RESUMO
Three cases of brain tumours are reported in patients with clinical symptoms much too scant in relation to the extent of the lesion. MRI examinations were decisive for correct diagnosis and for tumour localization. Early brain tumour diagnosis by MR imaging may influence favourably prognosis in such cases.

The authors, basing on 48 patients with different paranasal sinus disease have made a comparison of evaluation of this disease with the use of both conventional sinus radiograph and plain computed tomography (films of 5 cross--section of frontal surface). The results obtained, have been finally verified during surgery treatment. The comparison of radiation doses--to which patients had been exposed, also has been made.

A case of symmetric "calcifications" in the white matter of cerebral hemispheres, basal ganglia and cerebellum is reported in a patient without parathyroid function changes and calcium-phosphorus metabolism disturbances (Fahr syndrome). Attention is called to differences in the extensiveness of these deposits in CT and MRI examinations. The cause of false magnification of the outline of calcifications in CT images is discussed.

CT is very important diagnostic investigation before endoscopic nasal or paranasal sinuses surgery. It is basic procedure to establish indications and to make plan of the operation. The technic should take into consideration the clinical stage of the patients. The paper presents methodology of nasal and paranasal sinuses CT and describes the radiological anatomy of these regions.

The basic clinical signs of calcifications of the basal ganglia and cerebellar dentate nuclei are discussed with separation of various forms of that disease. Particular attention was given to the factors which might predispose to the development of the so called idiopathic calcifications (Fahr syndrome), and secondary calcifications in various forms of parathyroid hypofunction.

Using the method digital analysis of CT image (ASOT programme) the cerebrospinal brain index was analysed in a group of 78 patients after past craniocerebral trauma. The studied subjects had had craniocerebral trauma complicated with focal brain contusions and intracerebral and paracerebral haematomas, as well as posttraumatic multiple changes. The control group comprised 12 subjects who had had cerebral concussion. A significant statistically increase of the index was found in the groups with past craniocerebral trauma complicated with intracerebral haematoma or multiple posttraumatic lesions.

Seventy-eight patients after craniocerebral trauma complicated with brain contusion, intracerebral or paracerebral haematoma, and multiple posttraumatic changes were subjected to control examinations for establishing the frequency of focal signs in neurological examination, in EEG and in psychological tests. The agreement was analysed also between the results of these examinations and those of control CT tomography 12-14 months after trauma. Not infrequently considerable divergences were noted between the obtained results of these examinations, particularly in patients after brain contusion.

Subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy was diagnosed in a 56-year-old female normotensive patient with gradually progressing dementia, pseudobulbar palsy and motor deficits. CT scan showed white matter low attenuation in the frontal and parietal lobes. Neuropathological examination revealed degeneration of the white matter. Amyloid was found in walls of small cortical vessels. The walls of small vessels in the white matter showed severe thickening, fibrosis and hyalinization but not amyloid. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy may be responsible for subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy.

The purpose of the paper was to present comparative laminar anatomy of human temporal bone on the basis of cross-sections of autopsy specimens and CT scans made in identical thin layers. The investigations were made on 20 temporal bones taken during anatomopathological dissections of cadavers of men and women (aged 40 to 60 a) without visible pathological changes in the skull. The CT examinations were made by means of a Siemens Somatom DR 2 apparatus, using high resolution programme, on 10 patients who had pathological changes in the ear. The obtained scans were compared with temporal bone cross-sections, schemas of regular anatomical relation of 8 layers corresponding to routine CT examinations were worked out.

After an analysis of cases of tumours situated on the peripheral nerves treated in hospital the authors stress the usefulness of computerized tomography in the diagnosis of these tumours. By demonstrating the internal structure of the tumour, its anatomical relationships to the surrounding tissues the investigation provides many important and practical data in the surgery of peripheral nerves.
