RESUMO

Cluster-assembled nanowires provide a unique strategy for the preparation of high-performance nanostructures. However, existing preparations are limited by complex processes and harsh reaction conditions. Here, Ag+ ions were utilized as a novel structure-directing agent to generate the self-assembly of Pt clusters to form ultrafine nanowires with a diameter of less than 5 nm. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) characterizations demonstrated that every Ag+ bridged two [Pt3(CO)3(µ2-CO)3]n2- clusters through coordination and formed a sandwich-like structure of [Pt3(CO)3(µ2-CO)3]nAg[Pt3(CO)3(µ2-CO)3]m3-. As a result, multiple sandwich-like structures of [Pt3(CO)3(µ2-CO)3]nAg[Pt3(CO)3(µ2-CO)3]m3- were established by Ag+ to form Pt nanowire superstructures {[Pt3(CO)6]nAg[Pt3(CO)6]mAg[Pt3(CO)6]x}∞ (abbreviated as Ag-Pt NWS). Our results demonstrate that the Pt nanowire superstructures showed promising cocatalytic performance for photocatalytic H2 production with the involvement of Ag+, which promises a desirable way to develop advanced functional nanomaterials.

In this study, a novel colorimetric screening method for identifying menaquinone-7 (MK-7) producing strains was established using potassium permanganate. To our knowledge, this method represents the first direct screening methodology for the identification of MK-7 producing strains. Utilizing this screening method, a new MK-7 producing strain, Bacillus subtilis GSA-184, was identified from the soil of the Tibetan Plateau. Under the optimized fermentation medium (50 g/L glycerol, 30 g/L yeast extract powder, 100 g/L soybean peptone, 1 g/L KH2PO4, and 1 g/L MnSO4), the production of MK-7 was increased to 25.7 mg/L. Additionally, the maximum production of MK-7 reached 36.46 mg/L after 48 h in a 5-L fermenter. Collective animal behavior occurs in groups and swarms at almost every biological scale, from single-celled organisms to the largest animals on Earth. The intriguing mysteries behind these group behaviors have attracted many scholars, and while it is known that models can reproduce qualitative features of such complex behaviors, this requires data from real animals to demonstrate, and obtaining data on the exact features of these groups is tricky.In this paper, we propose the Hidden Markov Unscented Tracker (HMUT), which combines the state prediction capability of HMM and the high-precision nonlinear processing capability of UKF. This prediction-driven tracking mechanism enables HMUT to quickly adjust tracking strategies when facing sudden changes in target motion direction or rapid changes in speed, reducing the risk of tracking loss. Videos of fruit fly swarm movement in an enclosed environment are captured using stereo cameras. For the captured fruit fly images, the thresholded AKAZE algorithm is first used to detect the positions of individual fruit flies in the images, and the motion of the fruit flies is modeled using a multidimensional hidden Markov model (HMM). Tracking is then performed using the Unscented Kalman Filter algorithm to obtain the flight trajectories of the fruit flies in two camera views. Finally, 3D reconstruction of the trajectories in both views is achieved through polar coordinate constraints, resulting in 3D motion data of the fruit flies. Additionally, the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by simulating fruit fly swarm movement using the Boids algorithm. Finally, based on the tracked fruit fly flight data, behavioral characteristics of the fruit flies are analyzed from two perspectives. The first is a statistical analysis of the differences between the two behaviors. The second dimension involves clustering trajectory similarity using the DTW method based on fruit fly flight trajectories, further analyzing the similarity within clusters and differences between clusters.

PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the impact of repairing the hip joint capsule during posterior-lateral approach total hip arthroplasty (THA) on postoperative hip joint function and late dislocation incidence. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included 413 patients, divided into experimental (hip joint capsule repair, n = 204) and control (hip joint capsule excision, n = 209) groups. Patients were followed for five years, evaluating postoperative hip range of motion (ROM), dislocation rate, VAS and HHS scores, inflammatory and coagulation markers, hospitalization, blood loss, and body composition. Statistical analysis included the Student's t-test, Chi-square test, and logistic regression for dislocation risk factors. RESULTS: Joint capsule repair improved postoperative hip flexion and extension within six months and at two years postoperatively, internal and external rotation within three months, and abduction and adduction throughout the entire follow-up period (P < 0.05). Capsular repair also reduced early and late dislocation rates (P < 0.05). Significant differences in HHS and VAS scores, inflammatory and coagulation indicators, hospitalization, blood loss, and body composition were noted (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression indicated hip joint repair, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, and sarcopenia as dislocation risk factors (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Capsular repair during posterior-lateral THA improves postoperative hip function and mobility while reducing dislocation rates, blood loss, pain, inflammation, and economic burden. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, or sarcopenia require individualized planning and enhanced postoperative care to minimize complications.

Xanthoma typically occurs in the subcutaneous tissues, with rare cases of xanthoma in the joints. However, the case of knee joint osteonecrosis combined with xanthoma is even more uncommon. In this article, we described a 50-year-old female patient who suffered xanthoma in the knee joint on the basis of osteonecrosis of the knee joint. The primary clinical symptoms were knee joint pain and limited mobility. The patient initially received conventional treatment for osteonecrosis. However, there was no significant improvement. Later, we found a synovial xanthoma in the patient's knee. Finally, she underwent arthroscopic excision of the knee joint synovial xanthoma. Following the procedure, her VAS score decreased from 7 to 2, and knee joint mobility increased from 10-103° to 10-140°. Through our follow-up, the patient did not exhibit symptom recurrence. This case is valuable as it provides a feasible therapeutic approach for future clinical applications.

Our previous study shows that activation of pregnane X receptor (PXR) exerts hepatoprotection against lithocholic acid (LCA)-induced cholestatic liver injury. In this study we investigated whether PXR activation could inhibit hepatocyte pyroptosis, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Male mice were treated with mouse PXR agonist pregnenolone 16α-carbonitrile (PCN, 50 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.p.) for 7 days, and received LCA (125 mg/kg, i.p., bid) from D4, then sacrificed 12 h after the last LCA injection. We showed that LCA injection resulted in severe cholestatic liver injury characterized by significant increases in gallbladder size, hepatocellular necrosis, and neutrophil infiltration with a mortality rate of 68%; PCN treatment significantly inhibited hepatocyte pyroptosis during LCA-induced cholestatic liver injury, as evidenced by reduced serum lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, TUNEL-positive cells and hepatocyte membrane damage. Furthermore, PXR activation suppressed both the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome-induced canonical pyroptosis and the apoptosis protease activating factor-1 (APAF-1) pyroptosome-induced non-canonical pyroptosis. Inhibition of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and forkhead box O1 (FOXO1) signaling pathways was also observed following PXR activation. Notably, dual luciferase reporter assay showed that PXR activation inhibited the transcriptional effects of NF-κB on NLRP3, as well as FOXO1 on APAF-1. Our results demonstrate that PXR activation protects against cholestatic liver injury by inhibiting the canonical pyroptosis through the NF-κB-NLRP3 axis and the non-canonical pyroptosis through the FOXO1-APAF-1 axis, providing new evidence for PXR as a prospective anti-cholestatic target.

Background: Sarcopenia is a progressive, systemic skeletal muscle disorder. Resistance exercise and physical activity have been proven effective in its treatment, but consensus on pharmacological interventions has not yet been reached in clinical practice. ß-Hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a nutritional supplement that has demonstrated favorable effects on muscle protein turnover, potentially contributing to beneficial impacts on sarcopenia. Aim: To assess the potential positive effects of HMB or HMB-containing supplements on individuals with sarcopenia, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the treatment of sarcopenia with HMB. Two assessors independently conducted screening, data extraction, and bias risk assessment. Outcome data were synthesized through a random-effects model in meta-analysis, using the mean difference (MD) as the effect measure. Results: A meta-analysis was conducted on six studies. HMB or HMB-rich nutritional supplements showed a statistically significant difference in Hand Grip Strength (HGS) for sarcopenia patients [MD = 1.26, 95%CI (0.41, 2.21), p = 0.004], while there was no statistically significant difference in Gait Speed (GS) [MD = 0.04, 95%CI (-0.01, 0.08), p = 0.09], Fat Mass (FM) [MD = -0.18, 95%CI (-0.38, 0.01), p = 0.07], Fat-Free Mass (FFM) [MD = 0.09, 95%CI (-0.23, 0.42), p = 0.58], and Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI) [MD = 0.01, 95%CI (-0.00, 0.01), p = 0.13]. Conclusion: HMB or HMB-rich nutritional supplements are beneficial for muscle strength in sarcopenia patients. However, there is limited evidence demonstrating significant effects on both muscle strength and physical performance in sarcopenia individuals. HMB may be considered as a treatment option for sarcopenia patients. Systematic review registration: CRD42024512119.

The Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum is a serious fungal disease that can dramatically impact wheat production. At present, control is mainly achieved by the use of chemical fungicides. Hexaconazole (IUPAC name: 2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)hexan-2-ol) is a widely used triazole fungicide, but the sensitivity of F. graminearum to this compound has yet to be established. The current study found that the EC50 values of 83 field isolates of F. graminearum ranged between 0.06 and 4.33 µg/mL, with an average EC50 of 0.78 µg/mL. Assessment of four hexaconazole-resistant laboratory mutants of F. graminearum revealed that their mycelial growth, and pathogenicity were reduced compared to their parental isolates, and that asexual reproduction was reduced by resistance to hexaconazole. Meanwhile, the mutants appeared to be more sensitive to abiotic stress associated with SDS, and H2O2, while their tolerance of high concentration of Congo red, and Na+ and K+ increased. Molecular analysis revealed numerous point mutations in the FgCYP51 target genes that resulted in amino acid substitutions, including L92P and N123S in FgCYP51A, as well as M331V, F62L, Q252R, A412V, and V488A in FgCYP51B, and S28L, S256A, V307A, D287G and R515I in FgCYP51C, three of which (S28L, S256A, and V307A) were conserved in all of the resistant mutants. Furthermore, the expression of the FgCYP51 genes in resistant strains was found to be significantly (p < 0.05) reduced compared to their sensitive parental isolates. Positive cross-resistance was found between hexaconazole and metconazole and flutriafol, as well as with the diarylamine fungicide fluazinam, but not with propiconazole, and the phenylpyrrole fungicide fludioxonil, or with tebuconazole, which actually exhibited negative cross-resistance. These results provide valuable insight into resistant mechanisms to triazole fungicides in F. graminearum, as well as the appropriate selection of fungicide combinations for the control of FHB to ensure optimal wheat production.

OBJECTIVE: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) effectively treats end-stage hemophilic hip arthropathy. Given hemophilia's unique characteristics, perioperative bleeding remains a significant risk for patients undergoing THA. Tranexamic acid (TXA), an efficient antifibrinolytic agent, may benefit the outcomes of THA for patients with hemophilia (PWH). This study aims to explore the clinical efficacy of intra-articular injection of TXA in treating perioperative bleeding in PWH and assess its additional clinical benefits. METHODS: The retrospective study comprised data of PWH who received THA from January 2015 to December 2021 in the research center. A total of 59 individuals were included in the study, divided into a TXA group (n = 31) and a non-TXA group (n = 28). We compared various parameters, including total blood loss (TBL), visible blood loss (VBL), occult blood loss (OBL), intraoperative coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) consumption, perioperative total FVIII consumption, hemoglobin (HB), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), length of hospital stay, hospitalization costs, length of surgery, total protein, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), D-dimer, rate of joint swelling, hip joint range of motion (ROM), visual analogue scale (VAS), and Harris hip joint function scale (HHS) between the two groups. Follow-up assessments were conducted for up to 24 months. A Student's t test was utilized for the statistical analysis. RESULTS: This study demonstrated that intra-articular TXA effectively reduced TBL (1248.19 ± 439.88 mL, p < 0.001), VBL (490.32 ± 344.34 mL, p = 0.003), and OBL (757.87 ± 381.48 mL, p = 0.004) in PWH who underwent THA. TXA demonstrated effectiveness in reducing VAS scores on POD1, POD7, and POD14 and joint swelling rates on POD1, POD7, POD14, and at discharge (p < 0.05). Additionally, the TXA group achieved higher HHS ratings at all follow-up time points (p < 0.05), showing superior hip joint mobility, lower postoperative inflammation levels, reduced factor VIII consumption during surgery, and less postoperative nutritional loss. No statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of hospital stay, hospitalization costs, surgery duration, and coagulation indicators. CONCLUSION: Intra-articular injection of TXA reduces perioperative bleeding in PWH undergoing THA while also improving joint mobility, post-operative rehabilitation, and quality of life. This may provide value for the future application of TXA in PWH.

Selective activation of C-H bonds in light alkanes under mild conditions is challenging but holds the promise of efficient upgrading of abundant hydrocarbons. In this work, we report the conversion of propane to propylene with ∼95% selectivity on Cu(I)-ZSM-5 with O2 at room temperature and pressure. The intraporous Cu(I) species was oxidized to Cu(II) during the reaction but could be regenerated with H2 at 220 °C. Diffuse reflectance ultraviolet spectroscopy indicated the presence of both Cu+-O2 and Cu2(µ-O2)2+ species in the zeolite pores during the reaction, and electron paramagnetic resonance results showed that propane activation occurred via a radical-mediated pathway distinct from that with H2O2 as the oxidant. Correlation between spectroscopic and reactivity results on Cu(I)-ZSM-5 with different Cu loadings suggests that the isolated intraporous Cu(I) species is the main active species in propane activation.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to evaluate the effect of beta-blockers (BB) on the response of heart rate (HR) to 6-min walk test (6MWT) in atrial fibrillation (AF) and whether the AF patients treated with BB have a similar HR response to 6MWT as the AF and sinus rhythm (SR) patients without BB treatment at the same resting HR level. METHODS: The before-after study involving 74 AF patients was to evaluate the effect of BB treatment (pre-BB and with BB). The comparison study included 74 BB-treated AF patients (with BB), 74 matched AF patients without BB (no BB), and 74 SR patients. The percentage increase amplitude of HR (HR-PIA) in 6MWT was calculated: [(the exercise HR - the resting HR)/(the resting HR)] × 100%. RESULTS: The before-after study showed that BB treatment decreased the resting and mean exercise HR (98.6 ± 15.2 vs. 85.5 ± 11.2 bpm and 121.3 ± 17.3 vs. 109.0 ± 16.7 bpm) during 6MWT. The comparison study demonstrated that against the SR, the AF with BB and no BB groups have higher mean exercise HR-PIA (28.2 ± 17.1% and 22.0 ± 9.6%, vs. 6.9 ± 3.7%) when their resting HR is similar. Moreover, the mean exercise HR-PIA was also significantly higher in the with BB group than in the no BB group. CONCLUSION: In AF patients with relatively higher resting HR, BB treatment could decrease the resting and exercise HR during 6MWT. However, BB treatment could not effectively attenuate the exercise HR rise as compared with AF without BB treatment, even with similar resting HR levels.

BACKGROUND: Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an important microorganism in ethanol synthesis, and with sugarcane molasses as the feedstock, ethanol is being synthesized sustainably to meet growing demands. However, high-concentration ethanol fermentation based on high-concentration sugarcane molasses-which is needed for reduced energy consumption of ethanol distillation at industrial scale-is yet to be achieved. RESULTS: In the present study, to identify the main limiting factors of this process, adaptive laboratory evolution and high-throughput screening (Py-Fe3+) based on ARTP (atmospheric and room-temperature plasma) mutagenesis were applied. We identified high osmotic pressure, high temperature, high alcohol levels, and high concentrations of K+, Ca2+, K+ and Ca2+ (K+&Ca2+), and sugarcane molasses as the main limiting factors. The robust S. cerevisiae strains of NGT-F1, NGW-F1, NGC-F1, NGK+, NGCa2+ NGK+&Ca2+-F1, and NGTM-F1 exhibited high tolerance to the respective limiting factor and exhibited increased yield. Subsequently, ethanol synthesis, cell morphology, comparative genomics, and gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis were performed in a molasses broth containing 250 g/L total fermentable sugars (TFS). Additionally, S. cerevisiae NGTM-F1 was used with 250 g/L (TFS) sugarcane molasses to synthesize ethanol in a 5-L fermenter, giving a yield of 111.65 g/L, the conversion of sugar to alcohol reached 95.53%. It is the highest level of physical mutagenesis yield at present. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that K+ and Ca2+ ions primarily limited the efficient production of ethanol. Then, subsequent comparative transcriptomic GO and pathway analyses showed that the co-presence of K+ and Ca2+ exerted the most prominent limitation on efficient ethanol production. The results of this study might prove useful by promoting the development and utilization of green fuel bio-manufactured from molasses.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), a new body index, and sarcopenia, while also assessing the potential of WWI as a tool for screening sarcopenic patients. The cross-sectional study involved adults who possessed complete data on WWI and appendicular skeletal muscle mass from the 1999-2006 and 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Weighted multivariate regression and logistic regression analyses were employed to explore the independent relationship between WWI and sarcopenia. The study included 26,782 participants. The results showed that WWI demonstrated a positive correlation with sarcopenia risk. In the fully adjusted model, with each 1 unit increase in WWI, the risk of developing sarcopenia rose 14.55 times higher among males (OR: 14.55, 95% CI 12.33, 17.15) and 2.86 times higher among females (OR: 2.86, 95% CI 2.59, 3.15). The optimal cutoff values of WWI for sarcopenia were 11.26 cm/√kg for males and 11.39 cm/√kg for females. Individuals with a higher WWI have an increased risk of developing sarcopenia, and a high WWI functions as a risk factor for sarcopenia. Assessing WWI could assist in identifying individuals at risk of sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Computer-aided tongue and face diagnosis technology can make Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) more standardized, objective and quantified. However, many tongue images collected by the instrument may not meet the standard in clinical applications, which affects the subsequent quantitative analysis. The common tongue diagnosis instrument cannot determine whether the patient has fully extended the tongue or collected the face. OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes an image quality control algorithm based on deep learning to verify the eligibility of TCM tongue diagnosis images. METHODS: We firstly gathered enough images and categorized them into five states. Secondly, we preprocessed the training images. Thirdly, we built a ResNet34 model and trained it by the transfer learning method. Finally, we input the test images into the trained model and automatically filter out unqualified images and point out the reasons. RESULTS: Experimental results show that the model's quality control accuracy rate of the test dataset is as high as 97.06%. Our methods have the strong discriminative power of the learned representation. Compared with previous studies, it can guarantee subsequent tongue image processing. CONCLUSIONS: Our methods can guarantee the subsequent quantitative analysis of tongue shape, tongue state, tongue spirit, and facial complexion.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of massage for postoperative rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). DATA SOURCES: The PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were systematically searched from inception to May 2024. STUDY SELECTION: Any randomized controlled trials on the use of massage for postoperative TKA rehabilitation were included. DATA EXTRACTION: A meta-analysis of outcomes, including postoperative pain, knee range of motion (ROM), postoperative D-dimer levels, and length of hospital stay, was performed. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool was used to assess the risk of bias, and the data for each included study were extracted independently by two researchers. DATA SYNTHESIS: Eleven randomized controlled clinical trials with 940 subjects were included. The results showed that compared with the control group, the massage group experienced more significant pain relief on the 7th, 14th and 21st days after the operation. Moreover, the improvement in knee ROM was more pronounced on postoperative days 7 and 14. In addition, the massage group reported fewer adverse events. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the reduction in postoperative D-dimer levels between the patients and controls. Subgroup analysis revealed that massage shortened the length of hospital stay for postoperative patients in China but not significantly for patients in other regions. Nevertheless, the heterogeneity of the studies was large. CONCLUSIONS: Increased massage treatment was more effective at alleviating pain and improving knee ROM in early post-TKA patients. However, massage did not perform better in reducing D-dimer levels in patients after TKA. Based on the current evidence, massage can be used as an adjunctive treatment for rehabilitation after TKA.

BACKGROUND: Esculentin-1, initially discovered in the skin secretions of pool frogs (Pelophylax lessonae), has demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity; however, its immunomodulatory properties have received little attention. RESULTS: In the present study, esculentin-1 cDNA was identified by analysing the skin transcriptome of the dark-spotted frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus). Esculentin-1 from this species (esculentin-1PN) encompasses a signal peptide, an acidic spacer peptide, and a mature peptide. Sequence alignments with other amphibian esculentins-1 demonstrated conservation of the peptide, and phylogenetic tree analysis revealed its closest genetic affinity to esculentin-1P, derived from the Fukien gold-striped pond frog (Pelophylax fukienensis). Esculentin-1PN transcripts were observed in various tissues, with the skin exhibiting the highest mRNA levels. Synthetic esculentin-1PN demonstrated antibacterial activity against various pathogens, and esculentin-1PN exhibited bactericidal activity by disrupting cell membrane integrity and hydrolyzing genomic DNA. Esculentin-1PN did not stimulate chemotaxis in RAW264.7, a murine leukemic monocyte/macrophage cell line. However, it amplified the respiratory burst and augmented the pro-inflammatory cytokine gene (TNF-α and IL-1ß) expression in RAW264.7 cells. CONCLUSIONS: This novel finding highlights the immunomodulatory activity of esculentin-1PN on immune cells.

Background: No standardized criteria for surgical resection of parasagittal sinus meningiomas (PSM) have been established, and different surgical strategies have been proposed. The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of a "radical" surgical strategy in the treatment of PSM. Methods: The clinical histories, radiological findings, pathologic features, and surgical records of 53 patients with PSM admitted by the same surgical team using the "radical" surgical strategy were retrospectively analyzed between 2018 and 2023. Results: Among the 53 PSM cases, 16 (30.2%) had a patent sinus proper, 28 (52.8%) had partial obstruction of the sinus proper, and 9 (17.0%) had complete obstruction of the sinus proper before the operation. During operation, Simpson grade I resection was performed in 34 (64.2%) cases and Simpson grade II in 19 (35.8%) cases. Postoperative pathologic examination suggested tumors of WHO grade I in 47 (88.7%) cases, WHO grade II in 4 (7.5%) cases, and WHO grade III in 2 (3.8%) cases. Postoperative complications primarily included a small amount of delayed intracerebral hemorrhage in 3 (5.7%) cases, exacerbation of cerebral edema in 3 (5.7%) cases, exacerbation of motor and sensory deficits in 4 (7.5%) cases, and intracranial infection in 2 (3.8%) cases. There were no cases of death or new-onset neurological dysfunction. Dizziness and headache symptoms improved to varying degrees, and a seizure-free status was achieved postoperatively. Excluding one case lost to follow-up, the average follow-up period was 33 months, and there were no cases of recurrence. Conclusion: A "radical" strategy for the surgical management of PSM is effective, safe, and simple to perform, provided that the sagittal sinus is properly managed and its associated veins are protected.

INTRODUCTION: Following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), there is a significant decline in periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD), potentially resulting in complications such as prosthetic loosening, periprosthetic fracture, and influencing the postoperative recovery. The objective of this study was to summarize the factors influencing periprosthetic BMD in TKA from existing studies. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic search was performed in 4 databases: Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. The last search was carried out on October 12, 2023. We used the keywords ''total knee arthroplasty'', ''bone mineral density'' and each of them combined with ''tibia'' and ''femur'' to identify all relevant articles reporting about potential impact factors influencing the periprosthetic BMD in patients after TKA. RESULTS: Out of 1391 articles, 22 published from 2001 to 2023 were included in this systematic review. Following eligibility screening, six significant categories affecting periprosthetic BMD were recognized: prosthesis type, design of stem, coating, body weight, cement, and peg distance. CONCLUSION: Mobile-bearing prostheses, modular polyethylene design, short stems, cruciform stems, avoidance of bone cement, higher body mass index, titanium nitride coating, and a smaller medial peg distance could potentially benefit periprosthetic BMD. Comprehensive consideration of diverse factors influencing periprosthetic BMD before surgery and collaboration with post-operative drug therapy are essential. RESUMO

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is widely recognized as a chronic joint disease characterized by degeneration of knee cartilage and subsequent bone hyperplasia. However, it is important to acknowledge the significant role of muscles in the development and progression of KOA. Muscle function (MF) and muscle quality (MQ) are key factors in understanding the involvement of muscles in KOA. Quantitative indices such as muscle mass, muscle strength, muscle cross-sectional area, muscle thickness, and muscle fatigue are crucial in assessing MF and MQ. Despite the growing interest in KOA, there is a scarcity of studies investigating the relationship between muscles and this condition. This review aims to examine the commonly used indices and measurement methods for assessing MF and MQ in clinical settings, while also exploring the association between muscles and KOA. Furthermore, this article highlights the importance of restoring MF and MQ to enhance symptom management and improve the quality of life for patients with KOA.

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) promise low-cost, large-area luminescence applications with air-stabilized electrodes and a versatile fabrication that enables the use of solution processes. Nevertheless, the commercialization of LECs is still encountering many obstacles, such as low electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies of the ionic materials. In this paper, we propose five blue to yellow ionic Ir complexes possessing 4-fluoro-4'-pyrazolyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-carbonitrile (ppfn) as a novel cyclometalating ligand and use them in LECs. In particular, the device within di[4-fluoro-4'-pyrazolyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-carbonitrile]-4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridyl iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate (DTBP) shows a remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 70%, and by adjusting the emissive-layer thickness, the maximal external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaches 22.15% at 532 nm under the thickness of 0.51 µm, showing the state-of-the-art value for the reported blue-green LECs.
