RESUMO

Nanocarriers (NCs) that can precisely deliver active agents, nutrients and genetic materials into plants will make crop agriculture more resilient to climate change and sustainable. As a research field, nano-agriculture is still developing, with significant scientific and societal barriers to overcome. In this Review, we argue that lessons can be learned from mammalian nanomedicine. In particular, it may be possible to enhance efficiency and efficacy by improving our understanding of how NC properties affect their interactions with plant surfaces and biomolecules, and their ability to carry and deliver cargo to specific locations. New tools are required to rapidly assess NC-plant interactions and to explore and verify the range of viable targeting approaches in plants. Elucidating these interactions can lead to the creation of computer-generated in silico models (digital twins) to predict the impact of different NC and plant properties, biological responses, and environmental conditions on the efficiency and efficacy of nanotechnology approaches. Finally, we highlight the need for nano-agriculture researchers and social scientists to converge in order to develop sustainable, safe and socially acceptable NCs.

Developing a desirable ethanol dehydrogenation process necessitates a highly efficient and selective catalyst with low cost. Herein, we show that the "complex active site" consisting of atomically dispersed Au atoms with the neighboring oxygen vacancies (Vo) and undercoordinated cation on oxide supports can be prepared and display unique catalytic properties for ethanol dehydrogenation. The "complex active site" Au-Vo-Zr3+ on Au1/ZrO2 exhibits the highest H2 production rate, with above 37,964 mol H2 per mol Au per hour (385 g H2 g-1 Au h-1) at 350 oC, which is 3.32, 2.94 and 15 times higher than Au1/CeO2, Au1/TiO2, and Au1/Al2O3, respectively. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, we demonstrate the structural sensitivity of these complex sites by assessing their selectivity and activity in ethanol dehydrogenation. Our study sheds new light on the design and development of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for ethanol dehydrogenation. Fundamentally, atomic-level catalyst design by colocalizing catalytically active metal atoms forming a structure-sensitive "complex site", is a crucial way to advance from heterogeneous catalysis to molecular catalysis. Our study advanced the understanding of the structure sensitivity of the active site in atomically dispersed catalysts.

Coupling renewable electricity to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) electrochemically into carbon feedstocks offers a promising pathway to produce chemical fuels sustainably. While there has been success in developing materials and theory for CO2 reduction, the widespread deployment of CO2 electrolyzers has been hindered by challenges in the reactor design and operational stability due to CO2 crossover and (bi)carbonate salt precipitation. Herein, we design asymmetrical bipolar membranes assembled into a zero-gap CO2 electrolyzer fed with pure water, solving both challenges. By investigating and optimizing the anion-exchange-layer thickness, cathode differential pressure, and cell temperature, the forward-bias bipolar membrane CO2 electrolyzer achieves a CO faradic efficiency over 80% with a partial current density over 200 mA cm-2 at less than 3.0 V with negligible CO2 crossover. In addition, this electrolyzer achieves 0.61 and 2.1 mV h-1 decay rates at 150 and 300 mA cm-2 for 200 and 100 h, respectively. Postmortem analysis indicates that the deterioration of catalyst/polymer-electrolyte interfaces resulted from catalyst structural change, and ionomer degradation at reductive potential shows the decay mechanism. All these results point to the future research direction and show a promising pathway to deploy CO2 electrolyzers at scale for industrial applications.

Melasma is a prevalent hyperpigmentation condition known for its challenging treatment due to its resemblance to photoaged skin disorders. Numerous studies have shed light on the intricate nature of melasma, which often bears similarity to photoaging disorders. Various therapeutic approaches, encompassing topical and systemic treatments, chemical peeling, and laser therapy, have exhibited efficacy in managing melasma in previous research. However, melasma often reoccurs despite successful treatment, primarily due to its inherent photoaged properties. Given that melasma shares features with photoaging disorders, including disruptions in the basement membrane, solar elastosis, angiogenesis, and mast cell infiltration in the dermal layer, a comprehensive treatment strategy is imperative. Such an approach might involve addressing epidermal hyperpigmentation while concurrently restoring dermal components. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of conventional treatment methods frequently employed in clinical practice, as well as innovative treatments currently under development for melasma management. Additionally, we offer an extensive overview of the pathogenesis of melasma.

Background: Obesity is a major worldwide health problem and can be related to cellular senescence. Along with the rise in obesity, the comorbidity of renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is increasing. Whether obesity accelerates the severity of IR injury and whether senescence contributes to these conditions remain unclear. We studied the degree of injury and cellular senescence in the IR kidneys and perirenal adipose tissues of high-fat-diet-induced obese mice. Methods: C57BL/6 mice fed standard chow or a high-fat diet for 16 weeks were randomized to renal IR or sham group (n = 6-10 each). Renal IR was performed by unilateral clamping of the right renal pedicle for 30 minutes. Six weeks after surgery, renal function, perirenal fat/renal senescence, and histology were evaluated ex vivo. Results: Obese mice showed more renal tubular damage and fibrosis in IR injury than control mice, even though the degree of ischemic insult was comparable. Renal expression of senescence and its secretory phenotype was upregulated in either IR injury or with a high-fat diet and was further increased in the IR kidneys of obese mice. Fat senescence and the expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha were also increased, especially in the perirenal depot of the IR kidneys, with a high-fat diet. Conclusion: A high-fat diet aggravates IR injury in murine kidneys, which is associated, at least in part, with perirenal fat senescence and inflammation. These observations support the exploration of therapeutic targets of the adipo-renal axis in injured obese kidneys.

Bronchoscopy is a frequently used initial diagnostic procedure for patients with suspected lung cancer (LC). Cytological examinations of bronchial washing (BW) samples obtained during bronchoscopy often yield inconclusive results regarding LC diagnosis. The present study aimed to identify molecular biomarkers as a non-invasive method for LC diagnosis. Aberrant DNA methylation is used as a useful biomarker for LC. Therefore, microarray-based methylation profiling analyses on 13 patient-matched tumor tissues at stages I-III vs. non-tumor tissues were performed, and a group of highly differentially methylated genes was identified. A subsequent analysis using bisulfite-pyrosequencing with additional tissues and cell lines revealed six methylated genes [ADAM metallopeptidase with thrombospondin type 1 motif 20, forkhead box C2 (mesenchyme forkhead 1), NK2 transcription factor related, locus 5 (Drosophila), oligodendrocyte transcription factor 3, protocadherin γ subfamily A 12 (PCDHGA12) and paired related homeobox 1 (PRRX1)] associated with LC. Next, a highly sensitive and accurate detection method, linear target enrichment-quantitative methylation-specific PCR in a single closed tube, was applied for clinical validation using BW samples from patients with LC (n=68) and individuals with benign diseases (n=33). PCDHGA12 and PRRX1 methylation were identified as the best-performing biomarkers to detect LC. The two-marker combination showed a sensitivity of 82.4% and a specificity of 87.9%, with an area under the curve of 0.891. Notably, the sensitivity for small cell LC was 100%. The two-marker combination had a positive predictive value of 93.3% and a negative predictive value of 70.7%. The sensitivity was higher than that of cytology, which only had a sensitivity of 50%. The methylation status of the two-marker combination showed no association with sex, age or stage, but was associated with tumor location and histology. In conclusion, the present study showed that the regulatory regions of PCDHGA12 and PRRX1 are highly methylated in LC and can be used to detect LC in BW specimens as a diagnostic adjunct to cytology in clinical practice.

ß-Lactam is one of the widely used veterinary drugs, but simultaneous analytical methods for ß-lactam on various animal foods have not been established. In this study, we aimed to detect 34 ß-lactam antibiotics simultaneously in livestock samples (beef, pork, chicken, egg, and milk) by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Samples were extracted using phosphate buffer/acetonitrile or water/acetonitrile and then cleaned with 150 mg of C18 and 900 mg of MgSO4. The method showed acceptable recovery and repeatability of 66.1-119% and 1.5-26%, respectively. The method was employed to monitor 127 real samples from the domestic market to confirm its applicability, and no ß-lactam residues were detected. It was also applied to other matrices (eel, flat fish, and shrimp) and showed acceptable recovery (62.1-120%) and repeatability (1.0-28%). The method is expected to improve the efficiency of monitoring veterinary drug residues in domestic livestock products and fishery foods.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal flora and the translocation of its products, such as muramyl dipeptide (MDP), are common causes of sepsis. MDP is a common activator of the intracellular pattern recognition receptor NOD2, and MDP translocation can cause inflammatory damage to the small intestine and systemic inflammatory responses in rats. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of MDP on the intestinal mucosa and distant organs during sepsis and the role of the NOD2/AMPK/LC3 pathway in MDP-induced mitochondrial dysfunction in the intestinal epithelium. METHODS: Fifty male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into five treatment groups: lipopolysaccharide (LPS) only, 1.5 and 15 mg/kg MDP + LPS, and 1.5 and 15 mg/kg MDP + short-peptide enteral nutrition (SPEN) + LPS. The total caloric intake was the same per group. The rats were euthanized 24 hours after establishing the model, and peripheral blood and small intestinal mucosal and lung tissues were collected. RESULTS: Compared to the LPS group, both MDP + LPS groups had aggravated inflammatory damage to the intestinal mucosal and lung tissues, increased IL-6 and MDP production, increased NOD2 expression, decreased AMPK and LC3 expression, increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production, and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential. Compared to the MDP + LPS groups, the MDP + SPEN+LPS groups had decreased IL-6 and MDP production, increased AMPK and LC3 protein expression, and protected mitochondrial and organ functions. CONCLUSIONS: MDP translocation reduced mitochondrial autophagy by regulating the NOD2/AMPK/LC3 pathway, causing mitochondrial dysfunction. SPEN protected against MDP-induced impairment of intestinal epithelial mitochondrial function during sepsis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential of technetium-99m-mercaptoacetyltriglycine (99mTc-MAG-3) renal scintigraphy for predicting maximal detrusor pressure in the early stages of spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTING: Tertiary rehabilitation facility. METHODS: Medical records of individuals with SCI admitted between January 2020 and April 2023 who underwent both 99mTc-MAG-3 renal scintigraphy and urodynamic study within 90 days of SCI onset were retrospectively reviewed. Pearson's coefficient analysis was performed to determine the relationship between 99mTc-MAG-3 renal scintigraphy findings and urodynamic study findings. A multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to determine the best predictors of maximal detrusor pressure. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine risk factors for high detrusor pressure. RESULTS: Ninety-four participants were enrolled in this study. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and ERPF (% predicted) were significantly correlated with maximal detrusor pressure. The multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that ERPF (% predicted) was a significant predictor of maximal detrusor pressure. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that ERPF (% predicted) was significantly associated with high detrusor pressure. The receiver operating characteristic curve demonstrated that the predictive model had an area under the curve of 0.725, with an ERPF (% predicted) cut-off of 64.05%, sensitivity 1.000, and specificity 0.429. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that 99mTc-MAG-3 renal scintigraphy may be useful for predicting high detrusor pressure in early SCI and may guide the timing of urodynamic studies in individuals with early SCI for appropriate management of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the kinematic effects of two widely-used prefabricated ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs), the Dyna Ankle (DA) and UD Flex (UD), on the gait cycle of patients with hemiplegia due to cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study involving 29 patients. Gait analysis results were assessed under three conditions: barefoot, with the DA, and with the UD. Friedman tests and post hoc analysis with Bonferroni correction were performed to assess differences between the three conditions. RESULTS: The DA significantly improved ankle dorsiflexion during the mid-swing phase, making it more effective in correcting foot drop compared with the UD (DA: 2.28°, UD: 0.44°). Conversely, the UD was more effective in preventing knee flexion during the loading response (DA: 28.11°, UD: 26.72°). CONCLUSIONS: The DA improved ankle dorsiflexion during the swing phase significantly more than that with the UD in patients with hemiplegia. Compared with the DA, the UD more effectively prevented increased knee flexion during the loading response. The choice to prescribe these orthoses should consider individual patient characteristics.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most important pathogens causing respiratory tract infection in humans, especially in infants and the elderly. The identification and structural resolution of the potent neutralizing epitopes on RSV fusion (F) protein enable an "epitope-focused" vaccine design. However, the display of RSV F epitope II on the surface of the widely-used human hepatitis B virus core antigen (HBcAg) has failed to induce neutralizing antibody response in mice. Here, we used the hepadnavirus core protein (HcAg) from different mammalian hosts as scaffolds to construct chimeric virus-like particles (VLPs) presenting the RSV F epitope II. Mouse immunization showed that different HcAg-based chimeric VLPs elicited significantly different neutralizing antibody responses, among which the HcAg derived from roundleaf bat (RBHcAg) is the most immunogenic. Furthermore, RBHcAg was used as the scaffold platform to present multiple RSV F epitopes, and the immunogenicity was further improved in comparison to that displaying a single epitope II. The designed RBHcAg-based multiple-epitope-presenting VLP formulated with MF59-like adjuvant elicited a potent and balanced Th1/Th2 immune response, and offered substantial protection in mice against the challenge of live RSV A2 virus. The designed chimeric VLPs may serve as the potential starting point for developing epitope-focused vaccines against RSV. Our study also demonstrated that RBHcAg is an effective VLP carrier for presenting foreign epitopes, providing a promising platform for epitope-focused vaccine design.

The mechanisms underlying chronic inflammatory diseases remain unclear. Therefore, researchers have explored the mechanisms underlying colitis using diverse materials. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in fermented products and bioconversion materials, their potential efficacy is being actively studied. Gochujang, a traditional Korean fermented product, is crafted by blending fermented Meju powder, gochu (Korean chili) powder, glutinous rice, and salt. In our study, we explored the effectiveness of Gochujang (500 mg/kg; Cheongju and Hongcheon, Korea) in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice model. Gochujang was orally administered for 2 weeks, followed by the induction of colitis using 3% DSS in the previous week. During our investigation, Gochujang variants (TCG22-25, Cheongju and TCG22-48, Hongcheon) did not exhibit significant inhibition of weight reduction (p = 0.061) but notably (p = 0.001) suppressed the reduction in large intestine length in DSS-induced colitis mice. In the serum from colitis mice, TCG22-48 demonstrated reduced levels of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 (p = 0.001) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (p = 0.001). Additionally, it inhibited the phosphorylation of Erk (p = 0.028), p38, and NF-κB (p = 0.001) the inflammatory mechanism. In our study, TCG22-25 demonstrated a reduction in the IL-6 level (p = 0.001) in serum and inhibited the phosphorylation of p38 and NF-κB (p = 0.001). Histological analysis revealed a significant (p = 0.001) reduction in the pathological score of the large intestine from TCG22-25 and TCG22-48. In conclusion, the intake of Gochujang demonstrates potent anti-inflammatory effects, mitigating colitis by preventing the large intestine length reduction of animals with colitis, lowering serum levels of TNF-α and IL-6 cytokines, and inhibiting histological disruption and inflammatory mechanism phosphorylation.

The emergence of immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has revolutionized the field of oncology, providing promising results in various malignancies. However, ICIs can sometimes lead to severe injection reactions, requiring alternative treatment options. In this case report, we introduce a case of a severe infusion reaction induced by atezolizumab. After atezolizumab infusion, the patient experienced symptoms that were suggestive of anaphylactic shock, including chest tightness, low blood pressure, and loss of consciousness, all of which were restored by immediate administration of steroid, antihistamine, and epinephrine. When selecting a new ICI, we were concerned about cross-reactivity with atezolizumab. As such, we conducted a skin test to establish the underlying mechanism of the previous reaction to atezolizumab infusion, the results of which were highly suggestive of Ig-E-mediated hypersensitivity. The skin test for pembrolizumab, another ICI, was negative. Therefore, we replaced atezolizumab with pembrolizumab, and the infusion proceeded safely. To date, the patient has undergone 13 cycles of pembrolizumab, and the disease has remained stable. This case demonstrates that patients who exhibit severe injection reactions to ICIs can continue treatment safely, without cross-reactions, with alternative ICIs. This case will help provide patients who have experienced drug-related hypersensitivity reactions with a choice to use alternative ICIs, thus expanding their options for chemotherapy.

Lysosomal-dependent cell death (LDCD) has an excellent therapeutic effect on apoptosis-resistant and drug-resistant tumors; however, the important role of LDCD-related genes (LDCD-RGs) in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) has not been reported. Initially, single-cell atlas of LDCD signal in KIRC was comprehensively depicted. We also emphasized the molecular characteristics of LDCD-RGs in various human neoplasms. Predicated upon the expressive quotients of LDCD-RGs, we stratified KIRC patients into tripartite cohorts denoted as C1, C2, and C3. Those allocated to the ambit of C1 evinced the most sanguine prognosis within the KIRC cohort, underscored by the acme of LDCD-RGs scores. This further confirms the significant role that LDCD-RGs play in both the pathophysiological foundation and clinical implications of KIRC. In culmination, by virtue of employing the LASSO-Cox analytical modality, we have ushered in an innovative and avant-garde prognostic framework tailored for KIRC, predicated on the bedrock of LDCD-RGs. The assemblage of KIRC instances was arbitrarily apportioned into constituents inclusive of a didactic cohort, an internally wielded validation cadre, and an externally administered validation cohort. Concurrently, patients were dichotomized into strata connoting elevated jeopardy synonymous with adverse prognostic trajectories, and conversely, diminished risk tantamount to favorable prognoses, contingent on the calibrated expressions of LDCD-RGs. Background: Ultraviolet B (UVB) from sunlight represents a major environmental factor that causes toxic effects resulting in structural and functional cutaneous abnormalities in most living organisms. Although numerous studies have indicated the biological mechanisms linking UVB exposure and cutaneous manifestations, they have typically originated from a single study performed under limited conditions. Methods: We accessed all publicly accessible expression data of various skin cell types exposed to UVB, including skin biopsies, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts. We performed biological network analysis to identify the molecular mechanisms and identify genetic biomarkers. Results: We interpreted the inflammatory response and carcinogenesis as major UVB-induced signaling alternations and identified three candidate biomarkers (IL1B, CCL2, and LIF). Moreover, we confirmed that these three biomarkers contribute to the survival probability of patients with cutaneous melanoma, the most aggressive and lethal form of skin cancer. Conclusion: Our findings will aid the understanding of UVB-induced cutaneous toxicity and the accompanying molecular mechanisms. In addition, the three candidate biomarkers that change molecular signals due to UVB exposure of skin might be related to the survival rate of patients with cutaneous melanoma.

The prevalence and age of onset of hearing loss differ according to sex. This study aimed to identify associated factors for age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and determine whether there are differences between males and females regarding associated factors for ARHL. This cross-sectional study used data from adults who underwent medical examinations including hearing tests from 2011 to 2021. A total of 2,349 individuals were included. The study conducted sex-specific analyses using both univariate and multiple regression. Univariate analysis employed logistic regression, while multiple regression involved variable selection through the augmented backward elimination method. Separate multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted for each sex. In the univariate analysis, among males, age, underweight, alcohol consumption, weight, and height exhibited statistical significance. Among females, age, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, sarcopenia, weight, height, age at menarche, and duration of hormone exposure were found to be significant factors. However, in the multiple logistic regression model for males, underweight, and smoking emerged as significant, while in females, age, weight, obesity, and age at menarche retained their significance. We found that there are different associated factors for ARHL in each sex. Assessment and counseling for smoking, obstetric history, underweight, and obesity may be beneficial in managing patients with ARHL.

Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer globally and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Existing treatment strategies for gastric cancer often present numerous side effects. Consequently, recent studies have shifted toward devising new treatments grounded in safer natural substances. α-Pinene, a natural terpene found in the essential oils of various plants, such as Lavender angustifolia and Satureja myrtifolia, displays antioxidant, antibiotic, and anticancer properties. Yet, its impact on gastric cancer remains unexplored. This research assessed the effects of α-pinene in vitro using a human gastric adenocarcinoma cell-line (AGS) human gastric cancer cells and in vivo via a xenograft mouse model. The survival rate of AGS cells treated with α-pinene was notably lower than that of the control group, as revealed by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5 diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. This decline in cell viability was linked to apoptosis, as verified by 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole and annexin V/propidium iodide staining. The α-pinene-treated group exhibited elevated cleaved-poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase and B cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)-associated X (Bax) levels and reduced Bcl-2 levels compared with the control levels. Moreover, α-pinene triggered the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and p38 within the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. In the xenograft mouse model, α-pinene induced apoptosis through the MAPK pathway, devoid of toxicity. These findings position α-pinene as a promising natural therapeutic for gastric cancer.

Background: Intrathecal baclofen (ITB) therapy, a viable alternative for unsuitable candidates of conventional spasticity medications, is a preferred method of administration over the oral route. Owing to its enhanced bioavailability, ITB ensures a more effective delivery at the target site. Objective: There is a lack of conclusive evidence regarding the use of ITB treatment in managing ambulatory patients with spastic dystonia. Before ITB pump implantation, patients commonly undergo an ITB bolus injection trial to rule out potential adverse reactions and verify the therapeutic effects on hypertonic issues. In this report, we highlight a case of spastic dystonia, particularly focusing on an ambulatory patient who demonstrated significant improvement in both the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) score and gait pattern following the ITB injection trial. Case report: This case report outlines the medical history of a 67-year-old male diagnosed with left-side hemiplegia and spastic dystonia, resulting from his second episode of intracranial hemorrhage in the right thalamus. An ITB injection trial was initiated because the patient was not suitable for continued botulinum toxin injections and oral medications. This was due to the persistent occurrence of spastic dystonia in both the upper and lower extremities. The patient underwent a four-day ITB injection trial with progressively increasing doses, resulting in improved MAS scores and gait parameters, including cadence, step length, step time, stride length, and stride time were increased. Particularly, kinematic gait analysis demonstrates a substantial improvement of increased knee flexion in the swing phase in stiff knee gait pattern. These findings indicated a gradual reduction in spasticity-related symptoms, signifying the positive effect of the ITB injection trial. The patient eventually received an ITB pump implantation. Conclusion: In this post-stroke patient with spastic dystonia, ITB therapy has demonstrated effective and substantial management of spasticity, along with improvement in gait patterns.

Odd-electron bonds, i.e., the two-center, three-electron (2c/3e), or one-electron (2c/1e) bonds, have attracted tremendous interest owing to their novel bonding nature and radical properties. Herein, complex [K(THF)6][LSn:···Sn:L] (1), featuring the first and unsupported 2c/1e Sn···Sn σ-bond with a long distance (3.2155(9) Å), was synthesized by reduction of stannylene [LSn:] (L = N,N-dpp-o-phenylene diamide) with KC8. The one-electron Sn-Sn bond in 1 was confirmed by the crystal structure, DFT calculations, EPR spectroscopy, and reactivity studies. This compound can be viewed as a stabilized radical by delocalizing to two metal centers and can readily mediate radical reactions such as C-C coupling of benzaldehyde.

Developing atomically synergistic bifunctional catalysts relies on the creation of colocalized active atoms to facilitate distinct elementary steps in catalytic cycles. Herein, we show that the atomically-synergistic binuclear-site catalyst (ABC) consisting of [Formula: see text]-O-Cr6+ on zeolite SSZ-13 displays unique catalytic properties for iso-stoichiometric co-conversion of ethane and CO2. Ethylene selectivity and utilization of converted CO2 can reach 100 % and 99.0% under 500 °C at ethane conversion of 9.6%, respectively. In-situ/ex-situ spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations reveal atomic synergies between acidic Zn and redox Cr sites. [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) sites facilitate ß-C-H bond cleavage in ethane and the formation of Zn-Hδ- hydride, thereby the enhanced basicity promotes CO2 adsorption/activation and prevents ethane C-C bond scission. The redox Cr site accelerates CO2 dissociation by replenishing lattice oxygen and facilitates H2O formation/desorption. This study presents the advantages of the ABC concept, paving the way for the rational design of novel advanced catalysts.
