RESUMO

This article presents the synthesis of a novel hybrid sol-gel coating and its functionalization with various waste material additives. The unmodified and modified hybrid coatings were deposited on mild steel (MS) substrates, and their anticorrosion performance in a 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride corrosive environment was assessed using potentiodynamic polarization and impedance electrochemical techniques. The Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) spectral, thermal, surface-roughness, scratch-resistance, and contact-angle characterizations were also conducted on the fabricated coatings. Electrochemical techniques proved that the coating sample loaded with the limestone additive showed the best anticorrosion behavior in the saline environment after 4 weeks of exposure. Moreover, the obtained morphological analysis data indicated better surface integrity and cross-link density for this sample compared to other waste-modified coatings. Conversely, the tire rubber and activated carbon additives showed a severe negative impact on the thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of the parent coating, which can be attributed to the high porosity and less integrated natures of these modified coating formulations proved by their morphological images. Still, all loaded waste additives to the hybrid coating have enhanced its adhesion to the steel surface, as indicated by scratch resistance testing. Overall, the results of the present study show the need for maintaining a balance between the economic value of the modification methodology of hybrid coatings and the type of the loaded waste material additive.

RESUMO

The solution annealing of cold rolled super austenitic stainless steel UN08029 alloy was carried out to investigate the role of solutionizing duration and temperature on the electrochemical corrosion and pitting resistance of the alloy. Linear polarization, cyclic potentiodynamic, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques were used to evaluate the electrochemical behavior in 3.5% NaCl solution. The microstructural analysis of the solutionized samples revealed the formation of uniform equiaxed grains from elongated columnar grains, which size increases with duration and temperature. The charge transfer resistance shows an increasing corrosion protectiveness of 46 to 60% with increasing solutionizing duration from 30 to 120 min. Similarly, a 45, 52, 60, and 26% improvement in the corrosion performance was obtained for sample solutionized at 1000, 1100, 1200, and 1300 °C, respectively. In general, the solutionized samples demonstrated improved resistance over the as-received alloy, and this behavior increases with solutionizing duration and temperature. Though the pitting potential drops below that of the as-received alloy, the hysteresis loop revealed that the solutionized samples are less prone to pitting damage, and the sample solutionized at 1200 °C for 120 min exhibited optimum pitting corrosion resistance. The microstructural influence on corrosion was also discussed.

RESUMO

In this work, friction stir processing using a pinless tool with a featured shoulder was performed to alter the surface properties of Al 6061-O, focusing on the effect of tool traverse speed on surface properties, i.e., microstructure, hardness, and corrosion resistance. All processed samples showed refinement in grain size, microhardness, and corrosion resistance compared to the base material. Increasing tool-traverse speed marginally refined the microstructure, but produced a significant reduction in microhardness. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization resistance, and potentiodynamic polarization were used to evaluate the effect of the processing conditions on corrosion behavior in a saline environment. All corrosion test results are found to agree and were supported with pictures of corroded samples captured using a field emission scanning electron microscope. A remarkable reduction in the corrosion rate was obtained with increasing traverse speed. At the highest traverse speed, the corrosion current density dropped by approximately 600 times when compared with that of the base alloy according to potentiodynamic polarization results. This is mainly due to the grain refinement produced by the friction stir process.

RESUMO

This work describes the first report of the known glycosidic constituents ß-sitosterol-3-O-ß-d-glucoside-6'-palmitate (1), ß-sitosterol-3-O-ß-d-glucoside (2), momor-cerebroside I (3), phytolacca cerebroside (4), 1,2-di-O-palmitoyl-3-O-(6-sulfoquinovopyranosyl)-glycerol (5), isorhamnetin-3-robinobioside (6), and isorhamnetin-3-rutinoside (7) from the plant Salsola imbricata Forssk. grown in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated from extensive 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and chemical analyses. Compound 1 is reported for the first time from the Amaranthaceae family. In addition to the isolated and identified fatty alcohols, compounds 3, 4, 5, and 6 are also reported for the first time from the genus Salsola. The findings of this study suggest a contribution of the isolated compounds to the various biological activities reported for this plant.

RESUMO

In this study, a novel hybrid sol-gel coating on AA3003 substrate was developed and the effects of various waste material additives on the reinforcement of the sol-gel coating and the anticorrosion properties in the saline medium were investigated. Egg shell, crumb rubber, activated carbon obtained for pyrolysis of waste rubber tire, waste rubber tire, cement kiln dust, and ST100 additives were tested as reinforcement materials. The AFM characterization results of the coating formulations on AA3003 alloy revealed enhanced roughness values for the modified coatings as compared to the base coating. Similarly, no significant changes were detected in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) absorption peaks of the hybrid polymeric material upon loading it with the waste additives, while slight changes in the hydrophobic properties of the final modified coatings were observed as a result of the modification process. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the hybrid sol-gel coating had a promising potential for the protection of the AA3003 substrate against corrosion in the saline medium. However, the loaded additives negatively affected the corrosion resistance properties of the parent hybrid sol-gel coating. For instance, the egg shell additive had the least negative effect on the barrier properties, whereas the cured coating layer of the sample loaded with cement and clay additives showed some disintegration, inhomogeneity, and low barrier properties on the metal surface.

RESUMO

A series of UV-protected coatings were prepared using cerium-oxide-functionalized oil fly ash (f-OFA-CeO2) in waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) dispersions. Three monomers, namely, poly(tetramethyleneoxide glycol) (PTMG), polydimethylsiloxane-hydroxy terminated (PDMS) and 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (H12MDI), were used to pre-mix with f-OFA-CeO2 separately, followed by the synthesis of WBPU/f-OFA-CeO2 dispersions. The f-OFA-CeO2 distribution and enrichment into any part (top/bottom/bulk) of the coating was strongly affected by the pre-mixing of f-OFA-CeO2. The f-OFA-CeO2 was densely distributed in the top, bottom and bulk when the f-OFA-CeO2 was pre-mixed with PDMS, H12MDI and PTMG, respectively. Only an f-OFA-CeO2-enriched top surface showed excellent UV protection. The lowest UV-degraded exposed coating was found when the top surface of the coating was f-OFA-CeO2-enriched.

RESUMO

The phytochemical analysis of the butanolic extract from the leaves of date palm of Saudi origin resulted in the isolation of three major constituents, oleanolic acid (1), vanillyl alcohol (2), and ß-sitosterol-3-O-ß-d-glucoside (3), which had not been isolated from this plant or previously reported. Together, compounds 1 and 2 account for 1.0% of the butanol extract, which represents 0.4% of the mass of the dried leaves. The isolation of other known compounds for this plant such as fatty acids, lutein, and sucrose was also achieved in this study. The characterization and identification of the isolated compounds were conducted on the basis of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses. The findings of the current study will definitely increase the knowledge about the contribution of the constituents of this plant to its well-known nutrition, corrosion inhibition, and antimicrobial properties.

RESUMO

Date palm leaves (DPL) was extracted using acetone (ACE), ethanol (ETH), aqueous (AE), butanol (BUT), methanol (METH), isopropanol (ISO), and ethyl acetate (EHY ACT). The extracts were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The various solvent DPL extracts were screened for anticorrosion property against low carbon steel in 15 wt.% HCl solution at 25 °C. ACE, AE, and ETH DPL extracts are found to promote the corrosion of the low carbon steel while BUT, ISO, METH, and EHY ACT DPL extracts exhibit anticorrosion property. However, BUT DPL extract shows the best anticorrosion property with 400 ppm protecting the low carbon steel by 82%. Based on the results from the screening experiments, BUT extract was selected for a comprehensive corrosion inhibition study. Inhibition effectiveness of BUT DPL extract is found to increase with increasing concentration with 1000 ppm affording 97% protection at 25 °C. The inhibition performance increases up to 40 °C but slightly decreases as the temperature was raised to 50 °C and 60 °C. However, BUT DPL extract could afford 86% protection at 60 °C. Scanning electron microscope and atomic force spectroscopy results confirm that BUT DPL extract is indeed an effective inhibitor for X60 carbon steel in 15 wt.% HCl solution.
