RESUMO

We have studied magnetic and structural properties of the Heusler-type Ni-Mn-Ga glass-coated microwires prepared by Tailor-Ulitovsky technique. As-prepared sample presents magnetoresistance effect and considerable dependence of magnetization curves (particularly magnetization values) on magnetic field attributed to the magnetic and atomic disorder. Annealing strongly affects the temperature dependence of magnetization and Curie temperature of microwires. After annealing of the microwires at 973 K, the Curie temperature was enhanced to about 280 K which is beneficial for the magnetic solid state refrigeration. The observed hysteretic anomalies on the temperature dependences of resistance and magnetization in the as-prepared and annealed samples are produced by the martensitic transformation. The magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric effects have been investigated to illustrate a potential technological capability of studied microwires.

Experimental data on microstructural (crystalline volume fraction, grain size) and magnetic (coercive field) properties in amorphous and nanocrystalline Fe73.5-x(Co0.5Ni0.5)xSi13.5B9Nb3Cu1 alloy ribbons (x = 2.5, 5 and 10) are presented. Nanocrystalline structure was developed by annealing the precursor amorphous ribbons by current annealing (CA) and stress-current-annealing (SA). Microstructural analysis of the treated ribbons using X-ray Diffraction showed a high content of amorphous phase in the bulk. In addition, substantial changes in the crystalline state such as grain size of the samples annealed at different conditions were observed. The alloy composition also affects greatly the grain size,: increasing the (Co,Ni) content leads to higher values of the average grain size. The evolutions of the coercive field with the two kinds of thermal treatment were analysed, allowing us to conclude that the addition of (Co,Ni) tends to reduce the magnetic softness character of the original material, while the treated SA samples show higher coercivities higher than those treated without by CA.

RESUMO

Little is known about drug knowledge of patients, which is relevant for both the compliance and quality of pharmacotherapy. Drug knowledge was quantified in 160 patients in the outpatient clinics of the departments of Internal and Geriatric Medicine. Medication knowledge was generally poor, especially among older patients. Better knowledge was associated with the use of fewer drugs. Caregivers of dementia patients performed as well as younger patients, indicating that older people can perform well, if well-instructed.

We report on the fabrication, and structural and magnetic characterization of Cu(63)Fe(37) microwires with granular structure produced by rapid quenching, using the Tailor-Ulitovsky method, from the immiscible alloys. X-ray diffraction study demonstrated that the structure consists of small (6-45 nm) crystallites of Cu and body centred cubic α-Fe. Magnetic properties have been measured in the range of 5-300 K using a SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) magnetometer. The temperature dependences of the magnetization measured in a cooling regime when no external magnetic field is applied (zero-field cooling) and in the presence of the field (field cooling) show considerable difference below 20 K. This difference could be related to the presence of small α-Fe grains embedded in the Cu matrix. Those α-Fe grains appear to be blocked at temperatures below that at which the maximum of the magnetization is observed in the low temperature range. Significant magnetoresistance (about 7%) has been found in the samples studied. The shape of the observed dependences is typical of a giant magnetoresistance effect.

Different kinds of magnetic anisotropies have been induced during the nanocrystallization process of Co- and Ni-rich amorphous ferromagnetic (Finemet) ribbons by the application of a constant stress or an axial magnetic field during the annealing process. Magnetization measurements have evidenced the presence od macroscopic anisotropy in the treated samples. The main goal of this work has been, after a careful DSC study, the structural analysis of the treated ribbons using X-ray Diffraction and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), detecting substantial differences in the crystallization state and grain size of the samples depending on the thermal treatment that was carried out. Moreover, AFM measurements revealed in all the treated samples a strong nanocrystallisation of the surface without evidences of amorphous matrix, which contrast with XRD measurements that have shown a high content of amorphous phase in the bulk of the ribbons. Magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements have been performed with the aim to elucidate the complex magnetic behaviour that is expected for the surface of the ribbons, measuring surface hysteresis loops that showed much higher coercive field values than that obtained in the bulk material.

A thorough microstructural and magnetic analysis has been performed on as-quenched and annealed (475 and 525 degrees C, 1 hour) melt-spun Cu100-xCox (x = 10 and 15) granular alloys, presenting a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect. The annealed samples are inhomogeneous with respect to the Co-particle sizes and interparticles distances and, therefore, these particles present superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic behaviours, which determine the GMR response. The samples x = 15, treated at 525 degrees C during 1 hour, presented the best GMR ratio (approximately 5% at room temperature to be the highest value approaching roughly to the saturation under an applied magnetic field of 15 KOe), with the coexistence of Co-particles with both kinds of magnetic behaviour.
