RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Endovascular intervention is an important minimally invasive surgery that requires professional skills to operate surgical instruments. Such skills are mainly gained through the traditional training paradigm of "see one, do one, teach one", rather than the guidewire simulation system. METHODS: To identify limitations of existing guidewire simulation research and suggest further research orientations, a comprehensive search on literature published from 2007 to 2021 is performed in 11 selected electronic databases. Through our scrutiny and filtration, 34 articles are selected as major studies for careful examinations. RESULTS: We identify challenges faced in the field of endovascular intervention guidewire simulation. We examine and classify guidewire simulation techniques (including guidewire models, collision detection methods and collision response methods), accuracy evaluation methods, error sources, and performance optimization methods. CONCLUSIONS: Guidewire simulation can satisfy the urgent need to train surgeons, thus more efforts should be dedicated enabling its wide application in clinical environment.

Based on the conflict-of-values theory, this study examines the influences of Machiavellianism and ethical values on anxiety in college students when they face moral dilemmas. Questionnaires on the Chinese equivalent of Machiavellianism, moral identity, and anxiety were completed by 115 Chinese college students. The results suggest that Machiavellianism and ethical values influence anxiety, and the interaction between ethical values and Machiavellianism is significant-among individuals with high ethical values, those with high levels of Machiavellianism exhibit markedly higher levels of anxiety than those with low levels of Machiavellianism. However, among individuals with low ethical values, there is no difference in anxiety between those with low or high levels of Machiavellianism. This research, depicting complex relationships among anxiety, Machiavellianism, and ethical values, suggests that leading people to do good deeds not only requires high ethical values but also necessitates the resistance to negative values such as Machiavellianism.

System justification theory holds that disadvantaged groups rationalize the current social system, even if it is unfavorable to them. Epistemic, relational, and existential needs are factors that explain this phenomenon. However, the literature has not yet examined and explained when disadvantaged groups no longer rationalize current social systems. This study uses a questionnaire survey method (N = 745) to study the moderating effect of collectivism on disadvantaged mindset and system-justifying beliefs. It found that collectivism can influence the predictive effect of disadvantaged mindset on system-justifying beliefs. For people who scored low in collectivism, a disadvantaged mindset can significantly negatively predict system-justifying beliefs; for those who scored high in collectivism, a disadvantaged mindset no longer predicts system-justifying beliefs. Therefore, these results show that collectivist values are important for explaining system justification in disadvantaged groups. When collectivist values decline, the level of rationalization of the social system by disadvantaged groups also decreases.

BACKGROUND: Due to the onset of metastases, the survival rate of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is still low. In view of this, we performed this study to screen metastasis-associated genes and lncRNAs in LUAD. METHODS: The mRNA and lncRNA expression profiles of 185 metastatic LUAD and 217 non-metastatic LAUD samples were retrieved from the TCGA database and included in this study. The differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs) and lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) between metastatic samples and non-metastatic samples of LAUD, as well as the cis nearby-targeted DEmRNAs of DElncRNAs and the DElncRNA-DEmRNA co-expression network, were obtained. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expression levels of selected DEmRNAs. Survival analysis of selected DElncRNAs and DEmRNAs was performed. RESULTS: In total, 1351 DEmRNAs and 627 DElncRNAs were screened between the LUAD primary tissue samples and metastatic samples. Then, 194 DElncRNA-nearby-targeted DEmRNA pairs and 191 DElncRNA-DEmRNA co-expression pairs were detected. Except for RHCG and KRT81, the expression of the other six DEmRNAs in the qRT-PCR results generally exhibited the same pattern as that in our integrated analysis. The expression of CRHR2, FAM83A-AS1, FAM83A and Z83843.1 was significantly correlated with the overall survival time of patients with metastatic LUAD. CONCLUSION: We speculate that two interaction pairs (FAM83A-AS1-FAM83A and Z83843.1-MATR3) and four genes (CRHR2, UGT2B15, CHGB and NEFL) are closely associated with the metastasis of LUAD.

The steroidal saponin RCE­4 (1ß, 3ß, 5ß, 25S)­spirostan­1, 3­diol 1­[α­L­rhamnopyranosyl­(1→2)­ß­D­xylopyranoside], isolated from Reineckia carnea, exerts significant anti­cervical cancer activity by inducing apoptosis. The potential effect of RCE­4 on proliferation inhibition and autophagy induction has rarely been studied. Therefore, the focus of the present study was to investigate the effects of RCE­4 on proliferation, and to elucidate the detailed mechanisms involved in autophagy induction in cervical cancer cells. CaSki cells were treated with RCE­4 or/and autophagy inhibitors, and the effect of RCE­4 on cellular proliferation was assessed by MTT assay. The pro­autophagic properties of RCE­4 were subsequently confirmed using monomeric red fluorescent protein­green fluorescent protein­microtubule­associated proteins 1A/1B light chain 3B (LC3) adenoviruses and CYTO­ID autophagy assays, and by assessing the accumulation of lipid­modified LC3 (LC3II). The mechanisms of RCE­4­induced autophagy were investigated by western blot analysis. The results demonstrated that inhibiting autophagy significantly promoted RCE­4­induced cell death, indicating that autophagy served a protective role following RCE­4 treatment. In addition, RCE­4­induced autophagy was reflected by increased expression levels of the serine/threonine­protein kinase ULK1, phosphorylated (p)­ULK1, p­Beclin­1 and LC3II, the formation of autophagosomes and autolysosomes, and sequestosome 1 (p62) degradation. Subsequent analysis indicated that RCE­4 activated the AMP­activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway by upregulating AMPK and p­AMPK, and also inhibited the PI3K and extracellular signal­regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathways by downregulating p­PI3K, p­Akt, p­mTOR, Ras, c­Raf, p­c­Raf, dual specificity mitogen­activated protein kinase kinase (MEK)1/2, p­MEK1/2 and p­Erk1/2. Additionally, with increased treatment times RCE­4 may impair lysosomal cathepsin activity and inhibit autophagy flux by suppressing the expression of AMPK, p­AMPK, ULK1, p­ULK1 and p­Beclin­1, and upregulating that of p62. These results indicated that the dual RCE­4­induced inhibition of the PI3K and ERK pathways may result in a more significant anti­tumor effect and prevent chemoresistance, compared with the inhibition of either single pathway; furthermore, dual blockade of PI3K and ERK, and the AMPK pathway may be involved in the regulation of autophagy caused by RCE­4. Taken together, RCE­4 induced autophagy to protect cancer cells against apoptosis, but AMPK­mediated autophagy was inhibited in the later stages of RCE­4 treatment. In addition, autophagy inhibition improved the therapeutic effect of RCE­4. These data highlight RCE­4 as a potential candidate for cervical cancer treatment.

Transient electronics is an emerging technology that enables unique functional transformation or the physical disappearance of electronic devices, and is attracting increasing attention for potential applications in data secured hardware as an ultimate solution against data breaches. Developing smart triggered degradation modalities of silicon (Si) remain the key challenge to achieve advanced non-recoverable on-demand transient electronics. Here, we present a novel electrochemically triggered transience mechanism of Si by lithiation, allowing complete and controllable destruction of Si devices. The depth and microstructure of the lithiation-affected zone over time is investigated in detail and the results suggest a few hours of lithiation is sufficient to create microcracks and significantly promote lithium penetration. Finite element models are proposed to confirm the mechanism. Electrochemically triggered degradation of thin film Si ribbons and Si integrated circuit chips with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors from a commercial 0.35 micrometer complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology node is performed to demonstrate the potential applications for commercial electronics. This work opens new opportunities for versatile triggered transience of Si-based devices for critical secured information systems and green consumer electronics.

BACKGROUND: Cell-seeded biomaterial scaffolds have been proposed as a future option for reconstruction of bone tissue. The ability to generate larger, functional volumes of bone has been a challenge that may be addressed through the use of perfusion bioreactors. In this study, the authors investigated use of a tubular perfusion bioreactor system for the growth and differentiation of bone marrow stromal (mesenchymal stem) cells seeded onto fibrin, a highly angiogenic biomaterial. METHODS: Cells were encapsulated within fibrin beads and cultured either within a tubular perfusion bioreactor system or statically for up to 14 days. Scaffolds were analyzed for osteogenic differentiation. A rodent cranial defect model (8-mm diameter) was used to assess the bone regeneration of scaffolds cultured in the bioreactor, statically, or used immediately after formation. Immunohistochemistry was used to visualize CD31 vessel density. Micro-computed tomographic imaging was used to visualize mineral formation within the defect volume. RESULTS: Tubular perfusion bioreactor system-cultured samples showed significantly greater osteodifferentiation, indicated by an increase in VEGF expression and mineral deposition, compared with statically cultured samples. Increased expression of OPN, RUNX2, VEGF, and CD90 was seen over time in both culture methods. After implantation, bioreactor samples exhibited greater bone formation and vessel density compared with all other groups. Analysis of micro-computed tomographic images showed full union formation through the greatest diameter of the defect in all bioreactor samples and the highest levels of mineralized volume after 8 weeks. CONCLUSION: Mesenchymal stem cells encapsulated in fibrin beads and cultured in the tubular perfusion bioreactor system resulted in increased vascularization and mineralized tissue formation in vivo relative to static culture.

In a greenhouse study, Cyperus alternifolius, Coleus blumei and Jasminum sambac were cultured in a floating phytoremediation system with plantation cups inserted into a polyfoam plate that floated in the upper part of a tank filled with 100 L domestic wastewater. The contents of chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), total P (T-P), total N (T-N), soluble P(S-P), ammonia-nitrogen (NH4+ -N) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3- -N) in the domestic wastewater were tested during the growth of these three plants. The results showed that Cyperus alternifolius and Coleus blumei could grow well in the floating phytoremediation system, their dry weight being 285.8% and 371.4% of the initial weight of planting, respectively, but Jasminum sambac could not grow well, being 125.0% of the initial weight of planting. The removal rate of TN by these 3 plants was 68.0%, 62.0% and 45.0%, and that of NO3- -N, CODCr and TP was 98.0%, 80.0% and 92.0%, 78.0%, 66.0% and 55.0%, and 90.6%, 90.5% and 88.0% respectively. Cyperus alternifolius and Coleus blumei had good effects on the removal of pollutants in the floating phytoremediation system.
