RESUMO

This study aimed to examine the efficacy of a 2-week self-administered gentle mechanical skin stimulation on chronic neck and shoulder discomfort. In participants (n = 12) with chronic neck and shoulder discomfort, subjective measures of pain sensation, discomfort, and difficulty in moving using a visual analog scale (VAS, 0-10) and objective measures of 12 different joint range of motions (ROMs) for the cervical and shoulder regions, using a digital goniometer, were collected before and after self-care with contact acupuncture, called microcones. The self-care for 2 weeks significantly (p < 0.001) decreased all VAS scores to 2.2-2.3 from baseline values of 6.0-7.4. Of the 12 ROMs tested, 8 were significantly increased (p < 0.013). This open-label study suggests the use of self-care with microcones in improving subjective symptoms and joint ROMs in people suffering from chronic neck and shoulder discomfort. However, a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial is needed to further investigate the efficacy and safety of microcones.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to elucidate weekdays' sleeping condition and its influence on occurrence of general malaise in children. A total of 761 Japanese children aged 10 to 12 years were surveyed regarding their weekdays' waking time and bedtime and general malaise using a self-administered questionnaire. As the result of hierarchical cluster analysis on the sleep condition, the participants were classified into three clusters. Sleep duration was significantly longer in cluster 1 (9.35 ± 0.52 h) than in clusters 2 (7.83 ± 0.77 h) and 3 (9.02 ± 0.30 h) and significantly longer in cluster 3 than in cluster 2. Waking time was significantly later in cluster 3 (7:01 ± 0:12) than in clusters 1 (6:22 ± 0:31) and 2 (6:24 ± 0:33, p < 0.001). Bedtime was significantly later in cluster 2 (22:34 ± 0:47) than in clusters 3 (21:59 ± 0:19) and 1 (21:01 ± 0:22) and significantly later in cluster 3 than in cluster 1. There were significantly more subjects in cluster 2 than in clusters 1 and 3 who responded "nearly every day" or "occasionally" to the five of seven questionnaires related to general malaise. The current results indicate that in Japanese children aged 10 to 12 years, (1) sleeping condition of weekdays are classified into three clusters with different mean values for each of sleep duration, bedtime, and waking time, and (2) the occurrence of general malaise may be enhanced in individuals whose sleep duration is less than 8 h.

RESUMO

The dihydrolipoamide succinyltransferase (DLST) gene of the alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex (alpha-KGDC) was isolated from a rat genomic DNA library and sequenced. This gene was composed of 15 exons and 14 introns like the human DLST gene. Sequence analysis of the promoter-regulatory region of the rat DLST gene-(Dlst) showed the possible presence of a CAAT box-sequence and of the sequences for an AP-2 site and three Sp1 sites, but no TATA box-sequence was evidenced. The nucleotide sequences of introns 1 and 4 of the rat Dlst were significantly homologous to those of introns 1 and 4 of the human DLST gene. The sequence analysis of the rat Dlst suggested that the exon coding for the E3- and/or E1-binding domain may have been lost from the gene during evolution in eukaryotic DLST, possibly after mitochondrial symbiosis because prokaryotic DLST possesses the E3- and/or E1-binding domain.
