RESUMO

This work shows the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of dense-ceramic membranes made of Ce0.85Gd0.15O2-δ-LaNiO3 (CG-LN) composites, where the fluorite-perovskite ratio (CG:LN) was varied as follows: 75:25, 80:20 and 85:15 wt.%. Supports were initially characterized by XRD, SEM and electrical conductivity (using vacuum and oxygen atmospheres), to determine the composition, microstructural and ionic-electronic conductivity properties. Later, supports were infiltrated with an eutectic carbonates mixture, producing the corresponding dense dual-phase membranes, in which CO2 permeation tests were conducted. Here, CO2 permeation experiments were performed from 900 to 700°C, in the presence and absence of oxygen (flowed in the sweep membrane side). Results showed that these composites possess high CO2 permeation properties, where the O2 addition significantly improves the ionic conduction on the sweep membrane side. Specifically, the GC80-LN20 composition presented the best results due to the following physicochemical characteristics: high electronic and ionic conductivity, appropriate porosity, interconnected porous channels, as well as thermal and chemical stabilities between the composite support and carbonate phases.

RESUMO

The initial nucleation of gold clusters Aun (n = 1-5) on TiO2 rutile (110) reduced surface is studied using density functional theory and a full-potential augmented-plane-wave method implemented in the WIEN2k code. The first two gold atoms remained tied to the surface with a bond length similar to those belonging to other well-known related materials, while the other gold atoms do not spread over the surface; they preferred to form a new layer. The occurrence of relativistic effects produced a preferential triangle geometry for Au3 and a combination of triangular units for Au4 and Au5 . The Au-Au average distance increased from n = 2 to n = 5, indicating an expansion with a tendency to the bond distance found in the bulk. We are reporting an early 2D→3D transition of small folding, from Au3 →Au4 , followed by an Au4 →Au5 transition of evident 3D character.

RESUMO

This study reports the effects of exposing cells of the prototypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strain E2348/69 to static magnetic fields (SMF) of varying intensities to observe their capacity to autoaggregate and the effect on cell adherence. The results showed that bacteria exposure over the course of 5 min to an intensity of 53 mT reduced autoaggregation by 28%. However, with intensities of up to 100 mT with the same exposure time, bacteria autoaggregation was reduced by approximately 50%; and after 30 min at the same intensity, it was indistinguishable from that observed in a non-autoaggregative strain. Furthermore, it was observed that SMF treatment also modified the typical localized adherence pattern of EPEC E2348/69. The observed effects are not related to bacteria damage. The above was confirmed because, after a 107 mT SMF treatment over the course of 30 min, cell viability and membrane permeability were the same to that observed in untreated controls. The obtained results suggest that the SMF effect on the E2348/69 EPEC strain alters the expression of the bundle-forming pilus (BFP), due to the fact that the same strain without the EPEC adherence factor plasmid that encodes the BFP operon was unable to autoaggregate. Electron microscopic analyses revealed structural differences between cells exposed to SMF with respect to untreated controls. In conclusion, the SMF treatment of 107 mT for 30 min reduced EPEC E2348/69 autoaggregation and modified its adherence pattern, with both events likely being associated with changes in BFP expression.
