RESUMO

An integrated biorefinery, incorporating hydrothermal processing of waste pomegranate peels (WPP), was proposed for the acid and organic solvent-free simultaneous recovery of pectin and phenolics with bioethanol production. The hydrothermal treatment (HT) was optimized using Box-Behnken design and the maximum recovery of pectin (18.8-20.9%) and phenolics (10.6-11.8%) were obtained by hydrothermal treatment at 115 °C for 40 min with a liquid-solid ratio of 10. The WPP pectin was characterized by IR, 1H NMR, and TGA which showed close similarity to commercial pectin. Depending on WPP cultivar type the degree of esterification, galacturonic acid content and molecular weight of pectin were in the range of 68-74%, 71-72%, and 131,137-141,538 Da, respectively. The recovered phenolics contained 57-60% punicalagin. Enzyme digestibility of WPP improved using HT with 177 g glucose produced per kg dry mass which was fermented to obtain 80 g ethanol with 88% of theoretical yield.

RESUMO

A series of multifunctional protic ionic liquids (PILs), some of which are based on a combination of primary and tertiary amines in the same moiety coupled with a carboxylic acid, have been synthesised and employed for CO2 capture, yielding absorption capacities comparable to standard absorbents. In contrast to traditional amine absorbers, CO2 was found to desorb at lower temperatures and hence could result in a significant reduction in both the energy required to strip the absorber of CO2 and the thermally activated degradation mechanisms, which in traditional absorbers result in the loss of absorber and the production of toxic compounds. The lower basicity of the amine sites resultant from PIL formation decreases the binding energy of the CO2 to the absorber. The weaker basicity is also evidenced by lower pH of the PIL CO2 absorbers, which reduces common corrosion problems associated with traditional amine absorbers.

RESUMO

Dual left anterior descending artery (LAD) is a rare variation in the coronary artery anatomy having 4 different subtypes. We report a rare scenario of type IV dual LAD, with short LAD critical stenosis, compensated by a long LAD perfusing the same territory, which was missed on initial angiographic evaluation. Myocardial perfusion scan (MPS) of this patient showed preserved perfusion. A review of angiogram revealed this anomaly, indicating that a meticulous correlation of anatomic and functional modalities is necessary as it could change further management of patient.

RESUMO

Short term repeated exposure of 1-chloroacetophenone (CN) vapours at a concentration of 0.153 mg per litre for 15 minutes daily on 10 consecutive days in Swiss albino male mice resulted in increased mortality to Listeria monocytogenes. Significantly elevated bacterial growth was observed in the spleen and liver of the CN exposed animals. The increased bacterial count in these organs was evident within 4-6 days post challenge as compared to vehicle exposed infected and unexposed infected animals. Increased susceptibility to infection has been considered to be the function of immune alteration due to cumulative short term effects of CN vapour inhalation. This may be attributed to immunotoxic effects of CN on T-cells mediated macrophage functions.
