BACKGROUND: Obesity epidemic is related to industrialization and urbanization that have lead to changes in nutrition, lifestyle and socio-economic status. However, information on the trajectory of the obesity epidemic in populations experiencing rapid economic development is limited. We therefore investigate trends in obesity from 2002 to 2010 in a southern Chinese population experiencing world's fastest economic development. METHODS: Between 2002 and 2010 four standardized surveys were conducted in a population of 85 million residents in Guangdong, China. Multistage cluster sampling was adopted to recruit representative samples. Weight, height and waist circumference of the participants were measured in a standardized way. The analysis included residents aged between 18 and 69 years. The number of participants included in the present analysis for Surveys conducted in 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010 were 13058, 7646, 6441 and 8575, respectively. RESULTS: From year 2002 to 2010, the age-standardized Body mass index (BMI) insignificantly changed from 21.7 kg m(-2) to 22.3 kg m(-2), and the prevalence of overweight and overall obesity from 15.8 to 16.6% (both P>0.05). The age-standardized waist circumference increased from 73.7 to 78.4 cm, and prevalence of abdominal obesity increased from 12.9 to 23.7% (both P<0.001). In urban areas, BMI and overall obesity changed little during the 8-year period (BMI increased from 22.6 to 22.7 kg m(-2) and overall obesity changed from 23.7 to 21.4%), whereas there were slight increases of the same in rural areas (BMI increased from 20.8 to 22.1 kg m(-2)and overall obesity increased from 8.2 to 13.3%). Waist circumference and abdominal obesity increased significantly in both areas, but the increase was more pronounced in rural areas (in urban area, waist circumference increased from 75.1 to 78.5 cm and abdominal obesity from 16.8 to 26.5%; in rural area, waist circumference from 72.2 to 78.3 and abdominal obesity from 8.8 to 22.0%). CONCLUSIONS: BMI and overall obesity in this population, which has experienced the world's fastest economic development over the past three decades, has been leveling-off, while waist circumference and abdominal obesity, independent predictors of cardiovascular risk, have continued to rise. Our findings suggest that obesity epidemic transition in rapidly developing populations may be much faster than what has been observed in Western countries.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between severity of obesity at age 7 and age 15, age at onset of obesity, and parental body mass index (BMI) in obese children and adolescents. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study. SUBJECTS: Obese children (n = 231) and their parents (n = 462) from the Swedish National Childhood Obesity Centre. METHODS: Multivariate regression analyses were applied with severity of obesity (BMI standard deviation score (BMI SDS)) and onset of obesity as dependent variables. The effect of parental BMI was evaluated and in the final models adjusted for gender, parental education, age at onset of obesity, severity of obesity at age 7 and obesity treatment. RESULTS: For severity of obesity at age 7, a positive correlation with maternal BMI was indicated (P = 0.05). Severity of obesity at this age also showed a strong negative correlation with the age at onset of obesity. Severity of obesity at age 15 was significantly correlated with both maternal and paternal BMI (P < 0.01). In addition, BMI SDS at age 15 differed by gender (higher for boys) and was positively correlated with severity of obesity at age 7 and negatively correlated with treatment. Also, a negative correlation was indicated at this age for parental education. No correlation with age at onset was found at age 15. For age at onset of obesity there was no relevant correlation with parental BMI. Children within the highest tertile of the BMI SDS range were more likely to have two obese parents. CONCLUSION: The impact of parental BMI on the severity of obesity in children is strengthened as the child grows into adolescence, whereas the age at onset is probably of less importance than previously thought. The influence of parental relative weight primarily affects the severity of childhood obesity and not the timing.

Genotypes at the gliadin loci Gli-A1, Gli-B1, Gli-D1 and the high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit loci Glu-A1, Glu-B1, Glu-D1 were identified in 77 winter common wheat cultivars developed in the Central Forest Steppe of Ukraine in different periods of time. The highest level of variation was observed at the Gli-A1 locus. Predominant alleles (one or two per locus) were revealed. The comparison of allele frequencies in groups of cultivars developed in different periods of time (before 1996 and in 1996-2007) has demonstrated appearance of new alleles and change of frequencies of existing alleles at the storage protein loci. The high frequency of cultivars with the wheat-rye 1BL/1RS translocation was detected (about 40%). The wheat rye 1AL/1RS translocation was identified in six cultivars developed in the last decade. Four gliadin alleles, Gli-A1w (a marker for the 1AL/1RS translocation), Gli-A1x, Gli-A1y and Gli-B1x, were proposed for cataloging.

Denitrifying bacteria in soil generate nitric oxide (NO) from nitrite as a part of the nitrogen cycle, but little is known about NO production by commensal bacteria. We used a chemiluminescence assay to explore if human faeces and different representative gut bacteria are able to generate NO. Bacteria were incubated anaerobically in gas-tight bags, with or without nitrate or nitrite in the growth medium. In addition, luminal NO levels were measured in vivo in the intestines in germ-free and conventional rats, and in rats mono-associated with lactobacilli. We show that human faeces can generate NO after nitrate or nitrite supplementation. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria generated much NO from nitrite, but only a few of the tested strains produced NO from nitrate and at much lower levels. In contrast, Escherichia coli, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, and Clostridium difficile did not produce significant amounts of NO either with nitrate or nitrite. NO generation in the gut lumen was also observed in vivo in conventional rats but not in germ-free rats or in rats mono-associated with lactobacilli. We conclude that NO can be generated by the anaerobic gut flora in the presence of nitrate or nitrite. Future studies will reveal its biological significance in regulation of gastrointestinal integrity.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial colonization of the intestine early in life might have implications for allergy development. We studied early host-bacterial interactions in the gut by simultaneous measurements of hydrogen gas (H(2)) and faecal short chain fatty acid pattern (SCFAs), i.e. bacterial products, as well as of nitric oxide (NO), a marker of mucosal immune activation. METHODS: A novel minimally invasive technique was used for repeated measurements of luminal colonic H(2) and NO in 32 healthy newborn infants delivered vaginally or by Caesarean section. Luminal gas was sampled and analysed at five occasions: immediately after birth, day 1, days 3-5, 1 and 5-6 months after birth. RESULTS: Colonic H(2), NO and faecal SCFAs were undetectable at birth. The H(2) and SCFAs appeared within 24 h and continued to increase during the 6 months follow-up. Nitric oxide remained very low until 3-5 days after birth at which time it markedly increased. In some apparently healthy infants NO transiently reached levels similar to those seen in adults with inflammatory bowel disease. CONCLUSION: Intracolonic measurements of H(2) and NO may be useful to monitor the developmental colonization process as well as mucosal responses.

RESUMO

Analysis of alcohol-soluble protein (gliadin) patterns of a group of winter common wheat varieties from different breeding centers of Ukraine resulted in identification of six varieties with the rye 1AL/1RS translocation. The line 7086 AR also carries this translocation. The identified 1AL/1RS translocation is similar to that of the variety Amigo in the secalin pattern. The appearance of this translocation in varieties developed in different breeding centers of the forest-steppe of Ukraine indicates its involvement in coadaptive gene associations.

Inheritance of gliadin components in winter wheat has been studied by one-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Single F2 grains from 36 intervarietal hybrid combinations have been analysed. The genetic analysis has revealed blocks, including 1-6 gliadin components, which are inherited as individual mendelian traits. About 80 variants of blocks have been detected. On the basis of the allelism test they are grouped into 6 series in accordance with the number of known gliadin-coding loci located on chromosomes of the homoeologous groups 1 and 6. Each series includes 8-18 blocks controlled by different alleles of one gliadin-coding locus. Blocks of components have been confirmed to be inherited codominantly in accordance to the gene dose in the triploid endosperm. The highest similarity between members of one series is observed in groups of blocks controlled by chromosomes ID and 6D. On the contrary, many blocks controlled by chromosomes 1A and 1B have no bands in common. The presented catalogue of blocks of components may be used to make up gliadin genetic formulae and to compare electrophoregrams obtained by different authors. Blocks of gliadin components are suitable genetic markers for use in revealing and studying heterogeneity of wheat varieties, in tracing their origin, in identifying recombinations, translocations and substitutions of the genetic material and in solving many other problems of the origin, evolution and selection of hexaploid wheat.
