RESUMO
Magnetite and silica-magnetite composites were used as adsorbents for the isolation of genomic DNA from maize kernels. Two methods are described for the preparation of silica-magnetite composites, both of which afford higher yields of genomic DNA than when using magnetite alone, or a commerically available kit. DNA isolated using silica-magnetite was suitable for use in further applications such as polymerase chain reaction amplification and enzyme digestion.

Enflurane, a new volatile anesthetic agent, was compared with halothane as components of a commonly used clinical anesthetic regime in the pony. Enflurane provides satisfactory general anesthesia when administered at a maintenance concentration of approximately 1.5-2.5%, in combination with a 1:1 nitrous oxide-oxygen mixture. With both agents cardiac rhythm and pulse were stable, however significant arterial hypotension occurred, especially during and following induction, being anesthetic concentration dependent. Hypoventilation was induced by both agents, there being no significant quantitative difference in respiratory depression despite significantly lower respiratory rates with enflurane. Serum electrolytes and liver enzymes did not change significantly with either regime. Emergence from anesthesia was smooth, and significantly more rapid with enflurance. Post-anesthetic complications were not observed with either agent.

This article presents the case of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Health Center's unique community management system in which neighborhood workers have been developed to assume managerial responsibilities and are directing the Center. The Martin Luther King Center experience is instructive because the Center was able to achieve significant community control by focusing primarily on the internal dimension of control, namely, management, without experiencing destructive conflicts and the deterioration of health services.
