed the suspect as less cooperative than when the suspect denied or admitted guilt and as less rational than when the suspect denied committing the crime. Our findings provide some support for the notion that remaining silent during police questioning may be viewed unfavourably by external observers.

RESUMO

Elucidating the effects of negative emotion on eyewitness memory is an important part of understanding how witnesses remember and report criminal events. Extant research in this area has been inconsistent in its methodology and conclusions, thus warranting further empirical investigation. In the current experiment, participants (N = 204) viewed either a Negative or Neutral version of a video of a staged social interaction and had their memory assessed either immediately or 1 week later. Memory assessment consisted of both recall and recognition (lineup identification) components. The Negative video group showed enhanced recall for some aspects of the video compared to the Neutral group, but no enhancement (or impairment) of lineup identification performance. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMO

Although many forms of victimization are repeated (e.g., domestic violence), we know relatively little about the perceived credibility of adult claimants who allege repeated maltreatment. We examined the effects of Event Frequency (Single vs. Repeated), Language Specificity (Episodic vs. Generic), and Disclosure Delay (Immediate vs. Delayed) on laypersons' perceptions of claimant credibility. Participants (N = 649) read a mock interview transcript and provided subjective ratings (e.g., credibility, likelihood of suspect guilt, claimant responsibility). When the alleged abuse occurred a single time (vs. repeatedly), participants rated the interviewee as less blameworthy but no more (or less) credible. Exploratory findings indicated that female participants viewed the interviewee as more credible and less responsible than did male participants.

RESUMO

The effect of the suspect-corroborator relationship and number of corroborators on alibi assessments was examined across two experiments. In both experiments, we explored the effect of relationship type and number of corroborators on believability, likelihood of guilt, and decision to retain the suspect as the primary suspect; we increased the social distance between the alibi provider and suspect and the size of difference between the number of corroborators in Experiment 2. Collectively, our results support Olson and Wells' taxonomy of alibi believability as (a) any form of person evidence mitigates pre-alibi judgments of guilt (although there is a ceiling effect), and (b) alibis corroborated by non-motivated others were judged more favourably than those corroborated by motivated others. Our results lend support toward extending the original taxonomy to include the number of corroborators. The implications for the alibi assessments are discussed.

RESUMO

In the current study the impact of victim age, crime seriousness, and social influence on perceptions of alibi believability, victim responsibility, confidence, and emotions was examined. Participants (N = 141) read a brief crime-scenario vignette and a summary of the suspect's alibi, followed by a series of closed-ended questions. The alibi was held constant across all conditions. Eighty percent of participants rated the suspect's alibi as moderately believable or less than moderately believable. A significant interaction of Victim Age × Crime Seriousness on perceptions of alibi believability was found. Additionally, those individuals who reported greater feelings of certain negative emotions tended to rate the crime as being more serious and the suspect's alibi as less believable. Furthermore, participants' self-reported feelings of sadness, pleasure, and fear could significantly predict participants' alibi believability ratings. These results offer additional support for the legal relevance of emotions, particularly with respect to alibi assessment.

RESUMO

As consumers assume a larger percentage of their healthcare costs, electronic payment systems can provide time savings on the front end and reduce bad consumer debt on the back end. Proponents say the systems increase staff efficiency and add a "green element to paper-strewn offices.

RESUMO

Five different hydrogen-bonded conformers of the dimer of 2-propanol have been characterized by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. In all observed species, the proton donor moiety adopts a gauche conformation. While in the gauche monomer a transient chirality takes place, all dimers are classical chiral systems. The Ubbelohde effect has been observed upon OH → OD isotopic substitution and its structural effects--a 5 mŠreduction of the O---O distance--have been quantitatively defined.

RESUMO

The antibacterial target enoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) reductase is a homotetrameric enzyme that catalyzes the last reductive step of fatty acid biosynthesis. In the present paper, four 2-(2-hydroxyphenoxy)phenol inhibitors, wherein the 4-position substituent varied from H to n-propyl, were studied to determine the contribution of the aliphatic chain to the binding to the wild-type (wt) enoyl-ACP reductase from Escherichia coli (FabI) and a drug-resistant mutant, (F203L)FabI, in which phenylalanine 203 is mutated to leucine. Thermodynamic parameters of ternary complex formation (enzyme-NAD(+)-inhibitor) were determined by isothermal titration calorimetry. The inhibitor affinity to wt FabI and (F203L)FabI increases with increasing aliphatic chain length, although the corresponding affinity for (F203L)FabI is lower, and also, it shows no detectable binding to the 4-H inhibitor. A distinguishing feature of inhibitor binding to either binary enzyme-NAD(+) complex is the apparent negative cooperativity for binding to the tetramer with half-site occupancy. For both enzymes, binding is enthalpy, DeltaH, driven. However, binding DeltaH becomes less favorable with increasing aliphatic chain length. Increases in affinity are found to be exclusively due to favorable changes in solvation entropy. Incremental changes in thermodynamic parameters within the series of inhibitors binding to wt FabI and (F203L)FabI are approximately the same. However, absolute differences between the two enzymes for binding to a given inhibitor are significant, suggesting different binding modes. This finding, coupled with a binding site conformation that is likely to be more rigid in the mutant, appears to result in the drug resistance of (F203L)FabI.

RESUMO

This study examined the concurrent validity of the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) in relation to the Depression (D) scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) and addressed a gap in the literature with respect to diagnostic discrimination. The participants were persons on probation or parole. Although women were more depressed than men on the SDS, gender did not interact with SDS as a predictor in a logistic regression analysis. The SDS was found to be the primary discriminating variable in distinguishing depressed from nondepressed participants. In addition, the SDS contributed significant incremental validity over the D scale and showed greater accuracy in identifying nondepressed individuals.

RESUMO

The 10-bromobenzocycloheptapyridyl farnesyl transferase inhibitor (FTI) Sch-66336 (1) is currently under clinical evaluation for the treatment of human cancers. During structure-activity relationship development leading to 1, 10-bromobenzocycloheptapyridyl FTIs were found to be more potent than analogous compounds lacking the 10-Br substituent. This potency enhancement was believed to be due, in part, to an increase in conformational rigidity as the 10-bromo substituent could restrict the conformation of the appended C(11) piperidyl substituent in an axial orientation. A novel and potent class of FTIs, represented by indolocycloheptapyridine Sch-207758 [(+)-10a], have been designed based on this principle. Although structural and thermodynamic results suggest that entropy plays a crucial role in the increased potency observed with (+)-10a through conformational constraints and solvation effects, the results also indicate that the indolocycloheptapyridine moiety in (+)-10a provides increased hydrophobic interactions with the protein through the addition of the indole group. This report details the X-ray structure and the thermodynamic and pharmacokinetic profiles of (+)-10a, as well as the synthesis of indolocycloheptapyridine FTIs and their potencies in biochemical and biological assays.

RESUMO

Item content of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) was modified to make it more appropriate for young persons. The resulting test was found to have lower internal consistency than the adult MAST, but the elimination of five items with comparatively poor psychometric properties yielded an acceptable alpha coefficient of .73. A unitary factor model for the adolescent MAST was not confirmed; indeed, the revised test appeared to be factorially complex. Recommendations for further revisions are discussed.
