RESUMO

Green hydrogen, generated through the electrolysis of water, is a viable alternative to fossil fuels, although its adoption is hindered by the high costs associated with the catalysts. Among a wide variety of potential materials, binary nickel-palladium (NiPd) systems have garnered significant attention, particularly at the nanoscale, for their efficacious roles in catalyzing hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. However, our atom-level understanding of the descriptors that drive their energetic stability at the nanoscale remains largely incomplete. Here, we investigate by density functional theory calculations the descriptors that drives the stability of the NimPdn-m clusters for different sizes (n = 13, 27, 41) and compositions. To achieve our goals, a large number of trial configurations were generated and selected using data mining algorithms (k-means, t-SNE) and genetic algorithms, while the most important physical-chemical descriptors were identified using Spearman correlation analysis. We have found that core-shell formation, with the smaller Ni atoms lying in the center of the particle, plays a major role in the stabilization of the nanoalloys, and this effect causes the alloys to assume a icosahedral-fragment configuration (as the unary nickel cluster) instead of a fcc fragment (as the unary palladium cluster). However, the core-shell formation in this alloy is unique in that Pd poor compositions exhibit scattered Pd atoms on the surface. As the palladium content increases, this gives rise to the complete Pd shell. This stabilization mechanism is quantitatively supported by the different correlations observed in the number of Ni-Ni and Pd-Pd bonds with energy, in which the latter tends to decrease alloy stability. Furthermore, a notable trend is the correlation between the coordination number of Ni atoms with alloy stabilization, while the coordination of Pd atoms shows an inverse correlation.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common condition in critically ill children and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess the performance of point-of-care ultrasonography to predict AKI in children undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS: In this prospective study, consecutive children underwent kidney Doppler ultrasound examination within 24 h following cardiac surgery, and an experienced operator obtained both renal resistive index (RRI) and renal pulsatility index (RPI). AKI was defined by the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) criteria. The primary outcome was the diagnosis of severe AKI (KDIGO stage 2 or 3) on day 3. RESULTS: A total of 58 patients were included. Median age and weight were 12.9 months (IQR 6.0-37.9) and 7.36 kg (IQR 5.19-11.40), respectively. On day 3, 13 patients were classified as having AKI, of which 11 were severe. RRI could effectively predict AKI (area under the ROC curve [AUC] 0.83, 95% CI 0.71-0.92; p < 0.001) as well as RPI (AUC 0.81, 95% CI 0.69-0.90; p < 0.001). The optimal cutoff value for RRI was 0.85 (sensitivity, 73%; specificity, 83%; positive predictive value [PPV], 50%; and negative predictive value [NPV], 93%), while for RPI was 1.95 (sensitivity, 73%; specificity, 78%; PPV, 44%; and NPV, 92%). Similar results were found in the analysis for prediction on day 5. Significant correlations were found between Doppler-based variables and estimated GFR and furosemide dose on day 3. CONCLUSIONS: Kidney Doppler ultrasound may be a promising tool for predicting AKI in children undergoing cardiac surgery.

Cardiac output is an essential determinant of oxygen delivery, although unreliably measured on clinical examination and routine monitoring. Unfortunately, cardiac output monitoring is rarely performed in pediatric critical care medicine, with a limited availability of accurate methods for children. Herein, we report two pediatric cases in which noninvasive pulse-wave transit time-based cardiac output monitoring (esCCO, Nihon Kohden, Tokyo, Japan) was used. The esCCO system calculates cardiac output continuously by using the negative correlation between stroke volume and pulse wave transit time and requires only electrocardiogram monitoring, noninvasive blood pressure, and pulse oximetry signals. Before starting its use, esCCO should be calibrated, which can be done using patient information (gender, age, height, and body weight) or entering cardiac output values obtained by other methods. In both cases, when calibrations were performed using patient information, the agreement between esCCO and echocardiographic measurements was poor. However, after calibration with transthoracic echocardiography, the cardiac output values obtained by both methods remained similar after 2 hours and 18 hours. The results indicate that the esCCO system is suitable for use in children; however, further studies are needed to optimize its algorithm and determine its accuracy, precision, and trend in children.

Little is known about the effects of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity on resident colonic lamina propria (LP) macrophages (LPMs) function and metabolism. Here, we report that obesity and diabetes resulted in increased macrophage infiltration in the colon. These macrophages exhibited the residency phenotype CX3CR1hiMHCIIhi and were CD4-TIM4-. During HFD, resident colonic LPM exhibited a lipid metabolism gene expression signature that overlapped that used to define lipid-associated macrophages (LAMs). Via single-cell RNA sequencing, we identified a sub-cluster of macrophages, increased in HFD, that were responsible for the LAM signature. Compared to other macrophages in the colon, these cells were characterized by elevated glycolysis, phagocytosis, and efferocytosis signatures. CX3CR1hiMHCIIhi colonic resident LPMs had fewer lipid droplets (LDs) and decreased triacylglycerol (TG) content compared to equivalent cells in lean mice and exhibited increased phagocytic capacity, suggesting that HFD induces adaptive responses in LPMs to limit bacterial translocation.

The development of packaging films made from renewable raw materials, which cause low environmental impact, has gained attention due to their attractive properties, which have become an exciting option for synthetic films. In this study, cellulose micro/nanofibrils (MFC/NFC) films were produced with forest residues from the Amazon region and evaluated for their potential to generate alternative packaging to traditional plastic packaging. The MFC/NFC were obtained by mechanical fibrillation from fibers of açaí seeds (Euterpe oleracea), titica vine (Heteropsis flexuosa), and commercial pulps of Eucalyptus sp. for comparison. The fibrillation of the titica vine culminated in higher energy expenditure on raw materials. The açaí films showed a higher tensile strength (97.2 MPa) compared to the titica films (46.2 MPa), which also showed a higher permeability rate (637.3 g day-1 m-2). Films of all raw materials scored the highest in the grease resistance test (n° 12). The films produced in the study showed potential for use in packaging for light and low moisture products due to their adequate physical, mechanical, and barrier characteristics. New types of pre-treatments or fibrillation methods ecologically correct and viable for reducing energy consumption must be developed, mainly for a greater success of titica vine fibrillation at the nanoscale.

The unbridled use of antimicrobial drugs over the last decades contributed to the global dissemination of drug-resistant pathogens and increasing rates of life-threatening infections for which limited therapeutic options are available. Currently, the search for safe, fast, and effective therapeutic strategies to combat infectious diseases is a worldwide demand. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) rises as a promising therapeutic approach against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. APDT combines light, a photosensitizing drug (PS), and oxygen to kill microorganisms by oxidative stress. Since the APDT field involves branches of biology and physics, the strengthening of interdisciplinary collaborations under the aegis of biophysics is welcome. Given this scenario, Brazil is one of the global leaders in the production of APDT science. In this review, we provide detailed reports of APDT studies published by the Laboratory of Optical Therapy (IPEN-CNEN), Group of Biomedical Nanotechnology (UFPE), and collaborators over the last 10 years. We present an integrated perspective of APDT from basic research to clinical practice and highlight its promising use, encouraging its adoption as an effective and safe technology to tackle important pathogens. We cover the use of methylene blue (MB) or Zn(II) porphyrins as PSs to kill bacteria, fungi, parasites, and pathogenic algae in laboratory assays. We describe the impact of MB-APDT in Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine to treat different infectious diseases. We also point out future directions combining APDT and nanotechnology. We hope this review motivates further APDT studies providing intuitive, vivid, and insightful information for the readers.

Diverse drugs have been used for the management of inflammation disorders and pain. However, they present many side effects and stimulate the search for new pharmacotherapeutic alternatives. Plant-derived products such as copaiba essential oil (CO) offer beneficial pharmacological effects. On the other hand, essential oil's low water solubility and physical instability hinder its in vivo application. Thus, poly-ɛ-caprolactone (PCL)-based nanocarriers have been used to increase their stability and efficacy. This work aimed to encapsulate CO in PCL nanocapsules and evaluate their effect on inflammation models and pain. The polymeric nanocapsules loading CO (CO-NC) were prepared by nanoprecipitation technique, characterized, and analyzed for their anti-inflammatory effect in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that CO-NC presented a spherical shape, 229.3 ± 1.5 nm diameter, and a negative zeta potential (approximately -23 mV). CO and CO-NC presented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by LPS-activated macrophages (J774 cells). In addition, CO-NC significantly reduced TNF-α secretion (3-fold) compared to CO. In vivo, pre-treatment with CO or CO-NC (50, 100, 200 mg/kg, intraperitoneal; i.p) reduced the mechanical allodynia, paw edema, and pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by intraplantar (i.pl) injection of carrageenan in mice. Specifically, CO-NC (200 mg/kg; i.p.) reduced the production of TNF-α similar to the control group. Our results support using polymeric nanocapsules for CO delivery in inflammatory conditions.

Xeroderma pigmentosum variant (XP-V) is an autosomal recessive disease with an increased risk of developing cutaneous neoplasms in sunlight-exposed regions. These cells are deficient in the translesion synthesis (TLS) DNA polymerase eta, responsible for bypassing different types of DNA lesions. From the exome sequencing of 11 skin tumors of a genetic XP-V patients' cluster, classical mutational signatures related to sunlight exposure, such as C>T transitions targeted to pyrimidine dimers, were identified. However, basal cell carcinomas also showed distinct C>A mutation spectra reflecting a mutational signature possibly related to sunlight-induced oxidative stress. Moreover, four samples carry different mutational signatures, with C>A mutations associated with tobacco chewing or smoking usage. Thus, XP-V patients should be warned of the risk of these habits. Surprisingly, higher levels of retrotransposon somatic insertions were also detected when the tumors were compared with non-XP skin tumors, revealing other possible causes for XP-V tumors and novel functions for the TLS polymerase eta in suppressing retrotransposition. Finally, the expected high mutation burden found in most of these tumors renders these XP patients good candidates for checkpoint blockade immunotherapy.

Proper assessment of fluid responsiveness using accurate predictors is crucial to guide fluid therapy and avoid the serious adverse effects of fluid overload. The main objective of this study was to investigate the accuracy of respiratory variations in inferior vena cava diameter (∆IVC) to predict fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated children. This prospective single-center study included 32 children (median age and weight of 17 months and 10 kg, respectively) who received a fluid infusion of 10 ml kg-1 of crystalloid solutions over 10 min. ∆IVC and respiratory variation in aortic blood flow peak velocity (∆Vpeak) were determined over one controlled respiratory cycle before and after fluid loading. Thirteen (41%) participants were fluid-responders. ∆IVC, ∆Vpeak, stroke volume index, and cardiac index were found to be predictors of fluid responsiveness. However, the area under the ROC curve of ∆IVC was smaller when compared to ∆Vpeak (0.709 vs. 0.935, p < 0.012). The best cut-off values were 7.7% for ∆IVC (sensitivity, 69.2%; specificity 78.9%, positive predictive value, 69.2%; and negative predictive value, 78.9%) and 18.2% for ∆Vpeak (sensitivity, 84.6%; specificity, 89.5%; positive predictive value, 84.6%; negative predictive value, 89.5%). Changes in stroke volume were positively correlated with ∆IVC (ρ = 0.566, p < 0.001) and ∆Vpeak (ρ = 0.603, p < 0.001). A significant correlation was also found between changes in MAP and ∆Vpeak (ρ = 0.382; p = 0.031), but the same was not observed with ∆IVC (ρ = 0.011; p = 0.951). In conclusion, ∆IVC was found to have a moderate accuracy in predicting fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated children and is an inferior predictor when compared to ∆Vpeak.

This study investigated the effects of high-intensity resistance training on estimates of the motor neuron persistent inward current (PIC) in older adults. Seventeen participants (68.5 ± 2.8 yr) completed a 2-wk nonexercise control period followed by 6 wk of resistance training. Surface electromyographic signals were collected with two 32-channel electrodes placed over soleus to investigate motor unit discharge rates. Paired motor unit analysis was used to calculate delta frequency (ΔF) as an estimate of PIC amplitudes during 1) triangular-shaped contractions to 20% of maximum torque capacity and 2) trapezoidal- and triangular-shaped contractions to 20% and 40% of maximum torque capacity, respectively, to understand their ability to modulate PICs as contraction intensity increases. Maximal strength and functional capacity tests were also assessed. For the 20% triangular-shaped contractions, ΔF [0.58-0.87 peaks per second (pps); P ≤ 0.015] and peak discharge rates (0.78-0.99 pps; P ≤ 0.005) increased after training, indicating increased PIC amplitude. PIC modulation also improved after training. During the control period, mean ΔF differences between 20% trapezoidal-shaped and 40% triangular-shaped contractions were 0.09-0.18 pps (P = 0.448 and 0.109, respectively), which increased to 0.44 pps (P < 0.001) after training. Also, changes in ΔF showed moderate to very large correlations (r = 0.39-0.82) with changes in peak discharge rates and broad measures of motor function. Our findings indicate that increased motor neuron excitability is a potential mechanism underpinning training-induced improvements in motor neuron discharge rate, strength, and motor function in older adults. This increased excitability is likely mediated by enhanced PIC amplitudes, which are larger at higher contraction intensities.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Resistance training elicited important alterations in soleus intrinsic motor neuronal excitability, likely mediated by enhanced persistent inward current (PIC) amplitude, in older adults. Estimates of PICs increased after the training period, accompanied by an enhanced ability to increase PIC amplitudes at higher contraction intensities. Our data also suggest that changes in PIC contribution to self-sustained discharging may contribute to increases in motor neuron discharge rates, maximal strength, and functional capacity in older adults after resistance training.

Infections have emerged as a novel target in managing skin and mucosa diseases. Bacterial resistance to antimicrobials and biofilm elimination from surfaces remains a challenge. Because polymeric nanocapsules (NC) can increase antimicrobial activity, this study aimed to produce and characterize NC into chitosan films (CSF). Copaiba essential oil (CO) presents antimicrobial activity and was chosen to load NC. In addition, the antibacterial activity was evaluated to obtain a new biodegradable polymeric platform system with the potential to treat topical diseases associated with bacterial infections. The CO-NC produced by nanoprecipitation presented particle size lower than 250 nm, negative charge, and encapsulation efficiency higher than 70 %. Direct incorporation of CO into CSF (CO-CSF) by casting method worsened the film's characteristics. However, incorporating CO-NC into CSF (CO-NC-CSF) avoided these drawbacks demonstrating improved physical, mechanical, morphological, and topographical properties. FTIR results demonstrated possible intermolecular interactions among the polymers and CO. The CO-NC-CSF and CO-CSF presented antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, especially the formulation containing 1 % of CO. These results indicated that CO-NC-CSF is a promising candidate for treating skin disorders.

RESUMO O débito cardíaco é um determinante importante do fornecimento de oxigênio, embora a sua mensuração seja realizada de forma pouco confiável no exame clínico e no monitoramento de rotina. Infelizmente, o monitoramento do débito cardíaco raramente é realizado na medicina intensiva pediátrica, com disponibilidade limitada de métodos precisos para crianças. Relatamos aqui dois casos pediátricos nos quais utilizouse o monitoramento não invasivo do débito cardíaco por meio da análise do tempo de trânsito de ondas de pulso (esCCO, Nihon Kohden, Tóquio, Japão). O sistema esCCO calcula o débito cardíaco continuamente pela correlação negativa entre o volume sistólico e o tempo de trânsito de ondas de pulso e requer apenas o monitoramento por eletrocardiograma, pressão arterial não invasiva e sinais de oximetria de pulso. Antes de iniciar seu uso, o esCCO deve ser calibrado, o que pode ser feito com informações do paciente (sexo, idade, altura e peso corporal) ou informando os valores do débito cardíaco obtidos mediante outros métodos. Em ambos os casos, quando as calibragens foram realizadas com informações do paciente, a concordância entre o débito cardíaco contínuo estimado e as medidas ecocardiográficas foi insatisfatória. Entretanto, após a calibragem com ecocardiografia transtorácica, os valores do débito cardíaco obtidos pelos dois métodos permaneceram semelhantes após 2 horas e 18 horas. Os resultados indicam que o sistema esCCO pode ser útil em crianças; entretanto, são necessários mais estudos para otimizar seu algoritmo e determinar sua exatidão, precisão e tendência em crianças.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is proposed as a valuable method for hemodynamic monitoring and several ultrasound-based predictors of fluid responsiveness have been studied. The main objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of these predictors in children. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant publications through July 2022. Pediatric studies reporting accuracy estimates of ultrasonographic predictors of fluid responsiveness were included since they had used a standard definition of fluid responsiveness and had performed an adequate fluid challenge. RESULTS: Twenty-three studies involving 1028 fluid boluses were included, and 12 predictors were identified. A positive response to fluid infusion was observed in 59.7% of cases. The vast majority of participants were mechanically ventilated (93.4%). The respiratory variation in aortic blood flow peak velocity (∆Vpeak) was the most studied predictor, followed by the respiratory variation in inferior vena cava diameter (∆IVC). The pooled sensitivity and specificity of ∆Vpeak were 0.84 (95% CI, 0.76-0.90) and 0.82 (95% CI, 0.75-0.87), respectively, and the area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUSROC) was 0.89 (95% CI, 0.86-0.92). The ∆IVC presented a pooled sensitivity and specificity of 0.79 (95% CI, 0.62-0.90) and 0.70 (95% CI, 0.51-0.84), respectively, and an AUSROC of 0.81 (95% CI, 0.78-0.85). Significant heterogeneity in accuracy estimates across studies was observed. CONCLUSIONS: POCUS has the potential to accurately predict fluid responsiveness in children. However, only ∆Vpeak was found to be a reliable predictor. There is a lack of evidence supporting the use of POCUS to guide fluid therapy in spontaneously breathing children.

BACKGROUND: Renal resistive index (RRI) and renal pulsatility index (RPI) are Doppler-based variables proposed to assess renal perfusion at the bedside in critically ill patients. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of such variables to predict acute kidney injury (AKI) in mechanically ventilated children. METHODS: Consecutive children aged <14 years underwent kidney Doppler ultrasound examination within 24 h of invasive mechanical ventilation. Renal resistive index (RRI) and renal pulsatility index (RPI) were measured. The primary outcome was severe AKI (KDIGO stage 2 or 3) on day 3. RESULTS: On day 3, 22 patients were classified as having AKI, of which 12 were severe. RRI could effectively predict severe AKI (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.94) as well as RPI (AUC = 0.86). The optimal cut-off for RRI was 0.85 (sensitivity, 91.7%; specificity, 84.7%; PPV, 50.0%; and NPV, 98.4%). Similar results were obtained when the accuracy to predict AKI on day 5 was assessed. Significant correlations were observed between RRI and estimated glomerular filtration rate at enrollment (ρ = -0.495) and on day 3 (ρ = -0.467). CONCLUSIONS: Renal Doppler ultrasound may be a promising tool to predict AKI in critically ill children under invasive mechanical ventilation. IMPACT: Early recognition of acute kidney injury (AKI) is essential to promptly initiate supportive care aimed at restoring renal perfusion, which may prevent or attenuate acute tubular necrosis. Renal arterial Doppler-based parameters are rapid, noninvasive, and repeatable variables that may be promising for the prediction of AKI in children. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the use of renal Doppler-based variables to predict AKI in critically ill children. The present study found that Doppler-based variables could accurately predict the occurrence of severe AKI and were correlated with urinary output and diuretic use.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the temporal trend of accidents involving venomous animals in Brazil from 2007 to 2019. METHODS: this was a cross-sectional study carried out with data from the Notifiable Health Conditions Information System (SINAN). Prais-Winsten linear regression was used for the temporal analysis. We calculated incidence rates according to sex and age group, relative risk and case fatality ratio. RESULTS: during the study period there were 2,102,657 cases of accidents involving venomous animals. With the exception of snakebite, the remaining accidents showed a rising temporal trend in most regions of the country. Scorpion stings, snake bites and spider bites were responsible for 86% of accidents, mainly affecting male people of working age. Accidents involving snakes (0.4%) and bees (0.3%) had the highest case fatality ratios. Children were the main victims of accidents involving bees, caterpillars and "others". CONCLUSION: accidents involving venomous animals showed a rising temporal trend for most conditions, as well as different epidemiological profiles.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate prevalence of unprotected sexual activity and associated factors in the Brazilian population. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with 61,523 adults aged 18 years or older who took part in the 2019 National Health Survey. We estimated prevalence of unprotected sexual activity in the last year. We analyzed association of socioeconomic and demographic variables with the outcome using Poisson regression, estimating prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS: Prevalence of unprotected sexual activity was 76.9% (95%CI 76.3;77.6), being higher in all the country's regions in comparison to the Northern region, as well as being higher among people living in rural areas (PR = 1.04; 95%CI 1.03;1.06), females (PR = 1.06; 95%CI 1.05;1.08), participants aged 60 years or older (PR = 1.33; 95%CI 1.27;1.38), married individuals (PR = 1.25; 95%CI 1.23;1.27) and those with less education (PR = 1.05; 95%CI 1.03;1.06). CONCLUSION: Strategies aimed at groups with higher prevalence of unprotected sexual activity are necessary.

Prostate Cancer (PCa) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men worldwide. The treatment of advanced cases is based on chemotherapy, which lacks specificity and efficacy, due to severe side effects and resistance to the traditional drugs. Copper complexes have shown antitumoral efficacy and low toxicity, being considered a promising class of metal-based drugs for the treatment of malignant neoplasms. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the cellular effects of a copper(II) complex with 4-fluorophenoxyacetic acid hydrazide and 1,10-phenanthroline (1) on PCa cell lines, as well as the mutagenic/recombinogenic and anticarcinogenic potential of 1 in Drosophila melanogaster. PNT-2 (non-tumorigenic), LNCaP (hormone-responsive PCa) and PC-3 (androgen-independent PCa) cells were cultured, and cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT assay. The expression levels of the proliferation markers Ki-67 and Cyclin D1 were analyzed by flow cytometry. Furthermore, the Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test (SMART) and the Epithelial Tumor Test (ETT) were performed. Complex 1 was selective to LNCaP cells, significantly reducing Ki-67 and Cyclin D1 expression levels. Sub-toxic concentrations of complex 1 were defined by the toxicity test in D. melanogaster, and no mutagenic/recombinogenic/carcinogenic effects were observed. Anticarcinogenic potential was observed in D. melanogaster, suggesting modulating activity of the complex 1 against Doxorubicin, a drug used as control by its carcinogenic properties. Therefore, complex 1 is a possible starting point for the development of new antitumor agents for the treatment of PCa.

BACKGROUND: The use of checklists in the pediatric intensive care unit can help improve the quality of care and patient safety. OBJECTIVES: To build and validate a checklist for use in interprofessional rounds in a pediatric intensive care unit. METHODS: This methodological study was conducted in a 20-bed pediatric intensive care unit serving children up to 14 years old. A checklist prototype was constructed through review of the literature and achievement of consensus among the professionals providing care in the unit. Content validation was performed using a modified Delphi technique involving specialists with more than 5 years of experience in pediatric intensive care, methodological studies, and patient safety. Content validity ratios were calculated for the elements of the checklist, which were considered valid when they reached values greater than 0.78. The checklist was tested for usability, application time, and effects on patient care, and feedback was obtained from potential users. RESULTS: Before content validation, the checklist contained 11 domains, 32 items, and 6 daily goals. The invitation to validate content was sent to 86 specialists, and content validity was achieved after 2 rounds of evaluation, with the checklist elements having content validity ratios ranging from 0.94 to 0.97. The mean application time of the checklist was 5 minutes. The final version consisted of 11 domains, 33 items, and 8 daily goals. CONCLUSIONS: This study resulted in a useful and valid instrument for application in interprofessional rounds that was tailored to the needs of local health care professionals.

ZnO nanocrystals with three different morphologies have been synthesized via a simple sol-gel-based method using Brosimum parinarioides (bitter Amapá) and Parahancornia amapa (sweet Amapá) latex as chelating agents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron diffraction patterns (SAED) patterns showed the ZnO nanocrystals were a pure hexagonal wurtzite phase of ZnO. XRD-based spherical harmonics predictions and HRTEM images depicted that the nanocrystallites constitute pitanga-like (~15.8 nm), teetotum-like (~16.8 nm), and cambuci-like (~22.2 nm) shapes for the samples synthesized using bitter Amapá, sweet Amapá, and bitter/sweet Amapá chelating agent, respectively. The band gap luminescence was observed at ~2.67-2.79 eV along with several structural defect-related, blue emissions at 468-474 nm (VO, VZn, Zni), green emissions positioned at 513.89-515.89 (h-VO+), and orange emission at 600.78 nm (VO+-VO++). The best MB dye removal efficiency (85%) was mainly ascribed to the unique shape and oxygen vacancy defects found in the teetotum-like ZnO nanocrystals. Thus, the bitter Amapá and sweet Amapá latex are effective chelating agents for synthesizing distinctive-shaped ZnO nanocrystals with highly defective and remarkable photocatalytic activity.
