RESUMO

Postpancreatectomy hemorrhage (PPH) is a severe complication of pancreatic surgery. This condition often develops on the background of pancreatic fistula. In our report, we demonstrate an unusual case of spontaneous cessation of severe postpancreatectomy common hepatic artery (СHA) hemorrhage after distal pancreatectomy in a patient with celiac artery stenosis (CAS). A 64-year-old male diagnosed with pancreatic tail tumor underwent extended distal pancreatectomy. He developed pancreatic fistula and was discharged with an abdominal drain, and was readmitted with severe postpancreatectomy hemorrhage from a pseudoaneurysm of the CHA. The bleeding stopped spontaneously due to CHA thrombosis. The patient developed no ischemic symptoms. Spontaneous severe postpancreatectomy hemorrhage cessation is an extremely rare phenomenon. Vascular anomalies must be considered when attempting interventional radiology treatment. CHA probably may be sacrificed with no ischemic consequences in case of severe hemorrhage in patients with CAS.

RESUMO

A non-standard surgicall approach in malignant retroperitoneal tumor treatment was used, which includes simultaneous resection and reconstruction of the infrarenal segment of aorta and inferior vena cava. The total vascular recunstrustion time was 40 minutes and 15 minutes out of total time was arterial ischemia. The postoperative period was complicated by the right urethral fistula and the limited fluid concentration in the surgical area. On day 25th of the post-operative period patient discharged from the hospital. We believe that such a tactic can be safe and effective in case of meticulous patients selection and the multidisciplinary and multi-team approaches application.

RESUMO

A technique is presented of restoring the electronic density of states of the valence band from data of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The originality of the technique consists in using a stochastic procedure to solve an integral equation relating the density of states and the experimental X-ray photoelectron spectra via the broadening function. To obtain the broadening function, only the XPS spectra of the core levels are needed. The results are presented for bulk sample of gold and tungsten and nanoclusters of tantalum; the possibility of using the results to determine the density of states of low-dimensional structures, including ensembles of metal nanoclusters, is demonstrated.

We consider an experiment on trapping and laser cooling of 229Th3+ ions in a linear Paul trap in the presence of undesirable impurities such as ions of the radioactive isotope 228Th3+. We suggest a method of separating these impurities by means of selective laser cooling utilizing the isotope shift of cooling transitions in 229Th3+ and 228Th3+ ions. According to our estimation, the isotope shift is equal to 3.4 GHZ and makes laser separation of these isotopes possible.

We describe an original multisectional quadrupole ion trap aimed to realize nuclear frequency standard based on the unique isomer transition in thorium nucleus. It is shown that the system effectively operates on Th+, Th2+ and Th3+ ions produced by laser ablation of metallic thorium-232 target. Laser intensity used for ablation is about 6 GW/cm2. Via applying a bias potential to every control voltage including the RF one, we are able not only to manipulate ions within the energy range as wide as 1-500 eV but to specially adjust trap potentials in order to work mainly with ions that belong to energy distribution maximum and therefore to effectively enhance the number of trapped ions. Measurement of energy distributions of 232Th+, 232Th2+, 232Th3+ ions obtained by laser ablation allows us to define optimal potential values for trapping process. Observed number of ions inside trap in dependence on trapping time is found to obey an unusually slow - logarithmic decay law that needs more careful study.

There is a growing need for the development of atomic and nuclear frequency standards because of the important contribution of methods for precision time and frequency measurements to the development of fundamental science, technology, and the economy. It is also conditioned by their potential use in optical clocks and quantum logic applications. It is especially important to develop a universal method that could allow one to use ions of most elements effectively (including ones that are not easily evaporated) proposed for the above-mentioned applications. A linear quadrupole ion trap for the optical spectroscopy of electron and nuclear transitions has been developed and evaluated experimentally. An ion source construction is based on an ultra-high vacuum evaporator in which a metal sample is subjected to an electron beam of energy up to 1 keV, resulting in the appearance of gaseous atoms and ions of various charge state. The linear ion trap consists of five successive quadrupole sections including an entrance quadrupole section, quadrupole mass filter, quadrupole ion guide, ion-trap section, and exit quadrupole section. The same radiofrequency but a different direct current voltage feeds the quadrupole sections. The instrument allows the mass and energy selected trapping of ions from ion beams of various intensities and their localization in the area of laser irradiation. The preliminary results presented show that the proposed instrument and methods allow one to produce effectively up to triply charged thorium ions as well as to trap ions for future spectroscopic study. The instrument is proposed for future use in optical clocks and quantum logic application development.

PURPOSE: To identify transcripts expressed late in lens fiber cell maturation that might regulate fiber cell fusion, organelle degradation, or other events associated with the maturation of lens fiber cells. METHODS: cDNA libraries were prepared from microdissected regions of chicken embryo lenses using a PCR-based method. Subtractive hybridization was used to identify transcripts expressed exclusively in fiber cells that had detached from the lens capsule. Database searches and PCR amplification with degenerate primers were used to identify human, mouse, rat, rabbit, and bovine orthologs of one such sequence and to confirm its expression in the lenses of these animals. The ability of in vitro-transcribed and translated protein to bind DNA was assessed by mobility shift assays. The locus encoding this transcript and an area about 6 kb upstream of the translation start site were sequenced. The microscopic morphology of lenses from mice in which the locus encoding this protein had been disrupted by the insertion of a nuclear-targeted bacterial lacZ sequence were analyzed. Gene expression was analyzed by PCR, in situ hybridization, and by staining for beta-galactosidase activity in lenses expressing lacZ in place of the coding sequence. Knockout lenses expressing green fluorescent protein in a mosaic pattern were sectioned in the equatorial plane and viewed with a confocal microscope to assess the presence of cell-cell fusions during fiber cell maturation. RESULTS: Subtractive hybridization identified transcripts encoding Hop, a short, atypical homeodomain-containing protein that had previously been shown to be an important regulator of gene expression in the heart and lung. Chicken Hop did not bind to known homeodomain-binding sequences in DNA. In chicken embryos, Hop transcripts were first detected at E6. At all stages analyzed, Hop mRNA was only detected in cells that had detached from the lens capsule. Mice in which the Hop coding sequence was replaced with nuclear-targeted beta-galactosidase showed that Hop was expressed in the mouse lens in a similar pattern to the chicken lens. Characterization of lenses from mice lacking Hop revealed no morphological phenotype and no apparent defects in the degradation of nuclei or fiber cell fusion during fiber cell maturation. CONCLUSIONS: The expression pattern of Hop provides the first evidence that new transcription is initiated in lens fiber cells after they detach from the capsule. Hop may be the first of a class of genes with this pattern of expression. Although lens abnormalities have yet to be identified in mice lacking Hop, the genomic sequences that regulate Hop expression in the lens may be useful for expressing exogenous transcripts selectively in fiber cells just before they fuse with their neighbors and degrade their organelles.
