The objective was to evaluate the anthropometric indicators and dietary intake of toddlers attending private clinics in Guadalajara. In a cross-sectional study, 101 toddlers aged 12 to 24 months were included. They were born full term, had an adequate weight for gestational age, and attended private clinics in Guadalajara. Two 24 h dietary recalls were administered. Anthropometric measurements were taken, and anthropometric indices were estimated. Student's t test or the Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, and odds ratio were used for quantitative or qualitative variables. Males had lower Z scores for the weight/age index than females. During the week, energy intake was excessive in males [OR = 5.5 (95% CI 1.4, 20.8)], and cholesterol intake was insufficient in females [OR = 3.03 (95% CI 1.2, 7.1)]. On weekends, energy [OR = 2.5 (95% CI 1.1, 5.7)] and fiber intake [OR = 3.1 (95% CI 1.2, 7.8)] were insufficient in females. Most of the toddlers who attend the private clinics in the upper-middle socioeconomic stratum of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area had excessive protein intake, excessive consumption of added sugars was frequent, and there was insufficient intake of vitamin D and calcium. Sex was shown to be a factor influencing nutrient intake in these toddlers aged 12-24 months. Males had a Z-score of weight/age lower than females, suggesting nutritional risk.

BACKGROUND: Body composition assessment in children with cerebral palsy (CP) is a challenge, specially the fat percentage. There are different methods that can be used to estimate the fat percentage in this population, such as anthropometric equations, but there is still a need to determine which is the best and most accurate. The purpose of the study was to determine the method that best estimates the fat percentage in children from all CP subtypes and levels of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). METHODS: Analytical cross-sectional study in which 108 children with CP diagnosed by a pediatric neurologist were included with any type of dysfunction and from all levels of the GFMCS. Slaughter equation, Gurka equation and Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as reference method, were used. Groups were stratified by sex, CP subtypes, GMFCS level and Tanner stage. Median differences, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman's correlation coefficients and simple regressions were used, also multivariate models were performed. RESULTS: The Slaughter equation differed from the other methods in the total population and when it was compared by sex, CP subtypes, gross motor function and Tanner stage. The Gurka equation showed significant differences by sex and gross motor function. Gurka equation correlated positively and significantly with BIA to estimate the fat percentage in all the CP subtypes and levels of the GMFCS. Tricipital skinfold (TSF), arm fat area (AFA) and weight for age index (W/A) showed the highest variability with respect to fat percentage. CONCLUSION: Gurka equation is more appropriate and accurate than Slaughter equation to estimate the fat percentage in children with CP from all subtypes and levels of the GMFCS.

BACKGROUND: Feeding practices in the first two years of life have a direct impact on nutritional status and adiposity. The purpose of this study was to identify the differences in feeding practices during the first two years of life by sex and type of feeding in the first semester of postnatal life and their relationships with adiposity in toddlers. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study that included 150 toddlers aged 12 to 24 months who were healthy, full-term, and had adequate weight for their gestational ages, was conducted at the New Civil Hospital and at a private practice in Guadalajara. Body compositions were obtained by bioelectrical impedance (BIA) measurements, and a modified questionnaire was used. Then, the parents completed two 24-h dietary recalls. In addition to the descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used in the contrast analysis of the quantitative variables. To analyze the qualitative variables, we used X2 tests. Afterward, linear regression tests were conducted to identify the relationships between adiposity and feeding practices during the first two years. RESULTS: There were direct relationships between adiposity and duration of full breastfeeding (r = 0.610, p = 0.021), age of introduction of ultra-processed products (r = 0.311, p = 0.011), sugar (r = 0.186; p = 0.024) and age at which eggs were introduced (r = -0.202; p = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: Adiposity was related to feeding practices in the first two years of life in toddlers.

BACKGROUND: There is a possibility that excess body fat affects bone mass gain and may compromise skeletal health in obese children. The purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition in normal weight, overweight and obese children. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 6- to 11-year-old children who attended the hospital's outpatient clinic. They were apparently healthy and had no history of prematurity, low birth weight, or chronic diseases. Body mass index (BMI) was used to identify subjects as normal weight, overweight or obese. BMD and body composition were assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The BMD values (total and lumbar spine) were compared between normal weight, overweight and obese children. Correlation coefficients were calculated, and multivariate models were performed. RESULTS: Forty-nine children were included: 16 with normal weight, 15 that were overweight and 18 with obesity; the mean age was 8.4 ± 1.7 years. All the participants had a normal BMD (> - 2 SD). BMD was higher in obese children and had a positive correlation with total and trunk lean mass in the three study groups (p < 0.001). In obese children, an inverse correlation of lumbar spine BMD (Z score) with total and trunk fat mass (p < 0.05) was identified. In the multivariate models (with the whole group), the total lean mass was the only significant variable that explained BMD variability. CONCLUSIONS: BMD in obese children was higher than that in normal weight children, which is explained by their greater lean mass and not by excess body fat. In obese children, a higher fat mass was related to a lower lumbar spine BMD. Lean mass had a direct correlation with BMD in the three study groups and was the most important predictor of BMD, reflecting the importance of strengthening the muscular system through performing physical activity and practicing a healthy lifestyle.

RESUMO

La creciente epidemia de obesidad ha sido uno de los retos más importantes de salud pública en México durante los últimos años. Con apoyo de la Federación Mundial de Obesidad, en 2021 formamos un grupo de profesionales para identificar y resumir las acciones prioritarias en las que puede enfocarse nuestro país para hacer frente a esta epidemia. Al proceso de desarrollo y discusión de este grupo se sumaron más de 1 000 profesionales de la salud para retomar recomendaciones de documentos y guías de alto nivel previamente publicados. En conmemoración del Día Mundial de la Obesidad, en este 2022 se presenta esta postura como insumo para el desarrollo de acciones en el ámbito profesional y de los diferentes sectores, en la que se incluyen 10 recomendaciones de acción, desde la perspectiva poblacional hasta la atención individualizada, y se enfatiza en la importancia de la participación social, de las intervenciones integrales con visión centrada en la persona y de la sostenibilidad planetaria, además de mejorar la educación y las campañas de difusión, propiciar un ambiente promotor de entornos activos y blindar de conflictos de interés los esfuerzos de prevención y control. La postura hace un llamado para abordar la obesidad de manera seria, con base en la evidencia científica, oportuna e integral, con enfoque de curso de vida, de forma ética y sensible, y sin perpetuar las barreras del estigma de peso en la sociedad.

Abstract: In recent decades, the growing obesity epidemic in Mexico has become one of the most important public health challenges faced by the country. With support from the World Obesity Federation, we formed a working group in 2021 to identify and summarize priority actions that Mexico can take to face this epidemic. More than 1 000 health professionals joined the development and discussion process. Recommendations from previously published, high-level documents and guidelines were taken into account. In commemoration of World Obesity Day 2022, this statement is presented as input for health care professionals to develop actions to address obesity. The statement includes 10 recommendations that include population-level and individual-level actions. It emphasizes the importance of social participation, comprehensive interventions with a person- centered perspective, planetary sustainability, on improving education and communication campaigns, as well as fostering a built environment that promotes active living, and shielding prevention and control efforts from conflicts of interest. The statement calls for obesity to be treated seriously, based on scientific evidence, in a timely and comprehensive manner, employing a life-course and ethical approach that does not perpetuate weight stigma in society.

PURPOSE: Appetitive traits in adults and their associations with weight can be measured using the Adult Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (AEBQ). The aim of this study was to confirm the factor structure of the Spanish AEBQ (AEBQ-Esp) in a Mexican sample and explore associations between the eight traits with body mass index (BMI). METHOD: A sample of 1023 adults, mean age of 36.8 ± 12.8 years, was recruited from Guadalajara, Mexico. Researchers weighed and measured participants, and they completed the AEBQ-Esp either online or in paper format and reported sociodemographic data. To test two alternative factor structures (eight factors including Hunger; seven factors excluding Hunger), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used. Internal reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha; test-retest reliability was assessed using intra-class correlation coefficients. Multivariate linear regressions were used to test for associations between the AEBQ subscales and BMI, adjusted for age, sex, format of AEBQ responses, education, marital and employment status. RESULTS: A seven-factor structure was the best model fit using CFA, excluding the Hunger subscale but similar to the original AEBQ. Internal reliability was good for all subscales (Cronbach's α = 0.70-0.86), and the intra-class correlation coefficient (0.70-0.91) reflected good test-retest reliability. In the fully adjusted models, Satiety Responsiveness [ß = - 0.61; (- 1.01, - 0.21)] and Slowness in Eating [ß = - 0.70; (- 1.01, - 0.39)] were negatively associated with BMI, and Emotional Over-Eating [ß = 0.94; (0.62, 1.27)] was positively associated with BMI. CONCLUSIONS: The AEBQ-Esp (excluding Hunger) appears to be a valid and reliable psychometric questionnaire for measuring appetitive traits in a Mexican Spanish-speaking population. Some traits appear to be associated with BMI in adulthood and warrant further exploration. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies. Although this was just an observational study, it was well designed and provided new evidence.

The polyamine content of human breast milk, which is the first exogenous source of polyamines for the newborn, can be affected by several factors associated with the mother, the infant, or breastfeeding itself. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different breastfeeding factors on the polyamines found in human milk. For this study, a cohort of 83 mothers was considered for up to 4 months, and a subgroup of 33 mothers were followed during the first six months of breastfeeding. Two breast milk samples were collected at each sampling point (foremilk and hindmilk) and the polyamine content was determined by UHPLC-FL. Polyamine levels varied considerably between the mothers and tended to decrease over time. Putrescine was the minor polyamine, whereas spermidine and spermine contents were very similar. The concentrations of the three polyamines were significantly higher in hindmilk than foremilk (p < 0.001). Spermidine and spermine levels decreased significantly through the lactation progress (p < 0.05). Finally, slightly higher levels of polyamines were observed in the milk of mothers providing partial, rather than full, breastfeeding, although the differences were not significant. The polyamine content in human milk was found to change during a single feed (foremilk versus hindmilk) and as lactation progressed, mainly in response to the specific circumstances of the newborn.

Feeding choices in the early months of life are key determinants of growth during infancy. Polyamines participate in cell proliferation and differentiation, and it has also been suggested that polyamine metabolism plays a role in adipogenesis. As the main exogenous source of polyamines in the infant is human milk, the aim of this work was to study if the type of breastfeeding received and the polyamine intake from human milk has an influence on infant anthropometric parameters. A cohort of 78 full-term healthy newborns was followed up until 4 months of age; 55 were fully and 23 partially breastfed. Anthropometric measurements were taken at 2 and 4 months, when human milk samples were also collected for analysis of polyamine content by UHPLC-FL. Fully breastfed infants had a better anthropometric profile than those partially breastfed (p < 0.05). Furthermore, polyamine intake in partially breastfed infants was significantly lower compared to those fully breastfed. However, only two of the 15 anthropometric indicators evaluated (triceps skinfold and mean upper arm circumference) showed a significant inverse association with polyamine content in human milk and intake (p < 0.05). Infant growth and body composition differ according to the type of breastfeeding received. Based on the weak associations between polyamines and anthropometric indicators, it is not possible to conclude the influence of polyamines in infant growth and body composition.

Background: It has been observed that breastfeeding mobilizes the deposits of fat that accumulate during pregnancy and promotes weight loss through energy expenditure. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that full breastfeeding (FBF) reduces anthropometric and body composition indicators in women between the 8th and the 16th week postpartum. Methods: In a nonrandom cohort study, 170 mothers at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara, Guadalajara, México, were enrolled: FBF 74, partial breastfeeding (PBF) 57, and human milk substitutes (HMS) 39. Anthropometric indicators and body composition were measured at the 8th and 16th week postpartum. We performed analysis of variance to compare body composition according to the type of feeding and paired Student's t-test to compare the changes from the 8th to 16th week postpartum. Results: We found that FBF mothers had a trend to lower arm fat area and triceps skinfold than PBF and HMS mothers at 8 and 16 weeks postpartum. We observed a decrease in weight (p = 0.004), weight/age index (p = 0.003), body mass index (p = 0.003), hip circumference (p = 0.037), and lean mass (p = 0.003) from 8 to 16 weeks postpartum in mothers who offered FBF. The mid-upper arm circumference, the arm total area, and their z-score increased in the three feeding groups. Conclusions: Our results show that FBF mothers had some lower adiposity from 8 to 16 weeks postpartum compared with the result observed among PBF mothers and those who utilized HMS.

The main objective was to assess the efficacy of a probiotic (Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938), a prebiotic (agave inulin), and a synbiotic on the stool characteristics in children with cerebral palsy and chronic constipation. Thirty-seven children with cerebral palsy and chronic constipation were included. The probiotic group received 1 × 108 colony forming unit (cfu) of L. reuteri DSM 17938 plus placebo, the prebiotic group received 4 g of agave inulin plus placebo, the synbiotic group received L. reuteri DSM 17938 plus agave inulin, and the placebo group received two placebos for 28 days. The probiotic group showed a significant decrease in stool pH (p = 0.014). Stool consistency improved in the prebiotic group (p = 0.008). The probiotic, prebiotic, and synbiotic groups showed a significant improvement in the history of excessive stool retention, the presence of fecal mass in the rectum, and the history of painful defecation. L. reuteri concentration in feces was higher in the probiotic group than in the placebo group (p = 0.001) and showed an inverse correlation with stool pH in the probiotic group (r = -0.762, p = 0.028). This study showed that the use of L. reuteri DSM 17938 and/or agave inulin improved the stool characteristics such as the history of painful defecation and the presence of fecal mass in the rectum against placebo in children with cerebral palsy and chronic constipation.

Background: Overweight and obesity in schoolchildren are a major public health problem in Mexico. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the association of appetitive traits with the presence of obesity and identify gender differences in children attending a university hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 176 children with obesity and 175 children with normal weight in the outpatient clinic of the Nuevo Hospital Civil de Guadalajara. The body mass index (BMI) of the participants was calculated. The parents completed the Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire to measure eight appetitive traits. The mean appetitive trait scores were compared between children with obesity and normal weight, and between genders. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t-tests for independent samples and regression analysis between appetite traits and BMI Z-scores. Results: The mean food responsiveness score (or food onset appetitive trait) was higher in children with obesity (p < 0.001), while the mean satiety responsiveness (or food offset trait) was higher in children with normal weight (p < 0.001). Normal weight males showed higher scores for Food responsiveness, Emotional over-eating, and Desire to drink (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Children with obesity show appetitive traits that could lead to higher food consumption. Normal weight males showed appetitive traits that could represent a risk of developing obesity.


Introducción: El sobrepeso y la obesidad en niños de edad escolar se consideran un problema de salud pública en México. El objetivo de este estudio fue demostrar la asociación entre los rasgos del apetito y la presencia de obesidad, e identificar diferencias por sexo en niños que acuden a un hospital universitario. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio de diseño transversal en 176 niños con obesidad y 175 niños con normopeso, pacientes del Nuevo Hospital Civil de Guadalajara y se calculó el índice de masa corporal (IMC) de los participantes. Se aplicó el Cuestionario de Conductas Alimentarias del Niño a los padres para evaluar ocho rasgos del apetito y se comparó el promedio de la puntuación de los rasgos del apetito entre niños con obesidad y normopeso, y entre sexos. Se utilizó la prueba t de Student para muestras independientes y análisis de regresión con los rasgos del apetito y el puntaje Z del IMC. Resultados: El promedio de la puntuación de los rasgos del apetito que muestran inclinaciones positivas hacia los alimentos (proingesta) fue mayor en niños con obesidad (p < 0.001), mientras que el promedio de los que muestran inclinaciones negativas hacia los alimentos (antiingesta) fue mayor en niños con normopeso (p < 0.001). Los participantes de sexo masculino con normopeso presentaron mayor puntaje en los rasgos del apetito Respuesta a los alimentos, Sobrealimentación emocional y Deseo de beber (p < 0.05). Conclusiones: Los niños con obesidad muestran rasgos del apetito que pueden llevar a un mayor consumo de alimentos. Los participantes de sexo masculino con normopeso mostraron rasgos del apetito que podrían representar un riesgo de desarrollo de obesidad.

El objetivo de este estudio fue demostrar la asociación entre los rasgos del apetito y la presencia de obesidad, e identificar diferencias por sexo en niños que acuden a un hospital universitario. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio de diseño transversal en 176 niños con obesidad y 175 niños con normopeso, pacientes del Nuevo Hospital Civil de Guadalajara y se calculó el índice de masa corporal (IMC) de los participantes. Se utilizó la prueba t de Student para muestras independientes y análisis de regresión con los rasgos del apetito y el puntaje Z del IMC. Resultados: El promedio de la puntuación de los rasgos del apetito que muestran inclinaciones positivas hacia los alimentos (proingesta) fue mayor en niños con obesidad (p < 0.001), mientras que el promedio de los que muestran inclinaciones negativas hacia los alimentos (antiingesta) fue mayor en niños con normopeso (p < 0.001). Los participantes de sexo masculino con normopeso presentaron mayor puntaje en los rasgos del apetito Respuesta a los alimentos, Sobrealimentación emocional y Deseo de beber (p < 0.05). Conclusiones: Los niños con obesidad muestran rasgos del apetito que pueden llevar a un mayor consumo de alimentos. Los participantes de sexo masculino con normopeso mostraron rasgos del apetito que podrían representar un riesgo de desarrollo de obesidad.


Abstract Background: Overweight and obesity in schoolchildren are a major public health problem in Mexico. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the association of appetitive traits with the presence of obesity and identify gender differences in children attending a university hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 176 children with obesity and 175 children with normal weight in the outpatient clinic of the Nuevo Hospital Civil de Guadalajara. The body mass index (BMI) of the participants was calculated. The parents completed the Children’s Eating Behaviour Questionnaire to measure eight appetitive traits. The mean appetitive trait scores were compared between children with obesity and normal weight, and between genders. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-tests for independent samples and regression analysis between appetite traits and BMI Z-scores. Results: The mean food responsiveness score (or food onset appetitive trait) was higher in children with obesity (p < 0.001), while the mean satiety responsiveness (or food offset trait) was higher in children with normal weight (p < 0.001). Normal weight males showed higher scores for Food responsiveness, Emotional over-eating, and Desire to drink (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Children with obesity show appetitive traits that could lead to higher food consumption. Normal weight males showed appetitive traits that could represent a risk of developing obesity.

Resumen La deficiencia de hierro (DFe) es la patología nutrimental infantil de mayor prevalencia en el mundo y afecta la maduración cerebral y el consiguiente desarrollo cognitivo, lingüístico, motor y comportamental de quienes la padecen. El informe que se presenta tuvo como objetivo estudiar, en profundidad, literatura acerca del efecto de la DFe sobre el desarrollo neuropsicológico en lactantes. Para ello, se analizaron 51 estudios originales realizados en humanos, 49 de los cuales fueron obtenidos a través de Pubmed y 2, de Scielo. Cabe resaltar que, con el fin de discutir los hallazgos de estos artículos, se incluyeron investigaciones sobre el efecto de la DFe que utilizan modelo animal, así como estudios en humanos con desarrollo típico. Esta búsqueda se realizó a conveniencia. El reconocimiento de sus implicaciones facilitaría el trabajo terapéutico, así como la inclusión de programas de estimulación temprana junto con el manejo de la deficiencia nutrimental.


Abstract Iron is involved in various aspects related to brain function, including oxygen transport, neurotransmitters metabolism, DNA synthesis, ATP production, dendritic growth, axonal development and transport, myelin production, glial development, in plasticity markers such as the brain-derived growth factor, and in synaptic plasticity. Human development (biological, cognitive, social) is associated with a bidirectional and dynamic interaction between gene activity, neural activity and environment. An environmental variable is nutrition, and it is known that the central nervous system is extremely vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy and in the first two years of life, period in which an accelerated maturational dynamism occurs. Therefore, a disturbance of these by an iron deficiency would result in neuropsychological alterations, with varied expressions depending on the age at which it occurs and the severity and duration of the nutritional disease. Iron deficiency is defined as the depletion of iron reserves in the body by various factors (nutritional, physiological, pathological, etc.). Three stages of the illness have been established: iron depletion, iron deficiency without anemia and iron deficiency anemia. The first is associated with a decrease in iron reserves without reaching the deficiency; it may be due to a reduction in iron intake and or absorption, excessive loss or an increase in iron requirements. At this stage, there are no functional consequences in the organism. The second stage, is characterized by biochemical changes that reflect a pathologically reduced concentration of serum ferritin with a normal hemoglobin concentration. Finally, iron deficiency anemia is defined by the combination of low concentration of serum ferritin and hemoglobin. Given that iron deficiency is the most prevalent childhood nutritional disorder in the world (affecting 43 % of children aged 6-59 months) and that it impacts brain maturation and the consequent cognitive, linguistic, motor and behavioral development of those who suffer from it, in this paper, the literature on the effect of iron deficiency on neuropsychological development in infants is analyzed in depth. The review was performed considering the short, medium and long lasting effects of iron deficiency without anemia, iron deficiency anemia, chronic iron deficiency during the first two years of life and the presence of treatment. To contextualize, the analysis of the relationship between iron and brain functioning is included and the variables that modulate the expression of its effect are addressed. To carry out the search of literature regarding the effect of iron deficiency on neuropsychological development in infants, Pubmed and SciELO were consulted. No date or language restriction was established. Different combinations of terms were used: "iron deficiency infant", "iron deficiency fetal", "iron deficiency neonatal", "iron deficiency long lasting". The analyzed reports fulfilled the following inclusion criteria: a) primary sources, b) establish a value of hemoglobin and at least one of iron (i.e, serum ferritin, mean corpuscular volume, free erythrocyte, protoporphyrin, transferrin saturation) to define the children of each group, c) human sample, d) description of the measures used for the evaluation, e) studies examined after this stage, had to determine that the sample evaluated presented iron deficiency during the first two years of life. In this paper, 51 original articles conducted in humans were analyzed, of which 49 were obtained through Pubmed and 2 from SciELO. It should be noted that, in order to discuss the findings of these reports, literature was included on the effect of iron deficiency using animal models, as well as studies in humans with typical development. The search for these was done at convenience. The recognition of its implications would facilitate the therapeutic work, as well as the inclusion of early stimulation programs together with the management of nutritional deficiency.

Satiety and appetite-stimulating hormones play a role in the regulation of food intake. Breastfed infants may have a different profile of serum appetite-regulating hormones than formula-fed infants. We propose to demonstrate that the serum concentration of appetite regulatory hormones differs according to the type of feeding and that there is a correlation between the serum concentrations of these hormones in mothers and in infants at 4 months of age. In a cross-sectional analysis, 167 mother-newborn dyads at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara were enrolled: 74 full breastfeeding (FBF), 56 partial breastfeeding (PBF), and 37 receiving human milk substitutes (HMS). Serum levels of ghrelin (pg/ml), leptin (ng/ml), peptide YY (pg/ml), and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) (pM) were measured. We performed one-way analysis of variance, unpaired Student t test, post hoc Tukey test, and Pearson correlation. The total sample at 16 weeks postpartum included 167 dyads. The mean age was 16 ± 1 weeks. The concentrations of GLP-1 (pM) and peptide YY (pg/ml) were higher in the FBF group (42.6 and 442.9) than in the HMS group (35.2 and 401.9), respectively, p = 0.046 and p = 0.056. And, the FBF group had higher correlation coefficients of ghrelin (r = 0.411 vs. 0.165), GLP-1 (r = 0.576 vs. 0.407), and peptide YY (r = 0.218 vs. 0.067), respectively, than the HMS group. The concentrations of GLP-1 and peptide YY were higher in the FBF group when compared with the HMS group. Mother-infant dyads fed by FBF had more significant direct correlations of appetite-regulating hormones than those who received HMS.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition transition provokes changes in the nutritional status of individuals subjected to the interaction of various environmental factors; therefore, the aim was to demonstrate that nutrition transition is associated with socioeconomic changes, eating habits and physical activity, potentially involved in stunting, overweight and obesity of schoolchildren. METHODS: Case-control study. 102 participants from the Instituto Alteño para el Desarrollo de Jalisco (cases) and 194 from the elementary school system (controls), aged 5 to 12 years, were included. Dependent variables were these indexes weight/age (Z), height/age (Z), BMI (Z). Independent variables were the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Student's t test, chi square, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated. RESULTS: Family income was low (p = 0.031) and unstable job was higher in cases: OR = 4.1, 95% CI = 2.8-6.0. The frequency of stunting was higher in cases (9.9% vs. 5.9%). The combination of overweight/obesity was higher in controls (27.3% vs. 16.8%), OR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.0-3.4. CONCLUSIONS: The nutritional status of children of Arandas, Jalisco, has been modified by an accelerate nutrition transition, provoked by socioeconomic, educational and demographic factors that might have influence on the persistence of stunting and an increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity.


INTRODUCCIÓN: la transición nutricia (TN) propicia cambios en el estado de nutrición de los individuos sometidos a la interacción de diversos factores ambientales; por tanto, el objetivo fue demostrar que la TN se asocia a cambios socioeconómicos, en los hábitos de alimentación y en la actividad física, potencialmente implicados en el desmedro, el sobrepeso y la obesidad en escolares. MÉTODOS: estudio de casos (n = 102) del Instituto Alteño para el Desarrollo de Jalisco y controles (n = 194) de escuelas públicas del municipio, de cinco a doce años de edad. Las variables dependientes fueron los índices peso/edad (Z), talla/edad (Z), IMC/E (Z). Las variables independientes fueron las características socioeconómicas y demográficas. Se utilizaron las pruebas t de Student, chi cuadrada y razón de momios (RM) con intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC 95%). RESULTADOS: el ingreso familiar mensual fue menor (p = 0.031) y el trabajo eventual fue más común en los casos, RM = 4.1, IC 95% = 2.8-6.0. La frecuencia de desmedro fue mayor en los casos (9.9% frente a 5.9%). La combinación de sobrepeso/obesidad fue mayor en los controles (27.3% frente a 16.8%), RM = 1.85, IC 95% = 1.0-3.4. CONCLUSIÓN: el estado nutricio de los niños de Arandas parece estar modificándose por una transición nutricia acelerada por cambios socioeconómicos, demográficos y educacionales que influyen en la persistencia de desmedro y en una creciente prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad.

This cross-sectional study was conducted on 15 infants and toddlers with chronic liver disease to validate arm anthropometry as an accurate measure of body composition (BC) compared to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and to predict growth from BC. The z score means of the anthropometric indicators were <-2 standard deviation, except for body fat index and subscapular skinfold, which were between -2 and +2 standard deviation. Fat mass was predicted by arm adiposity indicators and fat-free mass by arm muscle area. Bone mineral content explained 87% of variation in length. Two multiple regression models predicted length: 1 with fat mass plus fat-free mass; and the second with fat mass and bone mineral content. These observations suggest that arm anthropometry is a useful tool to estimate BC and the nutritional status in infants and toddlers with chronic liver disease. Length and head circumference can be predicted by fat mass, fat-free mass, and bone mineral content.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, Mexico was the top country for childhood obesity. The objective was to identify the association between physical activity and sedentary lifestyle with the social and demographic characteristics of families of schoolchildren in Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 192 schoolchildren were randomly selected. Body mass index (BMI), active and sedentary behaviors, and socio-demographic characteristics of families were obtained. Logistic regression models with the included variables were constructed. RESULTS: Males living in not-crowding houses [OR 6.12 (2.17-17.25), p = 0.001], whose mothers were housewives [OR 2.44 (1.00, 5.94), p = 0.05], practiced more physical activity. Active transport to school was more common in schoolchildren whose fathers had lower income [OR 3.13 (1.27, 7.7), p = 0.013] and employment as peasant or mason [OR 5.12 (1.13, 23.3), p = 0.034]. Schoolchildren of nuclear families spent more hours watching television [OR 2.69 (1.10, 6.58), p = 0.03]. The frequency of outdoor playing was higher in males whose fathers had unstable employment [OR 2.93 (1.06, 8.1), p = 0.038] and low education [OR 2.94 (0.96, 8.98), p = 0.059]. CONCLUSION: Families with lower socioeconomic strata (less educated parents, unstable employment and family overcrowding) are more associated with active activities that do not require active economic spending.


Introducción: en 2015, México ocupaba el primer lugar mundial en obesidad infantil. El objetivo fue identificar la asociación entre conductas activas y sedentarias con características sociodemográficas de la familia en escolares de Arandas, Jalisco, México. Métodos: en estudio transversal se seleccionaron aleatoriamente 192 escolares. Se obtuvieron el índice de masa corporal (IMC), las conductas activas y sedentarias, y las características sociodemográficas de las familias. Se construyeron modelos de regresión logística con las variables incluidas. Resultados: los varones en condiciones de no hacinamiento (razón de momios [RM] 6.12, intervalo de confianza al 95% [IC 95%] 2.17-17.25, p = 0.001) cuyas madres se dedicaban al hogar (RM 2.44, IC 95% 1.00-5.94, p = 0.05) refirieron que practicaban actividad física con más frecuencia. El transporte activo hacia la escuela fue más común en hijos de padres con menor ingreso económico (RM 3.13, IC 95% 1.27-7.7, p = 0.013) y con empleo de albañil o campesino (RM 5.12, IC 95% 1.13-23.3, p = 0.034). Los escolares provenientes de familias nucleares pasaron más horas frente al televisor (RM 2.69, IC 95% 1.10-6.58, p = 0.03). La frecuencia de juegos en la calle fue significativamente mayor en varones cuyos papás tuvieron un empleo inestable (RM 2.93, IC 95% 1.06-8.1, p = 0.038) y baja escolaridad (RM 2.94, IC 95 % 0.96-8.98, p = 0.059). Conclusión: las familias con estrato socioeconómico más bajo se asociaron con mayor frecuencia a actividades activas que no requieren un gasto económico.

El propósito fue demostrar diferencias en las conductas alimentarias entre preescolares que recibieron lactancia materna completa (LMC: exclusiva o predominante) y preescolares que recibieron sucedáneos de la leche humana (SLH), que acuden a jardín de niños de la zona metropolitana de Guadalajara. En estudio trasversal analítico por conveniencia, se seleccionaron a 177 preescolares de tres a cinco años de edad, sanos, nacidos a término, peso normal al nacer, con antecedentes de alimentación con LME o SLH que acudían a tres jardines de niños. Se aplicó un cuestionario validado de conductas alimentarias que consta de ocho escalas. Se obtuvieron variables socioeconómicas y demográficas de las familias e indicadores antropométricos de los participantes. Se aplicaron pruebas t de Student, U de Mann-Whitney, Chi cuadrado, razón de momios, coeficiente de correlación de Pearson y regresión logística. Hubo 2.8 veces mayor probabilidad de puntaje elevado en la escala comer menos por emociones en el grupo de SLH [RM=2.8 (1.0, 8.3), p=0.037]. Se observaron 15 correlaciones significativas entre las diferentes escalas del cuestionario en el grupo de LMC (62.5%) y nueve en el grupo de SLH (37.5%). Hubo siete correlaciones significativas entre las escalas en el grupo LMC que no fueron significativas en el grupo de SLH. En preescolares que recibieron LMC, a mayor lentitud para comer hubo menor irritabilidad hacia los alimentos (r=-0.325, p=0.01). Los preescolares con antecedentes de LMC tendrían menor probabilidad de alteraciones de conducta alimentaria y mostraron mayor número de correlaciones significativas entre las escalas que los preescolares que recibieron SLH(AU)


The purpose was to demonstrate differences in eating behaviors among preschool children who received full breastfeeding (FBF: exclusive or predominant) and preschool children who received human milk substitutes (HMS), who attend kindergarten in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, Mexico. In analytical cross-sectional study by convenience, 177 preschoolers, three to five years old, healthy, term infants with normal weight at birth and feeding history of FBF or HMS attending three kindergartens were selected. A validated questionnaire of eating behaviors consisting of eight scales was applied. Socioeconomic and demographic variables of families and anthropometric indicators of participants were obtained. Student's t test, U Mann-Whitney, chi-square, odds ratio, Pearson correlation coefficient and logistic regression tests were applied. There were 2.8 times more likely to score high on the scale eat less by emotions in HMS group [OR = 2.8 (1.0, 8.3), p = 0.037]. Fifteen significant correlations between different scales of the questionnaire in the FBF group (62.5%) and nine in the HMS group (37.5%) were observed. There were seven significant correlations among the scales in FBF group, but not significant in the HMS group. In preschoolers receiving FBF, more frequency of eating slowly was related to less irritability to food (r=-0.325, p=0.01).Preschoolers with a history of FBF would be less likely to have alterations in eating behavior and showed more significant correlations between the scales that preschoolers who received HMS(AU)
