RESUMO

In view of the planned new edition of the most recent version of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of primary breast cancer published in 2015, it was decided at the ESMO Asia Meeting in November 2018, by both the ESMO and the Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO), to convene a special face-to-face guidelines meeting in 2019 in Seoul. The aim was to adapt the latest ESMO 2019 guidelines to take into account the ethnic and geographical differences associated with the treatment of early breast cancer in Asian patients. These guidelines represent the consensus opinions reached by experts in the treatment of patients with early breast cancer representing the oncology societies of Korea (KSMO), China (CSCO), India (ISMPO) Japan (JSMO), Malaysia (MOS), Singapore (SSO) and Taiwan (TOS). The voting was based on scientific evidence, and was independent of both the current treatment practices, and the drug availability and reimbursement situations, in the individual participating Asian countries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pseudo-outbreaks of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in association with the water supply system in hospitals have been previously reported. We found that the frequency of NTM isolation in clinical samples increased after the reconstruction and renovation of a hospital in Japan in 2014. AIM: To analyse NTM, their possible relationship with the hospital water supply system, and outcomes of preventive measures. METHODS: Environmental samples obtained from the water supply in hospital wards were tested for NTM. On obtaining positive results, the bacteria were further analysed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). FINDINGS: The PCR products of NTM showed that most samples tested positive for Mycobacterium paragordonae. Because none of the analysed patients developed any disease due to these bacteria, this event was considered a pseudo-outbreak. Investigation of the water supply system revealed that samples obtained from the recently attached aerators/rectifiers during hospital renovation tested positive for these bacteria. Therefore, measures to remove aerators/rectifiers and prevent patients from drinking tap water in the hospital were introduced. Thereafter, the frequency of NTM-positive samples significantly decreased in the hospital. CONCLUSION: This study is one of the few reports which reveal the possibility of pseudo-outbreaks of M. paragordonae in hospitals, hence raising the question whether aerators/rectifiers should be used in hospitals at all, because their mesh structure may promote NTM proliferation in supplied water. The importance of surveillance of bacteria derived from the environment, particularly after hospital reconstruction/renovation, is re-emphasized.

RESUMO

Lipoid pneumonia is an uncommon noninfectious inflammatory lung disease characterized by lipid deposition in the alveoli, and its etiology and treatment have not been elucidated. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman who developed lipoid pneumonia 9 months after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant for chronic myelogenous leukemia in lymphoid blast crisis. She complained of progressive cough and dyspnea shortly after discontinuation of immunosuppressive therapy given for graft-vs-host disease. Computed tomography demonstrated diffuse ground-glass opacities in the lungs, and pulmonary function test revealed restrictive impairment. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed milky appearance, and transbronchial lung biopsy specimen revealed foamy macrophages infiltrating the alveoli. Based on these findings, she was diagnosed as having lipoid pneumonia. Prednisolone (1 mg/kg/d) promptly improved the symptoms, pulmonary shadows, and pulmonary function. The findings and clinical course of this case suggest that lipoid pneumonia should be recognized as one of the pulmonary complications of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial peptides have attracted much attention as a member of disease-associated molecules in systemic sclerosis (SSc), which is pathologically characterized by immune abnormalities, vasculopathy and tissue fibrosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential contribution of one of the antimicrobial peptide psoriasin to the development of SSc. METHODS: Psoriasin expression in the skin samples and sera derived from SSc patients and its correlation with clinical parameters were analysed. Psoriasin expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry with skin samples from SSc patients and healthy controls. Serum levels of psoriasin were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 51 SSc patients and 19 healthy controls and assessed for the association with clinical symptoms. RESULTS: The expression of psoriasin was elevated in the epidermis of SSc lesional skin. Serum psoriasin levels were higher in SSc patients, especially in diffuse cutaneous SSc patients with disease duration of <6 years, than in healthy controls. With respect to clinical association, SSc patients with interstitial lung disease, telangiectasia and pitting scars had significantly augmented levels of serum psoriasin than those without each of these symptoms. In the subgroup of patients with interstitial lung disease, the elevation of serum psoriasin levels was associated with higher ground-glass opacity scores. Furthermore, serum psoriasin levels were decreased after the treatment with intravenous cyclophosphamide pulse as compared to baseline values. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate a possible contribution of psoriasin to the development of clinical symptoms associated with vascular and epithelial abnormalities and inflammation in SSc, further supporting the roles of antimicrobial peptides in the SSc pathogenesis.

RESUMO

Duckweed offers the promise of a co-benefit culture combining water purification with biomass production. Acinetobacter calcoaceticus P23 is a plant growth-promoting bacterium isolated from a duckweed, Lemna aequinoctialis. This study quantified its growth-promoting effect on three duckweeds (L. aoukikusa, L. minor, and Spirodela polyrhiza) in sterile Hoagland solution and evaluated its usefulness in duckweed culture under non-sterile conditions. P23 promoted growth of three duckweeds in sterile Hoagland solution at low to high nutrient concentrations (1.25-10 mg NO3-N/L and 0.25-2.0 mg PO4-P/L). It increased the biomass production of L. aequinoctialis 3.8-4.3-fold, of L. minor 2.3-3.3-fold, and of S. polyrhiza 1.4-1.5-fold after 7 days compared with noninoculated controls. P23 also increased the biomass production of L. minor 2.4-fold in pond water and 1.7-fold in secondary effluent of a sewage treatment plant under non-sterile conditions at laboratory-scale experiments. P23 rescued L. minor from growth inhibition caused by microorganisms indigenous to the pond water. The results demonstrate that the use of P23 in duckweed culture can improve the efficiency of duckweed biomass production, and a positive effect of P23 on duckweed-based wastewater treatment can be assumed.

RESUMO

Daptomycin (DAP) is widely used in the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. The emergence of DAP non-susceptible MRSA strains during therapy is a major concern in clinical settings. Recent studies revealed that MRSA spontaneously reverts to a subsequent methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) strain. However, it is not clear whether DAP non-susceptible MRSA has the ability to revert to a susceptible strain. We obtained an MRSA strain pair, DAP non-susceptible strain and subsequent DAP susceptible strain, from a patient. To understand the underlying mechanism by which DAP non-susceptible MRSA reverts to a susceptible strain, we performed genetic and phenotypic analysis in the strain pair. Although whole-genome analysis revealed four missense mutations, including L826F in mprF, in both strains, the net cell-surface charge was similar between the DAP non-susceptible and susceptible strains. However, the thickness of the cell wall was higher in the DAP non-susceptible strain, which was decreased to the same level as the control after reversion to the DAP susceptible strain. Moreover, the non-susceptible strain showed higher mRNA expression of the two-component system (TCS), such as VraSR, yycG and GraS, with the up-regulated transcription levels of cell-wall biosynthesis-related genes. The expression levels of those genes were decreased after reversion to the susceptible strain. These results indicated that DAP non-susceptibility due to up-regulation of the TCS and cell-wall biosynthesis-related genes may be reversible by the discontinuation of DAP, leading to reversion to the DAP susceptible phenotype.

RESUMO

BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) is recognized as a pathogen that causes diseases such as hemorrhagic cystitis and nephritis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or renal transplantation. BKPyV-associated disease is thought to occur through reactivation under immunosuppression. However, the possibility of its nosocomial transmission and the clinical significance of such transmission have not been elucidated. During a 6-month period, nine adult patients (median age: 47 years) who had hematological disorders and who were treated with HSCT (n = 7) or chemotherapy (n = 2) in a single hematology department developed hemorrhagic cystitis due to BKPyV infection. The polymerase chain reaction products of BKPyV DNA obtained from each patient were sequenced. Of the nine patients, six had subtype I, 2 had subtype IV, and 1 had subtype II or III. In the alignment of sequences, four and two of the six subtype I strains were completely homologous (100%). These results strongly suggest that BKPyV has the potential to cause nosocomial infection within a medical facility, especially among recipients of HSCT. Further studies are clearly warranted to elucidate the route(s) of BKPyV transmission in order to establish optimal infection control.

RESUMO

The relationship between the laser power and the three-dimensional distribution of boron (B) in silicon (Si) measured by laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT) is investigated. The ultraviolet laser employed in this study has a fixed wavelength of 355nm. The measured distributions are almost uniform and homogeneous when using low laser power, while clear B accumulation at the low-index pole of single-crystalline Si and segregation along the grain boundaries in polycrystalline Si are observed when using high laser power (100pJ). These effects are thought to be caused by the surface migration of atoms, which is promoted by high laser power. Therefore, for ensuring a high-fidelity APT measurement of the B distribution in Si, high laser power is not recommended.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: LL-37 is an antimicrobial peptide with pleiotropic effects on the immune system, angiogenesis and tissue remodelling. These are cardinal pathological events in systemic sclerosis (SSc). OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the potential role of LL-37 in SSc. METHODS: The expression of target molecules was evaluated by immunostaining and quantitative reverse-transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction in human and murine skin. The mechanisms regulating LL-37 expression in endothelial cells were examined by gene silencing and chromatin immunoprecipitation. Serum LL-37 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: In SSc lesional skin, LL-37 expression was increased in dermal fibroblasts, perivascular inflammatory cells, keratinocytes and, particularly, dermal small vessels. Expression positively correlated with interferon-α expression, possibly reflecting LL-37-dependent induction of interferon-α. In SSc animal models, bleomycin-treated skin exhibited the expression pattern of CRAMP, a murine homologue of LL-37, similar to that of LL-37 in SSc lesional skin. Furthermore, Fli1+/- mice showed upregulated expression of CRAMP in dermal small vessels. Fli1 binding to the CAMP (LL-37 gene) promoter and Fli1 deficiency-dependent induction of LL-37 were also confirmed in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells. In the analysis of sera, patients with SSc had serum LL-37 levels significantly higher than in healthy controls. Furthermore, serum LL-37 levels positively correlated with skin score and the activity of alveolitis and were significantly elevated in patients with digital ulcers compared with those without. CONCLUSIONS: LL-37 upregulation, induced by Fli1 deficiency at least in endothelial cells, potentially contributes to the development of skin sclerosis, interstitial lung disease and digital ulcers in SSc.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR), expressed predominantly on endothelial cells, plays a critical role in the regulation of the coagulation system and also mediates various cytoprotective effects by binding and activating protein C. So far, the role of EPCR has not been studied in systemic sclerosis (SSc). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the potential contribution of EPCR to the development of SSc. METHODS: EPCR expression was examined in skin samples and cultivated dermal microvascular endothelial cells by immunostaining, immunoblotting and/or quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Fli1, binding to the PROCR promoter, was assessed by chromatin immunoprecipitation. Serum EPCR levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 65 patients with SSc and 20 healthy subjects. RESULTS: EPCR expression was decreased in dermal small vessels of SSc lesional skin compared with those of healthy control skin. Transcription factor Fli1, deficiency of which is implicated in SSc vasculopathy, occupied the PROCR promoter, and EPCR expression was suppressed in Fli1 small interfering RNA-treated endothelial cells and dermal small vessels of Fli1(+/-) mice. In patients with SSc, decreased serum EPCR levels were associated with diffuse skin involvement, interstitial lung disease and digital ulcers. Furthermore, serum EPCR levels inversely correlated with plasma levels of plasmin-α2-plasmin inhibitor complex (PIC). Importantly, bosentan significantly reversed circulating EPCR and PIC levels in patients with SSc, and the expression of Fli1 and EPCR in dermal small vessels was elevated in patients treated with bosentan compared with untreated patients. CONCLUSIONS: Endothelial EPCR downregulation due to Fli1 deficiency may contribute to hypercoagulation status leading to tissue fibrosis and impaired peripheral circulation in SSc.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lipocalin-2 is an adipocytokine implicated in apoptosis, innate immunity, angiogenesis, and the development of chronic kidney disease. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of lipocalin-2 in systemic sclerosis (SSc). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum lipocalin-2 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 50 patients with SSc and 19 healthy subjects. Lipocalin-2 expression was evaluated in the skin of patients with SSc and bleomycin (BLM)-treated mice and in Fli1-deficient endothelial cells by reverse transcriptase-real time polymerase chain reaction, immunoblotting and/or immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Although serum lipocalin-2 levels were comparable between patients with SSc and healthy controls, the prevalence of scleroderma renal crisis was significantly higher in patients with SSc with elevated serum lipocalin-2 levels than in those with normal levels. Furthermore, serum lipocalin-2 levels inversely correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate in patients with SSc with renal dysfunction. Among patients with SSc with normal renal function, serum lipocalin-2 levels positively correlated with skin score in patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc with disease duration of < 3 years and inversely correlated with estimated right ventricular systolic pressure in total patients with SSc. Importantly, in SSc lesional skin, lipocalin-2 expression was increased in dermal fibroblasts and endothelial cells. In BLM-treated mice, lipocalin-2 was highly expressed in dermal fibroblasts, but not in endothelial cells. On the other hand, the deficiency of transcription factor Fli1, which is implicated in SSc vasculopathy, induced lipocalin-2 expression in cultivated endothelial cells. CONCLUSIONS: Lipocalin-2 may be involved in renal dysfunction and dermal fibrosis of SSc. Dysregulated matrix metalloproteinase-9/lipocalin-2-dependent angiogenesis due to Fli1 deficiency may contribute to the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with SSc.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the possible causative role of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) in the development of exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: In a cross-sectional study at an institutional setting, 150 control subjects who had senile cataract or nasolacrimal duct stenosis and who were older than 50 years were enrolled. The background data for 89 patients with typical AMD (tAMD) and 138 patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) were used for comparison. Their medical records were taken for history of CSC, hypertension, systemic steroid use, and smoking. The fundus was also evaluated for signs of atrophic retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) tract and for focal photocoagulation scars in the macula. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, gender, and history of hypertension, systemic steroid use, and smoking, history of CSC was significantly more frequent (P<0.0001) in patients with PCV (15 patients, 10.9%) compared with patients with tAMD (2 patients, 2.2%) or control subjects (0 patients). On fundoscopy, an atrophic RPE tract (seven patients) or a focal photocoagulation scar (one patient) was observed only in patients with PCV (eight patients, 5.8%), and the frequency was statistically significant compared with that with tAMD (P=0.0143) or control subjects (P=0.0143). The laterality of CSC and AMD involved the same eye in 9 of 10 patients among those who had unilateral AMD and a reported unilateral CSC history. CONCLUSION: A history of CSC may be a predisposing factor for the development of PCV in the Japanese population.

RESUMO

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is applied to a series of bis(aniline)fluorene and bis(xylidine)fluorene-based cardo polyimide and bis(phenol)fluorene-based polysulfone membranes. It was found that favorable amounts of positronium (Ps, the positron-electron bound state) form in cardo polyimides with the 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) moiety and bis(phenol)fluorene-based cardo polysulfone, but no Ps forms in most of the polyimides with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) moieties. A bis(xylidine)fluorene-based polyimide membrane containing PMDA and BTDA moieties exhibits a little Ps formation but the ortho-positronium (o-Ps, the triplet state of Ps) lifetime of this membrane anomalously shortens with increasing temperature, which we attribute to chemical reaction of o-Ps. Correlation between the hole size (V(h)) deduced from the o-Ps lifetime and diffusion coefficients of O2 and N2 for polyimides with the 6FDA moiety and cardo polysulfone showing favorable Ps formation is discussed based on free volume theory of gas diffusion. It is suggested that o-Ps has a strong tendency to probe larger holes in rigid chain polymers with wide hole size distributions such as those containing cardo moieties, resulting in deviations from the previously reported correlations for common polymers such as polystyrene, polycarbonate, polysulfone, and so forth.

RESUMO

Zinc oxide that has the photocatalytic activity is used as a white pigment for cosmetics. A certain degree of sebum on the skin is decomposed by the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. In this work, zinc phosphates were prepared from zinc nitrate and phosphoric acid at pH 5 and 7 with and without the addition of sodium lactate and ultrasonic treatment as a novel white pigment for use in cosmetics. The chemical composition, powder properties, photocatalytic activity, colour phase, moisture retention and smoothness of the zinc phosphates were studied. The obtained materials had a Zn/P ratio of about 1.5, which corresponds to zinc orthophosphate Zn3 (PO4 )2 . Samples prepared with ultrasonic treatment indicated the high ratios of large particles in scanning electron microscopy images and particle-size distributions. The photocatalytic activity of these zinc phosphate particles was too less to protect the sebum on the skin. The materials obtained and their thermal products at 100°C showed a high reflectance within the range of visible light. The slipping resistance and roughness of the powder were enough low for use in cosmetics.

RESUMO

Both tacrolimus and glycopeptide antibiotics are known to be nephrotoxic, and are often concomitantly given after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or solid organ transplantation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the nephrotoxicity of concomitant use of tacrolimus and glycopeptide antibiotics in HSCT recipients. We retrospectively evaluated 67 patients who received intravenous tacrolimus and teicoplanin concomitantly for >4 days after allogeneic HSCT for hematologic diseases. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) was performed in all patients for both tacrolimus and teicoplanin. The median age of the patients was 48 years (range: 16-62), and the median duration of the co-administration of tacrolimus and teicoplanin was 11 days (range: 4-40). The mean serum creatinine (sCr) level tended to be elevated after the co-administration (from 0.69 ± 0.26 to 0.75 ± 0.30 mg/dL; P = 0.08); however, a 2-fold or greater increase in sCr was observed only in 2 (3.0%) patients. Increased sCr was reversible, and no patient required hemodialysis. These results suggest that the incidence of clinically significant nephrotoxicity can be minimized if the TDM of each drug is properly applied.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early lesions of localized scleroderma are histologically characterized by perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate in the reticular dermis and swollen endothelial cells. However, there have been few information regarding histological features other than these findings in localized scleroderma. OBJECTIVE: Since en coup de sabre (ECDS) is a certain subset of localized scleroderma with a relatively uniform clinical manifestation, we focused on this disease subset and evaluated its histopathological features. METHODS: A total of 16 patients with ECDS were retrospectively evaluated on the basis of clinical and histological findings. RESULTS: Regardless of clinical manifestations, vacuolar degeneration was found in all of the ECDS patients. Importantly, keratinocyte necroses were restricted to early and active ECDS lesions. In early ECDS patients (disease duration of <3 years), moderate to severe perivascular and/or periappendageal lymphocytic infiltrate and vacuolar changes in follicular epithelium were more prominent, whereas epidermal atrophy was less frequently observed, than in late ECDS patients (disease duration of ≥6 years). CONCLUSION: Vacuolar degeneration at the dermoepidermal junction is a common histological feature in ECDS and perivascular and/or periappendageal lymphocytic infiltrate and vacuolar degeneration of follicular epithelium are characteristic especially in early ECDS, further supporting a canonical idea that the elimination of mutated epidermal cells by immune surveillance contributes to tissue damage and resultant fibrosis in localized scleroderma.

RESUMO

The efficacy of two rhizobacteria (Sphingobium fuliginis TIK1 and Sphingobium sp. IT4) of Phragmites australis for the sustainable treatment of water polluted with phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) was investigated. Strains TIK1 and IT4 have recently been isolated from Phragmites rhizosphere and shown to degrade various 4-alkylphenols-TIK1 via phenolic ring hydroxylation and meta-cleavage and IT4 via ipso-hydroxylation. The two strains also degraded bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol B, bisphenol E, bisphenol F, bisphenol P and bisphenol S (BPS). Thus, strains TIK1 and IT4 have wide degradation spectra for phenolic EDCs. The two strains utilized Phragmites root extracts as a sole carbon source and sustainably colonized Phragmites roots, where they degraded phenolic EDCs. In sequencing batch reactor experiments using Phragmites in association with TIK1 or IT4, both associations repeatedly removed phenolic EDCs from polluted secondary effluent water (BPA, BPS, 4-tert-butylphenol, 4-tert-octylphenol and 4-nonylphenol) from polluted secondary effluent water. The results suggest that hydroponic systems using Phragmites-TIK and Phragmites-IT4 associations would be useful for sustainable treatment of polluted waters containing various phenolic EDCs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) 12 is one of the metalloproteinase-type ADAMs and possesses extracellular metalloprotease and cell-binding functions. ADAM12 is expressed in two alternative forms, such as a membrane-anchored form (ADAM12-L) and a short secreted form (ADAM12-S). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical significance of serum ADAM12-S levels in systemic sclerosis (SSc). METHODS: Serum ADAM12-S levels were determined by a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 61 SSc patients and 18 healthy controls. RESULTS: Serum ADAM12-S levels were significantly increased in diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc) patients than in healthy controls (0.417 ± 0.389 vs. 0.226 ± 0.065 ng/mL; P < 0.05), while being comparable between limited cutaneous SSc (0.282 ± 0.258 ng/mL) and healthy controls. Serum ADAM12-S levels significantly elevated in dcSSc patients with disease duration of ≤ 6 years (0.537 ± 0.449 ng/mL, P < 0.05), but not in dcSSc with disease duration of >6 years (0.225 ± 0.049 ng/mL), compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, in dcSSc patients with disease duration of ≤ 6 years, serum ADAM12-S levels correlated positively with modified Rodnan total skin thickness score, ground glass score, and serum C-reactive protein values, while showed inverse correlation with fibrosis score. CONCLUSION: Elevated serum ADAM12-S levels are associated with elevated serum inflammatory marker, severity of skin fibrosis, and activity of interstitial lung disease in dcSSc, suggesting the possible contribution of ADAM12-S to the pathological events in this disorder.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Retinol binding protein-4 (RBP-4) is a member of adipocytokines, which is potentially associated with fibrosis, vasodilation, and angiogenesis in addition to insulin resistance. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical significance of serum RBP4 levels in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), which is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis and vasculopathy. METHODS: Serum RBP4 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 62 SSc patients and 19 healthy controls. RESULTS: Similar to patients with chronic kidney disease, serum RBP4 levels inversely correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate in SSc patients with renal dysfunction. Therefore, analyses were carried out by excluding SSc patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) . Serum RBP4 levels were significantly lower in diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc) than in control subjects [median (25-75 percentile); 25.8 µg/mL (19.6-47.0) vs. 43.1 µg/mL (31.7-53.4), P < 0.05], while there was no significant difference between limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) [28.0 µg/mL (25.4-43.3)] and control subjects. In both of dcSSc and lcSSc, patients with Raynaud's phenomenon had RBP4 levels significantly lower than those without. Furthermore, serum RBP4 levels inversely correlated with pulmonary function test results in dcSSc and with right ventricular systolic pressure in lcSSc. CONCLUSION Decreased RBP4 levels are associated with the prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon in dcSSc and lcSSc, with the severity of interstitial lung disease in dcSSc, and with the degree of pulmonary vascular involvement in lcSSc, suggesting the possible contribution of RBP4 to the pathological events in this disorder.
