Introduction: Lebanon faces severe economic and energy crises, impacting its healthcare system, particularly vaccine storage. Traditional gas or kerosene-powered refrigerators often fail to maintain necessary temperatures for vaccine efficacy. This study explores transitioning to solar direct-drive (SDD) refrigerators to ensure reliable vaccine storage. Methods: A multi-phase methodology was employed, beginning with an inventory assessment of existing cold chain equipment. The implementation involved stepwise replacement of identified refrigerators across health facilities, including Primary Health Care Centers (PHCCs) and dispensaries. Feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact were evaluated. Results: Findings indicate that solarization significantly reduces vaccine wastage, ensures stable temperatures, and cuts operational costs by decreasing dependence on non-renewable energy sources. Over 1,000 SDD units were installed across more than 800 health facilities. Additionally, PHCC solarization improved vaccine preservation and enhanced the resilience of health services overall. Discussion: The solarization initiative demonstrates the critical role of renewable energy in strengthening healthcare infrastructure, especially in crisis-hit regions. Solar-powered systems provide a reliable and sustainable solution for vaccine storage, reduce carbon footprints, and build public trust in the immunization system. Challenges included geographical and structural limitations, which were addressed through comprehensive planning and collaboration with local stakeholders. Solarization of Lebanon's vaccine cold chain and PHCCs marks a significant step towards sustainable and resilient healthcare infrastructure. The model offers a robust framework for other regions facing similar economic and energy challenges, highlighting the importance of renewable energy solutions in healthcare.

The efficacy of immunization programs is critically dependent on robust supply chain management, a complex challenge exacerbated by expanding program scopes and evolving vaccine technologies. This comprehensive review underscores the pivotal role of Resource Centers in fortifying the immunization supply chain, presenting a paradigm shift toward enhanced national and global health outcomes. Through a detailed examination of their key activities, the article elucidates how these centers catalyze improvements across various facets of supply chain management - from the integration of suitable technology technologies and specialized training programs to the development of sustainable models and advocacy for policy prioritization. This further explores the multifaceted challenges these centers confront, including funding constraints, capacity building, and infrastructural gaps, alongside the burgeoning opportunities presented by new vaccine introductions, donor interest in health system strengthening, and the potential for broadened scope beyond immunization. By weaving together examples of existing centers worldwide, the review highlights their contributions towards optimizing vaccine logistics, enhancing data management, and ultimately achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3. The insights provided offer valuable guidance for planning and sustaining resource centers, positioning them as indispensable allies in the global pursuit of universal immunization coverage.

Integrated healthcare systems are continually pitched as major contributors towards better distribution of health outcomes and enhanced well-being. Under emergency conditions, integrated healthcare services can guarantee better access to the target population. In recent years, several crises, i.e., economic collapse, the fuel crisis, the Beirut blast, a large refugee population, and the COVID-19 pandemic, in Lebanon have led to a major shift in the health-seeking behavior of the communities, with preventive services being downprioritized despite being available and curative healthcare services being sought out as late as possible. An extensive drop in immunization coverage and an overstretched public health system presents the risk of Vaccine-Preventable Disease outbreaks and urgent intervention is needed to bridge the immunity gap. The Ministry of Public Health, Lebanon, and UNICEF Lebanon successfully demonstrated the use of an immunization platform as an entry point to reach communities for service delivery, identification and referral, screening, awareness generation, and a host of other services that can be copied for other programs including but not limited to those for Maternal and Child health, nutrition, early childhood development, COVID-19, children with disabilities, social protection, education, health emergencies like cholera, etc., and these can provide bi-directional support to each other. UNICEF along with the MoPH (Ministry of Public Health) has been working towards reaching the most vulnerable population with a bouquet of services through existing immunization touchpoints for favorable healthcare outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Nursing fraternity are at an increased risk of acquiring hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections mainly attributable to occupational risk and close contact with the patients while treatment. However, unawareness and negligence about the severity, mode of transmission and preventive measures about the disease can further predispose the nursing fraternity to a higher risk of infection. To overcome these lacunae in knowledge, a training program named Project PRAKASH was initiated for in-service nurses across the country. The objective of the program was to impart up-to-date knowledge to the nursing professionals in the management of viral hepatitis and to assess the effectiveness of the training program through pre-post-knowledge assessment survey. METHODOLOGY: One-day training program titled 'Hepatitis Induction Program' was conducted for a period of 2 years (2018-2020) among nursing professionals. It was accompanied by administration of 54-item knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) questionnaire with four sections: demographic details, knowledge (30 items), attitude (11 items) and practice (13 items), followed by post-knowledge assessment. An Impact Assessment Survey (IAS) was also administered to assess the change in attitude and practice among 10% of the attendees, at least 6 months post training. RESULT: A total of 32 one-day training programmes were organised which witnessed the training of 5,253 nursing professionals from 292 institutions across 12 states. A data of 4,474 participants were included in the final analysis: improvement in the knowledge score was significant (P-value < 0.001) with mean knowledge score of 19.3 ± 4.4 in pre-test and 25.7 ± 3.9 in the post-test. CONCLUSION: The one-day training resulted in improvement of knowledge and significant changes in the attitude and practices of the nursing professionals.

The new member of the coronavirus family created havoc in the world in few days of its discovery and was declared as a pandemic by March 2020. The enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus was first identified in a patient with dry cough, pain, and weakness for the past1 week with unknown etiology in Wuhan. The coronavirus soon spread across the globe in the next few weeks. To curb the spread of coronavirus, stringent measures such as lockdown and social distancing were enforced resulted in a declining of cases in various countries. However, unlocking, relaxation of preventive measures, and changing human behaviors led to a drastic increase in the number of COVID-19 cases resulting in the second wave of transmission. This resulted in reimposing of lockdown measures in countries such as Nepal, Italy, France, Netherland, and Germany. At present, the virus has affected over 110.7 million peoples and over 2.4 million deaths across the world, with India having the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases, following the United States of America. Furthermore, a cross-sectional view of the disease states several new strains being reported across the globe at one end and at another end there is rolling out of vaccine against COVID-19. There is still uncertainty related to curbing of the pandemic as effect of vaccine on new strains is undetermined. Thus, it is important to understand the transforming epidemiology of the virus as it helps in planning necessary steps for physicians and policymakers. The present review summarizes the updated information primarily about the epidemiology of COVID-19, from initiation to the present scenario.
