Las parasitosis intestinales son padecimientos causados por helmintos y protozoarios. En su mayoría, transmitidos por vía fecal - oral, especialmente por ingestión de aguas y alimentos contaminados con formas infectantes; llegando a ser una de las causas de morbilidad más importantes en la población; es por ello que es necesario caracterizarlas epidemiológicamente en las comunidades y así conocer su prevalencia, identificar factores de riesgo para adquirir la infección y evaluar el conocimiento de la población sobre el tema. Se realizó un estudio coproparasitológico a 324 habitantes de la comunidad 18 de Mayo, sin distinción de sexo ni edad, durante los meses febrero y marzo de 2012, las muestras fueron recolectadas y analizadas con microscopia óptica por las técnicas convencionales (Solución Salina y Lugol, Kato, Faust y Baermann). Los análisis estadísticos fueron realizados con el programa estadístico SPSS y se obtuvo una prevalencia general de parasitados de 55,6%; siendo los protozoarios 95% más prevalentes que los helmintos 11,7%. Los factores de riesgo estudiados para adquirir la infección fueron el tipo de agua de consumo (hervida, filtrada, de botellón y directa del chorro), demostrando tener significancia estadística las últimas dos, al igual que no lavarse las manos antes de comer los alimentos. El porcentaje de respuestas correctas de conocimiento sobre parasitosis intestinales, es menor de 29% en todos los ítems investigados.


Intestinal parasitism is caused by helminths and protozoa. It is mostly transmitted by the fecal - oral intake, especially by ingestion of contaminated food and water with infectious forms, and it is becoming one of the leading causes of morbidity in the population. Therefore, it is crucial to epidemiologically characterize communities to determine their prevalence to identify risk factors for acquiring infection and to evaluate the knowledge of the population on the subject. This study was conducted on 324 fecal samples from community residents of 18 de Mayo, between the months of February and March 2012. Samples were taken and analyzed by light microscopy using conventional techniques (saline and iodine, Kato, Faust and Baermann). Calculations were performed with SPSS and an overall prevalence of 55.6% parasitism was obtained with protozoa comprising 95% and helminths 11.7% of the parasitism. The greatest risk factor for acquiring the infection studied was type of drinking water (boiled, filtered, bottle direct from the jet), and the last two showed statistical significance, like not washing hands before eating and preparing food. The percentage of correct knowledge about intestinal parasites is less than 29% of all the items investigated.

La transmisión de parásitos intestinales a través del agua representa un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial. Considerando la importancia del agua como uno de los recursos renovables más importantes para el hombre por su utilidad, abundancia y amplia distribución en la naturaleza, la contaminación de ésta con excretas humanas y animales, favorecen la transmisión de infecciones parasitarias. A fin de determinar la presencia de protozoarios intestinales en el agua para consumo humano del pozo profundo en la comunidad 18 de Mayo, municipio Francisco Linares Alcántara y en 10 casas seleccionadas de la misma comunidad, se tomaron muestras de 20 litros en cada punto, por duplicado, y se aplicó la técnica de concentración por floculación, para posteriormente realizar observación directa utilizando solución salina y lugol; y se empleó el método de Kinyoun. Adicionalmente, al agua del pozo se le realizó el análisis fisicoquímico. Se observó presencia de protozoarios patógenos y comensales en 90% de las muestras provenientes de las viviendas. En las muestras del pozo profundo se evidenciaron quistes de Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba coli y Endolimax nana; no se observó la presencia de coccidios ni microsporidias intestinales. La desinfección del agua del pozo que surte esta comunidad es de suma importancia, además de recomendar a las comunidades el tratamiento del agua de consumo.


The transmission of intestinal parasites through water represents one of the world’s most prominent public health problems. Water is one of the most important renewable resources for the man, for its usefulness, abundance and wide distribution in the nature, but human and animal excretion contamination in potable water favors the transmission of parasitic infections. In order to determinate the presence of intestinal protozoans in drinking water from the deep-wells and in 10 selected houses in the 18 de Mayo community of Francisco Linares Alcantara municipality, Aragua State, two 20 liter water samples were taken and processed through the concentration by flocculation technique for direct observation using physiological saline solution and lugol, and the Kinyoun coloration technique. Additionally, physicochemical analysis was conducted on the well water. Pathogenic and commensal protozoans were observed in 90% of the analyzed samples. Cysts of Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba coli and Endolimax nana were found in the deep-well sample but not intestinal coccidia and microsporidia. The disinfection of the well water that supplies this community is really important, and it is recommended that the community’s drinking water be routinely treated.

Con el objetivo de determinar el porcentaje de población susceptible frente a la fiebre amarilla se realizó estudio de campo,observacional, descriptivo, seleccionando muestra aleatoria y estratificada de 500 sujetos por procedimiento para Monitoreo Rápido de Cobertura (MRC), distribuidos por parroquias y sectores con bajas coberturas administrativas de vacunación. La cobertura real del municipio obtenida por MRC fue de 89%, mientras que la administrativa era 114%; estimándose en general, 11% de susceptibles para fiebre amarilla, siendo este porcentaje mayor en niños menores de 1 año (75%) y de un año (44%) de edad. En conclusión, las coberturas vacunales reales son menores a lo establecido en Programa Ampliado de Inmunizaciones (mínimo de 95%), por lo que se recomienda reforzar el trabajo para aumentar la cobertura vacunal.


In order to determine population susceptibility against yellow fever, an observational, and descriptive study was conducted, selecting a stratified random sample of 500 subjects per procedure for Rapid Coverage Monitoring (RCM), distributed by administrative areas with low vaccination coverage. The real coverage of municipality was 89%, while administrative coverage was 114% in general, with estimated 11% of people susceptible to yellow fever, being even higher in children aged one year (44%). In conclusion, real vaccination coverage is less than the provisions of the Expanded Program on Immunization (minimum of 95%), so it is recommended that immunization coverage be increased and reinforced.

INTRODUCTION: Chagas disease has been a public health problem in Latin America for many years. In Venezuela the disease is mainly distributed in the rural populations and endemic areas with an overall seroprevalence index of 8,3% for the year 2000. OBJECTIVE: The infection seroprevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi was determined in the human population younger than 16 years. An the entomological index was obtained and the grade of knowledge of the Chagas disease was surveyed in the local inhabitants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional field study was performed in two rural communities of the municipality Costa de Oro, State Aragua, Venezuela. Here, T. cruzi-seropositive testing was conducted in subjects younger than 16 years. The samples were processed using indirect hemagglutination and by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). A questionnaire was administered to assess household risk factors, and knowledge about vectors and disease held by the local population. Searches for triatomines were conducted inside of dwellings. RESULTS: Seroprevalence in children less than 16 years old was 1.02%. Sixteen specimens of triatominae adults were captured. The vector species recognized were Panstrongylus geniculatus, Rhodnius pictipes, and Eratyrus mucronatus. The index of triatomid infestation with respect to site and house was respectively, 100% and 10.9%. No association was found between the seropositives and the other variables. Of the interviewed individuals, 95% knew that insects transmit diseases, but less than 46% knew that triatominds transmit Chagas disease or were aware of the disease pathology. CONCLUSION: The discovery of secondary vectors in the area outlines the necessity to carry out epidemiological and entomological studies that associate environmental variables with the habitat of these insects. This will allow the identification of risk factors responsible for the transmission of Chagas disease in this region.

Introducción. La enfermedad de Chagas es un problema de salud pública en América Latina. En Venezuela, la prevalencia en zonas marginales de poblaciones rurales y de áreas endémicas para el año 2000 fue de 8,3 por ciento. Objetivo. Determinar la seroprevalencia de infección por Trypanosoma cruzi en la población menor de 16 años, los indicadores entomológicos y el grado de conocimiento de la enfermedad de Chagas en los habitantes. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un trabajo de campo descriptivo de corte transversal en dos comunidades rurales del municipio Costa de Oro, estado Aragua, Venezuela. Se determinó la presencia de anticuerpos para T. cruzi en toda la población menor de 16 años mediante las pruebas de hemoaglutinación indirecta y ELISA. Se realizó una encuesta epidemiológica al jefe de familia para la búsqueda de factores de riesgo asociados a la enfermedad. Resultados. La seroprevalencia en niños menores de 16 años fue de 1,02 por ciento. Se recolectaron 16 triatominos de tres especies diferentes: Panstrongylus geniculatus, Rhodnius pictipes y Eratyrus mucronatus. No se encontraron triatominos positivos para T. cruzi. El índice de infestación en el lugar y las casas fue de 100 por ciento y 10,9 por ciento, respectivamente; no se encontró asociación entre la serología positiva para T. cruzi y las variables estudiadas. El 95 por ciento de los encuestados conocen el insecto transmisor de la enfermedad, pero menos del 46 por ciento saben qué es la enfermedad, cómo se transmite y los daños que produce. Conclusión. El hallazgo de vectores secundarios en la zona plantea la necesidad de realizar estudios epidemiológicos y entomológicos que incorporen nuevas variables afines con el hábitat de estos triatominos, de manera que permitan la identificación de los factores de riesgos implicados en la transmisión de esta enfermedad en la zona.

This study attempted to quantify the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in children less than 15 years of age in Barinas State, Venezuela and investigate risk factors for infection. Among 3,296 children, 4 (0.12%) were seropositive. The mother of one child also was also seropositive, which suggested that congenital transmission is a possible risk factor for Chagas disease in this area. Seroprevalence among the dwellers of 10 localities was 3.3%. Rhodnius prolixus was detected in 7 localities and in 8% of 125 dwellings. A multivariate logistic regression model showed that infection was associated with age, a dirt floor, and distance from houses to palm trees. The risk of infection is increased by the presence of adventitious sylvatic R. prolixus and transient or residual colonies. Insecticide spraying does not seem justified in this scenario, a finding that was also observed in other Latin American countries. New methods are therefore needed for Chagas disease control programs.

La estratificación de riesgo para priorizar las acciones de control en función de optimización de recursos, es de gran importancia dentro de las actividades de vigilancia epidemiológica para el control de la Enfermedad de Chagas. Para esto es necesario contar con un método para la detección de la infestación intradomiciliaria por triatominos vectores, que sea de alta sensibilidad, especialmente encondiciones de baja densidad. En este estudio se compararon los resultados obtenidos con 5 métodos de capturas de vectores, 2 de búsqueda pasiva: caja Gómez-Nuñez y papel A4 Bond colocados en el dormitorio principal de las casas, 2 de búsqueda activa por personal técnico especializado: captura directa y captura con un excitante (cypermetrina+tetrametrina) durante ½ hora y por último la recolección efectuada durante un mes por los habitantes, oportunamente entrenados. El estudio se realizó en 11 localidades y 200 casas del Estado Portuguesa y 29 localidades y 350 casas del Estado Barinas. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los resultados obtenidos con los diferentes métodos en los dos estados. Sobre el total de las 550 casas exploradas, 132 fueron positivas: en 131 (99,2%) la presencia de triatominos fue detectada por lo habitantes vs. 5,3% por búsqueda activa; 3,38 por la caja Gómez-Nuñez; 3,03% por búsqueda con excitante y 0 por ciento por la hoja de papel. Se colectaron en total 5 especies y 563 individuos. Rhodnius prolixus fue la especie predominante seguido por Triatoma maculata, Panstrongylus geniculatus y R. pictipes.

OBJECTIVE: To relate entomological, epidemiological and geographical data to understand the transmission dynamics of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in a closed focus in western Venezuela. METHODS: Spatial and temporal patterns of Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis, the most prevalent phlebotomine sand fly species (99.7%), were studied in El Brasilar, Curarigua, Lara State, Venezuela, a small rural community of 20 dwellings and 118 inhabitants. The sand fly population was monitored using Centers for Disease Control light traps monthly throughout 1 year in the domestic and sylvatic habitats and for 3 months in all inhabited houses. RESULTS: Temporal variation followed the yearly bimodal pattern of precipitation with the highest population densities in April and December. Infection with flagellates suggestive of Leishmania spp. was detected in 0.01% of 10,026 dissected females of L. pseudolongipalpis, which proved to be highly endophilic. Prevalence of Leishmania infection in people, as measured by the leishmanin skin test, was correlated with distance of the houses from the woodland and with sand fly abundance. A logistic regression model showed that for people who live in the village, the proximity to the woodland (linear) should be considered a risk factor for Leishmania infection (binary) (z = -2.02, P = 0.04, OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.97-0.99). This was consistent with the association between the proportion of VL infection and the log of sand fly abundance, which was negatively correlated with distance from the woodland. CONCLUSION: We discuss strategies that might be useful in controlling VL transmission in this endemic focus.

A prospective study was conducted in El Brazilar, Curarigua, Lara State, Venezuela, a small rural focus of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) to investigate the burden and the evolution of Leishmania infection in the human and canine population. The incidence of the disease from February 1998 to February 2002 was recorded and two cross-sectional surveys using the leishmanin skin test (LST) and immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) were carried out. The dipstick test with recombinant r-K39 antigen was also applied in 2002. The incidence of the disease per year among the population (n=118) during the period of study was 0.004. The rate of new infections per year was 0.07 [95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.15-1.09]. The overall prevalence of infection measured by LST was not significantly higher in 2002 (43.2%) than in 1998 (28.3%), but it was with IFAT [16.3%vs. 4.6%; odds ratio (OR): 4.01; 95% CI: 1.03-22.78; P=0.022] which would indicate an increasing transmission. The dipstick test only detected infection in children up to 10 years (19.4%). Prevalence in dogs was not significantly different in 2002 (57%) vs. 1998 (33%). The parasite was isolated from dogs and identified by a polymerase chain reaction based on telomeric sequences as Leishmania chagasi/infantum.

Conocimientos, aptitudes y prácticas (CAP) hacia las enfermedades por parte de la población a riesgo, son variables importantes a investigar en los estudios previos a la aplicación de las medidas de control y la vigilancia epidemiológica. Dentro del marco de un estudio de seroprevalencia a Tripanosoma cruzi en dos estados de Venezuela con diferente historia de Programa de Control de la enfermedad de Chagas (PCECh), se obtuvo información sobre el conocimiento que tienen las personas sobre el vector y la enfermedad. Se encuestaron 1.236 jefes de familia en el Estado Barinas y 1.015 en el Estado Portuguesa. En el primer estado, el 48,7 por ciento vivía en ranchos adecuados para la colonización y el establecimiento del vector y el 51,3 por ciento en casas , mientras que en Portuguesa el 22,4 por ciento vivía en ranchos y el 77,6 por ciento en casas respectivamente. En el Estado Barinas, donde las actividades del PCECh se han llevado a cabo esporádicamente sólo en la última década, las personas conocen porque han visto más el vector dentro y alrededor de las viviendas, sin embargo no lo relacionan con, ni conocen la enfermedad. En cambio, en Portuguesa, donde el PCECh se ha llevado a cabo desde su inicio, a principio de los '60, las personas conocen menos al chipo probablemente porque haya sido más controlado, pero saben más sobre la enfermedad y han conocido más personas que la han padecido. Sin embargo, en ambos estados una gran proporción de las personas no contestó las preguntas. Esto indica la necesidad de implementar un sistema adecuado de Educación para el conocimiento y el desarrollo de aptitudes y prácticas en la población para la prevención y control de la enfermedad y evaluar su impacto en la vigilancia epidemiológica a través de la participación comunitaria, menos costosa y más sostenible

Mixed infestation of nymphs and adults of Rhodnius prolixus Stal, 1859 and Panstrongylus geniculatus Latreille, 1811 was detected in 3 (15%) of 20 dwellings in El Guamito, an endemic focus of Chagas disease in Lara State, Venezuela. In one of the houses, both species were positive for Trypanosoma cruzi: 14.3% (R. prolixus) and 20% (P. geniculatus ). The overall infection rate in 143 of 352 R. prolixus was 16.1%. Parasites isolated from R. prolixus were identified as T. cruzi I by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis. Dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays of 36 R. prolixus showed that 58.3% of the R. prolixus had fed on humans. The gut contents of one fifth-instar nymph of P. geniculatus that was positive for T. cruzi also reacted with anti-human serum. A questionnaire was used to gather data on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the population. An indirect immunofluorescent test, an indirect hemaglutination test, and an ELISA were used to detect the presence of antibodies against T. cruzi in 84 of 86 inhabitants and in 15.5% of people more than 20 years old. The relative risk (RR) of infection was greater in men than in women (RR = 1.61, 95% confidence interval = 0.54-4.80). Of the people more than 15 years old, 36.6% had no formal education. All respondents recognized triatomine bugs, but they did not relate them to Chagas disease transmission. A total of 85.7% of the houses were "ranchos" suitable for the colonization of triatomine bugs. The possible domiciliation of P. geniculatus and the implications of competition with R. prolixus for resources are discussed. Since there is no clear separation of food sources, abiotic factors such as microclimatic variation within houses may be critical to predict the outcome of the process of competition and potential domestication of this generally sylvatic species.
