RESUMO

We investigated the accuracy of CEUS for characterizing cystic and solid kidney lesions in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Cystic lesions are assessed using Bosniak criteria for computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); however, in patients with moderate to severe kidney disease, CT and MRI contrast agents may be contraindicated. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a safe alternative for characterizing these lesions, but data on its performance among CKD patients are limited. We performed flash replenishment CEUS in 60 CKD patients (73 lesions). Final analysis included 53 patients (63 lesions). Four readers, blinded to true diagnosis, interpreted each lesion. Reader evaluations were compared to true lesion classifications. Performance metrics were calculated to assess malignant and benign diagnoses. Reader agreement was evaluated using Bowker's symmetry test. Combined reader sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) for diagnosing malignant lesions were 71%, 75%, 45%, and 90%, respectively. Sensitivity (81%) and specificity (83%) were highest in CKD IV/V patients when grouped by CKD stage. Combined reader sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV for diagnosing benign lesions were 70%, 86%, 91%, and 61%, respectively. Again, in CKD IV/V patients, sensitivity (81%), specificity (95%), and PPV (98%) were highest. Inter-reader diagnostic agreement varied from 72% to 90%. In CKD patients, CEUS is a potential low-risk option for screening kidney lesions. CEUS may be particularly beneficial for CKD IV/V patients, where kidney preservation techniques are highly relevant.

RESUMO

Male breast cancer is a rare but serious condition that impacts an increasing number of men each year. Due to low incidence rate, there is a current lack of established diagnostic and management practices. Here, we provide a review of the current epidemiology, classification, diagnosis, and treatment of male breast cancer. We present a rare case of mucinous breast cancer in a 74-year-old male patient detected after he presented with a retroareolar mass. The patient underwent mammography, targeted ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy, which established the diagnosis. He was treated surgically with left mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy with axillary lymph node dissection, followed by post-adjuvant tamoxifen and has remained free of recurrence and metastasis since.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This article describes, illustrates, and correlates imaging and pathologic features of primary vascular mesenchymal neoplasms of the liver, which arise from the vascular endothelium and perivascular epithelioid cells. CONCLUSION: Familiarity with the spectrum of benign, malignant-potential and malignant vascular neoplasms, and nonneoplastic mimickers allows consideration in the differential diagnosis of enhancing hepatic masses. Understanding relevant pathologic features facilitates recognition of key imaging features, specifically dynamic contrast enhancement patterns on CT and MRI, which provide a useful classification system.

RESUMO

Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we show that hexadecafluorinated zinc phthalocyanine (F16ZnPc) molecules form two morphologically different self-assembled structures that both display point-on-line coincident epitaxial registration with the deactivated Si(111)-B 3×3 surface. The packing motif in these structures suggests that fluorination of conjugated organic molecules can lead to stronger molecule-substrate interaction, π-π intermolecular interaction, and side-to-side intermolecular repulsion. The delicate balance and interplay between these interactions determine the self-assembly behavior of fluorinated molecules. Furthermore, we demonstrate the formation of vertically and laterally stacked F16ZnPc-ZnPc heterojunctions, allowing for future spectroscopy investigation of molecular electronic structures and charge transfer behavior at organic-organic hetero-interfaces.

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory, we show that the molecular ordering and orientation of metal phthalocyanine molecules on the deactivated Si surface display a strong dependency on the central transition-metal ion, driven by the degree of orbital hybridization at the heterointerface via selective p-d orbital coupling. This Letter identifies a selective mechanism for modifying the molecule-substrate interaction which impacts the growth behavior of transition-metal-incorporated organic molecules on a technologically relevant substrate for silicon-based devices.

RESUMO

Freestanding silicene, a monolayer of Si arranged in a honeycomb structure, has been predicted to give rise to massless Dirac fermions, akin to graphene. However, Si structures grown on a supporting substrate can show properties that strongly deviate from the freestanding case. Here, combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and differential conductance mapping, we show that the electrical properties of the (√3 x √3) phase of few-layer Si grown on Ag(111) strongly depend on film thickness, where the electron phase coherence length decreases and the free-electron-like surface state gradually diminishes when approaching the interface. These features are presumably attributable to the inelastic inter-band electron-electron scattering originating from the overlap between the surface state, interface state and the bulk state of the substrate. We further demonstrate that the intrinsic electronic structure of the as grown (√3 x √3) phase is identical to that of the (√3 x √3)R30° reconstructed Ag on Si(111), both of which exhibit the parabolic energy-momentum dispersion relation with comparable electron effective masses. These findings highlight the essential role of interfacial coupling on the properties of two-dimensional Si structures grown on supporting substrates, which should be thoroughly scrutinized in pursuit of silicene.

We report the first demonstration of anisotropic step-flow growth of organic molecules on a semiconducting substrate using metal phthalocyanine thermally deposited on the deactivated Si(111)-B sqrt[3]×sqrt[3] R30° surface. With scanning probe microscopy and geometric modeling, we prove the quasiepitaxial nature of this step-flow growth that exhibits no true commensurism, despite a single dominant long-range ordered relationship between the organic crystalline film and the substrate, uniquely distinct from inorganic epitaxial growth. This growth mode can likely be generalized for a range of organic molecules on deactivated Si surfaces and access to it offers new potential for the integration of ordered organic thin films in silicon-based electronics.

RESUMO

Second-harmonic generation using the type-II polarization configuration is demonstrated in quasi-phase-matched GaAs radicalAlGaAs superlattice waveguides. Phase-matching wavelengths and conversion efficiencies were determined for several quasi-phase-matching periods using 1.9 ps pulses. Saturation effects at high input power were concluded to be the result of third-order nonlinear effects.
