Currently, it is known that angiotensin II (AngII) induces inflammation, and an AT1R blockade has anti-inflammatory effects. The use of an AT1 receptor antagonist promotes the inhibition of the secretion of multiple proinflammatory cytokines in macrophages, as well as a decrease in the concentration of reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of AT1 receptor gene silencing on the modulation of cytokines (e.g., IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IL-10) in THP-1 macrophages and the relation to the gene expression of NF-κB. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the gene expression of PPAR-γ in THP-1 macrophages using PMA (60 ng/mL). For the silencing, cells were incubated with the siRNA for 72 h and telmisartan (10 µM) was added to the medium for 24 h. After that, cells were incubated during 1 and 24 h, respectively, with Ang II (1 µM). The gene expression levels of AT1R, NF-κB, and cytokines (IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IL-10) were measured by RT-qPCR. RESULTS: We observed that silencing of the AT1 receptor causes a decrease in the expression of mRNA of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß and TNF-α), NF-κB, and PPAR-γ. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that AT1R gene silencing is an alternative to modulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1ß via NF-κB in macrophages and having high blood pressure decrease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) and cardiovascular (CV) disease. MS is evaluated binary, limiting the understanding of each component's severity individually. Therefore, severity scores for MS that evaluate them separately have been developed. This study aims to determine the prognosis between MS severity and the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in SLE patients. METHODS: Ten-year follow-up cohort study. Premenopausal>18-year-old women with a previous diagnosis of SLE were included. Patients with recent CV events, pregnancy, thyroid disease, and liposuction were excluded. The variables of interest were CV events; the confounding variables, and the MS severity indexes were examined. Hazard ratios and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were estimated through Cox regression. RESULTS: A total of 238 women were analyzed: 22 presented MACE, and 216 did not. MS prevalence, measured according to consensus and ATP-III criteria, was higher in MACE patients (50 and 40,95%, respectively). The MetSx-IMC severity index was higher within the MACE group. Cox analysis showed an increase in the MetSx-IMC associated with the risk of suffering MACE in a 1.107 ratio. CONCLUSIONS: The MetSx-IMC severity index, contrary to the binary approaches, is recommended to evaluate MS as a predictor of MACE in SLE patients. Offering improved and more accurate prognosis in patients at risk of developing MCE.

BACKGROUND: The use of temephos, the most common intervention for the chemical control of Aedes aegypti over the last half century, has disappointing results in control of the infection. The footprint of Aedes and the diseases it carries have spread relentlessly despite massive volumes of temephos. Recent advances in community participation show this might be more effective and sustainable for the control of the dengue vector. METHODS: Using data from the Camino Verde cluster randomized controlled trial, a compartmental mathematical model examines the dynamics of dengue infection with different levels of community participation, taking account of gender of respondent and exposure to temephos. RESULTS: Simulation of dengue endemicity showed community participation affected the basic reproductive number of infected people. The greatest short-term effect, in terms of people infected with the virus, was the combination of temephos intervention and community participation. There was no evidence of a protective effect of temephos 220 days after the onset of the spread of dengue. CONCLUSIONS: Male responses about community participation did not significantly affect modelled numbers of infected people and infectious mosquitoes. Our model suggests that, in the long term, community participation alone may have the best results. Adding temephos to community participation does not improve the effect of community participation alone.

Booster doses of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine have been recommended to improve and prolong immunity, address waning immunity over time, and contribute to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. A heterologous booster vaccine strategy may offer advantages over a homologous approach. To compare the immunogenicity of two doses of BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine with a ChAdOx1-S booster dose, immunoglobulin G (IgG) anti-spike (anti-S) and anti-nucleocapsid (anti-N) antibody titers (Ab) were compared over 1 year and post-booster vaccination. Results showed that, at 3- to 9-month assessments in vaccinated subjects, an-ti-N Ab were undetectable in participants with no history of COVID-19. In contrast, anti-S Ab measurements were lower than those with COVID-19, and a decrease was observed during the 9 months of observation. After booster vaccination, no differences were found in anti-S between participants who reported a history of COVID-19 and those who did not. Anti-S levels were higher after booster vaccination measurement vs. at 9 months in participants with COVID-19 and without COVID-19, i.e., independent of an infection history. Vaccine administration elicited a response of higher anti-S IgG levels in those infected before vaccination, although levels decreased during the first nine months. IgG anti-N titers were higher in participants with a history of declared infection and who were asymptomatic. The ChAdOx1-S booster increased anti-S Ab levels in participants regardless of whether they had been infected or not to a significantly higher value than with the first two vaccines. These findings underscore the importance of booster vaccination in eliciting a robust and sustained immune response against COVID-19, regardless of the prior infection status.

A spatial survival analysis was performed to identify some of the factors that influence the survival of patients with COVID-19 in the states of Guerrero, México, and Chihuahua. The data that we analyzed correspond to the period from 28 February 2020 to 24 November 2021. A Cox proportional hazards frailty model and a Cox proportional hazards model were fitted. For both models, the estimation of the parameters was carried out using the Bayesian approach. According to the DIC, WAIC, and LPML criteria, the spatial model was better. The analysis showed that the spatial effect influences the survival times of patients with COVID-19. The spatial survival analysis also revealed that age, gender, and the presence of comorbidities, which vary between states, and the development of pneumonia increase the risk of death from COVID-19.

(1) Background: Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) is a term that refers to a group of hereditary ataxias, which are neurological diseases characterized by degeneration of the cells that constitute the cerebellum. Studies suggest that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) supports diagnoses of ataxias, and linear measurements of the aneteroposterior diameter of the midbrain (ADM) have been investigated using MRI. These measurements correspond to studies in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) patients and in healthy subjects. Our goal was to obtain the cut-off value for ADM atrophy in SCA2 patients. (2) Methods: This study evaluated 99 participants (66 SCA2 patients and 33 healthy controls). The sample was divided into estimations (80%) and validation (20%) samples. Using the estimation sample, we fitted a logistic model using the ADM and obtained the cut-off value through the inverse of regression. (3) Results: The optimal cut-off value of ADM was found to be 18.21 mm. The area under the curve (AUC) of the atrophy risk score was 0.957 (95% CI: 0.895-0.991). Using this cut-off on the validation sample, we found a sensitivity of 100.00% (95% CI: 76.84%-100.00%) and a specificity of 85.71% (95% CI: 42.13%-99.64%). (4) Conclusions: We obtained a cut-off value that has an excellent discriminatory capacity to identify SCA2 patients.

Chikungunya is a vector-borne viral disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. It does not have any specific treatment, and there is no vaccine. Recent epidemiological data have indicated that a relapse of the infection can occur within three months of the initial infection; however, until now, mathematical models for the spread of the disease have not considered this factor. We propose a mathematical model for the transmission of the Chikungunya virus that considers relapse. We calculated the basic reproductive number $ (R_0) $ of the disease by using the next-generation operator method. We proved the existence of a forward bifurcation. We determined the existence and the global stability of the equilibrium points by using the Lyapunov function method. We fitted the model to data from an outbreak in 2015 in Acapulco, Mexico to estimate the model parameters and $ R_0 $ with the Bayesian approach via a Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method. In the local sensitivity analysis, we found that the fraction of infected individuals who become asymptomatic has a strong impact on the basic reproductive number and makes some control measures insufficient. The impact of the fraction of infected individuals who become asymptomatic should be considered in Chikungunya control strategies.

The aim of this work is to estimate the effect of Imatinib, exosomes, and Imatinib-exosomes mixture in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). For this purpose, mathematical models based on Gompertzian and logistic growth differential equations were proposed. The models contained parameters representing the effects of the three components on CML proliferation. Parameters estimation was performed under the Bayesian statistical approach. Experimental data reported in the literature were used, corresponding to four trials of a human leukemia xenograft in BALB/c female rats over a period of forty days. The models were fitted to the following growth dynamics: normal tumor growth, growth with exosomes, growth with Imatinib, and growth with exosomes-Imatinib mixture. For the proposed logistic growth model, it was determined that when using Imatinib treatment the growth rate is 0.93 (95% CrI: 84.33-99.64) slower and reduces the tumor volume to approximately 10% (95% CrI : 8.67-10.81). In the presence of exosome treatment, the growth rate is 0.83 (95% CrI: 1.52-16.59) faster and the tumor volume is expanded by 40% (95% CrI: 25.36-57.28). Finally, in the presence of Imatinib-exosomes mixture treatment, the growth rate is 0.82 (95% CrI: 76.87-88.51) slower and the tumor volume is reduced by 95% (95% CrI: 86.76-99.85). It is concluded that the presence of exosomes partially inactivates the effect of the Imatinib drug on tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model.

Introducción: el embarazo causa adaptaciones en el riñón, tanto en anatomía como en función, para mantener el entorno extracelular, hemodinámico y hormonal. Sin embargo, estos pueden no llevarse a cabo de manera completamente óptima en presencia de enfermedad renal. El objetivo era estudiar la relación entre la enfermedad renal y los resultados maternos de fetal durante el embarazo, asociado con un rechazo por paciente y/o en relación con el tratamiento especializado. Material y métodos: estudio observacional y retrospectivo en una serie de casos, revisando 134 archivos de pacientes embarazadas con cierto grado de enfermedad renal antes del embarazo. Los resultados maternos registrados fueron: enfermedad hipertensiva durante el embarazo, deterioro renal agudo, necesidad de terapia de sustitución renal y en productos: prematuridad, restricción del crecimiento intrauterino, muerte fetal y aborto espontáneo. Resultados: Resultados maternos: tasa media de filtración glomerular (GFR) de 58.23 ml/min, aumento de peso de 7 kg; La preeclampsia fue diagnosticada en 92 mujeres (55 severas). 46 pacientes mostraron lesión renal aguda, 40 se resolvieron conservativamente; 1 requirió diálisis peritoneal y 15 hemodiálisis (con una decisión retrasada un promedio de un mes por rechazo por paciente y/o pariente). La resolución del embarazo fue por cesárea en 111 pacientes; Nacieron 116 productos antes de las 37 semanas de gestación, con un peso promedio de 1910 g, 94 mostraron restricción del crecimiento intrauterino. Conclusión: la enfermedad renal influyó directamente en el mayor número de resultados adversos maternos y fetales cuando se rechazó la atención médica especializada. Existe una correlación entre el ligero estado de Davison con los estados I, II y IIIA de Kdigo en el análisis de correspondencia


Introduction: Pregnancy causes adaptations in the kidney, both in anatomy and function, to maintain the extracellular, hemodynamic and hormonal environment. However, these may not be carried out completely optimally in the presence of kidney disease. The objective was to study the relation between kidney disease and maternal-fetal outcomes during pregnancy, associated with a rejection by patient and/or relative to specialized treatment. Material and Methods: Observational, retrospective study in a series of cases, reviewing 134 files of pregnant patients with some degree of kidney disease prior to pregnancy. Maternal outcomes recorded were: hypertensive disease during pregnancy, acute renal deterioration, need for renal substitution therapy, and in products: prematurity, restriction of intrauterine growth, fetal death and miscarriage. Results: Maternal outcomes: mean glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 58.23ml/min, weight gain of 7 kg; preeclampsia was diagnosed in 92 women (55 severe). 46 patients showed acute renal lesion, 40 were conservatively resolved; 1 required peritoneal dialysis and 15 hemodialysis (with decision delayed an average of one month by rejection by patient and/or relative). Resolution of pregnancy was by cesarean in 111 patients; 116 products were born before 37 weeks of gestation, with average weight of 1910 g, 94 showed restriction of intrauterine growth. Conclusion: Kidney disease directly influenced the greater number of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes when specialized medical care was rejected. There is a correlation between slight Davison state with states I, II and IIIa of KDIGO in correspondence analysis.

BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with a decrease in muscle mass. Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia accelerate muscle loss, leading to a deterioration in strength, muscle mass, and physical capacity in older adults. This study was conducted to determine the association between sarcopenia and poor glycemic control in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in older adults with T2D in geriatric outpatient clinics. Sarcopenia was diagnosed as per the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) criteria. According to glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, participants were classified into glycemic control (HbA1c ≤ 7.5%) and poor glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7.5%) groups. RESULTS: Older adults with sarcopenia were found to have poor glycemic control compared to adults without sarcopenia (62.3% vs. 47.9%, p = 0.007). Logistic regression analysis showed an association between poor glycemic control and the presence of sarcopenia (odds ratio (OR): 1.79, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17-2.75) and low muscle mass (OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.07-2.73). CONCLUSIONS: Poor glycemic control is associated with the presence of sarcopenia and low muscle mass, which highlights the need to implement better treatment strategies in order to reduce the loss of muscle mass.

One of the priority lines of action to contain the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was vaccination programs for healthcare workers. However, with the emergence of highly contagious strains, such as the Omicron variant, it was necessary to know the serological status of health personnel to make decisions for the application of reinforcements. The aim of this work was to determine the seroprevalence against SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare workers in a Mexican hospital after six months of the administration of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (two doses, 4 weeks apart) and to investigate the association between comorbidities, response to the vaccine, and reinfections. Neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were determined using ELISA assays for 262 employees of Hospital Juárez de México with and without a history of COVID-19. A beta regression analysis was performed to study the associated comorbidities and their relationship with the levels of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Finally, an epidemiological follow-up was carried out to detect reinfections in this population. A significant difference in SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was observed in workers with a history of COVID-19 prior to vaccination compared to those without a history of the disease (MD: 0.961 and SD: 0.049; <0.001). Beta regression showed that workers with a history of COVID-19 have greater protection compared to those without a history of the infection. Neutralizing antibodies were found to be decreased in alcoholic and diabetic subjects (80.1%). Notably, eight cases of Omicron reinfections were identified, and gender and obesity were associated with the presence of reinfections (6.41 OR; 95% BCa CI: 1.15, 105.0). The response to the vaccine was influenced by the history of SARS-CoV-2 infection and associated comorbidities. The above highlights the importance of prioritizing this segment of the population for reinforcements in periods of less than one year to guarantee their effectiveness against new variants.

Empirical use of antibiotics in the treatment of eye infections leads to bacterial pathogens becoming resistant to antibiotics; consequently, treatment failure and eye health complications occur. The aim of this study was to describe the phenotype and genotype of the resistance and adherence of bacterial agents causing eye infections in patients at Hospital Juárez de México. An observational, prospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was carried out in patients with signs and symptoms of ocular infection. Bacterial agents were isolated and identified by classical microbiology and mass spectrometry. Antibiotic resistance and adherence profiles were determined. Finally, resistance (mecA/SCCmec) and virulence (icaA and icaD) genes were detected in the Gram-positive population. The results showed that blepharitis was the most prevalent condition in the study population. A MALDI-TOF analysis revealed that Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas genus were the most prevalent as causal agents of infection. Resistances to ß-lactams were detected of 44 to 100%, followed by clindamycins, aminoglycosides, folate inhibitors, and nitrofurans. A multiple correspondence analysis showed a relationship between mecA genotype and ß-lactams resistance. The identification of SCCmecIII and SCCmecIV elements suggested community and hospital sources of infection. Finally, the coexistence of icaA+/icaD+/mecA(SCCmecIII) and icaA+/icaD+/mecA(SCCmecIV) genotypes was detected in S. aureus. The identification of resistant and virulent isolates highlights the importance of developing protocols that address the timely diagnosis of ocular infections. Herein, implications for the failure of antimicrobial therapy in the treatment of ocular infections in susceptible patients are analysed and discussed.

The current contribution aimed to evaluate the capacity of the naive Bayes classifier to predict the progression of dengue fever to severe infection in children based on a defined set of clinical conditions and laboratory parameters. This case-control study was conducted by reviewing patient files in two public hospitals in an endemic area in Mexico. All 99 qualifying files showed a confirmed diagnosis of dengue. The 32 cases consisted of patients who entered the intensive care unit, while the 67 control patients did not require intensive care. The naive Bayes classifier could identify factors predictive of severe dengue, evidenced by 78% sensitivity, 91% specificity, a positive predictive value of 8.7, a negative predictive value of 0.24, and a global yield of 0.69. The factors that exhibited the greatest predictive capacity in the model were seven clinical conditions (tachycardia, respiratory failure, cold hands and feet, capillary leak leading to the escape of blood plasma, dyspnea, and alterations in consciousness) and three laboratory parameters (hypoalbuminemia, hypoproteinemia, and leukocytosis). Thus, the present model showed a predictive and adaptive capacity in a small pediatric population. It also identified attributes (i.e., hypoalbuminemia and hypoproteinemia) that may strengthen the WHO criteria for predicting progression to severe dengue.

The goal of this work is to estimate the efficacy of interferon therapy in the inhibition of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in a cell culture. For this purpose, three viral dynamics models with the antiviral effect of interferons are presented; the dynamics of cell growth differ among the models, and a variant with Gompertz-type cell dynamics is proposed. A Bayesian statistics approach is used to estimate the cell dynamics parameters, viral dynamics and interferon efficacy. The models are fitted to sets of experimental data on cell growth, HIV-1 infection without interferon therapy and HIV-1 infection with interferon therapy, respectively. The Watanabe-Akaike information criterion (WAIC) is used to determine the model that best fits the experimental data. In addition to the estimated model parameters, the average lifespan of the infected cells and the basic reproductive number are calculated.

Due to the COVID-19 emergency, face-to-face classes were suspended. After the vaccination of teachers and to mitigate educational backwardness, the schools have begun to reopen with protocols established by the government. Here, we investigated the COVID-19 outbreak in summer courses during the reopening of a private elementary school in July 2021. We report confirmed cases of COVID-19 in staff members, students, and their families. A total community of 290 people was part of this study, and we built the contact network. The clinical features of all cases are described. We used the methodology of cases and contacts. The index case was identified by epidemiological tracking, and containment measures were activated, as well as further infection chains in the setting. We estimate the attack rate for staff members at 15.68% (95% CI 7.0-28.6), students at 12.24% (95% CI 4.6-24.8), and family members at 2.6% (95% CI 0.8-6.0). An incubation period of 48-72 h was determined. A student-teacher-student-family transmission sequence was identified. The area where the infection was identified was the school swimming pool, an area where face masks are not worn or, in some cases, inadequately used. Finally, we continue with intermittent staff testing and early detection actions, reinforcing prevention measures, environmental control, cleaning, and educational interventions with students regarding the implementation of preventive measures through classes led by school health staff.

Age as a risk factor is common in vector-borne infectious diseases. This is partly because children depend on adults to take preventative measures, and adults are less susceptible to mosquito bites because they generally spend less time outdoors than children. We propose a dengue disease model that considers the human population as divided into two subpopulations: children and adults. This is in order to take into consideration that children are more likely than adults to be bitten by mosquitoes. We calculated the basic reproductive number of dengue, using the next-generation operator method. We determined the local and global stability of the disease-free equilibrium. We obtained sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the endemic equilibrium using the Lyapunov functional method. When the infected periods in children and adults are the same, we that the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable in the interior of the feasible region when the threshold quantity $ R_0 > 1 $. Additionally, we performed a numerical simulation using parameter values obtained from the literature. Finally, a local sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the parameters that have the greatest influence on changes in $ (R_0) $, and thereby obtain a better biological interpretation of the results.

BACKGROUND: Chronic or low-grade inflammation is a process where various immune cells are recruited from the periphery into adipose tissue. This event gives rise to localised inflammation, in addition to having a close interaction with cardiometabolic pathologies where the mediation of orphan receptors is observed. The aim of this study was to analyse the participation of the orphan receptors GPR21, GPR39, GPR82 and GPR6 in a chronic inflammatory process in 3T3-L1 cells. The 3T3-L1 cells were stimulated with TNF-α (5 ng/mL) for 60 min as an inflammatory model. Gene expression was measured by RT-qPCR. RESULTS: We showed that the inflammatory stimulus of TNF-α in adipocytes decreased the expression of the orphan receptors GPR21, GPR26, GPR39, GPR82 and GPR6, which are related to low-grade inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that GPR21 and GPR82 are modulated by glycine, it shows a possible protective role in the presence of an inflammatory environment in adipocytes, and they could be a therapeutic target to decrease the inflammation in some diseases related to low-grade inflammation such as diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Background: The use of convalescent plasma (CP) has been considered for its immunological mechanisms that could benefit patients in moderate and severe stages of COVID-19. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of the use of donor CP for COVID-19. Material and methods: A double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted from May to October 2020. Thirty-nine participants with moderate (II) and severe (III) stages of COVID-19 confirmed by RT-PCR were included. The study randomization rate was set at 3:1. CPs were chosen for application with a neutralizing antibody titer of ≥1:32. Results: We observed a significantly lower 21-day post-transfusion mortality HR: 0.17 (95.0% CI [0.07−0.45, p < 0.001]) in the group receiving CP compared with the control group; protective units (PU) in the group receiving convalescent plasma after seven days were significantly higher (512 (32−16,384) vs. 96 (32−256), p = 0.01); the PAO2/FIO2 index showed a significant improvement in the group receiving CP (251.01 (109.4) vs. 109.2 (62.4), p < 0.001, in the control group). Conclusion: CP is safe and effective, as it decreased mortality in the CP group compared with the control group.

The aim of this paper is to model the dynamics of the human papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical epithelial cells. We developed a mathematical model of the epithelial cellular dynamics of the stratified epithelium of three (basale, intermedium, and corneum) stratums that is based on three ordinary differential equations. We determine the biological condition for the existence of the epithelial cell homeostasis equilibrium, and we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for its global stability using the method of Lyapunov functions and a theorem on limiting systems. We have also developed a mathematical model based on seven ordinary differential equations that describes the dynamics of HPV infection. We calculated the basic reproductive number (R 0) of the infection using the next-generation operator method. We determine the existence and the local stability of the equilibrium point of the cellular homeostasis of the epithelium. We then give a sufficient condition for the global asymptotic stability of the epithelial cell homeostasis equilibrium using the Lyapunov function method. We proved that this equilibrium point is nonhyperbolic when R 0 = 1 and that in this case, the system presents a forward bifurcation, which shows the existence of an infected equilibrium point when R 0 > 1. We also study the solutions numerically (i.e., viral kinetic in silico) when R 0 > 1. Finally, local sensitivity index was calculated to assess the influence of different parameters on basic reproductive number. Our model reproduces the transient, acute, latent, and chronic infections that have been reported in studies of the natural history of HPV.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the mechanical complications of weekly care and maintenance versus once every 10 days of the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line insertion site versus once every 10 days in newborns. DESIGN AND METHODS: Prospective propensity score matched cohort study. Care and maintenance of the PICC line insertion site were performed on days 7 and 10 during January 2018 to December 2019. To compare mechanical complications, propensity score matching was performed. Propensity scores were used to determine the relative risks and hazard ratios by using logistic regressions with log-link function and Cox regressions, respectively. RESULTS: We included 175 newborns hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) who underwent insertion of a PICC line. Ninety-six received weekly care and maintenance, and 79 received care and maintenance every 10 days. Weekly care and maintenance were associated with more breakage (RR 1.98, 95% CI 1.68-2.34); occlusions (RR 0.81, 95% CI 0.46-1.42) and accidental withdrawals (RR 1.31, 95% CI 0.93-1.84) were not different between care and maintenance every 7 and 10 days. A survival analysis was performed, showing that weekly care and maintenance are a risk factor for removal for mechanical complications (HR 7.61, 95% CI 3.05-19.01). CONCLUSION: We concluded that care and maintenance of the PICC in newborns every 10 days have fewer complications than when performing care and maintenance every 7 days. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Newborns requiring intravenous therapy will benefit from care and maintenance every 10 days, and this practice could potentially spread to other NICUs.
